Strictly’s Amy Dowden opens up about hitting ‘all time low’ after finishing cancer treatment

Strictly’s Amy Dowden opens up about the emotional and physical challenges she faced post-cancer treatment and how she’s looking after herself now. Charlie Bayliss10:02, 23 Jul 2025Updated 10:03, 23 Jul 2025Amy now embraces a stronger version of herself while preparing for her much-anticipated return to the show(Image: PinPep)Strictly Come Dancing’s Amy Dowden has opened up about her battle with cancer, revealing she experienced an “all time low” after completing treatment but now feels like a “newer, stronger” version of herself, eager to make a comeback on the dance floor. The 34 year old professional dancer made a valiant return to the BBC show last year after being diagnosed with breast cancer in 2023. However, her journey was cut short when she had to bow out mid-series due to a foot injury while partnered with JLS sensation JB Gill. The setback prompted the Welsh star to ponder her recovery process and the importance of self-compassion.Amy admits it was a long road to recovery(Image: PinPep)”I feel like Amy’s back, but actually a newer, stronger version of me,” she confessed. “I’m really grateful to be in this position. [But] It’s been a long road of recovery.”After undergoing a mastectomy, chemotherapy, and entering a treatment-induced menopause as part of her cancer battle, Amy admitted to being ‘a bit naïve’ upon ringing the bell – a symbolic gesture marking the end of cancer treatment. “I honestly thought that that’s it, I had my life back.”Yet, the path to regaining her former strength and mental well-being proved more challenging than expected. She opened up about how this made her feel at a recent launch of the Keep Ahead disease awareness campaign. The campaign, spearheaded and financed by Novartis Pharmaceuticals UK, is designed to shed light on life post-breast cancer. While ringing the bell might appear as a moment of joy for people outside of cancer treatment, Amy’s experience tells a different story. In the period following her bell-ringing, Amy confessed to hitting an “all time low”. “I was very emotional,” she said. “I was scared, petrified and thought ‘what if I haven’t done enough.”Yet, she experienced ‘guilt’ over these emotions: “I felt why am I feeling like this when I should be happy and celebrating when deep inside I felt angry and bitter.”Amy reflected on her journey post-cancer treatment during the launch of the Keep Ahead campaign(Image: PinPep)She highlighted the extensive road to recovery; regaining stamina, rebuilding confidence – particularly in her line of work. Moreover, she had to come to terms with what she had been through.”After I rang the bell, I thought I was done, but I was deluded… The road to recovery was pretty grim to be honest with you and my stamina levels were the lowest they’ve ever been in my life. Having to start that journey to the dance floor felt like a million miles away.”She continued: “After the last chemo, I don’t want to say I felt worse, but you know, yeah it did, because you feel like you’re doing something during it [cancer treatment]. Then all of a sudden, you face the reality of trying to rebuild a new version of you.”But the dancer has since battled her way back to fitness and is now committed to living life to its fullest. She has recently completed filming the latest series of Celebrity Hunted, and concluded her dance tour across the UK earlier this year alongside fellow Strictly star Carlos Gu.She has also been ensuring she dedicates quality time with family and friends whilst making rest a priority. “I’ve learned to take time to rest, recover and spend time with my loved ones.”Article continues belowDuring Celebrity Hunted, Amy was required to go “off-grid” and avoid using electronic gadgets including her mobile – a digital cleanse she plans to adopt more frequently to be more engaged with her husband Ben.Amy explained: “I was always on my phone and I’ve learned that you don’t need to be contactable 24/7, and to put the phone away and appreciate what’s in front of you. I’m not going to just scroll through social media and watch what everyone else is doing.”That relaxation and recovery has led to a happier Amy and now she believes she can come back to Strictly even better. She said: “Last year, I put so much pressure on myself. I’ve taken that pressure away from me now and I can’t wait to just enjoy it.” More

