‘Eight iconic British TV shows we should bring back – from Golden Balls to Krypton Factor’

Our resident TV addict Tom Stichbury has taken a trip down memory lane to bring you the vintage hits (and misses) he’d like to see back on the box….Thomas Stichbury12:19, 18 Aug 2025Updated 12:26, 18 Aug 2025Golden Balls produced one of the most dramatic moments in British TV history(Image: Youtube)Fresh from quitting the Beeb, ex-Match of the Day host Gary Lineker has netted his next gig, presenting brand-new ITV game show The Box.The format features 10 yellow containers, each housing a celebrity participant who gets whisked away to mystery destinations before being unleashed to tackle whatever challenge lies beyond the door. But if you ask me, they just don’t make telly treats like they used to.Now I’ve been pondering the shows I’d save from the scrapheap and put back on our screens…Brush upNo one could possibly describe children’s fave Art Attack as paint by numbers. It even had a literal talking head… well, big-chinned bust. Our TV addict Tom Stichbury has had his sayArticle continues belowRunning from 1990 to 2007, host Neil Buchanan – who memorably debunked rumours he was graffiti artist Banksy – staged jaw-dropping large-scale illusions using everything from random items of clothing to vegetables.Maybe a revival with a still-knocking-about Buchanan is what’s needed to get the yoof of today off their bloody phones.Should Art Attack make a return?(Image: Getty Images)Nice to see you, to see you…Granted, Generation Game has been unsuccessfully rebooted a few times.Pitting teams of family members against one another, the classic series was originally hosted by the late, great Bruce Forsyth before Jim Davidson took over. Since then, Paul O’Grady, Graham Norton and, most recently, Mel and Sue have presented versions.Failure might seem inevitable, yet I refuse to sign a “do not resuscitate” order on this goldie oldie. It’s simple feel-good entertainment, with the underlying threat of some thrilling family rows.Bruce Forsyth and his assistant Anthea Redfern on the set of The Generation Game(Image: TV Times via Getty Images)Slam dunkHelmed by Chris Tarrant, blokes-only pageant Man O Man was the full package in more ways than one. But it failed to make a splash with critics, treading water from 1996 to ’99.Each week, 10 guys tried to woo the female audience through titillating tasks, from delivering their best pick-up line, to posing in tight trunks. The least impressive was shoved into a swimming pool.Top-notch trash telly, it beats watching scantily-clad wannabe influencers bonking on Love Island, or ex-Made in Chelsea toffs apparently searching for “love” on Celebs Go Dating.Chris Tarrant hosted Man O Man(Image: LWT)Look SharpRemember Funhouse? Perky Pat Sharp was the perfect fit for this kids’ staple, which first opened its doors in ‘89.Joined, rather randomly, by even perkier twin cheerleaders Melanie and Martina Grant, he oversaw proceedings as youngsters tackled a range of gunk-tastic challenges, before competing in a go-kart race and, finally, gaining entry to the titular funhouse.Bear with me, but I propose a primetime-slot adults-only spin-off, fronted – and this is a deal-breaker – by someone with a Sharp-inspired mullet. You can already picture Alison Hammond as a contestant tumbling down a giant slide into a ball pit. TV gold.Pat Sharp in the Funhouse(Image: Grab)Fresh pair of eyesYou might reasonably argue that Stars in Their Eyes returned to our screens in the guise of ITV’s Starstruck, which arrived in 2022.Presided over by Olly Murs, this sister show also featured regular folk doing spot-on impressions of their beloved artists. However, like most covers, it didn’t quite hit the same notes as the original, first hosted by Leslie Crowther, and then Matthew Kelly.Despite a razzle-dazzle judging line-up, including Shania Twain and Beverley Knight, the redo lacked a vital ingredient: a s*** ton of dry ice. Until bigwigs give the greenlight to the series proper, I’ll keep performing Cardi B and Megan Thee Stallion’s WAP in a very steamy shower.Stars In Their Eyes is due a revival(Image: Unknown)Balls upComic Jasper Carrott had the Midas touch when he signed up for ITV’s Golden Balls.Four players were dealt shiny orbs worth varying amounts of dough, from a tenner to £75k, with “killer” options which divided the total sum. At the end, the finalists had to decide, unbeknownst to each other, whether to “share” or “steal” the jackpot – genuinely nerve-shredding stuff. With The Traitors UK proving that the nation has an insatiable appetite for cloak-and-dagger shenanigans, this delectably deceptive teatime delight deserves a second roll.Jasper Carrott fronted Golden Balls(Image: Youtube)Top of the potsA former mainstay