H.E.R. to Follow Passion for Acting After Winning Another Grammy

    Instagram

The ‘I Can’t Breathe’ singer has made her movie debut in Jennifer Garner’s ‘Yes Day’, and earns Oscar nomination for ‘Fight For You’ from ‘Judas and the Black Messiah’ soundtrack.

    Mar 16, 2021
AceShowbiz – Grammy-winning singer H.E.R. is ready to “go full throttle” with her acting career after making her movie debut in Jennifer Garner’s new family comedy “Yes Day”. The star, who picked up the Best Song Grammy on Sunday, March 14 for “I Can’t Breathe”, is keen to take a step back from the recording studio to ramp up her acting credentials.
“I’ve been so focused on making music but I think it’s time now for me to go full throttle with acting,” H.E.R. told Entertainment Weekly. “I’m working on that right now, following my passion for acting.”
In her film debut, H.E.R. had the opportunity to sing a cover of the Four Tops’ “Baby I Need Your Loving” in a music festival scene with Garner and her movie daughter Jenna Ortega, and she enjoyed working alongside the Hollywood veteran.
“[Garner] was so sweet and so much fun,” the R&B artist shared. “We got to improvise a little bit. It really was just such a fun environment. She told me she loves my music, which is really cool. Plus, my band got to be a part of it with me, which was so dope. It was such a surreal experience for me.”
In addition to “Yes Day”, H.E.R. has been a part of the success of “Judas and the Black Messiah”, as her song “Fight for You” features on the historical film’s soundtrack, and earned her an Oscar nomination for Best Original Song on Monday.

Reacting to the news on Twitter, she wrote, “WOKE UP TO AN OSCAR NOMINATION!!!! WOW!!!!!!!!!!!! GOD IS SO GOOD!!!!!!!!!!!!”

H.E.R. reacted to her Oscar nomination for Best Original Song.
And, speaking to EW prior to the nominations announcement, she said of the movie, which revolves around the betrayal and death of Black Panther Party chairman Fred Hampton, “Judas and the Black Messiah was such an important story because it’s so important to black history.”
“I was really honored to be a part of it and I had a lot of fun making the song because I was able to tap into that late ’60s and early ’70s vibe. I’m a soul baby, it’s my favorite genre of music.”
She added, “Being able to do something really musical for it and to be able to talk about what was happening then and connect it to what’s been happening now with social injustice, was cool for me – bringing those two worlds together.”
“At the end of the day, we’re still fighting for a lot of the same things we were fighting for then. That’s what I wanted to bring out in the song. It’s very different from what I did for ‘Yes Day’.”

'The Bachelor' Finale Recap: Find Out Matt James' Final Decision

    ABC

One of the remaining ladies, Rachael and Michelle, is sent home while crying after the leading man of the current season of the ABC show admits to her that he doesn’t share the same feelings with her.

    Mar 16, 2021
AceShowbiz – The finale of Matt James’ “The Bachelor” season is finally here! Airing on Monday, March 15, the episode saw Matt making a final decision between the remaining ladies, Rachael and Michelle. He first brought Michelle to meet his mom, Patty James, and brother, John James.
During the reunion, Michelle opened up about her last relationship which she described “unhealthy.” John told Michelle that Matt seemed to be “in a good place” with her, while Patty loved that Michelle was sharing her feelings about Matt. She eventually gave Michelle a stamp of approval, telling Matt that Michelle “couldn’t have been sweeter and easier to be around.”
Later, it was time for Rachael to meet Matt’s family. John noticed the strong connection between Matt and Rachael right away, while Patty loved how confident the pair in being themselves around each other. Rachael tried to convince Patty that she was ready to get engaged to Matt. The two got emotional when talking about Rachael’s potential future with Matt.
Patty thought both Rachael and Michelle were “amazing.” However, she wanted her son to be careful when it comes to saying the word “love.” That made Matt start to doubt whether or not he was ready for an engagement.
Later, Matt and Michelle went to have their final date. While Michelle was certain that she wanted a future with Matt, the latter was still unsure. He was unable to shake off his doubts and he decided to end his relationship during the night portion of the date.

