Interview: Welcome to London’s newest venue

Personally, I think you can never have too many theatres, but perhaps I’m biased.

You may think that the midst of a pandemic might not be an ideal time to open a brand new theatre, but that is exactly what is about to happen in Camberwell’s SE5. So we thought we’d have a chat with Georgia Leanne Harris, Golden Goose’s Artistic Director, to find out about the theatre, what we can expect from them, and of course, what Covid-19 has done to their plans.
What was the initial inspiration for a brand-new London venue?
Personally, I think you can never have too many theatres, but perhaps I’m biased. In reality we stumbled across a space that had such great potential, and that wasn’t really being used, and thought, ‘this could be something special’. The inspiration for the venue actually started with the venue itself; it was an opportunity we didn’t want to miss, and all of our plans have grown from there!
What does Golden Goose offer that may not be available in many other venues?
I suppose the obvious thing is that we’ve got quite a lot of space! With a lot of fringe theatres having small, black box rooms, we’re hoping to offer another option. We’ve got space and height to allow for those slightly larger casts or a band that some venues just don’t have the room for, and (when we’re allowed to be at full strength), we have the capacity to allow in some good crowds to share the work.
How has your thinking had to change due to the current situation?
It’s absolutely changed how we launched this theatre. We’ve had to adapt like everyone else and look at how we can sustain and support artists and work with the new ‘normal’. We can’t currently host enormous shows, so instead we’ve sought out shows with smaller casts that we can offer space to. This means we’re still supporting artists and actually launching a theatre.
We’re so incredibly proud of all the artists in our opening season. They are shows that are touring safely, that have come from cancelled events, that are revivals with important things to say. Our building and our community are going to build slowly and safely, but we’re thrilled to be able to adapt so that we can still exist as a new building at all!
What can we expect to see at Golden Goose?

I don’t think you can expect a certain type of show from us. We want to become the kind of venue where we ask artists what they want to say and work out how we can facilitate it. At the moment, we’re looking at runs ranging from a couple of nights, research and developments, rehearsed readings, all the way up to runs of 3-4 weeks for fully funded shows who feel they can sustain them.
We do want to produce in-house shows once or twice a year as well, and this is something we’re looking to do in the spring. But for now, we have an amazing revival of Mark Lockyer’s Living With The Lights On which is full of chaos and hope. We have a UK premier of the musical Now. Here. This‘, and a poignant comedy Howerd’s End which looks at the life of Frankie Howerd and how he was forced to keep his love life a secret.
We also can’t wait to welcome Eating Myself by Pepa Duarte, which explores nurturing ourselves, women’s relationships with food and what it means to be Peruvian. And we have lots more coming this year that we aren’t even telling you about yet!

How are you going to become a vital part of the local community?
We really want to engage with the local area and provide a space that feels welcoming. Whilst it just isn’t safe or practical right now to have an ‘open doors’ policy, we would love to find a way of creating a place for people to sit and work in our bar during the day, and welcoming local artists into our space.
We’re also planning further down the line working with teens in the area; offering drama classes and workshops about careers in the creative arts, as well as workshops for locals of all ages from practitioners in various fields. While our community engagement is likely to really kick off in the new year (when we can hopefully start to gather a little more safely) we will still be reaching out this year and making contact to say, ‘we are here, what can we do?’.
All set for opening night then?
Of course, we’d love to have a big launch night but that just isn’t feasible right now! Perhaps we’ll throw a delayed welcome night when we host our first in-house production, just so we have some excuse for a party! To me, just welcoming audiences into a building for the first time, especially after so much time apart, and having that first shared experience is a party in itself!
Thanks to Georgia for taking the time to talk to us about Golden Goose. The venue opens the doors to its first show on 13 October. We hope to see you all there. More

  • Carole Baskin Not Really Excited About Nicolas Cage's 'Tiger King' TV Series

    Facebook/WENN

The Big Cat Rescue chief likely won’t watch the upcoming TV series which is going to feature the ‘Ghost Rider’ actor as her infamous adversary Joe Exotic.
    Sep 13, 2020
AceShowbiz – Carole Baskin probably won’t be tuning into Amazon’s forthcoming “Tiger King” TV series – despite her “favourite actor” Nicolas Cage landing the starring role.
In the Amazon series, Cage will portray an eccentric zookeeper in Oklahoma fighting to save his park. The project is based on the Texas Monthly article “Joe Exotic: A Dark Journey Into the World of a Man Gone Wild”, written by Leif Reigstad, who will executive produce.
Despite being a massive fan of Cage, Baskin – who saw Exotic jailed for 22 years for his role in a murder-for-hire plot against her – admits she likely won’t watch the show.
“He is such a favorite actor of mine, and I just don’t know if I can even watch him after seeing that role,” she tells U.S. TV show “Extra”.
Of her hopes for the show, she shares, “For me, it’s not what people think about me from ‘Tiger King,’ even though I was grossly misportrayed as a villain, but what I am hoping people get from this is the message of what was missed in ‘Tiger King,’ that the animals are being exploited and abused – and we need to stop that.”
This week (begs07Sep20), Exotic submitted a 257-page case to U.S. leader Donald Trump, alleging he’s been mistreated and sexually assaulted behind bars, in a bid to be pardoned from his sentence – but Baskin, who appears on the new season of “Dancing With the Stars”, is doubtful of his chances.
“I just can’t imagine that would be good for anybody’s political campaign,” she adds.

