French's Oscars Slammed for Giving Roman Polanski Many Nominations

    WENN

However, the head of Cesars Awards defends the organization’s decision as women’s rights activists stress that the director, who fled to the U.S. after his rape conviction, should not be celebrated.
    Jan 30, 2020
AceShowbiz – French feminists have attacked the Cesar Awards’ voters after they gave exiled director Roman Polanski’s new film 12 nominations at the country’s equivalent of the Oscars.
The controversial filmmaker, who was convicted of statutory rape in the U.S. in 1977, became the toast of the French film industry on Wednesday morning (January 29), thanks to the success of his film “An Officer and a Spy”.
However, women’s rights activists are outraged the Polish-French filmmaker, who fled the U.S. after his rape conviction, is being celebrated.
Celine Piques, the spokeswoman for French feminist organisation Osez le Feminisme (Dare to be Feminist) told French TV channel LCI, “I am shocked. The 400 cinema professionals who voted for this nomination have applauded Polanski with 12 nominations – 12 is also the number of women today who accuse Roman Polanski of rape. This is not the field of morality, this is the field of justice.”
But Alain Terzian, the head of the Cesars, has defended Polanski’s nominations, insisting “moral positions” should not affect the awards.
In September (19), Polanski’s latest film landed the Grand Jury Prize at the Venice Film Festival in Italy, two months before former actress Valentine Monnier accused the moviemaker of an “extremely violent” assault and rape in 1975, when she was 18.
Hers is the latest in a long line of sexual assault accusations against the director.
This isn’t the first time Polanski has created controversy at the Cesars – in 2017, he was asked to head the award show’s jury, but stepped down after a barrage of outrage.
Polanski confessed to having unlawful sex with Samantha Geimer, a minor, at a Hollywood party, and served 42 days in prison, but later fled the U.S. over concerns that a plea bargain deal would be scrapped.
He has evaded various extradition attempts over the years by U.S. authorities, who are still keen for Polanski to face justice on American soil.

Mel Gibson and Danny Glover Set to Return for 'Lethal Weapon 5'

    Warner Bros.

Producer Daniel Lin claims that Warner Bros. has been working to bring a fifth and final ‘Lethal Weapon’ film, with director Richard Donner also on board to return for the new installment.
    Jan 30, 2020
AceShowbiz – A new “Lethal Weapon” movie could be coming more than 20 years since the last film hit theaters. According to producer Daniel Lin, the original main actors, Mel Gibson and Danny Glover, are ready to return for the fifth and final installment of the buddy cop action comedy film series.
During The Hollywood Reporter’s Producers Roundtable chat, Lin said, “We’re trying to make the last ‘Lethal Weapon’ movie.” He added, “The original cast is coming back… Mel and Danny are ready to go.”
Lin, who has produced movies like “Sherlock Holmes”, “It”, “Gangster Squad” and “The Lego Movie”, additionally claimed that Dick Donner, who helmed all four “Lethal Weapon” movies, is on board to return for the fifth movie. “And Dick Donner’s coming back,” he said.
He went on gushing, “And it’s just amazing. The story itself is very personal to him.” While the project has not received an official green light yet, Lin said it’s now just “about the script.”
    [embedded content]
Talks about the potential “Lethal Weapon 5” first started in 2007, but it never showed any actual progress. Then in 2017, Gibson hinted that the fifth movie was in development, with Donner likely returning in the director’s chair.
Also dishing on the upcoming installment, Donner said last year that if the movie ended up being made, it would be called “Lethal Finale” and would be “very dark.” He said that Channing Gibson, who penned the fourth movie, was writing the script of the fifth movie. Donner, however, said on the Maltin on Movies podcast that he wasn’t too confident of it getting the green light.
The first “Lethal Weapon” movie was released in 1987. It follows near-retirement homicide detective Roger Murtaugh (Glover), who’s unexpectedly paired with wild narcotics detective Martin Riggs (Gibson), who has suicidal tendencies.
The franchise was revived with a “Lethal Weapon” TV series starring Damon Wayans and Clayne Crawford which premiered on FOX in 2016. The show was canceled in 2019 after Wayans decided to quit following the end of season 3 production in December 2018.