of the Saturday-night schedule, the BBC’s snooker-themed Big Break racked up the ratings between 1991 and ’02. Funnyman Jim Davidson shot it out the park with referee sidekick John Virgo, as members of the public joined forces with professionals to pocket prizes. Thanks to the bromance between a (pre-cancelled) Davidson and Virgo, the series appealed even to non-snooker fans like me. And I still don’t know how it’s different to pool. With darts-based Bullseye having already stepped up to the oche again with ex-cricketer Freddie Flintoff, it would be, ahem, cue-pid not to have another round.Jim Davidson and John Virgo in Big Break(Image: BBC)Axe factorUnsurprisingly, long-running British game show The Krypton Factor had plenty of stamina, lasting from 1977 to ’95. Legendary presenter Gordon Burns put contestants well and truly through the wringer, as they faced a string of mental and physical tests to determine who was the “Superperson” of the year.Lovely Ben Shephard went on to stage a short-lived revival in the noughties. And in the never-give-up spirit of the show, I remain convinced it hasn’t run its course. The Krypton Factor put contestants through a series of tasks(Image: ITV)Article continues belowWe all love acts of human endurance – and also, let’s face it, the potential for injury. In 1989, participant Judith Stafford broke her ankle mid-challenge and gamely carried on. What a gal. More

Jaws child star reveals staggering earnings years after dying in hit movie

Actor Jeffrey Voorhees played doomed youngster Alex Kintner, who gets brutally killed by the shark in Steven Spielberg’s Jaws, and he’s admitted “it pays to die”11:12, 18 Aug 2025Jeffrey Voorhees is still dining out on his role in Jaws(Image: Merrily Cassidy/Cape Cod Times / USA TODAY NETWORK via Imagn Images)Jaws star Jeffrey Voorhees is raking it in decades after the iconic film.He was just 12 year sold when he played Alex Kintner in Steven Spielberg’s legendary shark movie, which came out in 1975 and became the biggest box office hits ever. Jaws made a monstrous £350million and won three Oscars – and its iconic “Da dum, Da dum” theme tune is one of the most famous themes of all time.Unfortunately, young Alex doesn’t long in the film as he gets brutally killed by the killer shark while out at sea. But it’s proved rather profitable for the actor, who is still raking it in 50 years after the movie and gets paid every time it gets shown on TV.The star also does paid meet and greets and signings for fans of the classic film. He said: “It pays to die. I was a 12-year-old kid who was in the movie for like a minute, but there are some real Jaws fanatics out there. He played Alex Kintner in the iconic 1975 movie, who sadly gets killed by the deadly great white”One guy in England just bought 125 photos. I do signings. They fly me all over the world and pay me in cash at those things – around £10,000 a time.”Article continues below”There are Jaws tours and people pay double if I’m on them and next month I’m appearing at three Meet, Greet and Mingle Parties. I still get paid every time the film appears on TV.”Jaws won three Oscars and launched the career of director Steven Spielberg(Image: Internet Unknown)His brother will often see him get killed in the film and let him know he’s about go get another cheque. Jeffrey added: “My brother lives in Portugal and I’ll get texts from him going, ‘Good news, you just died on TV over here. You’ll get another cheque'”.Jeffrey does personalised videos for fans on Cameo for £25.99. He also went on to manage a seafood restaurant on the island of Martha’s Vineyard in Massachusetts, where Jaws was filmed.Jeffrey gets paid every time Jaws appears on TVDirector Steven Spielberg has said he “truly regrets” the decline of the shark population following the success of Jaws, his breakout film which launched his legendary career. He told BBC Radio 4’s Desert Island Discs he’s worried that sharks are “mad” at him for the “feeding frenzy of crazy sword fishermen that happened after 1975”.He said the decimation of the shark population as a result of the movie is something “I truly and to this day regret”. The film has been accused of misrepresenting great white sharks and leading to trophy hunting in the US.He has also admitted he though Jaws would be the last film he ever make. He said, in a video message at a National Geographic world premiere for Jaws @ 50: The Definitive Inside Story: “In most circumstances, summer in the Vineyard is a dream. But when you are over budget and over schedule and when I am over my head, that summer of 1974 was a bad dream before it ever became the dream of a lifetime.””It details how young and unprepared all of us were for the challenges of shooting in the Atlantic Ocean with a mechanical shark that was more temperamental than any movie star I have ever worked with since, and how in the wake of running over schedule and budget, I truly believed that Jaws would be the last movie I would ever be given to direct.”Article continues belowHave you joined Threads? Celebs who saved lives with acts of heroism – from Tom Cruise to Danny DeVito snake bite