      See also…

“I’m sitting there last night thinking about these next steps and I’m just like…having doubts. I shouldn’t be having doubts about that. We’re a day or two away,” he told Michelle. “This is the first time I’ve felt anything outside of wanting to be with you forever and having any doubt in my mind at this point, for me, is just scary. I’ve been pushing through that feeling today and trying to get there because of how I feel about you and what I know it could look like with you. I think the easy thing for me to do is tell you what you want to hear.”
Michelle started crying before she asked, “I just want clarity on what this actually is or how you’re actually feeling. Am I supposed to fight for you? Tell me where you’re at, actually.” To that, Matt responded, “I don’t think I can get there with you.”
Rachael was supposed to have a final date with Matt, but he canceled at the last minute because he “needs some time.” Matt later was seen meeting Neil Lane to check out engagement rings. He went with a pear-shaped engagement ring. The next day, Matt sent an apology note to Rachael. He also invited Rachael to the final rose ceremony.
“Everything I came here looking for, I found in you,” Matt told Rachael in the final rose ceremony. “It’s scary to think about because I want to be everything to you. I want to be everything for you that my dad wasn’t to my mom. The easy thing for me to do would be to brush those feelings and emotions off and make you happy by proposing to you today. I couldn’t live with myself if I put you through what my mom went through. I’ve seen what rushing into a proposal or marriage can do in my family and it’s ugly. It’s not something I want for us. That’s why I can’t propose to you today.”
However, Matt quickly clarified, “That doesn’t mean I want to lose you. When I think about the life I want to live, I think about living that life with you. I want to leave here with you. The truth is that I love you. I want to make sure my love is enough for you.” Rachael was happy enough with that so she accepted his final rose.

Zack Snyder in 'Place of Desperation' When Quitting 'Justice League'

    WENN

The DC superhero filmmaker opens up about his abrupt departure from the star-studded comic book movie back in 2017, claiming he was so desperate that he didn’t care if his decision would end his career.

    Mar 16, 2021
AceShowbiz – Zack Snyder feared walking away from “Justice League” would do long-term damage to his career – but ultimately he “didn’t care.”
The 55-year-old filmmaker quit the superhero movie during post-production work on the project after his daughter Autumn committed suicide and, although Zack knew the move could’ve damaged his career, he simply “didn’t care” at the time.
He shared, “I was in such a place of desperation, I didn’t care. You know what? Good riddance to Justice League. I was like, ‘Guys, really? You’re going to give me a hard time? Let’s go. I’ll fight you right now.’ ”
“I was not in the mood for that kind of thing. I felt like we had done a great job, and the movie was done, even the two-hour-and-20-minute version that the studio had knocked me down to.”

      See also…

Zack knows his family “needed” him at the time, and he insisted it was entirely his decision to walk away from the film.
Asked if he left “Justice League” of his own volition, he told the New York Times newspaper, “Absolutely. The decision to leave was 100 per cent mine.”
“I knew the fight that I was in for with them. And my family needed me, and I needed them. I was in a struggle at home, and then to go to my place of work and be in a second struggle there seemed like an outrageous thing to do to myself and my loved ones.”
Zack is set to release a director’s cut of his Justice League movie on HBO Max, and he explained how the idea came about.
He shared, “Almost every movie I’ve ever made has a director’s cut. When I said, OK, I’m done, I (told) one of the editors I worked with: put it together as best you can, and give it to me.”

Watch: Tiffany Haddish Bursting Into Tears on TV Set as She Learns She Won Grammy

    Instagram

The ‘Kids Say the Darndest Things’ host was overwhelmed with emotions as she’s stunned when producers told her through her earpiece about her historic Grammy win.

