  • Steve McQueen Delighted 'Mangrove' Selected to Open 2020 BFI London Film Festival

    M Glow Pictures

This Letitia Wright-starring movie tells the true story of the Mangrove Nine, a group of black activists who clashed with London police officers during a protest march in 1970.
    Aug 25, 2020
AceShowbiz – Steve McQueen’s latest movie “Mangrove” is to open this year’s BFI London Film Festival.
The movie, which stars Letitia Wright, Shaun Parkes and Malachi Kirby, tells the true story of the Mangrove Nine, a group of black activists who clashed with London police officers during a protest march in 1970. The subsequent trial was the first time racial hatred within the police was officially acknowledged in court in the U.K.
McQueen and bosses at the British Film Institute (BFI) announced the movie will receive its European premiere as the event’s opening film on October 7.

The director says in a statement: “I couldn’t be happier that Mangrove will open this year’s BFI London Film Festival. Although the themes are universal, Mangrove is a London story. It may have happened 50 years ago, but it’s as relevant today as it was then.”
The movie, one of five in McQueen’s “Small Axe” anthology he is creating for the BBC, will be shown for free to festival ticket holders in cinemas across the U.K. as part of the London Film Festival’s offerings amid the Covid-19 pandemic. “Mangrove” and 11 other new films from the programme will screen in previews across Britain in participating cinemas, while more than 55 films will have virtual premieres online.
“Mangrove” will debut on the BBC later in the autumn.

  • Berlin Film Festival to Implement Gender Neutrality for Its Acting Awards

Other changes include the renaming of the Silver Bear Alfred Bauer Prize as a response to allegations linking film historian and former BIFF director Bauer to the Nazi movement.
    Aug 25, 2020
AceShowbiz – The organisers of the Berlin International Film Festival have decided their acting awards will no longer be attached to gender.
The prizegiving, which concludes the annual German festival, will feature Silver Bear honours, previously divided into actor and actress categories, for Best Leading Performance and Best Supporting Performance.
“We believe that not separating the awards in the acting field according to gender comprises a signal for a more gender-sensitive awareness in the film industry,” event directors Mariette Rissenbeek and Carlo Chatrian said.
Meanwhile, among other festival changes, an award formally known as the Silver Bear Alfred Bauer Prize has been renamed following allegations linking film historian and former BIFF director Bauer to the Nazi movement. The honour will now be referred to as the Silver Bear Jury Prize.
The BIFF is scheduled to run from February 11 to 18, 2021.

    Instagram

Judge Dave Hughes reveals that he and all his fellow panellists’ tests have come back negative after seven dancers were found to have the coronavirus, shutting down the show’s production.
    Aug 25, 2020
AceShowbiz – Dannii Minogue has tested negative for COVID-19, after seven dancers on the set of “The Masked Singer Australia” were found to have the coronavirus and production was shut down on the show.
An outbreak on the set of the programme meant filming of the finale was postponed as the cast and crew went into self isolation and underwent testing. And phoning in to Australian news show on Monday (August 24), Dannii’s fellow judge Dave Hughes revealed that he and all his fellow panellists’ tests had come back negative.
When asked by “The Project” host Carrie Bickmore if he had received his test results, Dave confirmed, “All the panellists, myself, and Osher (Gunsberg, host), we’ve all tested negative thankfully. We’re very grateful that the protocols set up by ‘The Masked Singer’ group mean that we’ve been able to test negative.”
“Our thoughts are with those who have tested positive, some of the cast members who have tested positive, and the dancers.”
Judge Jackie ‘O’ Henderson (Jackie O) had earlier announced that her COVID-19 test was negative live on her KIIS FM breakfast show, telling her listeners, “We all did our tests yesterday (Sunday) morning. We really feel for (the dancers). They’re young and they’d be naturally a little scared at the moment. It’s really sad that that happened actually.”

News about the outbreak came as the latest episode of the programme aired on Sunday night, with actress and model Sophie Monk unveiled as The Dragonfly.

  • Taron Egerton Calls Wolverine Casting Speculation Groundless Rumors

    Instagram

Though he was quick to set the record straight, the ‘Rocketman’ actor admits that he could not help but be flattered by the suggestion that he is being lined up to replace Hugh Jackman.
    Aug 25, 2020
AceShowbiz – Taron Egerton has denied rumours he’s being lined up to replace Hugh Jackman in the role of X-Men’s Wolverine.
Hugh announced he was stepping away from the role after playing the self-healing superhero for a ninth time in 2017’s “Logan”.
Fans have linked Taron to the role, but the “Rocketman” star insists there’s no truth to the speculation – even though he is flattered to be picked by some as the Aussie actor’s successor.
“That anyone thinks I would be good for the part is really flattering. I love Marvel, but it’s just fan stuff. There is no grounding for those rumours,” he tells GQ Hype.

The star is currently more concerned that the local theatre in Wales where he learnt his craft may be under threat as it has been forced to close during the COVID-19 pandemic.
“I’ve wanted to get back on stage for a long time and when something’s not there, you want it more,” he explains. “London theatre is a huge part of its economy and character, but what’s more alarming is provincial theatre.”
“For somebody like me, who came up through Aberystwyth Arts Centre, if that facility dies, my little sisters won’t have that opportunity and that’s really tragic.”
He has, however, enjoyed spending time at home following a hectic 2019 that saw him win plaudits and awards for his portrayal of Elton John in his biopic, “Rocketman”.
“As much as I enjoyed last year, with all the craziness, it’s nice to step away from the limelight,” he continues. “I’ve enjoyed being in my hometown. I feel like a member of a community.”