Former Hear’Say star Myleene Klass helped save the day when a reveller got into difficulty at Brighton Pride recently. But she’s not the first celeb to do something heroicThomas Stichbury10:48, 18 Aug 2025Updated 10:48, 18 Aug 2025Myleene Klass recently helped save a man’s life at Brighton Pride(Image: INSTAGRAM)Ex-pop star and presenter Myleene Klass recently helped save a man’s life at Brighton Pride, while volunteering for St John’s Ambulance – no, it wasn’t just Hear’Say. However, she’s not the only star to hit the headlines for their real-life heroics.Donning my own makeshift cape, I decided it was time to celebrate celebrity acts of courage…Cruise controlBefore earning his action-man credentials, a baby-faced Tom Cruise came to the rescue on the set of cheesy 80s rom-com Cocktail.A nasty surprise was almost in store when, in a break between scenes, co-star Elisabeth Shue ran to the back of a helicopter, unaware that the tail rotor was still spinning. Cruise, aka barman Brian, was quick to act.According to a book written by Bill Bennett, the film’s aerial camera operator, he “lunged after her, but was only able to grab her legs, tackling her to the ground” and “truly saved her life.” We’ll drink to that!Tom Cruise stopped a helicopter disaster unfolding on set(Image: Corbis via Getty Images)Article continues belowMay the Ford be with youGiven his swashbuckling roles in Star Wars and Indiana Jones, it should come as no surprise that Harrison Ford isn’t a slouch in the save-the-day department. The acting legend has taken to the skies in his beloved chopper multiple times to help stranded folk. In 2000, Ford whizzed to the aid of a young hiker called Sarah, who’d fallen ill following a five-hour climb of the 11,106ft Table Mountain in Wyoming. How did she repay him? The then-20-year-old said she “barfed” in his whirlybird afterwards.A year later, he answered an SOS to find boy scout Cody, 13, who had gotten lost near Yellowstone National Park. Now, that’s what you call winging it.Harrison Ford has repeatedly rescued people in his chopper(Image: Getty Images)Sss-afe and soundNow this really is one for the film hiss-tory books. While shooting 1984 romp Romancing the Stone, Danny DeVito was far from rattled when co-star and chum Michael Douglas was bitten by a venomous snake. The diminutive actor recalled: “I always heard the best thing to do is suck the poison out right away, so I did. I grabbed his hand, and I’m spitting all over the place.“I say [to Michael], ‘Boy, it’s a good thing this didn’t bite you on the balls – you’d be a dead man.” Hope Devito got a boa-nus for his efforts…Danny DeVito sucked snake venom out of Michael Douglas(Image: Daniel Zuchnik/Variety via Getty Images)You won’t BelieveBuddies Cher and Meryl Steep were on an ice-cream run in New York City when they stumbled upon an in-progress assault.Revisiting the unnerving incident, Cher said: “We hear screaming. We come around the corner and this gigantic man is ripping the clothes off this girl.“Meryl starts screaming, I start screaming, and we run towards [him]… he ran through us, [then] we went up to the girl and all her clothes were torn… she looks at us and goes, ‘Oh, my God, I’ve been saved by Meryl Streep and Cher!’”Streep later added she went “completely nuts” at the culprit.Cher and Meryl Streep turned heroes(Image: (Image: Getty))Dark Knight in shining armourWell, cowl about this. Batman fave Michael Keaton stopped director friend Dennis Dugan from choking to death on a bit of lodged food. At no point did he think his pal was Joker-ing.“All of a sudden, I look at him and he’s really red in the face, and then he’s kind of getting a shade of blue that was concerning,” Keaton said.“He very calmly [pointed at his neck] and I remember seeing somewhere, or someone explaining what the Heimlich manoeuvre was. He noticed the chap struggling 400 yards offshore, dove in the waves, then pulled him to safety with the aid of a boogie board.Arnie said: “I asked him if he was in trouble, and he said he had cramps all over his body. ‘Princess Andre should’ve had best week of her life – but her parents ruined it’