    Mar 16, 2021
AceShowbiz – Tiffany Haddish fought back tears on the set of her TV show “Kids Say the Darndest Things” after learning she had won her first Grammy Award in the middle of a taping.
The “Girls Trip” star landed the Best Comedy Album for her “Black Mitzvah” stand-up special on Netflix, but she was unable to attend the Los Angeles prizegiving on Sunday (14Mar21) as she was already booked to take on hosting duties for her TV comedy series.
However, producers on “Kids Say the Darndest Things” broke the news of Tiffany’s historic win to the comedienne as she was discussing her two career nominations with a pair of young guests, and she was clearly caught by surprise.
Her reaction was captured on camera and Tiffany has since shared the footage on Instagram.
In the clip, she says, “For me, I’m just happy with being nominated, personally.”
The producer can then be heard telling Tiffany to repeat after him through an earpiece, saying, “I’ve been nominated a couple of times for some things…, but I just won a Grammy.”
She began to recite the remarks, until she realised what he had said, “I just what? I just won a Grammy? Are you serious?”
“I’m not lying, I’m telling you the truth…,” her colleague insisted. “Tell them all you just won a Grammy. Congratulations…!”
Brushing away tears, an emotional Tiffany exclaimed, “I really won?”

      See also…

She then turned to her guests, both girls, and explained, “You know a black woman hasn’t won in that category since 1986? A black woman hasn’t won for Best Comedy Album since Whoopi Goldberg.”
Tiffany then shared a few encouraging words of wisdom with the kids as she reflected on her own journey to stardom.
“Can I tell you why I’m crying?” she began. “It’s a lot of bumpy roads that you cross, right, and it’s a lot of times you feel like, ‘Am I doing the right thing? Is this good enough? Am I good enough? Am I strong enough to do this job?’ ”
“And then you just have to believe in yourself and as much as you can, and against all odds, you just say, ‘You know what? I’mma just put my best foot forward, and I’m gonna give the world the best that I got.’ Anything is possible (sic).”

Alongside the Instagram video, Tiffany wrote, “This is How I found out I Won a Grammy! I was Working today for @kidssaythedarndestthings…”
“The Producers decided to tell me I WON a Grammy while I was interviewing these two young ladies Lauren and Ava, that want to someday be president of the United States of America.”
“I was flooded with a such a (sense) of accomplishment and relief. I kinda didn’t know what to say. I just wanted to cry but I knew it would have confused the babies. So I decided to use that moment to teach and share my feelings (sic).”
“Thank you @recordingacademy for the honor,” she concluded. “Thank you to everyone that made #blackmitzvah happen (sic)…”

Riz Ahmed Feels Blessed to Be First Muslim Nominated for Best Actor at 2021 Oscars

    WENN

The ‘Sound of Metal’ actor is overjoyed after he was announced as one of the contenders for the prestigious Best Actor title at the upcoming 93rd annual Academy Awards.

    Mar 16, 2021
AceShowbiz – British star Riz Ahmed has made Oscars history as the first Muslim and first person of Pakistani descent to be recognised in the Best Actor category for his role in “Sound of Metal”.
The first-time nominee is humbled by the honour, and is proud to represent people of colour on Hollywood’s big night.
Ahmed, who hails from Wembley, just outside of London, tells Deadline, “If there’s a way in which people can find themselves in this moment, and can feel inspired and connected on a deeper level, I’m all for it.”
“Whether they see me as the first British Pakistani, or the first guy from Wembley, you know, there’s so many ways to view it. But as long as it feels like an opportunity for more people than ever before to really connect and feel included in this moment, that’s a blessing.”
He is part of the most diverse group of acting nominees to ever be celebrated by officials at the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, with nine actors of colour in the running for top prizes this year (21), and Ahmed is thrilled to see so many different kinds of stories being accepted into mainstream culture and awarded with nods.
“It’s why we do it, to stretch our hearts and stretch our minds, and in the process stretch culture,” he reflected of the diverse Oscars field.