Ozzy Osbourne bit head off bat on stage – then the story started to change

One of Ozzy Osbourne’s most iconic moments is when he bit the head off a bat during a performance, but over the years the story of what happened and whether the bat was alive has changed08:49, 23 Jul 2025Updated 08:49, 23 Jul 2025Ozzy Osbourne bit the head off a bat, though he claimed to think it was a toy(Image: Alamy Stock Photo)Ozzy Osbourne will go down in history as one of rock music’s biggest icons. The Black Sabbath legend has died at the age of 76, with wife Sharon and the family releasing a touching statement. And while fans will all have their favourite moments of the star, one of his most well known saw him bite the head off a live bat during one gig. Well, maybe.Back on January 20, 1982, Prince of Darkness Ozzy was on stage promoting his second solo album Diary of a Madman. He had a sickening part of the show where he would lob bits of raw meat or animal body parts, like intestines, into the crowd. When it became clear that it was an ongoing thing, fans started turning up armed and ready.Ozzy Osbourne has died at the age of 76(Image: Getty Images)During the gig at Des Moines’ Veterans Memorial Auditorium in Iowa, US, a bat was thrown up on the stage and Ozzy bit its head off. Whether or not the bat was dead was something which would be a mystery for a while. In 2010, Ozzy appeared to believe it had been alive. He wrote in his autobiography I Am Ozzy: “Immediately, though, something felt wrong. Very wrong. For a start my mouth was instantly full of this warm, gloopy liquid. Then the head in my mouth twitched.”Somebody threw a bat. I just thought it was a rubber bat. And I picked it up and put it in my mouth. I bit into it.”He said he then realised: “Oh no, it’s real. It was a real live bat.”The story started off differently, though. In 2006 there was a subtle change. He told the BBC: “This bat comes on. I thought it was one of them Hallowe’en jokes bats ‘cos it had some string around its neck. The bat was apparently very real, and also very dead(Image: Getty Images North America)”I bite into it, and I look to my left and Sharon was going [gesturing no].”And I’m like, what you talking about? She [says], ‘It’s a dead real bat.” And I’m… I know now!”The man who threw the bat up was reportedly a man called Mark Neal, who was 17 at the time. According to a 2005 article from the Des Moines Register, the bat was definitely dead – and had been for a while.Mark said his brother had brought the bat home a few weeks earlier and tried to keep it alive, but failed.Article continues belowOzzy was rushed for a rabies shot afterwards and the venue would go on to ban live animals being used in performances without prior consent.Weirdly, Ozzy had bit the head off two dead doves during a meeting when a PR woman had been annoying him “just to shut her up”.Want all the biggest Showbiz and TV news straight to your inbox? Nick Cave says son’s tragic death after falling off cliffs has ‘evolved’

Nick Cave has opened up on the pain he and his wife Susie Bick have felt since the death of their 15-year-old son Arthur, who tragically died after falling from a cliff in 2015Andy Gilpin Deputy Editor in Chief08:24, 23 Jul 2025Updated 08:24, 23 Jul 2025Nick Cave on son’s death: ‘The pain remains, but it evolves over time'(Image: BANG Showbiz)Nick Cave has revealed that the pain of his son’s death has “evolved over time”. Arthur, Nick’s 15-year-old son, tragically died in 2015 after falling from the Ovingdean Gap cliffs in Brighton, England. In a recent letter on his theredhandfiles.com website, Nick shared how he and his wife Susie have been managing their grief over the years.Nick wrote: “The pain remains, but I have found that it evolves over time. Grief blossoms with age, becoming less a personal affront, less a cosmic betrayal, and more a poetic quality of being as we learn to surrender to it. As we are confronted with the intolerable injustice of death, what seems unbearable ultimately turns out not to be unbearable at all. Sorrow grows richer, deeper, and more textured. It feels more interesting, creative, and lovely.”To my great surprise, I discovered that I was part of a common human story. I began to recognise the immense value and potential of our humanness while simultaneously acknowledging, at my core, our terrifyingly perilous situation. I learned we all actually die. I realised