Timothee Chalamet Recalls Struggles During 'Dune' Remake Filming in Jordan Desert

    Warner Bros. Pictures

Director Denis Villeneuve, in the meantime, admits that his latest adaptation of Frank Herbert’s book is ‘by far the most difficult thing’ he has done in his life.
    Apr 15, 2020
AceShowbiz – Timothee Chalamet struggled to shoot the new “Dune” remake in the heat of the Jordan desert.
Images of the actor in character as Paul Atreides have been released by Vanity Fair and Timothee tells the magazine there were nights he couldn’t sleep because it was so hot.
“I remember going out of my room at 2am, and it being probably 100 degrees,” he recalls. “The shooting temperature was sometimes 120 degrees. They put a cap on it out there, if it gets too hot. I forget what the exact number is, but you can’t keep working.”
Meanwhile, director Denis Villeneuve claims the sci-fi epic is the most difficult thing he’s ever put together.
“I would not agree to make this adaptation of the book with one single movie,” the “Blade Runner 2049” filmmaker tells Vanity Fair. “The world is too complex. It’s a world that takes its power in details.”
“It’s a book that tackles politics, religion, ecology, spirituality – and with a lot of characters. I think that’s why it’s so difficult. Honestly, it’s by far the most difficult thing I’ve done in my life.”

The latest adaptation of Frank Herbert’s book, also featuring Zendaya Coleman, Jason Momoa, Oscar Isaac and “No Country for Old Men” castmates Javier Bardem and Josh Brolin, is scheduled to hit cinemas on December 18.

Cannes Film Festival to Explore All Possibilities for Its 2020 Edition After Axing June-July Plans

Organizers vow to support the year of Cinema in a way or another although they have accepted that it will be difficult to hold the 73rd International Cannes Film Festival in its original form.
    Apr 15, 2020
AceShowbiz – Cannes Film Festival bosses are committed to staging an event to mark 2020 once the coronavirus restrictions have been relaxed, but they insist any gathering will not look like the typical South of France celebration.
The May event was rescheduled to late June, and then the beginning of July, but now festival chiefs accept Cannes is unlikely to go ahead “in its original form”.
“We acknowledged that the postponement of the 73rd International Cannes Film Festival, initially considered for the end of June to the beginning of July, is no longer an option,” a festival statement reads. “It is clearly difficult to assume that the Festival de Cannes could be held this year in its original form.”
“Nevertheless, since yesterday evening we have started many discussions with professionals, in France and abroad. They agree that the Festival de Cannes, an essential pillar for the film industry, must explore all contingencies allowing to support the year of Cinema by making Cannes 2020 real, in a way or another…”
“Each and everyone knows that many uncertainties are still reigning over the international health situation. We hope to be able to communicate promptly regarding the shapes that this Cannes 2020 will take.”
On Monday, April 13, French President Emmanuel Macron ruled all festivals or events with large gatherings would be cancelled until at least mid-July. All public gathering spaces, including cinemas, restaurants and bars will remain closed until further notice.
His decision comes as the COVID-19 death toll in France passes 10,000.

Don Cheadle May Leave Marvel Following 'Avengers: Endgame'

    Marvel Studios

The ‘Hotel Rwanda’ actor who takes over the War Machine role from Terrence Howard has revealed that he signed a six-picture deal which is completed with his appearance on the fourth ‘Avengers’ movie.
    Apr 15, 2020
AceShowbiz – Don Cheadle had just two hours to decide whether or not to take on the life-changing role of War Machine in the Marvel franchise.
The “Hotel Rwanda” star was celebrating his child’s birthday party when he received the call informing him that he had been chosen to appear in the blockbuster films as part of a six-picture deal.
Cheadle was overwhelmed by the offer, which would require him to commit to over a decade of productions – but he was given little time to think it over.
“I was actually at my kid’s birthday party – a laser tag party – and I got a call from my agent, and they said, ‘Hey, so I want to connect you to these Marvel guys. They want to talk to you, but they want to offer you the part…’,” he tells The Av Club. “They said, ‘Hey, this is the role. We want you to do this. It’s a six-picture deal’. I was like, ‘What?! Oh, uh, OK…’ And I’m trying to do the math. I’m like, ‘That’s 11 or 12 years. I’m not sure’. And they’re like, ‘Well, we need to know, because if you’re not saying yes, then we’re gonna move on to the next person. So you’ve got an hour.’ ”
He adds, “An hour to decide 12 years, and a role and parts that I don’t even know, in movies that are coming down that I have no idea what they’ll be. I said, ‘I’m at my kid’s laser tag party right now’. They said, ‘Oh! Oh, take two hours.’ ”
After talking the offer over with his wife, Bridgid Latrice Coulter, Cheadle decided it was a role worth taking.
“I go back inside, and I’m ducking behind things, playing laser tag, and talking to my wife,” he shares. “I’m like, ‘Should I take a flier on this? Is this something I should do?’ And she said, ‘Well, yeah, I guess so. All things being equal, this is that kind of thing. You’ve never done anything like this before. Big special effects, tent pole, four-quadrant movie. Do you want to do something like this?’ I said, ‘I kind of do.’ ”
The actor took over the role of War Machine, also known as Col. James ‘Rhodey’ Rhodes, from Terrence Howard after the “Empire” star, who portrayed the character in the first “Iron Man” film, left the franchise following creative disagreements with the producers.
Ironically, Cheadle was up for the role before it was offered to Howard, “Early on, I had met on that role, and there were different factions and producers who wanted me and others that wanted Terrence, and the biggest voice in the room for that won, and Terrence got the part,” he adds. “I thought he was great in the first (Iron Man). And then through some stuff that is well-documented that they went through behind the scenes, it wasn’t his part anymore, so I got a call.”

