Kourtney Kardashian Blames 'Toxic Environment' for Her 'KUWTK' Exit

    E!

In a new interview, Kourtney also talks about spending some time with her kids, Mason (10), Penelope (7) and Reign (5), saying, ‘I usually take one day on the weekend where we have no plans.’
    Jul 8, 2020
AceShowbiz – Kourtney Kardashian has always shown her decreasing will to film for her family TV show “Keeping Up with the Kardashians” to the point she announced that she quit the E! reality TV series. In her cover story for the July/August issue of Vogue Arabia, the Poosh founder gave insight into her big decision.
“I have been filming the show non-stop for 13 years, 19 seasons and six spin-off seasons,” the mother of three revealed to the magz. “I was feeling unfulfilled and it became a toxic environment for me to continue to have it occupy as much of my life as it was.”
Despite that, Kourtney shared she’s thankful for the show. “I am grateful for the incredible memories and life the show has given me and my family,” she shared.
During the interview, Kourtney also talked about spending some time with her kids, Mason (10), Penelope (7) and Reign (5). “I usually take one day on the weekend where we have no plans, we hang out at the house in pajamas or sweats. We sleep in. I like to not be on a schedule on that day,” she explained.
Kourtney announced that she stepped away from the long-running series, which also stars her family including Kim Kardashian, Khloe Kardashian, Kris Jenner, Kylie Jenner and Kendall Jenner, in an April episode after a physical altercation with Kim as the latter criticized her work ethic.
“I’m definitely disappointed in myself. I don’t think that my response was matching up with what her exact comment was,” Kourtney said of the brawl. “Being violent isn’t the answer, but it was just the build up of years and months and everything.”
“I just feel like every day, it’s like they just pick on me and I just can’t do it anymore,” a tearful Kourt expressed during a sit down with pals Malika Haqq and Khadijah Haqq McCray. “I feel like I’m almost more mad at Khloe than Kim, ’cause I expect it from Kim. But, like, Khloe just takes everyone’s side, always, except for me-when I’m not even asking her opinion.”
Eventually, Kourtney thought it was time for her to exit the show. “I have decided to take a big step back from filming and really just pick and choose what I will allow cameras to follow,” Kourtney shared. “I think just now when I have something that I find is interesting to film, or that I would feel excited to film, that I do that.”

  • Janelle Monae Keen to Play Storm in New 'X-Men' Movie

    WENN

The ‘Dirty Computer’ singer would love to be the next actress to play the Marvel female superhero made famous by Halle Berry in the ‘X-Men’ movie franchise.
    Jul 8, 2020
AceShowbiz – Janelle Monae wants to take over the role of Storm in the “X-Men” movie franchise.
The singer and actress created her 2018 album “Dirty Computer” in Atlanta, Georgia at the same time Ryan Coogler was filming his Marvel superhero movie Black Panther there – and reveals that spending time with its stars, like close pal Lupita Nyong’o, gave her a taste for comic book movies.
However, it’s the role made famous by Halle Berry she’s really got her eye on, telling Empire magazine, “I definitely have thrown it out there. One of my dreams has always been to play Storm.”
Storm, like the rest of the “X-Men” is a Marvel character, the mutant heroes have been kept apart from the main Marvel Cinematic Universe due to rights issues – which now could be resolved by Marvel Studios’ parent firm Disney’s purchase of 21st Century Fox.
The star says she’d love to see a Black Panther X-Men crossover, adding, “I don’t know if she comes in Black Panther, but it would be a dream to have her in it. I don’t know where they are with that.”
The actress currently in place as Storm is Alexandra Shipp, who played a younger version of the weather-altering mutant in the last two “X-Men” movies – but Janelle wants to be next in line.
“A lot of women have played Storm and they’ve done an exceptional job, and I would love to be in that line of artists and get to do Storm justice,” she explains.

  • Amy Pascal Denies Pushing Thandie Newton to Portray Black Stereotypes in 'Charlie's Angels'