'AGT': Nick Cannon Supports Gabrielle Union Amid Terry Crews Debacle

    WENN/FayesVision

Current host Terry Crews previously insisted that he would never stand up for Gabrielle, who was reportedly fired because she raised concerns about racism and toxic culture on the show.
    Jan 30, 2020
AceShowbiz – Nick Cannon is weighing on the controversy surrounding Gabrielle Union’s firing from “America’s Got Talent”. In a new interview with VLADTV, Nick, who previously served as a host on the NBC show, shows that he was sticking by Gabrielle’s side.
“It was some eye-opening events that occurred that really shed light on some cultural insensitivities — ultimately, when it comes to women, when it comes to how the show is produced,” Nick said on January 28.
He continued, “I believe, as a producer — I was over at ‘AGT’ for a damn near decade — you kinda see these things as a giant machine, but if you really take the time to step back, you see some things that are truly not fair… It’’s an institutional issue.”
Nick later addressed Gabrielle and current host Terry Crews’ debacle after the latter insisted that he would never stand up for Gabrielle, who was reportedly fired because she raised concerns about racism and toxic culture on the show, because he never got such experience while working on “America’s Got Talent”. “I love Terry Crews, but it gets to that place… again it’s an institutional thing, so I’m not blaming him,” Nick said of the situation.
“We get excited about the occupation, we get excited to work for the man and we gon’ defend the man cause he gave me a job,” Nick went on adding. “It don’t matter what you saw because I stood firmly by him when my former agent accosted him… Especially when it comes to our queens, when it comes to Gabby, I don’t care. Whatever she said, if it happened, I’m rocking with you.”
    [embedded content]
Terry previously said on “3rd Hour of Today”, “First of all I can’t speak for sexism because I’m not a woman, but I can speak on behalf on any racism comments,” he said. “That was never my experience on ‘America’s Got Talent’, in fact, it was the most diverse place I have ever been in my 20 years of entertainment. The Top 10 acts were asian, women, older, younger, black, white, it was everything in the gamut.”
He continued, “When you look at what the allegations were about, it was given by an unnamed source. My thing is – it’s funny because I believe you should listen to women, you should always believe women so I asked my wife what I should do. She was like, ‘first of all, if it’s coming from an unnamed source – because Gabrielle Union has not made any statement to this day about any of these allegations publicly – …if she hasn’t made a statement, why would you?’ ”
In response, Gabrielle fired back on Twitter, saying that there was an investigation going on regarding the issues and she waited for it to be completed before speaking out. She wrote, “Truth telling, wanting change & having MULTIPLE witnesses who bravely came forward to let EVERYONE know I didn’t lie or exaggerate, really exposes those who enthusiastically will throw you under the bus, forgetting quickly who stepped up 4 THEIR truth.”
“Can someone please ask abt what happens to all that diversity folks are talking about BEHIND THE SCENES. Like, legit… where the hell is all that diversity in the production though homie? In the decision making ranks who control the fate of the diversity in front of the camera?” the wife of Dwyane Wade added.

David Schwimmer Clarifies Black 'Friends' Comments: 'I Meant No Disrespect' to 'Living Single'

    WENN/FayesVision

The Ross Geller depicter was previously dragged after seemingly forgetting the existence of ‘Living Single’ which inspired ‘Friends’ by suggesting a reboot of ‘Friends’ with an all-black cast.
    Jan 30, 2020
AceShowbiz – David Schwimmer has broken his silence after being slammed online over his recent remarks over wanting to have an ‘all-black’ and ‘all-asian’ version of “Friends”, seemingly forgetting the existence of “Living Single” which inspired “Friends”. One of the criticism came directly from “Living Single” alum Erika Alexander. And now, David attempts to explain himself to Erika in a statement.
“Hi Erika. As you know, I was asked recently in an interview for ‘The Guardian’ how I felt (for the thousandth time) about a reboot of ‘Friends’ immediately following a conversation about diversity on the show, and so offered up other possibilities for a reimagining of the show today,” David, who played Ross Geller in Friends, wrote in a reply to Erika’s tweet on Wednesday, January 29. “I didn’t mean to imply ‘Living Single’ hadn’t existed or indeed hadn’t come before ‘Friends’, which I knew it had.”
“Please remember in an interview quotes are often pieced together and taken out of context, and then these quotes are repurposed in other articles by other people who are trying to be provocative,” continued, adding that he was “a fan of ‘Living Single’, and was not implying ‘Friends’ was the first of its kind.”
David admitted that he wasn’t aware of the speculations that Warner Brothers and NBC, “encouraged by the success of Living Single, gave the Friends pilot a green light.” He said, “I honestly don’t know, but seems likely! If that’s the case, we are all indebted to Living Single for paving the way.”
David went on to say, “In any event, if my quote was taken out of context, it’s hardly in my control. I assure you I meant no disrespect.”
The statement arrives after Erika responded to David’s interview with The Guardian. “Hey @DavidSchwimmer @FriendsTV – r u seriously telling me you’ve never heard of #LivingSingle? We invented the template! Yr welcome bro. ;),” she wrote on Twitter.
David previously suggested during the interview a reboot of “Friends” with an “all-black” or an “all-asian” casts. “But I was well aware of the lack of diversity and I campaigned for years to have Ross date women of color. One of the first girlfriends I had on the show was an Asian American woman, and later I dated African American women. That was a very conscious push on my part,” he told the site.