COMMENT: Princess Andre has finally stepped out into the spotlight on her own, with the release of her solo show The Princess Diaries, but her warring parents overshadowed her10:31, 18 Aug 2025Jack joined Daily Star Online in 2015 after completing MA Magazine Journalism at Cardiff University. Originally on the overnight team, Jack soon joined the daytime team and worked through the ranks to eventually run the team as Showbiz & TV Editor. He has always had a huge interest in showbiz journalism, which he credits to his love of reality television. Jack has covered and interviewed a number of cast members from popular reality series including The Real Housewives, Below Deck and more. In recent years he has developed a keen love of K-Pop and has had the opportunity to review plenty of K-Pop concerts, as well as interview the groups. Princess Andre should’ve been riding high after the release of her solo show(Image: ITVX)It should’ve been the biggest week of Princess Andre’s life. At just 18 years old, she’d landed her own ITV reality show following her as she took her first footsteps into the spotlight without her famous parents, Katie Price and Peter Andre. Sadly, the former couple’s war of words soon overshadowed her and her exciting time.Last week, four-episode series The Princess Diaries dropped on ITVX. At the time, I wrote of how sorry I felt for mum Katie to not be included at all, while dad Peter was. Now, I’ve been left eating my words. In the days that followed, Katie continued to snatch headlines with new surgery and more barbed comments about Peter. In retaliation, Pete, who usually stays silent on anything to do with his ex-wife, released a statement, slamming her “lies”.Katie Price and Peter Andre are parents to Junior and Princess(Image: WireImage)Less than a week after the release of The Princess Diaries, the show had almost been completely forgotten about – and it can’t have been fun for poor Princess. The show itself is a great introduction to her, and both she and her older brother Junior come across incredibly well for people that have grown up with two very famous parents.Article continues belowBut while she should have been basking in her growing popularity, she was forced to address claims of a feud with her mum, which Katie has done little to dampen.”I love my mum and dad and that’s all that matters,” she told fans on Snapchat when asked about their very public feud.Princess Andre is trying to step out on her own(Image: princess_andre/Instagram)And I’m sure she does. But I wonder right now whether she likes them. We’ve all been teenagers. We’ve all had moments where our parents have done something to annoy us. But for most of us, it’s behind closed doors.Poor Princess has been stuck in the middle of her parents’ public jabs, putting on a brave face and smiling for fans on Instagram, where she is a successful influencer.Last week, I admitted I understood why Katie wasn’t in her show, but thought a brief cameo would’ve been nice. I even conceded, though, that a small two-minute appearance would probably take the spotlight away from Princess.Peter Andre spoke out to slam Katie Price’s ‘lies'(Image: Princess Andre/Instagram)Now, Katie’s proved me right. She’s taken the spotlight from Princess without even being on the show.Could she not have had one week of silence to give Princess the attention she deserved from her show?Katie’s public bashing of Peter is nothing new. Any chance she gets to do it, she does. But this time feels different.Peter usually keeps a dignified silence, so for him to speak out and reveal Princess and Andre had been living with him since 2018, with a court order enforcing it in 2019, for their own safety.”I have never made this public before, out of respect for my children,” he said in a statement. He went on to note that in 2011 and 2015, Katie was ordered to “pay substantial damages and legal costs, and to apologise, to me and my management” after she was found to have made a number of false claims.Katie Price has said she won’t be ‘gaslighted’ any more(Image: Getty Images)If we thought things were messy before, it sounds like it’s only going to get worse. He went on: “Unfortunately, there are many more lies and baseless accusations I have yet to address. Those will now be dealt with in the coming months.”Katie responded, saying she would “no longer be gaslighted and bullied”.She also apparently “doesn’t feel the need to bring up tit for tat comments”, which, yeah, that one confused me too, given she’s done countless podcasts bashing Pete and his management, The CAN Group. It’s all in her lawyers’ hands now, she says, so only time will tell how things turn out.But until Katie and Peter can at least publicly put aside their differences, or better yet just stop talking about each other full stop, neither Princess or Junior will be able to truly break away into the stars they could be.Article continues belowWant all the biggest Showbiz and TV news straight to your inbox? ‘Blackpink prove global star power in history-making Wembley Stadium concert’

