Cynthia Erivo Keen to Explore Her Sexuality on Screen

    Instagram

The ‘Harriet’ actress says in a new interview that she would love to play a character that shows black women’s sensuality or do a superhero movie like ‘Black Panther’.
    Feb 2, 2020
AceShowbiz – Oscar-nominee Cynthia Erivo wants to explore her sexuality on screen as she feels Hollywood is failing to show black women’s sensuality.
The British star’s performance as abolitionist activist Harriet Tubman in “Harriet” has landed her a Best Actress nomination at the Academy Awards, in addition to a Best Original Song nod, and she hopes her success will land her a greater variety of parts.
In an interview with writer and activist Roxane Gay for The Hollywood Reporter, Cynthia reveals she is often cast as characters who are “asexual” and would like to explore more of her romantic side on screen.
“I would like to play the role of a woman who has sexuality,” she explains. “For some reason, I don’t know whether it is specifically black women, but our roles lack sexuality. It’s like we can’t be bad**s and human and sexual at the same time.”
“I just don’t understand that. One of my favorite films is Call Me by Your Name, because of how tender and sensual it is. I still haven’t seen that for a black woman. That’s what I’m looking for.”
Asked about directors she’d like to work with in the future, the 32-year-old lists Ryan Coogler, Ava DuVernay, and Barry Jenkins – and also adds that she’d love to do a superhero movie like Coogler’s “Black Panther”.
“My body is suited to it,” she shares. “And I’d love to see what that experience is like. I think I could have a good time doing it.”
If she wins at next month’s ceremony, Cynthia will become the youngest ever star to complete an EGOT – wins at the Emmys, Grammys. Oscars, and Tonys – but says she’s relaxed about making history.
“I think I’ve said ‘EGOT’ less than everybody else,” the star explains. “I don’t know that it’s that I care less or that it’s not the most important thing to me. It really is and it really has been about getting good work and playing roles I feel are good for me.”

Erin Doherty: I Had Minor Meltdown After Landing a Role on 'The Crown'

    Netflix

Speaking at the Newport Beach Film Festival Awards, the actress playing Princess Anne on the Netflix hit series confesses the pressure of playing a well-known public figure got to her.
    Feb 1, 2020
AceShowbiz – Actress Erin Doherty suffered a “minor meltdown” after landing her role as British royal Princess Anne in “The Crown”.
The star joined the hit Netflix show for its third season and, speaking at the Newport Beach Film Festival Awards, she confessed the pressure of playing a well-known public figure got to her.
“I have hidden from a lot of it (press attention). It is your thing for so long, and then it is released and people are suddenly aware of you,” the actress, who has appeared in British TV shows “Call the Midwife” and the BBC’s version of “Les Miserables”, said, reported U.K. newspaper the Evening Standard.
“It was an overload for me. So I turned away from it. I got the job. And then I had a minor meltdown. I thought so many people will be like, ‘She wasn’t what I thought she would be.’ I had to be like, ‘You know what, this is my version of this woman.'”
She added: “Also, not a lot of people of our generation knew her. So in a way it was an introduction.”
And despite feeling prepared after studying videos of the Queen’s daughter on YouTube, she confessed working alongside such a high-profile cast also affected her.
“The whole first week for me was like, ‘Erin, calm down’,” she said. “My legs were shaking. I was shaking because there was Helena Bonham Carter, Olivia Colman. It was a lot.”
Season three of “The Crown” is out now.

    Feb 1, 2020
AceShowbiz – Harley Bird, the voice behind children’s TV favourite “Peppa Pig”, is stepping down from the role after 13 years.
The 18-year-old began voicing the cartoon pig when she was just five years old, but is set to be replaced by nine-year-old Amelie Bea Smith, who becomes the fourth actress to take on character.
Bird, who won a BAFTA for the role in 2011 and performed songs for the recent “Peppa Pig My First Album” release, said, “Becoming the voice of Peppa Pig at the age of five was the start of an incredible journey, and I’ll never forget my time on the show.”

