    WENN/Avalon

The NBA superstar who perished in a helicopter crash will reportedly be remembered in a special tribute at the upcoming 92nd annual Academy Awards ceremony in February.
    Jan 30, 2020
AceShowbiz – Late basketball star Kobe Bryant will reportedly be the subject of a special tribute at the 2020 Oscars in February.
The basketball player, 41, was killed in a helicopter crash in California on Sunday, January 26, 2020, alongside eight other passengers, including his 13-year-old daughter, Gianna.
Sources told The Hollywood Reporter the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences is planning to acknowledge the death of the NBA (National Basketball Association) legend at the awards show on February 9, highlighting his affiliations with the organisation.
In addition to his sporting achievements, Kobe won the Best Animated Short Oscar in 2018 for his five-minute autobiographical short film, “Dear Basketball”. The Los Angeles Lakers star wrote, executive produced and lent his voice to the project
After his death, the Academy paid tribute to Bryant in a touching Instagram post, writing, “They doubted a kid could make it in the NBA and he proved them wrong. They doubted he could win a championship and he proved them wrong. They doubted he could make movies and he won an Oscar.”
“Like all great artists, Kobe Bryant proved the doubters wrong. Rest in peace.”
Other organisations also paid tribute to Kobe – the NBA has postponed the first Los Angeles Lakers game following his death, while he was the subject of several tributes at the Grammys, which took place on Sunday evening.

Interview: Actor Kaidyn Hinds on ‘The Jury’

Following a successful run at Brindley Theatre, Runcorn, new musical The Jury is heading to London, opening at Upstairs at the Gatehouse on 4 February. The show follows twelve strangers on a jury in a case that will change them forever.
During a short break in rehearsals, Everything Theatre caught up with actor Kaidyn Hinds to find out about the show, the importance of the trans community being better represented on stage, and whether his singing voice is ready for opening night.
What can we expect from The Jury?
Well, to some degree The Jury does what it says on the tin: it’s dark, it’s intense and very dramatic. It follows the twelve jurors and the case but really it’s about those beautiful human moments. These people who have been thrown together in a completely unexpected situation and come through it have impacted each other’s lives as well as their verdicts. There’s humour, there’s drama, there are gorgeous vocals!
You play Harry Turner, a trans man: what can you tell us about him?
Coming into jury service, Harry has his own past to deal with. The case challenges many of the jurors’ attitudes to gender, and as it plays into a lot of gender stereotypes this hits him pretty hard. It can be difficult to navigate your way through a bunch of strangers, particularly as a trans person; it actually takes quite a lot for Harry to stand up and have his say.
The show has a very dark feel to it: do you think staging it as a musical could affect the message the show aims to portray?
I think that it being a musical helps to empower the message because it’s so much more heightened! It’s an extremely conversational piece, with every note and phrase written as an extension of spoken word and speech patterns. In many ways The Jury doesn’t fit the musical theatre format; it’s more of a hybrid between a play and an opera. There are sections that are sung, some that are semi-sung and parts where actually the rhythm and emotion are more important than what notes we’re singing anyway. The music helps to intensify the entire story by giving the audience an insight into each of the character’s internal worlds. Musically it’s a really interesting piece, but I think that people who don’t like musicals will thoroughly enjoy The Jury!
How much input did you have into your character?
Our composer, Ashley Walsh, was specifically looking for trans actors for the part when I got in touch with him. Ashley was very open about his level of knowledge and that he wanted to write a completely authentic trans character. I was able to feedback on Harry’s song and storyline and to give some background as to why he would or wouldn’t say certain things. I know that there were various other trans individuals involved in working on the material as well, which is great as we all have different experiences of being trans and therefore each of us was able to spot something different!
And how important do you feel it is to have more trans characters, and of course actors, appearing in theatre? Do you feel it is vital that a trans character is played by a trans actor?
I absolutely think that it’s vital to cast trans actors in trans roles. No matter where your character is at in their transition, there WILL be a trans actor suitable for the part. There are plenty of trans and non-binary actors out there, and casting them makes a huge difference. In this day and age there’s no longer any excuse for not making that extra bit of effort to find the right person; something as simple as a tweet or a Facebook post is all it takes! If it seems like the casting pool is too small, then expand it. We need to be doing more to nurture trans talent, and get trans creatives into training and onto projects.
Have you sung on stage before, or is this your debut in a musical? Is it a genre you plan to explore further in your career?
I’ve sung in many musicals, but this is my first professional job! I’ve been a musical theatre lover forever and fully intend to train in MT, though navigating my singing voice through hormone therapy has been interesting over the last few years. I’ll always remember playing Tobias in Sweeney Todd at the Minack Theatre, where I was a high tenor at the audition but by the time we got to the Minack I was wading into baritone range…
Could you see yourself working further on this show? And do you know if there are any future plans for it?
I can absolutely see myself being involved with The Jury in the future, and exploring both Harry and the show a bit further. I know that there have been talks of an off-West End transfer and potentially a tour in the pipeline. Whatever happens, I’m very excited to see what the future holds for the production!
Finally, what do you hope audiences may take away from seeing the show?
I would hope that audiences go away talking about it! If I had to choose three things, I would say: don’t take things at face value, listen to each other, and appreciate strangers. I would like our audiences to gain a different perspective on how they treat those around them, and what they really know about people. There may be a dramatic court case driving the plot, but really the beauty in this piece is about the relationship of the twelve jurors.