    WENN

The ‘Westworld’ star says she was forced to turn down the 2000 ‘Charlie’s Angels’ movie because the former Sony boss allegedly pushed for black stereotypes with her role.
    Jul 8, 2020
AceShowbiz – Former Sony Pictures boss Amy Pascal has distanced herself from racist claims made by Thandie Newton in a new interview, insisting she has no recollection of the conversation she allegedly had with the actress.
In a new Vulture interview, the “Westworld” star reveals she was in negotiations for a role in the 2000 “Charlie’s Angels” remake when she was called in to meet then-Sony boss Pascal, who was fired in 2015 over leaked emails that were deemed insensitive and problematic for the movie company.
During the chat, Pascal allegedly told Newton there was a challenge in making her character “believable” as a college-educated woman and then suggested there could be a bar scene, where the Brit’s character “gets up on a table and starts shaking her booty.”
“She’s basically reeling off these stereotypes of how to be more convincing as a black character,” Newton recalled. “Everything she said, I was like, ‘Nah, I wouldn’t do that.’ She’s like, ‘Yeah, but you’re different. You’re different.’ ”
“That was Amy Pascal. That’s not really a surprise, is it? Let’s face it. I didn’t do the movie as a result.”
Pascal told Vulture, “While I take her words seriously, I have no recollection of the events she describes, nor do any of her representatives who were present at that casting session.”
“I’ve long considered Thandie a friend; I’m thankful that I’ve had the chance to make movies with her; and I hope to work with her again in the future.”
Newton also revealed she had an awkward meeting with the film’s director as he detailed the opening scene, which would focus on the actress’ body. “The director said to me, ‘I can’t wait for this. The first shot is going to be… You’re going to think it’s, like, yellow lines down a road, and you pull back and you realise it’s the stitching, because the denim is so tight on your a** it’s going to look like tarmac,’ ” Newton recalled. “I was like, ‘Oh, I don’t think we’re going to go down this road together.’ ”

    Instagram

Producer Peter Lenkov who also served as a showrunner on ‘Hawaii Five-0’ and ‘MacGyver’ TV reboots has been fired by The Eye following rumors of toxic work environments.
    Jul 8, 2020
AceShowbiz – The creator of the “Hawaii Five-0” and “Magnum P.I.” TV reboots has been fired from U.S. network CBS amid allegations suggesting he cultivated toxic work environments on set.
Writer and producer Peter Lenkov had served as showrunner on the revivals of “Magnum P.I.” and “MacGyver”, as well as “Hawaii Five-0”, which concluded its 10-season run at the channel in April (20).
However, on Tuesday (07Jul20), it was announced his relationship with network bosses had been terminated after executives received multiple complaints about his behind-the-scenes behaviour.
Sources tell The Hollywood Reporter Lenkov was accused of manipulative and abusive treatment of staff on both “Hawaii Five-0” and “MacGyver” while he was allegedly known as a misogynist and frequently talked down to writers, especially women and people of colour.
In response to the news, Lenkov issued a public apology to those affected and vowed to “do better” moving forward.
“Now is the time to listen and I am listening,” he shared in a statement to the publication. “It’s difficult to hear that the working environment I ran was not the working environment my colleagues deserved, and for that, I am deeply sorry.”
“I accept responsibility for what I am hearing and am committed to doing the work that is required to do better and be better.”
In light of Lenkov’s exit, executive producers Monica Macer and Eric Guggenheim have been promoted to showrunners on their respective series, “MacGyver” and “Magnum P.I.”

  • Thandie Newton Regrets Portraying Black Stereotypes in Movies, Hints at Friction With Spike Lee

    WENN

The ‘Solo: A Star Wars Story’ actress apologizes for taking roles that misinterpreted African Americans in the past and welcomes criticisms from fans and Hollywood pals.
    Jul 8, 2020
AceShowbiz – Thandie Newton regrets some of the roles she took on earlier in her career because of the way they misrepresented African-Americans.
The British actress gave an emotional interview to New York magazine’s Vulture, in which she opened up about her roles in movies such as 1995’s “Jefferson in Paris”, “Beloved”, and Oscar-winning movie “Crash”.
In “Jefferson in Paris” she played slave Sally Hemings, the “lover” of the then Ambassador of the United States to France before his presidency, and when asked how she saw the film in retrospect, the “Westworld” star candidly admitted she now found it problematic, along with her portrayals of African-Americans in general.
“I would definitely approach that film in a completely different way now. I would push for the film to be more about Sally Hemings and Thomas Jefferson,” she confessed. “And I think that had the DNA tests been done before the movie, they would have definitely wanted to make it more about that.”
In 1998, a DNA test published in the scientific journal Nature found strong evidence that Thomas Jefferson fathered at least one child with Hemings.
Newton continued, “I mean, she was his slave. It was rape.”
In her defence, she added, it was “my first big film” and she welcomed criticism from “any number of African-Americans… for that one.”
“Well, I don’t think it’s paranoia. Spike Lee and I had a little moment,” she said of the forthright director’s views on the role. “We’re always respectful when we see each other. But he wasn’t exactly knocking on my door asking me to work with him.”
“I can’t put words in his mouth of what he thought of it,” she continued. “I know the nature of this business has had me play roles that I’m embarrassed I played. It’s had me misrepresent African-Americans. Because I didn’t know.”
The Brit then suggested she had “not been of great service” in her career and apologised for getting emotional as she broke down in tears.
“I guess it’s been of service in one respect, because there’s a person of colour in a movie, but that can do more harm than good – let’s face it,” she said. “Anyway, sorry. God, wow. I’ve never cried in an interview before.”