      See also…

“We should stretch culture so that it’s big enough and wide enough and expansive enough so that there’s space for all of us to find ourselves in it, to feel that we belong and that we’re included, and that we matter.”
“These changes aren’t just something that’s good politically or socially. It’s something which allows stories and storytelling to get back to its original intention, which is to embrace all of us.”
And Ahmed is particularly pleased to be nominated for filmmaker Darius Marder’s “Sound of Metal”, in which he plays a drummer who has to adjust to a new way of life after losing his hearing.
“It feels like a privilege to be part of this team,” he smiled. “It was a special project where everyone got together, there were no egos, and it was all about us pulling toward this larger vision.”
“We made the film unsure whether anyone would see it, really, so for us to come out with six nominations is just the most beautiful feeling. For Darius, who spent 13 years trying to get this film made; for (co-star and Best Supporting Actor nominee) Paul Raci, who spent 35 years sitting on this tremendous talent and perhaps not being given the platform to really express it; and for the entire team. I know it’s a cliche but it was truly a labour of love.”
In addition to Ahmed’s groundbreaking nomination, “Minari” star Steven Yeun became the first Asian-American ever to be shortlisted for Best Actor while his co-star Yuh-Jung Youn was hailed as the first Korean person to land an acting Oscar nod, and “Nomadland” filmmaker Chloe Zhao made further history as the first woman of colour to be recognised in the Best Director category.
The winners will be revealed when the 93rd Academy Awards take place in Los Angeles on 25 April.

    Feature: Young Carers Action Day

Last month we interviewed Matt Woodhead, author of Who Cares?, as well as Campaign Manager for the Who Cares Campaign. Matt’s passion for young carers had a profound effect on us at Everything Theatre so we wanted to do more for him and to support Young Carers Action Day. What follows is the joint work of Matt, LUNG theatre, Who Cares Campaign and some of the young carers supported by the organisations involved with the campaign.
And if you can, please do show your support by making a donation towards the Who Cares Campaign.

Today is Young Carers Action Day. At LUNG we are standing shoulder to shoulder with them.

My message to young carers is that you are not alone

In the middle of last year’s lockdown madness, there was a ray of sunshine at LUNG HQ. The loo roll shelves in the supermarket were bare and theatres were empty, but for us there was a glimmer of hope: Gitika Buttoo joined our team.
Every week for the last five months, Gitika has been spearheading LUNG’s Young Carer Creative Makers. In partnership with young carers services and their local theatres, Gitika has run online workshops with young carers in Salford, Kent, Cheshire West and North Wales. The mission? To train 30 teenagers up to be young leaders and radical artists.
There are an estimated 700,000 young carers in the UK who have been providing unpaid full time care to family members or a loved one during the Coronavirus lockdown. One in twelve young people experience being a young carer. That’s two in every class.
Today is Young Carers Action Day. This is an annual event, organised by Carers Trust, aimed at raising awareness for young carers and the incredible contribution they make to their families and local communities. To mark the occasion, the Young Carer Creative Makers are getting active and banging the drum for other teenagers like them across the country.
Tonight, these 30 young carers are doing a special performance for their family members, friends, teachers, councillors and decision makers. Ahead of the performance, we caught up with the group. Below is what they had to say, in their own words. On Young Carers Action Day 2021, this is what they want you to know:
A message from young carers for the arts…
‘Every single young carer needs a free creative space to express themselves and who they are. Although we have big responsibilities, it doesn’t mean we don’t have the potential to become artists, writers, authors. You name it, we can achieve it.’
‘Sometimes, just being a young person is a lot. We need to have a space and a place to breathe.’
A message from young carers for grown-ups…
‘We are not children, but we are not adults. We are kind of in a category in-between. I don’t think grown-ups understand how much our caring responsibilities affect our lives and how we’re different because of that.’
‘I have been bullied. When I told people in my class I am a young carer, they said “You can’t be a young carer, you are autistic.” They think I am saying it for attention. That’s why we need more support – or more awareness in schools, at least, so everyone can understand.’
‘Teachers need to acknowledge and not stereotype us as typical teenagers. If something has happened at home and we get told off for not concentrating in class it can be overwhelming. Just being acknowledged properly as a young carer in school could be such a powerful thing.’
‘I told my teachers several times that I was a young carer and it didn’t matter. They didn’t do anything. I asked for help but they didn’t do anything. This needs to change.’
‘Young carers don’t want to look weak. We want to look strong (not just for us, but for our family too). We may not want to express our emotions, but if adults can learn about young carers, they can help without us always having to ask for it.’
A message from young carers for other young carers…
‘If you are an aspiring artist, don’t let limited supplies limit you. With even only a pencil and paper you can produce the most amazing things.’
‘Make sure you look after your mental health. I sometimes bottle up my feelings and it can come out in lots of different ways. Take time and don’t put pressure on yourself. Everyone needs a distraction from what is going on around them sometimes. You need to put yourself first.’
‘You are not alone, there is support out there. Like, whether that is someone who you know or your friends or your family, there is always a support there. You’ve just got to ask.’
In the last five months since Gitika’s very first session, everyone at LUNG has been bowled over by the flair and tenacity of the Young Carer Creative Makers. As well as juggling home schooling and managing their caring responsibilities, all of them have flourished and grown as independent artists. And it’s only the beginning. A fire has been lit by Gitika and these 30 young carers.
As we emerge from the third lockdown, we need to rally around our young carers. The loo roll shelf may be replenished and theatres might be planning to open their doors, but we can’t return to the status quo. In the arts and across society, we need to be doing more.
This Young Carers Action Day, take these ten messages with you – not only for today, but for the rest of 2021 and beyond. Now isn’t the time to sit back. Now is the time to get up and do something. Now is the time to act.
Matt Woodhead is the Co-Artistic Director of LUNG and author of Who Cares.
Young Carers Creative Makers is a partnership between LUNG, WCD Young Carers, Imago Young Carers, Crossroads Together, Gaddum, The Lowry, Quarterhouse in Folkestone, Theatr Clwyd and Action Transport Theatre.