The Jury is on from 4th to 16th February, Upstairs At The Gatehouse. Tickets can be purchased online at https://www.upstairsatthegatehouse.com/the-jury More

Eli Roth Teases 'Big, Fun, Scary Event for Gamers' With New Project 'Clownpocalypse'

    WENN/Nicky Nelson

The film director is partnering up with 3BlackDot for the upcoming project, which will also feature a short-form web series and merchandise, and has recruited Philip Gelatt to pen the screenplay.
    Jan 29, 2020
AceShowbiz – Actor and horror movie maestro Eli Roth is developing a new film and video game franchise about terrifying clowns.
He has partnered with bosses at production house 3BlackDot for the horror project “Clownpocalypse”, which will also feature a short-form web series and merchandise.
Sources tell Deadline Roth has recruited Philip Gelatt to pen the screenplay and he’s currently seeking a director to oversee the film that will launch the franchise.
“I’ve had an amazing time collaborating with the incredible team at 3BlackDot,” Eli tells the outlet. “From concept to art to the game play, every step of the way, no idea has been too crazy, and they’ve executed it at the highest level.”
“For years I’ve had people tell me, ‘You can’t do that in a game, it’s too insane’, and I finally found partners who said, ‘Let’s take this a step further’. It feels like we’re making a game, movie and live experience with no parental supervision or studio to tell us to tone it down, and that’s the only way to create something spectacular and memorable.
“This will be a big, fun, scary event for gamers, movie fans, and people who love live events. The ‘Clownpocalypse’ is coming. Get ready.”

David Schwimmer Roasted Over Comments of 'All-Black' Version of 'Friends': Heard of 'Living Single'?

    WENN/Warner Bros. Television/Instar

The Ross Geller depictor’s interview sparks conversations on social media and it doesn’t take long before ‘Living Single’ alum Erika Alexander weighs in on the matter in one of her tweets.
    Jan 29, 2020
AceShowbiz – David Schwimmer faces heat over his recent comments about proposing an all-black version of his popular sitcom “Friends”. In a new interview with The Guardian, the actor, who portrayed Ross Geller on the show, shared that he wished for diversity by creating an all-black or all-asian version of “Friends”, but he was met with criticism because he missed one thing.
“I feel that a lot of the problem today in so many areas is that so little is taken in context. You have to look at it from the point of view of what the show was trying to do at the time,” the 53-year-old actor explained. “I’m the first person to say that maybe something was inappropriate or insensitive, but I feel like my barometer was pretty good at that time. I was already really attuned to social issues and issues of equality.”
“Maybe there should be an all-black Friends or an all-Asian Friends,” he said during the interview when asked about the criticism about the show’s all-white cast. “But I was well aware of the lack of diversity and I campaigned for years to have Ross date women of color. One of the first girlfriends I had on the show was an Asian American woman, and later I dated African American women. That was a very conscious push on my part.”
David might have meant well with the suggestion, but his remarks only caused people to roast him because he forgot the existence of “Living Single”. The show, which many dubbed as the “all-black ‘Friends’ “, aired in 1993, a year before the NBC sitcom premiered.
His interview sparked conversations on Twitter and “Living Single” alum Erika Alexander weighed in on the matter. She wrote on Twitter, “Hey @DavidSchwimmer @FriendsTV – r u seriously telling me you’ve never heard of #LivingSingle? We invented the template! Yr welcome bro. 😉 David Schwimmer 2 The Guardian: ‘Maybe there should be an all-black Friends or an all-Asian Friends’.”
During her appearance on “The Breakfast Club”, she previously revealed that the name for “Friends” was taken from the development stage of the show. “It was. The original name for ‘Living Single’ was ‘My Girls; but it didn’t test well so they came up with some other names. ‘Living Single’ and ‘Friends’ were some of the names presented. Obviously, they chose one and the other went to another show, also produced by Warner Bros.”
Fans also quickly chimed in as one said, “David Schwimmer clearly doesn’t know that the ‘all-black’ reboot of Friends that he wants was already done and was called Living Single…which btw inspired Friends.” Another one added, “Apparently, David Schwimmer has no idea he was on a white reboot of ‘Living Single’.”