that although each of us is special and unique, our pain and brokenness is not. Over time, Susie and I came to understand that the world is not indifferent or cruel, but precious and loving – indeed, lovely – tilting ever toward good.”Nick, who also lost his eldest son Jethro in 2022, added that he and Susie agree that things “get better in time” and he shared how sorrow has become “a way of life” for them both.He expressed: “Sorrow becomes a way of life, part laughter, part tears, with very little space between. It is a way of conducting oneself in the world, of loving it, of worshipping it.Article continues below”I read this letter to Susie, and she agreed that things get better in time. She reminded me that her dreams of Arthur from ten years ago were terrible, scorched-earth affairs, full of shame and weeping. She said Arthur still visits her every week. He is always the same age, around ten years old. Nothing much happens, he simply sits with her. Sometimes she laces his shoes.”Sometimes she combs his hair. Sometimes he crawls into her lap and wraps his arms around her neck. She told me that she recently had a dream in which Arthur had a button for a nose, and when she pressed it a little blue light blinked on. There is no despair or remorse in these dreams. They are, instead, an uncomplicated joy.”I’m not sure what else I’ve learned, except that here we still are, a decade later, living within the radiant heart of the trauma, the place where all thoughts and dreams converge and where all hope and sorrow reside, the bright and teary eye of the storm – this whirling boy who is God, like every other thing. We remember him today.” More

Truth behind Ozzy Osbourne and Sharon’s ‘death pact’ as rocker dies aged 76

Ozzy Osbourne and wife Sharon were long rumoured to have had a ‘death pact’ after she once said they would seek assisted-suicide if either of them developed Alzheimer’s07:48, 23 Jul 2025Updated 08:16, 23 Jul 2025Social media recently went wild with rumours of a ‘suicide pact'(Image: FilmMagic)Rocker Ozzy Osbourne’s death at the age of 76 has reignited rumours that he and wife Sharon had a “death pact”. In the weeks leading up to his death, old comments from Sharon reemerged after she spoke of assisted-suicide and plans to “go to Switzerland”.However fans ran with the comments and twisted her words into something else. Just days before Ozzy died, daughter Kelly spoke out in an angry Instagram post slamming the claims. The claims first got brought up in Sharon’s 2007 memoir Survivor: My Story – The Next Chapter. In it, she said she and Ozzy had agreed to get help from assisted-suicide organisation Dignitas if either of them developed dementia. Sharon’s father Don Arden had died from Alzheimer’s and it appeared, as per later comments, she didn’t want to suffer if she got it too.Sharon once claimed she and Ozzy would go to Dignitas if they got dementia(Image: Getty Images)The same year, Sharon told The Mirror that she “believes in euthanasia”. She added that the couple had “drawn up plans to go to the assisted-suicide flat in Switzerland if we ever have an illness that affects our brains”.”If Ozzy or I ever got Alzheimer’s, that’s it – we’d be off,” she said.More recently, it got brought up during a 2023 episode of their podcast, which saw Sharon sit down with son Jack and daughter Kelly.Jack asked if that plan was still in place, and Sharon appeared to confirm it, saying: “Do you think that we’re going to suffer?”Kelly said Sharon’s words were just ‘to get attention one time'(Image: Getty Images for The Recording Academy)She went on: “I don’t want it to actually hurt, as well. Mental suffering is enough pain without physical. So, if you’ve got mental and physical – see ya.”In the lead up to and after Ozzy’s final performance, in which he sat on the stage in a black, bat-emblazoned throne, social media went wild with the old claims. Many believed the so-called “pact” meant the other would seek assisted-suicide if either of them died. Fans took it as the ultimate sign of love – even though it wasn’t necessarily true.Kelly Osbourne told fans to stop claims that her parents had a suicide pact(Image: Billboard via Getty Images)Earlier in July, it was clear Kelly had had enough. She posted a damning Instagram Story, slamming fans for their discussion of the “death pact”.She said: “Stop making articles or posts about how you think my parents are having a