REVIEW: K-Pop quartet Blackpink returned to London for two history-making shows at Wembley Stadium, after taking a break to pursue successful solo careers09:53, 18 Aug 2025Updated 09:54, 18 Aug 2025Jack joined Daily Star Online in 2015 after completing MA Magazine Journalism at Cardiff University. Blackpink returned to London, this time at Wembley Stadium(Image: YG Entertainment)There is no better feeling than screaming “Blackpink in your area!” surrounded by thousands of other fans. And despite only releasing one new song since their last London gig in 2023, Blackpink proved they’re still the It Girls of K-Pop and fans can’t get enough.Blackpink – made up of members Jisoo, Jennie, Lisa and Rosé – last performed at BST Hyde Park in 2023. They’ve previously appeared at Wembley Arena and The O2, but for their Deadline Tour kicked things up a notch with two shows at Wembley Stadium. In doing so, the four-piece made history as the first K-Pop girl group to play the venue, and only the second girl group in general, following Spice Girls.Wembley Stadium was an ocean of pink(Image: YG Entertainment)The girls recently released Jump, their first new music as a whole group since 2023 track The Girls, which was a promotional song for their mobile game.Since then, each member has launched a successful solo career with each of them pursuing music and some acting, too. Lisa, of course, starred in the latest season of uber-popular show The White Lotus.Article continues belowBut it meant that the songs Blackpink played were tried and tested fan-favourites. It almost felt like a greatest hits tour – and there are many hits to their name. They kicked things off with five of their biggest songs: Kill This Love, Pink Venom, How You Like That, Playing With Fire and Shut Down. With fireworks and pyrotechnics, the girls meant business and showed exactly why they should be playing Wembley Stadium.Blackpink performed their biggest songs, including latest release Jump(Image: YG Entertainment)Just days ago, the Stadium was filled with bucket hat wearing, beer drinking Oasis fans for another highly-anticipated tour.Instead, on Friday, the crowd was an ocean of pink thanks to fans with their lightsticks, waving them around as they danced. The energy continued for each member’s solo stages, with Lisa and Rosé performing songs they hadn’t previously on the tour.Jisoo was up first with the English version of Earthquake, followed by Your Love.Lisa performed Thunder and Lifestyle, the first time she’d performed the track on the tour, and her biggest song Rockstar. She hadn’t treated fans to Rockstar on the other Europe dates, so when the familiar intro started, Wembley Stadium went crazy.Lisa was back on stage shortly after with the rest of the girls for Pretty Savage, Don’t Know What To Do, Whistle, Stay and Lovesick Girls.Blackpink secured their place in girl group history with their Wembley Stadium gig(Image: YG Entertainment)The group is known for its heavy, full sound and powerful lyrics, so the dreamy Stay, released in 2016, showcased they can do it all.Jennie’s solo stage followed, with Handlebars, With the IE and one of her biggest songs Like Jennie.I’d personally been looking forward to Mantra, which she had played on other tour dates, but it didn’t come. However, considering Wembley Stadium did get Lisa’s Rockstar, I couldn’t complain.Rosé, whose solo music is the most different to the Blackpink sound, following things up with Dance All Night, emotional song Toxic Till The End and, of course, her viral hit APT.Her solo section opened with a behind-the-scenes video, including a surprise appearance from FKA Twigs alongside her.Rosé spoke to the crowd more than the other members, making it clear how excited they were to be back in London.Blackpink once again proved they are the It Girls of K-Pop(Image: YG Entertainment)And they kept the energy going with even more hits after Rosé’s final solo performance. If the crowd had been loud before, it was nothing compared to when the group performed Jump. The track, produced by global megastar Diplo, had Wembley Stadium bouncing, with Boombayah, Ddu-Du Ddu-Du following. My personal favourite, As If It’s Your Last, came next. It hadn’t been on the set list at the group’s 2023 BST Hyde Park headline gig, so I was beyond excited to get the chance to see them perform it again. They closed things off with Forever Young, before an encore performance of Jump, Yeah Yeah Yeah and Kick It.Article continues belowBlackpink may be enjoying their solo endeavours, but that night proved that the appetite for the superstar girl group has never been higher. And as long as they keep coming, fans will always have a place for Blackpink in their area.Want all the biggest Showbiz and TV news straight to your inbox?