Timothee Chalamet Is Reluctant Hero in First Look at Denis Villeneuve's 'Dune'

    WENN

The ‘Call Me by Your Name’ star plays young royal Paul Atreides, who prepares to leave the comfortable life on his native planet of Caladan for a desolate, dangerous mining planet known as Arrakis.
    Apr 14, 2020
AceShowbiz – Warner Bros. Pictures has unveiled the first look at “Dune” remake to tide fans over the upcoming release of the movie. Making its way out via Vanity Fair, the photo gives the spotlight to the lead character, Timothee Chalamet’s Paul Atreides, the scion of House Atreides.
In the image, the central hero is featured on his native planet of Caladan. The young royal looks gloomy as he strolls the shores, with some transport ships descending to take the Atreides leadership to their new destination, according to the site.

Timothee Chalamet’s Paul Atreides strolls the shores in his native planet of Caladan.
In the new adaptation of Frank Herbert’s 1965 sci-fi novel of the same name, the story begins as Paul Atreides prepares to leave the comfortable life he knows for a desolate, dangerous mining planet known as Arrakis, where his wealthy family will oversee extraction of a spice vital to the galaxy.
Describing his character, Chalamet says “the protagonist is on an anti-hero’s-journey of sorts,” thus explaining his somber expression in the photo. He continues, “He thinks he’s going to be sort of a young general studying his father and his leadership of a fighting force before he comes of age, hopefully a decade later, or something like that.”
Upon their arrival in Arrakis, the Atreides family will face the opposition of the brutal rival House Harkonnen, “which seeks to exploit the desert world they are about to inherit.” Paul’s parents Duke Leto and Lady Jessica Atreides, played by Oscar Isaac and Rebecca Ferguson (II) respectively, “must not only manage the spice mining on Arrakis, but also the politics at play in the broader galaxy.”
Finding himself at the center of an intergalactic power struggle, Paul has to accept his fate as a sort of hero to protect his family. Being taught the ways of war by a veteran soldier named Gurney Halleck, played by Josh Brolin, he will be revealed to possess powers even his trainers could not anticipate.
“Dune” is directed by Denis Villeneuve with a screenplay by Eric Roth, Jon Spaihts and Villeneuve. It is scheduled for a December 18 released in the U.S. ” ‘Dune’ was made by people from all over the world. Many of these people are like family to me, and they’re very much in my thoughts,” says Villeneuve. “I’m so proud to showcase their hard work. I look forward to a time when we can all get together again as Dune was made to be seen on the big screen.”

Daisy Ridley Finds the Lukewarm Response to 'Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker' Upsetting

    Walt Disney Pictures

During a sit-down with the DragCast podcast, the actress playing Rey in the ‘Star Wars’ sequel trilogy admits to have struggled accepting the backlash in the beginning of 2020.
    Apr 14, 2020
AceShowbiz – Daisy Ridley had a terrible start to the year as she could no longer feel the love from critical “Star Wars” fans, who hated her final film in the franchise.
“Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker” was mauled by critics and fans alike when it opened in late December (19), and Daisy was still struggling with the backlash as 2020 began.
“This last film was really tricky,” Ridley said during a sit-down with the DragCast podcast. “January was not that nice. It was weird, I felt like all of this love that we’d sort of been shown the first time around, I was like, ‘Where’s the love gone?’ ”
She adds that she and the cast shared an experience “filled with love” on set, making it all the more difficult to accept the lukewarm response.
“I watched the documentary, the making-of (‘The Skywalker Legacy’), this week,” Ridley continued, referencing the documentary on the film’s Blu-Ray release, “and it’s so filled with love, and I think it’s that tricky thing of when you’re part of something that is so filled with love and then people (don’t like it). You know, everyone’s entitled to not like something, but it feels like it’s changed slightly.”
Ridley admitted she had a hard time avoiding negative articles and reactions because they flooded her social media feeds.

“I guess now conversations are just more public, so there’s stuff I wouldn’t have seen, but honestly trying to scroll through my newsfeed in January and trying to not see ‘Star Wars’ stuff, I’d see headlines and be like ‘Oh my God, this is so upsetting,’ ” she shares.
