Leslie Jones Only Votes for Cynthia Erivo for 2020 Oscars and Ignores the Rest

    WENN/Instar/Adriana M. Barraza

Ahead of the highly-anticipated Academy Awards, the ‘Saturday Night Live’ funnywoman tells her online devotees she only voted for black people for the awards show.
    Feb 10, 2020
AceShowbiz – Leslie Jones has taken a stand against the 2020 Academy Awards by only voting in categories that included people of colour.
The Academy has come under fire since revealing the nominations for this year’s Oscars, after announcing an all-male directors shortlist and Cynthia Erivo as the only black nominee across the acting categories.
Taking to social media, actress and comedian Leslie, who’s been a member of the Oscars voting pool the last few years, revealed she only voted in categories that included a diverse selection of nominees.
“Welp I just finished voting for the Oscars,” she penned. “It didn’t take long cause there are no black people on it. So I voted for @cynthiaerivo and abstained from the rest.”
She also included the hashtag, “#moreblackpeopleplease.”
The “Ghostbusters” star later amended her initial post after people reminded her that Matthew Cherry’s “Hair Love” was nominated for Best Animated Short Film.
“Ok geeeez yes I voted for @MatthewACherry tooo didn’t think I needed to say that! The post was obvious! No chill. His film was on before @AngryBirdsMovie #iswearimdonewithyall”
The 2020 Oscars take place on Sunday, February 9, 2020 at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles.

Interview – Writer Esohe Uwadiae on She Is A Place Called Home

Following its development on the VAULT Festival New Writers’ Programme 2019, a sold-out showcase at VAULT Festival 2019, and being shortlisted for the Untapped Award, She Is A Place Called Home is heading back to VAULT Festival 2020, 3– 8 March, for a seven-show run. Before it does, writer Esohe Uwadiae talked to Everything Theatre about the show’s development and its partnership with Solace Women’s Aid.
So, tell us a little about the play.
The show follows two British Nigerian sisters dealing with the fall out within their family as a result of their Dad’s decision to get another wife (as in, in addition to their mum). It portrays how they navigate the impact of this on things like their Christian faith, how they see their parents and their ability to plan for their future. One of the themes running throughout the show is how the existence of multiple cultural lenses contributes to different explanations being assigned to the same action. For instance, what might be adultery or bigamy to one person, is a legitimate right to another. But it raises the question of how we navigate the cultural clashes this inevitably leads to and whether there can be reconciliation.
The show also explores the experience of mental illness by black women, particularly those who have had to take on the role of the ‘strong black woman’, and how a familial crisis can take them to breaking point, jeopardising things like eating disorder recovery and their sense of self.
You are a graduate of the VAULT Festival New Writers’ Programme, how has that helped in developing this play?
I seriously doubt that this play would exist but for the programme. I don’t think I would have had the confidence or knowledge to be able to write it. Over the course of the programme we got to meet with some amazing writers working in the industry like Morgan Lloyd Malcolm (Emilia, The Wasp) and Henry Shields (Groan Ups, The Play That Went Wrong). We also got to watch a huge number of shows at the VAULT Festival (I saw about 60), which allowed me to really expand my knowledge of theatre, figure out what I liked, what I didn’t like, and the different ways a story can be told.
The programme was led and developed by Camilla Whitehill (Freeman, Where Do Little Birds Go?) who really dared us to be fearless in our writing. For that I am incredibly grateful as it allowed me to write without being self-conscious. It also gave me the confidence to begin pursuing other opportunities. For instance, I recently finished the Royal Court Theatre’s Introductory Writers’ Group and I’m almost done writing my second play as part of it.
2020 marks the third year of the programme and I would so recommend it to anyone interested in playwriting. I knew basically nothing when I applied and that’s the point! It exists to support new writers, so come exactly as you are with all of your amazing ideas.
You are partnering with Solace Women’s Aid, has that helped in devising the story?
Throughout the play we touch on different kinds of non-physical methods of abuse which Solace provides support for. As the story is told from the perspective of the two sisters, there is a particular focus on the impact on those whose lives are secondarily affected by violence.
Key values inherent in Solace’s work is that of empathy and non-judgement of people who find themselves in a situation of domestic violence. This overlaps with one of the big questions this play tries to address, specifically why women might remain in less than ideal situations like this. For me, it was really important to explore this in a way that embodies those values, while being true to the experience of the sisters whose lives are also affected. Through the play, I hope to highlight some of the structures that contribute to this, including the practice of paying bride price (also known as dowry), family pressure and gender expectations.
At the end of each show, we will be running a collection to support Solace’s work. This includes monetary donations, but also donations of toiletries like body wash, toothbrushes and sanitary products.
You can find out more about their work here: https://www.solacewomensaid.org/.
What do you hope people will walk away from the play thinking about?
Sisterhood is at the very heart of this play. I’ve tried to portray a relationship that is raw and honest, one that shows the lengths we go to for the ones we love, but also the cruelty that is sometimes there. Writing this play made me reflect a lot on my relationship with my sisters and it left me incredibly thankful for their existence. I hope people walk away feeling the same renewed sense of gratefulness.
More generally though, I hope people enjoy the brief glimpse this show provides into the many wonderful things about Nigeria and its culture, like the music and the dancing and the clothes.
Given home is clearly a theme, where do you call home right now?
Geographically speaking, Essex. On a more sentimental note, my home will always be where my family is.