Russell Simmons Documentary Receives Two Standing Ovations at Sundance Film Festival

    WENN/FayesVision

‘On the Record’, which was heavily criticized prior to its debut, focuses on Drew Dixon, one of the women who has accused the Def Jam Recordings co-founder of sexual misconduct.
    Jan 29, 2020
AceShowbiz – The controversial documentary movie about the sexual-misconduct allegations against music mogul Russell Simmons was met with standing ovations when it debuted at the Sundance Film Festival over the weekend (January 25-26).
The Apple TV+ programme, “On the Record”, centres on Drew Dixon – one of the women who has accused the Def Jam Recordings co-founder of sexual misconduct.
But while the project was heavily criticised prior to its debut, the film received two standing ovations when it played at Sundance, proving itself to be a hit with audiences, reported the New York Post’s gossip column Page Six.
Ahead of its release, Simmons pleaded with media mogul Oprah Winfrey to step away from the project, insisting, “I have never been violent or forced myself on anyone.”
The star latter announced she was departing the film in early January (2020), revealing the record executive had tried to contact her “multiple times” about her involvement, and had “attempted to pressure” her into distancing herself from the forthcoming release.
However, she is adamant Simmons’ efforts – including a public plea on Instagram – did not influence her decision to withdraw as a producer.
Simmons was first the subject of rape allegations from Dixon in 2017, when she accused the hip-hop pioneer of forcing himself on her in his apartment back in 1995. Simmons has denied all claims of non-consensual sex.

First 'Fast and Furious 9' Teaser Trailer Shows Dom's Domesticated Life

    [embedded content]

Despite the seemingly peaceful life of Vin Diesel’s character with Michelle Rodriguez’s Letty and his son, the sneak-peek video hints at imminent danger that threatens his family.
    Jan 29, 2020
AceShowbiz – Universal Pictures has debuted the first teaser trailer for “Fast and Furious 9”, more than two years after the eighth installment hit theaters. First released via Vin Diesel’s Facebook page, the almost-one-minute-video focuses on the new life of Dominic Toretto (Diesel) as a domesticated father.
The professional street racer has now retired and settled down with his wife Letty (Michelle Rodriguez) and his son Brian, who is named after Paul Walker’s character Brian O’Conner, at a farmhouse. The little boy appears to share the same interest with his father as he helps Dom fixing a tractor.
Narrating the video, Dom talks about how his life has changed. “Things change. Now that I’m a father, I can’t live my life a quarter mile at a time anymore,” he says. “I’ll always be in your heart,” he tells his son while putting him to bed.
But that’s about to change as the video hints at imminent danger that threatens his family when Letty gives Brian her necklace, which she got from Dom, as protection from a mysterious enemy. Dom, for some reasons, seems worried as he stares at the necklace in the next shot.
Official synopsis for the movie has not been unveiled yet, but more details can be expected in the coming days as the full trailer is scheduled to be released on Friday, January 31.
Jordana Brewster, Tyrese Gibson, Ludacris, Nathalie Emmanuel and Helen Mirren are set to reprise their respective roles, with Charlize Theron returning to villainize the movie. Michael Rooker, John Cena, Finn Cole, Anna Sawai, Vinnie Bennett, Ozuna and Cardi B are added to the cast as new characters, while Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson and Jason Statham are not expected to return after starring in their own spin-off “Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw”.

Justin Lin still serves behind the lens with the script written by Daniel Casey. The movie is due out in the United States on May 22.

Claire Danes: I Didn't Want the Level of Fame 'Titanic' Brought Leonardo DiCaprio

    WENN/Rob Rich

During a sit down with Dax Shepard on his ‘Armchair Expert’ podcast, the ‘Homeland’ star claims to having ‘zero regret’ in turning down the female lead role for the Oscar-winning blockbuster.
    Jan 29, 2020
AceShowbiz – Claire Danes has “zero” regrets about turning down “Titanic”, insisting she had no interest in the level of fame the film brought Leonardo DiCaprio.
The “Homeland” actress reveals she bowed out of consideration for the Oscar-winning blockbuster, letting the lead role ultimately go to Kate Winslet back in 1996, largely because the part felt all too familiar. The actress had just wrapped Baz Luhrmann’s “Romeo + Juliet” with DiCaprio, and was looking for a different type of venture.
“I had just made this romantic epic with Leo in Mexico City, which is where they were going to shoot ‘Titanic’!” she said during a sit down with Dax Shepard’s Armchair Expert podcast. “And I just didn’t have it in me!”
The 40-year-old recalls DiCaprio himself wrestling with the decision to take on the James Cameron epic, recounting a conversation they had outside their mutual manager’s office.
“And he just looked up at me and said, ‘I’m doing it! I’m doing it!’ ” she said. “And I could see he wasn’t sure. But he was like, ‘F**k it, I gotta do this thing.’ ”
Danes added that she could not see herself grappling with the global attention the actor received following the film’s release.
“And I looked down at him, and I was like, ‘I totally understand why you’re doing that. And I’m not ready for that.’ And I think I really wasn’t ready for it. And I remember after that movie came out… and he just went into another stratosphere.”
She noted she has “zero regret” after noticing a swift change in how people treat her former co-star.
“I think I may have sensed that I was courting that (level of fame) or I was proximate to that… and I just couldn’t do it. I didn’t want it. I was just really clear about it. I wasn’t conflicted,” she insisted.

As for whether or not anything romantic happened between the pair while they were filming the classic Shakespearean love story, she believes off-screen love was not written in the stars for them.

“That was just never going to happen,” she explained, while admitting there was a “crushy” vibe between the two. “I didn’t know how to go about that… we’re really different people.”
