Sheridan Smith battled pain over tragic family death while filming new ITV drama

Actress Sheridan Smith thought about her late brother while filming new ITV drama I Fought The Law, which is based on campaigner Ann Ming, whose daughter Julie was murdered06:00, 14 Aug 2025Sheridan has admitted she thought about her late brother when filming her new ITV drama, I Fought The Law(Image: PA)Sheridan Smith was left emotionally drained while making her new drama I Fought The Law.The BAFTA-winning actress plays campaigner Ann Ming, whose daughter Julie was murdered in 1989. It reminded Sheridan of her brother’s tragic death from cancer when she was just eight years old.She said: “This is the first real life story I’ve taken on since becoming a mum and there are different things I tap into now being a mother myself, especially with what Ann went through.“I’ve played parents that lose their kids before, and having lost my older brother, I would always think about what my mum must have gone through. While playing Ann, those feelings were much more raw to tap into.”Sheridan tragically lost her brother when she was eight years old(Image: Dave Benett/Getty Images)The series charts how Ann got an 800-year-old double jeopardy law changed in a bid to get justice for her daughter. Tackling such a serious topic had a severe effect on Sheridan.Article continues belowShe added: “Whenever I play a real person, I really want to feel how they felt. I didn’t go to drama school and I haven’t been trained as an actor, so I don’t really know how to turn those feelings on and off.“I just really try to go there emotionally. Ann was obviously in a state of angst from the minute Julie went missing, because she had that mother’s instinct, she just knew.Sheridan is playing campaigner Ann Ming in the ITV drama(Image: PA)”And she fought and fought for justice. So she was in a state of anxiety for years, and I really tried to go there.”Filming I Fought The Law has been the toughest job Sheridan has ever tackled. But she isn’t complaining because what she endured is nothing compared to what Ann went through. She said: “I love playing real people because this job is all about people’s hearts and getting their stories out there, so if it causes me a few months of distress, that’s nothing. The real Ann is a consultant on the series(Image: PA)“It’s just important for me to do Ann justice. Playing her has hit me more than any other role.“There were some really intense days on this job, but the emotion was a fraction of what it must have felt like for Ann, so you just get on with it.”Article continues belowThe series will air this autumn on ITV1.Have you joined Threads? More than one million people had tuned in within a mere eight minutes to discover details about Taylor and Travis’ romance, how it all began, the NFL connection, and much more. The official New Heights account swiftly took to X to clarify the situation, simply writing: “We hit a glitch but will be back shortly.”Travis first announced his crush on Taylor on the New Heights podcast in 2023(Image: Bruce Bennett, Getty Images)A subsequent message embraced the mayhem, declaring: “Shoutout all the 92%ers and Swifties for actually helping us break the internet.”When New Heights attempted to move beyond its Swift-triggered meltdown with a follow-up post asking supporters for their favourite moment from the episode, the responses were flooded with Swifties who couldn’t resist having a laugh.Article continues belowOne user replied: “When it comes back,” whilst another quipped: “When you add the entire episode.”A third Swiftie chimed in with: “The part where it comes back,” and one devotee of the pop sensation added: “I have no idea. It blacked out. She was amongst thousands of supporters counting down to the episode, which ultimately attracted millions of viewers. The stream nearly made it to the end before technical difficulties struck. The eleventh-hour glitch interrupted a discussion about Bad Bunny’s comic turn in Happy Gilmore 2 (a project that also stars Kelce), her analysis of the Eras Tour entrance design, her “welcome to the NFL” and music industry experiences, and an amusing waxing anecdote that left the Kelce brothers in stitches.Prior to the broadcast cutting out, the pair explored subjects including Swift’s initial unfamiliarity with NFL matters before romancing the Chiefs star, his unwavering and unconventional methods of winning her affections, and the tale of how the 14-time Grammy champion regained control of her record masters.Article continues belowSwift’s New Heights guest spot was broadcast two days ahead of the Chiefs’ second pre-season fixture against the Seattle Seahawks on Friday. ‘I glamped at Boomtown 2025 and realised I’ve done festivals wrong my whole life’