She Is A Place Called Home is on at VAULT Festival from 3 – 8 March. Tickets available here More

Lili Reinhart Responds as Her Show 'Riverdale' Is Accused of Contributing to Body Image Issues

    The CW

The CW teen drama television series based on Archie Comics is criticized for portraying unrealistic body images that could lead to youngsters suffering from body image issues.
    Feb 9, 2020
AceShowbiz – Lili Reinhart is “intimidated” when she compares her body to that of her “Riverdale” castmates.
The 23-year-old actress, who plays Betty Cooper in the programme, was responding to a fan who tweeted her asking why everyone on the U.S. TV show has “perfectly chiselled bodies,” with the viewer continuing, “Don’t you think TV shows like this aimed at teenagers are contributing to unrealistic body expectations body image issues?”
Replying, Lili insisted she didn’t want anybody to feel body shamed by the CW show, explaining, “Actually, not everyone on this show is perfectly chiseled. And even I feel intimidated by the physique of my surrounding cast mates sometimes when I have to do bra/underwear scenes.”
“I’ve felt very insecure due to the expectation that people have for women on tv, what they should look like. But I have come to terms with my body and that I’m not the kind of person you would see walking on a runway during fashion week. I have bigger boobs, I have cellulite on my thighs/butt, and my stomach sticks out rather than curves in.”
Lili continued to tell the fan she feels an “obligation” to “be strong and show confidence in myself, looking as I do.”
“And I want other young women to see my body on tv and feel comfort in the fact that I’m not a size 0. And I’m not a perfect hourglass shape,” she said. “This industry struggles with accurate representation of female and male bodies. So I commend the women who have helped our industry take a step in the right – and authentic – direction. (Charli Howard being my favourite role model).”
Charli Howard is a British plus-size model and body activist.

Willem Dafoe Finds It Hard to Bond With Robert Pattinson on Movie Set

    A24

The ‘Murder on the Orient Express’ actor explains why he couldn’t bond with his co-star on the set of Robert Eggers’ psychological horror ‘The Lighthouse’.
    Feb 9, 2020
AceShowbiz – Willem Dafoe and Robert Pattinson were so intensely into their brooding characters while filming “The Lighthouse”, they didn’t “meet” each other properly until they started promoting the film.
Dafoe tells WENN he and his co-star didn’t get to know each other during the shoot, because their characters disliked one another.
“We were shooting in very difficult circumstances because a lot of it’s outdoors and we’re on this rocky peninsula, where we built this lighthouse,” he explains. “The weather was really extreme, really strong. So basically, I just knew him within the scenes and through the characters we were playing.”
“We were working long hours and constantly changing to stay dry, just trying to survive the weather.”
“Even when we’re in the interiors, it’s really cold and wet with flooding, so whenever you get a moment when you’re not working, you retreat to change clothes and prepare for the next scene.”
“I lived in a little fisherman’s cottage, while Robert lived in town, so we never saw each other outside of the movie. It was only afterwards, when we started doing press, that we hung out a little bit and I got to know him.”
In the black and white movie, Dafoe plays an eccentric lighthouse keeper and “Twilight” star Pattinson his troubled assistant.