  • Robbie Amell Forced to 'Get Back Into Shape' Ahead of Shirtless Role in 'Babysitter' Sequel

    WENN

The Firestorm of CW’s ‘The Flash’ admits he was concerned about being out of shape as he had to appear shirtless the entire time in ‘The babysitter: Killer Queen’.
    Sep 13, 2020
AceShowbiz – Actor Robbie Amell had to hit the gym before filming his new movie “The Babysitter: Killer Queen” – in which he’s shirtless the entire time.
The sequel, which is now streaming on Netflix, features Robbie reprising his role as Max from the 2017 original. And according to the 32 year old, he knew before he even read the script he’d have to start working out.
“I kind of figured that… I didn’t think I was gaining a shirt from one to two,” Robbie told TooFab.
The new dad admitted he did “have to worry about being a father and getting back into shape… The second I found out we were doing a sequel I was like, ‘Alright, I better start working out a little bit.’ ”
According to Robbie, there was one scene where director McG planned on putting the star in a shirt, but then suggested he go shirtless for the sake of continuity.
“I was like, ‘Nope… McG, it’s way funnier, I think we earned it, no shirt,’ ” he said. “He thought it was hilarious, we put the name tag directly to my skin. That’s just kind of what this movie is. It’s self aware and we always want to have a good time.”
The first 2017 teen comedy horror film also starred Samara Weaving, Judah Lewis, Hana Mae Lee, and Bella Thorne – all of whom return for the new instalment.

  • Andrew Lloyd Webber Promises to Bring Back 'Phantom of the Opera' Following Covid-19 Shutdown

    WENN

The famed theater composer vows to revive his ‘Phantom of the Opera’ musical on the West End after the play was forced to close due to the coronavirus crisis.
    Sep 13, 2020
AceShowbiz – Sir Andrew Lloyd Webber has promised fans his “Phantom of the Opera” musical will sing again on London’s West End after it was forced to shutter by the coronavirus pandemic.
Most theatres across the U.K. have remained closed since the start of the global health crisis, and in July (20), producer Cameron Mackintosh suggested the curtain had come down on Phantom of the Opera for the final time, ending a record 34-year run.
However, the theatre mogul is determined to bring the production back to the West End stage at its longtime home of Her Majesty’s Theatre, which he has owned since 2000.
On Friday (11Sep20), Lloyd Webber took fans on a virtual tour of the empty theatre to show them the space, which had its stage sets torn down and its seats removed, although he explained it was all done as part of renovation plans, which would allow him to give the “Phantom of the Opera” scenery a complete revamp, while remaining true to the vision of the musical’s original director, the late Hal Prince.
“Well, this is the stage of Her Majesty’s Theatre, where Phantom should be playing,” he said in the video, posted to his Twitter page.
“It will be playing again, if I’ve got anything to do with it, as soon as possible. But everything had to be taken away and ripped out, primarily, actually, because it was time to rethink some of the scenery, in a good way.”
“I mean, a lot of it had got (sic) quite old, but I promise you, it’ll be the Hal Prince production that comes back in its entirety, hopefully even bigger and better, because, as you all know, I’m a great fan of Hal Prince, and he was, in my view, one of the greatest directors that Broadway or theatre ever had, and I certainly want to honour his memory as much as possible…”
Lloyd Webber, who has been calling on British government officials to do more to save the crumbling arts industry in the wake of COVID-19, admits seeing his venue completely empty day after day is heartbreaking.
“All we wanna do is to be allowed to open again, that’s all we want,” he shared.
“Sometimes it makes me almost cry to think that this is a theatre and a theatre is about live experience and it’s about people coming and actors giving an audience an experience that that particular audience is the only time that that experience will happen, because every performance is different.”

Concluding his digital tour, the composer vowed, “One thing I do promise everybody, so long as I have anything to do with theatre, Phantom will be back and it will be back with the Hal Prince production, with the Gillian Lynne choreography, Maria Bjornson’s fabulous scenery, and hopefully some of my music. Who knows?”