suicide pact. That was b******* my mum said to get attention one time.”However, eerily, she also said: “And my dad’s not dying. Stop.”So, while Sharon and Ozzy did, at least at one point, say they had plans for assisted-suicide, it was only if they got dementia. For emotional support, you can call the Samaritans 24-hour helpline on 116 123, email jo@samaritans.org, visit a Samaritans branch in person or go to the Samaritans website.Article continues belowWant all the biggest Showbiz and TV news straight to your inbox? The Black Sabbath frontman’s family, including his wife Sharon, to whom he was married for more than 40 years, were by his side in his final moments on Tuesday morning. This heartbreaking news comes shortly after Ozzy’s last live performance at Villa Park, the home ground of Aston Villa, during his Back to the Beginning show. The family released a poignant statement: “It is with more sadness than mere words can convey that we have to report that our beloved Ozzy Osbourne has passed away this morning. He was with his family and surrounded by love.”The Osbournes released a statement confirming Ozzy’s death(Image: Corbis via Getty Images)They continued, requesting privacy during this difficult time: “We ask everyone to respect our family privacy at this time. Sharon, Jack, Kelly, Aimee and Louis.”The announcement of his passing included a location stamp, “Birmingham, England July 22, 2025″, indicating that Ozzy had returned to his roots one final time, reports the Mirror.Prior to his declining health, Ozzy and Sharon had expressed their desire to move back to the UK from Los Angeles, with Ozzy sharing his eagerness to return home. Although they had planned to make the move earlier, Ozzy’s ongoing battle with Parkinson’s disease and multiple surgeries had postponed their plans.”It’s time for me to spend some time with my grandkids,” he revealed to the Guardian in May as he geared up for his swansong performance. “I don’t want to die in a hotel room somewhere. I want to spend the rest of my life with my family.”The rock legend and his wife Sharon were expected to make their Buckinghamshire residence their permanent home following the farewell gig.Ozzy wanted to move back to the UK and be with his family(Image: Getty Images)Ozzy has been vocal about his longing to return to Britain, expressing his intentions as early as August 2022 after more than 20 years in Los Angeles, where he lambasted: “Everything’s f****** ridiculous (in America).”He also pointed to the rampant gun violence in the States as a further incentive to relocate. “I’m fed up with people getting killed every day,” he lamented to The Observer.”God knows how many people have been shot in school shootings. And there was that mass shooting in Vegas at that concert… it’s f****** crazy.”Yet, Ozzy’s deteriorating health had put a spanner in the works, postponing the move for years. In a chat with Planet Rock’s Loz Guest about Black Sabbath’s star-studded Back to the Beginning concert on July 5, Sharon confirmed that the event had paved the way for Ozzy’s return. She disclosed: “He’s coming over in March. His brothers (in Black Sabbath), he’s excited to be here with them.”Ozzy fulfilled his final wish before his sad death(Image: Daily Mirror)When quizzed on whether they are indeed resettling in the UK for good, Sharon affirmed: “Yeah, we are.”Born John Michael Osbourne on December 3, 1948 in Aston, Birmingham, Ozzy left education at 15 and took on various jobs including factory labour before joining forces with school mate Geezer Butler in multiple bands. The duo subsequently connected with Black Sabbath’s other founding figures, Tony Iommi and Bill Ward, to establish what was initially dubbed Earth Blues Company – later abbreviated to Earth – in 1968.Originally a Mod with a passion for soul music, as detailed in his biography on the group’s official website, Osbourne developed his more sinister persona after penning lyrics for a track called Black Sabbath, inspired by the 1963 Boris Karloff film bearing the same title.Article continues belowBack in 2022, Ozzy proclaimed “Birmingham forever”, whilst making a surprise appearance at the Commonwealth Games closing ceremony in his hometown. The Black Sabbath legend was amongst numerous Brummie performers to take the stage, including Dexy’s Midnight Runners, UB40, and Musical Youth.Want all the biggest Showbiz and TV news straight to your inbox?