  • Garcelle Beauvais 'Thrilled' to Join 'The Real' as Co-Host

    Instagram

The show adds the ‘Real Housewives of Beverly Hills’ cast member to be one of the panelists after Tamera Mowry announced her departure from the talk show back in July.
    Aug 25, 2020
AceShowbiz – Garcelle Beauvais has been tapped to join “The Real” as a new co-host in its seventh season. The new season, which is set to kick off on September 21, will feature panelists that now include Garcelle, Loni Love, Jeannie Mai and Adrienne Bailon. Variety was the first to report the news.
“I am thrilled to be joining the dynamic, bold and diverse women on the award-winning talk show ‘The Real,’ ” “The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills” cast member says. “My love for pop culture and news, blended with my natural gift of gab, has always made me gravitate towards a talk show environment. It’s also exciting that it’s happening right after my amazing time joining ‘The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills’.”
Garcelle joins “The Real” after Tamera Mowry announced her departure from the talk show back in July. “For seven years, my home and heart has been at The Real. The friendships I’ve made there will last a lifetime, and the people that I’ve been blessed to interview have changed my life for the better,” Tamera wrote on July 13.
Sending message to her “fellow hosts,” Tamera wrote on Instagram, “I love you, I will miss you, and I will always be there for you. Thank you for teaching me, supporting me, and loving all for me. Sisters forever. I’ll be rooting for you, as I look forward to spending more time with my family, pursuing amazing new opportunities, and embarking on the next chapter of my life.”
Prior to this, Amanda Seales exited the morning talk show. “My contract is up at ‘The Real’ and I didn’t renew it, because it doesn’t feel good to my soul to be at a place where I can not, speak to my people the way they need to be spoken to. And where the people that are speaking to me in despairing ways are not being handled,” she explained her exit on Tuesday, June 2.
She went on saying, “I’m not at a space where as a full black woman I can have my voice and my co-workers also have their voices and where the people at the top are not respecting the necessity for black voices to be at the top too.”

  • Artem Chigvintsev to Dedicate Season 29 of 'Dancing with the Stars' to Baby Boy

    ABC

The professional dancer, who was dropped from the show’s lineup on the previous season, welcomed his first child with former wrestling star Nikki Bella in July.
    Aug 25, 2020
AceShowbiz – Artem Chigvintsev is returning to America’s “Dancing with the Stars” after he was dropped from the professional dancer lineup last season.
The 38-year-old, who welcomed his first child with former wrestling star Nikki Bella in July, announced his return for season 29 of the dancing competition on Monday’s (August 24) episode of “Good Morning America”.
“I just can’t wait to get back,” he gushed. “And I want to dedicate this season to my little boy.”

Artem’s comeback was hinted at on the morning show last week.
“He just had a baby with the love of his life, and she knows how to kick some ass,” the show teased.
The Russian native was unhappy after he was left out of the team of professionals last year (19), explaining that it came as a “massive shock,” and he only found out five days before the announcement was made.
“Obviously, it was a massive shock,” Chigvintsev said on “The Bellas Podcast” last August. “It’s not even a job, it’s a lifestyle if you’ve been doing it for a very long time. There was never a thought in my mind that I’m not going to be doing it.”
He added, “There’s always a chance, as a pro, you might be doing some performances on the show and there’s still an involvement in some sort. But getting this call, (hearing) ‘There’s gonna be no involvement in the show from now on,’ it’s like going through a breakup after 10 years.”
Dancer Sharna Burgess, who was also cut ahead of season 28, is also returning to the “DWTS” fold.
And in another stunning shake-up, when the show kicks off, Tyra Banks will be at the helm as the show’s new solo host. The news that the former “America’s Next Top Model” star will replace former hosts Tom Bergeron and Erin Andrews has had a mixed reception.
“Dancing with the Stars” returns to ABC on 14 September.

  • Emily Blunt Rumored to Replace Amber Heard as Mera in 'Aquaman' Sequel

    WENN/DC Entertainment

Amid the bad press due to her ongoing messy divorce battle with Johnny Depp, the ‘London Fields’ actress may be replaced by the ‘Mary Poppins Returns’ star in the ‘Aquaman’ sequel.
    Aug 25, 2020
AceShowbiz – The “Aquaman” sequel could see a new face as Mera. Words are Warner Bros. are considering to replace Amber Heard with Emily Blunt in the follow-up to the superhero film amid the former’s ongoing messy divorce battle with her ex Johnny Depp.
News of Heard’s possible firing from the DC franchise has been on the rounds on for months now and was first reported by We Got This Covered, which also got the tidbit about Blunt being a contender to take over the role. Back in February, the site claimed that studio execs wanted to recast the role of Mera due to the bad press surrounding Heard and the huge number of fans who are now turning against her.
Heard has been embroiled in a legal drama with her former husband Depp, whom she accused of domestic violence during their marriage. Depp paid Heard a settlement of US$7 million, which she donated to the ACLU and the Children’s Hospital Los Angeles.
Later in 2019, Depp sued Heard for defamation after she wrote an op-ed for The Washington Post in which she made a claim about being a victim of domestic abuse and alluded to allegations she made against Depp in their explosive 2016 divorce.
More details of the ex-couple’s nasty split were recently uncovered during Depp’s libel trial against U.K. tabloid The Sun and its publisher News Group Newspapers (NGN). While the tabloid branded the “Pirates of the Caribbean” actor a “wife-beater” in a 2018 article, fellow stars like Javier Bardem, Penelope Cruz and Winona Ryder have defended Depp in his defamation lawsuit against Heard.
As for Blunt, the actress received nominations for her role in 2018’s “Mary Poppins Returns” and won an SAG Award for best supporting actress for her performance in “A Quiet Place”, which was directed by her husband John Krasinski. The British actress returns for the sequel, “A Quiet Place Part II”, which release has been postponed to April 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