Chloe Zhao and Emerald Fennell Make History With 2021 Oscar Nominations

    WENN

The ‘Nomadland’ director and the ‘Promising Young Woman’ helmer are up for best director as the complete nominations list for the upcoming Academy Awards is announced.

    Mar 16, 2021
AceShowbiz – Chloe Zhao and Emerald Fennell will both compete for best director at the 2021 Academy Awards setting a new record for female auteurs in the category.
The nominations, announced on Monday (15Mar21) by actor-producer Priyanka Chopra Jonas and her husband, singer-songwriter-actor Nick Jonas saw both Zhao’s “Nomadland”, and British talent Fennell’s “Promising Young Woman” selected in the Best Picture category, as well as earning them nods for their direction, breaching a new barrier again for female directors, who have typically been overlooked.
It is the first time in the Academy Awards’ nearly almost 100-year history, more than one female director has been nominated in the best director category.
In total, only five women have been nominated in the best director category, with Kathryn Bigelow, who directed 2010 movie “The Hurt Locker”, the first and only female director to win in the category.
Both films garnered several nominations, with “Nomadland” collecting six including Best Actress for lead Frances McDormand, and Fennell’s “Promising Young Woman” earning a Best Actress nod for Carey Mulligan among its five nominations. While David Fincher helmed “Mank” is the Oscars most nominated movie with 11 nods.
Director Fincher will compete against Zhao, Fennell, Aaron Sorkin for “The Trial of the Chicago 7” – which garnered seven nods – Thomas Vinterberg for movie “Another Round”, and Lee Isaac Chung for “Minari”.
In the Best Actor category, Chadwick Boseman was given another posthumous nod for his role in “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom”, alongside his co-star Viola Davis who gets her fourth Oscar nomination, and her second nod for Best Actress.
Also competing for Best Actor is “Mank” leading man Gary Oldman, fellow British stars Anthony Hopkins for “The Father” and Riz Ahmed for “Sound of Metal”, and Steven Yeun for “Minari”.
The Best Actress category is rounded out by first-time nominees, singer Andra Day for “The United States vs. Billie Holiday” and former “The Crown” star Vanessa Kirby for “Pieces of a Woman”.
In a move that may cause some controversy, British star Daniel Kaluuya is nominated in the Best Supporting Actor group for his starring role in “Judas and the Black Messiah”, alongside his co-star LaKeith Stanfield. Also in the supporting actor group are; Sacha Baron Cohen for “The Trial of the Chicago 7”, Leslie Odom Jr. for “One Night in Miami…”, and Paul Raci for “Sound of Metal”.
Glenn Close receives her eighth Oscar nomination for her role in “Hillbilly Elegy”, and will compete against Cohen’s “Borat Subsequent Moviefilm” co-star Maria Bakalova, Olivia Colman for “The Father”, Amanda Seyfried for “Mank”, and “Minari” star Yuh-Jung Youn in the Best Supporting Actress category.
Elsewhere Disney’s “Soul” and “Onward” will battle it out for the Animated Movie category, which is rounded out by “Over the Moon”, “Shaun the Sheep Movie: Farmageddon”, and “Wolfwalkers”.
The Oscars will take place on Sunday, 25 April.