  • Lin-Manuel Miranda Gracefully Accepts Criticisms of 'Hamilton' Glorifying Slave Owners

Amid the recent success of the ‘Hamilton’ movie debut, the musical is under scrutiny again over its portrayal of Alexander Hamilton, who has been accused of being complicit in the slave trade.
    Jul 8, 2020
AceShowbiz – Lin-Manuel Miranda has responded after “Hamilton” came under fire over accusation that it glorifies slave owners. In light of the massive success of the “Hamilton” movie which debuted this past weekend, the show is under scrutiny again over its portrayal of Alexander Hamilton, who has been accused of being complicit in the slave trade.
In the musical and the film, Hamilton is depicted as a “young, scrappy, and hungry” immigrant and someone who was passionate about the abolition of slavery. The real Alexander Hamilton, who was the inspiration behind the musical, has been accused of being complicit in the slave trade as he had several friends who owned slaves, including George Washington.
Though he despised slavery, Hamilton married into a prominent New York slave-holding family and managed the sale of slaves for his in-laws. He also did accounting for a Caribbean trading company that engaged in the slave trade.
Following the release of the movie version, people demand “Hamilton” cancellation, with the hashtag “#CancelHamilton” growing on Twitter. “How is Hamilton not canceled? Alexander Hamilton owned and traded slaves. I think we need to cancel Hamilton,” one person wrote on Twitter. Another added, “Hamilton was a slave trader. Tear down the statues NOW and #CancelHamilton.”
Writer Tracy Clayton posted a series of tweets debating the issue with “Hamilton”, writing that the play and the movie version “were given to us in two different worlds & our willingness to interrogate things in this way feels like a clear sign of change.”
The host of the weekly Netflix podcast “Strong Black Legends” added that “Hamilton” is “a flawed play about flawed people written by an imperfect person that gave my flawed and imperfect little life a big boost when i needed it most, so again i know im biased, but i do appreciate the change this illustrates & will be following the convo’s evolution.”
Miranda, who wrote the music and lyrics as well as starred in the original Broadway show, later responded to the backlash by commenting on the thread. Taking the criticisms in stride, he wrote, “Appreciate you so much, @brokeymcpoverty. All the criticisms are valid.”

Lin-Manuel Miranda responded to the ‘Hamilton’ backlash.
The 40-year-old playwright went on admitting his shortage in creating the musical, “The sheer tonnage of complexities & failings of these people I couldn’t get. Or wrestled with but cut. I took 6 years and fit as much as I could in a 2.5 hour musical. Did my best. It’s all fair game.”

Patrick Stewart Still Finds It Hard to Talk About Final 'Star Trek' Scene With Brent Spiner

    Paramount Television

During a SAG Foundation Conversations interview, the actor known for his portrayal of Captain Jean-Luc Picard explains why Commander Data’s death scene was so emotional for him.
    Jul 7, 2020
AceShowbiz – Sir Patrick Stewart still can’t talk about his final scene with longtime “Star Trek” co-star Brent Spiner without getting choked up.
The actor admits he and his old friend had to do a lot of personal preparation before shooting Commander Data’s death scene on “Star Trek: Picard”, because it was so emotional.
“I get choked up talking about it,” he said during a recent SAG Foundation Conversations interview. “Brent Spiner, who I love very much, and I have such a history going back 25 years… to be sitting quietly, just the two of us, for most of the day that scene took to shoot. We were talking about elements of our characters’ lives, but they were huge overlaps with our personal lives as well.”
“When the moment came to leave him I’d been asked to walk to the door, turn around and say, ‘Goodbye Commander’. I couldn’t do it because of all of the associations of Goodbye to Data, Goodbye to Brent Spiner, Goodbye to Star Trek; all of these things.”
Stewart insisted on taking the chair he used in the scene home, adding, “I asked if I could buy it because that chair took on so much importance.”
“This is sentimental trash but I can go and sit in that chair… and feel what I felt when I was alone on the set with Brent,” he smiled.