Boomtown 2025 was one for the history books but this year a huge change to our camping experience has permanently altered how we rave for the rest of our lives…20:40, 13 Aug 2025Updated 22:56, 13 Aug 2025Bekka joined Daily Star back in 2021 after achieving an undergrad in Journalism and a masters in Film Studies. She enjoys reporting on horror movies, The Traitors, film and TV theories and the wacky world of American showbiz. Bekka has also been regularly reporting on rapper P Diddy since his arrest. Aside from work she loves attending festivals, travelling, watching films, reading and being outdoors (preferably in the sun). Here’s exactly why Boomtown is our favourite festival…(Image: Carly Hacon)Boomtown 2025 was like nothing we’ve ever experience before, for all the right reasons. We didn’t think last year’s epic blowout event could be topped but we were definitely mistaken. Thanks to Skylark campsite, we’ve never had a smoother festival experience and our four days at Boomtown were a breeze. Here’s what went down at Matterly Estate and how we realised that once you go glamping, you’ll never go back to camping!Boomtown is all about equality, inclusion and togetherness and from the moment we stepped foot on site, we were met with that familiar community camaraderie we’d been waiting a whole 365 days to feel once again. We had some truly lifesaving assistance getting our bags to Skylark camp, which is nestled just at the top of the famous Boomtown stairs about a three minute stroll from Tribe of Frog (more on that later). We had a seamless check in and were given Skylark wristbands before venturing off to find our tent. Shoutout to our new friends who saw us struggling and ran over to help in the blistering heat – lifesavers!Festivalgoers can opt for various Skylark packages with a wide range of accommodation types on offer. We walked past everything from wooden cabins equipped with fully functioning electricity, giant teepee tents that could house more than four people at a time and huge silver caravans that looked like something out of a sci-fi movie.Article continues belowAs you can see, the Skylark bell tent was well-equipped for a weekend of mischief(Image: Carly Hacon)Our home for the weekend was a spacious bell tent decked out with mattresses, metal bed frames, pillows, duvets, cushions, blankets, a mirror, a lamp, a side table and even a door mat to make us feel right at home. We can’t recommend Skylark enough and the option is well worth the upgrade for the tent alone, let alone the amenities.Campers can also enjoy exclusive on-site food stands with smaller queues than the main arena, chilled water fountains, a fully stocked bar with frozen cocktail machines (the margarita slush was a perfect pre-rave treat), flushing toilets and warm showers…oh, the showers. Each morning we washed our sins away in cubicles fitted with hooks, mirrors and sinks – an experience that definitely helped us feel a little more human. We were kept warm from the elements at night and in the morning we unzipped the tent all the way round the bottom to help air circulation, which was a lifesaver as the sun climbed higher in the sky throughout the day. There’s honestly nothing better than crawling into bed and resting your head on a proper pillow after countless hours of dancing with achy feet and a croaky voice – we slept like queens the whole time.Everyone knows that general camping is loud and boisterous as the party continues until the sun comes up, but Skylark has a more subdued atmosphere during the early hours so that everyone can get their beauty sleep. However, this doesn’t mean that sense of community is lost as the energy certainly picks back up during the day.We spent all day exploring the arena and all night bopping from stage to stage(Image: Carly Hacon)Just like at any other festival we lounged in our camping chairs and nattered with neighbours all day long, but as we get older we have to admit that the peace and quiet between the hours of 4am-11am is very, very much appreciated.Top tip – don’t just sit around camp all day listening to your own music on a speaker, you can do that at home! Boomtown is full of quirky characters ready to show off their moves, immersive actors willing to chat and send you on a quest, jewellery workshops, tightrope lessons, shops and hidden rooms that transport you to another dimension. Our favourite activity was setting off with our backpacks full of alcohol and wandering aimlessly between stages in search of the perfect spot to people watch. From ravers dressed as butterflies, caterpillars and fairies to groups of lads wearing matching rubber duck shirts, from festivalgoers dressed in steampunk finery to hippies sporting woodland elf ears, everywhere we went was like a warped Where’s Wally painting.Boomtown pulls out all the stops – and then some – every year and 2025 was no different(Image: Jody Harltley/Boomtown)First we grooved to drum and bass in the sunlight between the trees at Hidden Woods, admiring outfits and exchanging trinkets before popping over to Tribe of Frog to scout out some psytrance weirdness. The stage itself was covered in neon-painted poison dart frogs, while giant fluorescent stars next to twinkling light installations hung in the trees above.Once suitably in the party mood we headed into the main arena to admire the attention to detail in Old Town, chat with actors who helped us forget the outside