Sharon Osbourne Blames CBS for Heated Piers Morgan Discussion on 'The Talk'

    WENN/Avalon

Accusing the network for totally blindsiding her with the stern questioning over her Twitter defence, the wife of Ozzy Osbourne likens herself to ‘a lamb held out for slaughter.’

    Mar 15, 2021
AceShowbiz – Sharon Osbourne has compared herself to “a lamb held out for slaughter” after she was “totally blindsided” on her U.S. show “The Talk” by stern questions about her Twitter defence of controversial U.K. newsman Piers Morgan.
Morgan quit his TV gig as co-host of “Good Morning Britain” on Tuesday, March 9 following public uproar over his dismissal of Meghan Markle, Duchess of Sussex’s claims of suicidal thoughts in her revealing tell-all with Oprah Winfrey, but Sharon voiced her support for her old friend in a statement on Twitter.
“I am with you. I stand by you,” she wrote. “People forget that you’re paid for your opinion and that you’re just speaking your truth.”
Sharon was quizzed about her comments on daytime show “The Talk” the following day, insisting she didn’t “agree with what he said,” but was instead standing up for Morgan’s “freedom of speech”.
However, co-host Sheryl Underwood, who is black, took Sharon to task for supporting Morgan, who had also declared he didn’t believe anything the Duchess had said, including accusing members of the royal family of racism.
Sharon subsequently apologized to anyone who felt offended by her remarks, making it clear she doesn’t “condone racism, misogyny or bullying”, adding via Twitter, “I will always support freedom of speech, but now I see how I unintentionally didn’t make that clear distinction.”
Now Sharon is holding CBS network bosses responsible for putting her “The Talk” co-hosts up to the task of grilling her on air over the Morgan controversy.

      See also…

“I blame the network for it,” she told Variety. “I was blindsided, totally blindsided by the whole situation. In my 11 years [on ‘The Talk’], this was the first time I was not involved with the planning of the segment.”
Sharon admitted a producer had asked her shortly before Wednesday’s showtime if she could be questioned about Morgan during the taping, but she had no idea they had prepared a full script for Underwood to stick to.
“I get on there, I say my piece and Sheryl turns around straight-faced, looks at me and is reading from a card with questions,” she explained.
“I was just so hurt, caught off guard and stunned by what I was being asked and not prepared. I was honestly in shock. I felt like I was in front of a firing squad. I felt like a lamb held out for slaughter… They had me there for 20 minutes.”
Sharon ended up having to beg producers to “please change subjects” during a commercial break, and she is convinced the TV clash was all concocted by CBS chiefs.
“I’m a big girl. I’m a professional,” she said. “However CBS blindsided me. I don’t know why they did it to me. The showrunners told me it came from executives to do this to me.”
A representative for CBS has declined to respond to Sharon’s Variety comments, but on Friday, officials announced plans to conduct an “internal review” of the incident.
