The celebrity duo, who announced their separation this week after 13 years of marriage, were in the midst of major renovation work on their multi-million pound abode after returning to the UK.They purchased the £5million bare bones property, dubbed a “fixer-upper”, with the aim of crafting an LA-style home in Hampstead. In 2022, they secured planning permission to transform it into a mid-century modern-style residence.Barnet Council gave the go-ahead to “renovate, extend and upgrade” the five-bedroom property. Cat had been flaunting the progress on the 1950s property on her social media and once confessed to being “overwhelmed” by the project. She remarked: “I’m not going to lie, I got a bit of a shock today. Not much house, lots of air.”A planning application said a lot needed doing to the home(Image: Barnet Council docs / SWNS)In documents submitted as part of the application, the couple’s representatives had outlined the aspirations behind the project. They stated: “The present owners bought the derelict property in a run down state. And it has been unoccupied for a number of years.”The proposed design which retains the existing fabric as much as possible in contrast to planning applications submitted by previous owners who proposed demolition and re-build.”The application said the home was very dark inside(Image: Barnet Council docs / SWNS)Documents highlighted the many positive qualities of the existing dwelling that the owners wished to “build on and strengthen”.However, they noted: “There are other aspects of the existing house which need improving. It has been unoccupied for many years and is in a poor state of repair.”The roof and windows need replacing and upgrading thermally. The interior needs a wholesale refurbishment. The proposed plans would modernise the property(Image: Barnet Council docs / SWNS)”There is no direct access from the first floor living rooms to the garden and the terrace is rather constrained in size.”The bedrooms are currently quite small compared to the size of the house and do not get much light, they also have a low ceiling which makes them feel even more compromised.”The internal layout of the house and split-levels makes the house feels disjointed and awkward at times. It is very dark in the centre of the house on both floors.”The couple’s representatives stated: “The brief from the client is to improve the internal layout of the house, which is currently very fragmented and non-functional, through some internal alterations.”The property was located in Hampstead(Image: Barnet Council docs / SWNS)The plans also proposed an extension to the north facade to create an entrance hall and new work space, and to extend the west elevation by 1.5m to provide more terrace area on the first floor and larger bedrooms on the ground floor. The representatives further stated: “The owners are determined to create a home which improves the site’s function and form, creating a dwelling that is worthy of this unique location.”Materials were also utilised to “connect the clients to their previous home in LA and to places that have significant memories for them.”The pair tied the knot in Rome in 2012 and announced their separation this week.Article continues belowThey had forked out £4.9million for the property after they decided to stop residing in the US with their two lads.Want all the biggest Showbiz and TV news straight to your inbox?