Gugu Mbatha-Raw Calls Awards Shows' Lack of Inclusivity 'Discouraging'

    WENN/Instar

Taking to the stage at the annual Newport Beach U.K. Honors event in London, ‘The Morning Show’ actress encourages others to remember that they are ‘part of a community.’
    Feb 1, 2020
AceShowbiz – British actress Gugu Mbatha-Raw has criticised those running awards shows for failing to make them inclusive.
The “Belle” star took to the stage at the annual Newport Beach U.K. Honours event in London on Wednesday, January 29, where she was named a Breakthrough Artist, and claimed that the lack of diversity among nominees for this year’s awards has been “discouraging”.
According to Variety, she told attendees: “At this time, when many of our most high-profile ceremonies and very prestigious awards are potentially showing a very stark lack of inclusivity, being here and seeing…what an incredibly diverse and wonderful talented group of people we have, it encourages me that those other ceremonies are not for want of talent.”
Encouraging those present, who included “Queen & Slim” actress Jodie Turner-Smith, and “Sex Education”‘s Ncuti Gatwa, to stick together, Gugu added: “This can be a discouraging business at times and we all need these moments to remember that we’re part of a community.”
“The Morning Show” star’s comments come after BAFTAs chiefs came under fire after all the nominees in their acting categories were white, prompting the U.K. arm of the Time’s Up organisation to launch a social media campaign recognising those left off the shortlist.
No female filmmakers were nominated for the Best Director prize, with the Oscars and Golden Globes also featuring all-male shortlist in their own directing categories. “Harriet” star Cynthia Erivo is also the only person of colour nominated in an acting category at this year’s Academy Awards.

Interview: Rosie Day on ‘Instructions For A Teenage Armageddon’

Dubbed a ‘Screen International Star of Tomorrow’ by Screen Daily, Rosie Day has starred on the big screen alongside such names as Sarah Jessica Parker and Uma Thurman, and with Phillip Glenister and Lesley Sharp in the Sky One comedy/drama Living The Dream. Her next role, however, sees her return to the stage in Instructions For A Teenage Armageddon, playing from 17 to 29 February at The Old Red Lion Theatre.
Everything Theatre caught up with Rosie to chat about the play, the associated podcast and not going on holiday for seven years!
What can we expect from your show, and who do you hope to attract to the audience?
It’s a coming of age story but with some slightly dark humour, tackling the experience of a young girl who’s lived through quite a lot for 16, due to her sister’s death. It touches on mental health, sisterhood, rebellion and a whole lot of scouts! I hope the show encourages teenagers and young people to come, especially young women, as I’ve found in the past that not many shows revolve around a young girl and her story. I wanted to put the microphone back in the hands of a teenage girl.
Did you conceive the show whilst a teenager, or are you drawing on experiences from your teenage years?
I came up with the show as a dare! I was working with an amazing director called Hannah Price, and she sort of challenged me to write a one woman play. I play a lot of teenagers and young women, and I’ve often found myself frustrated by how they’re written, so wanted a chance to depict, hopefully realistically, their experience. I’m also an ambassador of a teenage mental health charity STEM4, so have had lots of experiences tackling mental health with young people.
There is going to be a podcast around the show as well, what can we expect from that?
Yes! Teenage Armageddon, the podcast is currently being recorded! It’s a podcast to inspire and empower young women. Each episode is divided in two, the first half with an adult who is successful in their career talking about their experience growing up, dispensing advice, funny stories etc, and the second with a hugely inspirational teenager who’s achieving incredible things at a young age. We just recorded Syrian refugee and speaker for the UN Maya Ghazal, who speaks on behalf of the rights of young migrants and refugees, and she honestly left me gobsmacked at how inspiring she is.
You’re already described as an actress, writer and director, how on earth have you crammed so much into your life already?
I haven’t been on holiday in seven years! Honestly though, I grew up acting, and will always love it and want to do it, but I have a total love of creating, being the creator of the work, telling stories (for young women usually!) so it seemed like a natural progression into directing and writing.
You’ve performed with some very big names, do you feel this was more beneficial than formal acting training?
Yes, absolutely; I think you learn something from every job you do. I grew up watching the actors I was surrounded by and essentially copied them. One of the reasons I love doing theatre is that I learn so much; things others may have got from drama school.
You clearly have a big future ahead, do you envisage that it will be on the stage, in front of a camera, or even behind it? And do you prefer one over the other at the moment?
I’ve just finished directing my second short, and have a feature in pre- production, all written by myself, so I definitely see me writing a lot more, but acting will always be my first passion, and theatre trumps everything else for me.
Given you’ve acted with such big names and in such big productions, how does it feel to be heading to somewhere so much smaller and intimate, in the Old Red Lion?
Terrifying. You can literally see people’s reactions as you go!
Finally, what does the future hold for both you and Instructions For A Teenage Armageddon?
Who knows? It’s not an industry you can predict! You just have to hope the work you make resonates with people on some level.
Instructions For A Teenage Armageddon will be playing at Old Red Lion between 17 and 29 February. Tickets are available here More