world ever existed and duck in and out of the countless secret rooms dotted around the city-sized event that hosted a whopping 75,999 people this year after organisers increased the capacity for 2025.We made sure to meet up with old friends and catch The Britney Spears Appreciation Society – it’s tradition at this point(Image: Carly Hacon)Our ultimate Boomtown trick is to bring knick knacks and trinkets to barter and persuade actors into revealing clues and to point you in the right direction, but we definitely had the most fun just handing them out to our fellow “citizens” to make their day. We bought a pack of 80 mini animals which was, without a doubt, our best pre-Boom purchase – we offered tiny purple hippos to people in eye-catching outfits, teeny green stingrays to anyone tearing up the dance floor, miniature orange llamas to girls that smiled at us, itsy-bitsy kittens to anyone partying solo and even got some equally adorable presents in return. We noticed a lot of solo ravers but no-one looked lonely and we felt love from every angle, as everyone there is keen to help one another have the best experience possible. For anyone debating going alone in 2026, be sure to check out online forums such as Reddit where people post meet-up times and information about where best to camp so you can make friends along the way.We made so many life lasting memories with new and old pals – shout out to Freddie and Dan!(Image: Carly Hacon)Our absolute favourite stages were Hidden Woods, Tangled Roots, Twisted Time Machine (specifically for the Britney Spears Appreciation Society and The Brat Pack Bangerz sets), Tribe of Frog and of course Lion’s Gate, but that goes without saying. The closing ceremony, held as the final act on Sunday night, was one of the best sets we’ve ever witnessed and we danced transfixed by the fireworks, pyrotechnics and and rainbow lasers. As for our favourite sets, we loved Shosh B2B Flava D at Hidden Woods, Basslayerz, Oko B2B DJ Limited and Harriet Jaxxon at Lion’s Gate, and Spice at Grand Central. We partied until we could party no more, then dug deep, found some strength and somehow carried on – Boomtown is our favourite place on earth and nothing even comes close. This year’s lineup had the perfect mix of big name artists with up-and-coming names and we can’t wait to come back and do it all over again. It’s the perfect place to zone out, forget about your troubles and immerse yourself into the marvellous magic. P.S here’s a big shout out to all the people we met this weekend – you made it truly unforgettable!Until next year, Boomtown! Led Zeppelin legend Robert Plant claims he could be an ‘Elvis impersonator’

The LED Zeppelin legend Robert Plant has always been a mega fan of the King of rock ‘n’ roll and does a rather convincing impression, he claims, as he reflects on his music career17:13, 13 Aug 2025Updated 17:13, 13 Aug 2025Robert Plant can do a cracking Elvis impression, he claims(Image: Getty Images)LED Zeppelin legend Robert Plant has claimed that if his career peters out he could be an “Elvis impersonator”. The frontman has always been a mega fan of the King of rock ‘n’ roll and does a mean impression. Robert, 76, said: “Well, at the end of my first formative period, I was in what you’d loosely call the biggest band in the world.”The fervour that surrounded that, it was an unearthly condition and because of its terrible finales, I got suddenly launched into that post-Zeppelin thing where I went, I’m never gonna play any Zeppelin stuff again.”But I was on my own, and Atlantic, Ahmet [Ertegun] and people like that, were saying: ‘Why don’t you put the band back together?’ I said, Look, I’ve made a record called Shaken ‘n’ Stirred. Nobody likes it, but I like it. F*** it. Nobody liked Zeppelin, but we liked it. F*** it.Robert Plant reflected on the history of the band(Image: WireImage)”And if it ever gets to another point where it’s not like that in my quantifying of it, then I’m lost.”I’ll just be an Elvis impersonator. I’m really good at doing Elvis!”Article continues belowMeanwhile Robert, who’s having a partial left knee replacement op this month, told Mojo he enjoys a quieter life now. He explained: “Because I have been to some incredible pinnacles which were unguarded.”In the beginning with Zeppelin, there was no T-shirts, no security.”Later on, we each had a cop with a gun with us, everywhere we went. But we were really still just kids.”So the structure of everything was not covered. Everybody found jobs for themselves on the périphérique of the star quality: somebody to look after you, somebody to offer you something, somebody to coerce somebody not to look after you… all that stuff is just a mess.Plant claims his best music is hidden(Image: Getty Images)”What were the hits? How can they be related to now, where do they fit? They fit as a sort of memoir.”When people say that I don’t like Stairway To Heaven, I just don’t like the idea of it. These iconic things – they’re just what they are.”But you know, most people have missed some of the best Zeppelin stuff.”Have you joined Threads?