Evelyn Lozada Hints at 'Basketball Wives' Exit as She Reveals New Romance

    Instagram

The VH1 star receives so many wide-ranging questions on Instagram from her relationship with fellow ‘Basketball Wives’ cast members to her next plan for the show.
    Feb 8, 2020
AceShowbiz – Evelyn Lozada is in the mood of spilling some tea. The “Basketball Wives” star recently answered some inquiries from her fans during a Q&A session on her Instagram account.
The VH1 star received so many wide-ranging questions from her relationship with fellow “Basketball Wives” cast members to her next plan for the show. “Are you & Shaunie good??” one fan asked, referring to “BBW” executive producer and co-star Shaunie O’Neal. In response, Evelyn gushes over the ex-wife of Shaquille O’Neal, saying that she’s her “bestie for life.”
Another asked if she ever missed her ex-husband, former NFL star Chad Ochocinco. “Do you ever miss Chad…it honestly seems like he used to make you laugh all the time?” the question read. She replied, “The crying outweighed the laughter & no everyone has moved one.”
Someone else asked if she planned to get married again, and Evelyn said, “Yes!!!! This would be my first! Not sure what that other BS was.” That opened another question that read, “Are you still single?” She said, “No,” alongside a sticking out tongue emoji.
However, Evelyn made it clear that the new man wasn’t her ex-fiance, former MLB star Carl Crawford. “LOL! No,” she responded to a fan who asked if they would ever get back together. “But we’re cool friends and we love & adore.”
She also talked about whether or not she would be returning for upcoming 9th season of “Basketball Wives”. Judging from her answer, however, fans seemingly wouldn’t be able to see her on the show. “Most likely no,” she replied.
Fans were happy knowing that she wouldn’t return. “She doesn’t have an interesting storyline.. honestly. The drama gets old,” one commenter wrote. Someone else thought that Ogom OG Chijindu, with whom she’s beefing on the show, made her leave the show. “Oh now she don’t wanna be on basketball wives! OG ran her away lmao.”

“The crying outweighed the laughter but you reached out to the person that made you so miserable to get back at OG… make it make sense,” another person said.

Margot Robbie Confident 'Birds of Prey' Will Receive Positive Response

    Warner Bros. Pictures

Speaking about the ‘Suicide Squad’ spin-off, the ‘Bombshell’ actress believes her character Harley Quinn defies expectations and social norms in every way.
    Feb 8, 2020
AceShowbiz – Margot Robbie’s new “Suicide Squad” spin-off “Birds of Prey: And the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn” “defies expectations in every way,” according to the star.
The Australian actress, 29, reprises her role as Harley Quinn in the forthcoming movie, and she told Fox News it’s the stereotypes she breaks that makes the character special.
“I think the mere fact that we eliminated a romantic storyline kind of goes against what we’re used to or accustomed to seeing in a film when you have a female protagonist,” she said. “I think Harley defies expectations in every way, she defies social norms in every way and that’s just part of her (behaviour).”
And the star insisted she’s not worried about pushing the boundaries, as it’s what audiences want.
“I think people are really responding to something different these days,” she explained. “I think any time a movie or TV show is seemingly breaking the mold, people seem to respond extremely positively and I think that will happen in this case.”
Robbie went on to suggest “Birds of Prey” is “fresh and different,” and unlike any other comic book film to date, adding it was “so fun” to reprise the role she originated in the 2016 film “Suicide Squad”.
“Birds of Prey”, also starring Jurnee Smollett, Mary Elizabeth Winstead and Rosie Perez, is out now.