Billy Porter Stirs Debate as He Appears on 'Sesame Street' in His Oscars Gown

    Instagram

While some people feel conflicted about the show introducing the concept of gender fluidity to kids, some parents have declared a ban on the children’s series.
    Feb 1, 2020
AceShowbiz – Billy Porter has sparked a controversy with his upcoming appearance on “Sesame Street”. An LGBTQ activist, the actor has broken barrier with his gender-fluid fashion and that’s apparently the message that the show is going to deliver to children with his guest stint.
Teasing the forthcoming season 51, the show’s official Instagram page posted a photo of the “Pose” star sporting his black velvet tuxedo gown that he wore to the 2019 Academy Awards. “@theebillyporter bringing those fierce vibes to Sesame Street for #Season51,” so read the caption.
The photo has since received mixed responses from social media users, with some feeling conflicted about the show introducing the concept of gender fluidity to kids. “I’m not against it but I’m not for it either,” one argued. “It’s the parents responsibility to teach your children that love comes in all shapes sizes colors and it doesn’t matter what you wear. If they’re teaching them something important why should it matter what they have on or who they love. It doesn’t matter. ITS LOVE!”
Another agreed with the first user and wrote, “This is not okay… Him wearing this is his choice and yes, that is okay… However, you need to leave subjects like this alone and allow the parents to educate their own children when they feel the time is right.”
One other user added, “So sad to see this on Sesame Street, this is not what we grow up on, this is not about acceptance or love. This is trying to force someone’s lifestyle onto our children, this is confusing and dangerous.”
Some parents have made it clear that they won’t let their kids watch the show because of this. “Well! No more Sesame Street for my kids. Shame since I’ve watched you since I was little. Now you alienate white children and show them men with dresses on. SHAME ON YOU,” one declared. Another remarked, “My kids won’t be watching that.”
There were also some people who completely supported the show’s decision to teach kids about embracing diversity by featuring Billy in dress. “this is another teachable moment from Sesame Street and a great one at that .. Well done Guys,” one applauded the show. Another added, “Proud to watch Sesame Street! Proud of those who understand Sesame Street is about acceptance and inclusion! Diversity matters!”
Billy and “Sesame Street” have not reacted to the debate regarding his upcoming appearance on the children’s TV series.

Meghan Trainor Hysterical Over Dr. Phil's Surprise Appearance During 'Carpool Karaoke'

    CBS

Taking part in the musical segment of ‘The Late Late Show with James Corden’, the ‘All About That Bass’ hitmaker admits to watching the self-help guru’s show on YouTube every morning.
    Feb 1, 2020
AceShowbiz – Pop star Meghan Trainor feared she would “throw up” in excitement after TV doctor Phil McGraw crashed her appearance on Carpool Karaoke.
The “All About That Bass” hitmaker was belting out her songs with comedian James Corden for the musical segment of Thursday night’s, January 30, “The Late Late Show with James Corden” when Dr. Phil climbed into the backseat of their car, much to Trainor’s surprise.
The thrilled singer, who had just confessed to watching the self-help guru’s show on YouTube every morning, squealed at the sight of the TV medic, and said, “I’m gonna throw up! I’m so excited! Your teeth look so good.”
His presence inspired Trainor to share a little about the mental health struggles she overcame following her second operation for vocal cord issues in 2017.
“I wrote an album called ‘Treat Myself’ because I went through panic disorder,” she explained. “I was in the red zone of anxiety, where it was giving me hot flashes. Two years later I’m slaying (killing it). But I was uneducated about what anxiety could do to your body.”
    [embedded content]
Praising the 26-year-old for opening up so publicly about her personal troubles, Dr. Phil replied, “Isn’t it great that you’re willing to talk about it? There’s a lot of people who go through this and go, ‘Oh, no, I got a stigma, I don’t want to talk about it.’ ”
“But when you talk about it, you have no idea how many millions of people will say, ‘Well if she can talk about it, I can talk about it.’ When you talk about it, it gives it a face, it gives it a voice.”
