The Thing’s director ‘exposes’ true identity of gruesome creature 43 years on

The Thing’s director John Carpenter has hinted at who turns into the horrifying villain at the end of the film, an answer which apparently was hidden in plain sight all along…16:47, 26 Mar 2025Updated 16:49, 26 Mar 2025The Thing official trailer for 1982 filmJohn Carpenter has hinted at the identity of who turns into The Thing. The iconic sci-fi horror film was released back in 1982 and the ending is left purposefully ambiguous to keep fans guessing. Viewers are never told which character – R.J. MacReady, played by Kurt Russell, or Childs, played by Keith David – transforms into the creature.Article continues belowFor 43 years director John Carpenter has kept audiences debating, but now there’s a new evidence to suggest which character meets their demise. While at a screening of The Thing at the David Geffen Theater in Los Angeles, Carpenter told fellow director Bong Joon Ho something that would change movie history forever. He confessed there is a “giant hint” in the middle of The Thing that indicates the identity of the beast. According to reports, he also joked that he’d tell all to anyone who sent an undisclosed sum of money “in an envelope to his house”.The Thing’s identity is never revealedJohn revealed that the main actors had no idea which of them would become The Thing: “They had no clue, but they had to play it human, you see. The creature imitates perfectly.””It could be one of us, it could be somebody in the audience and there’s no way of telling. So I knew, they didn’t know.”Director Joe Russo took to X/Twitter to write: “I think I found that hint,” as horror fans gathered to hear his theory. MacReady is told that The Thing can replicate using cells, which means they should only eat or drink stuff they’ve touched.Carpenter hinted at which character turns into the worm-like creatureHowever, MacReady offers his alcohol to Childs as the film comes to an end, which could mean one of two things – he’s already forgotten the crucial rule, which is unlikely due to the meticulous continuity used in Hollywood, or that he was already The Thing.Russo wrote a bombshell statement on X/Twitter: “As soon as Childs drinks from the bottle, The Thing has won. It’s beaten its most skeptical, final threat.”He also pointed out that the last line of the film supports this wild claim: “Why don’t we just wait here for a little while, see what happens?”The Thing’s ending has been tormenting audiences for almost 45 yearsRusso also blew the minds of many horror enthusiasts as he wrote: “[Did you see that] OR…did you watch a BETTER imitation kill the POORER imitation because it had a better chance of infiltrating society upon rescue.”However, the controversial theory stirred up a lot of comments from diehard fans of the movie as they rushed to challenge Russo’s tweets. One person said: “I still think it’s Childs because we don’t know his whereabouts for a long time heading into the final scene, but Keith David will tell you he’s 100% not The Thing.”Russo shot down the claims: “Carpenter said both actors don’t know…Childs always felt like a red herring to me.”Article continues belowJoin the Daily Star’s WhatsApp for the sexiest headlines, showbiz gossip and lots moreThe Daily Star is now on WhatsApp and we want you to join us!Through the app, we’ll send you the sassiest showbiz stories, some naught headline and a seismic smattering of aliens…along with the latest breaking news of course. To join our community, all you have to do to join isclick on this link, select ‘Join Chat’ and you’re in!No one will be able to see who has sign up and no one can send messages except for the Daily Star team. Vanessa Feltz opens up on This Morning exit and says she wished she could stay

Vanessa Feltz launched her brand new daytime chat show on Channel 5 earlier this week, but she admitted in a candid interview that she would have loved to stay at the ITV programme14:51, 26 Mar 2025Vanessa Feltz ’embarrassed’ after watching video of herselfVanessa Feltz says she wishes she could have stayed at This Morning after 33 years.Television stalwart Vanessa, 63, recently took to the airwaves with her brand new self-titled chat show on Monday (March 24) to mixed reviews. It came after she bid farewell to ITV flagship show This Morning after 33 years at the show.Article continues belowWith Vanessa officially on the air on rival Channel 5, former Celebrity Big Brother star Vanessa has now broken her silence on her exit from the show. She admitted that she was already missing the show “terribly” and had secretly wished that she could continue her stint on This Morning, despite moving channels.Vanessa said that she was going to miss her family at This Morning tremendouslySpeaking to Heart Bingo, the daytime chat show host explained that the decision to leave This Morning did not come lightly. “It is emotional leaving This Morning,” she explained, “I absolutely love that show.”When I first did it in 1992, I was just 30, and I’ve been on that show all these years, and I’ve never been bored by it,” she beamed. “I think it’s a very clever show, I think it’s very warm and inviting, and I think it’s got something for everyone.”She went on to explain that the variety of items on the show such as fashion and cooking appealed to her greatly. On top of this, she beamed: “I really do consider the team and crew at This Morning my actual friends.”She joked that she would have loved to be on both ITV and Channel 5 simultaneouslyWhen asked about whether she preferred to keep her gig at This Morning, Vanessa said she would have leapt at the opportunity. She conceded that she “obviously understood” that she could be on two rival broadcasters at the same time.”But knowing me, I would have squeezed in a quick This Morning and then rushed over on the back of a bike to do my own show on Channel 5,” the star joked. “I would have been perfectly comfortable doing that, but I don’t think it’s considered best practise to go from one show to another on different channels.”Vanessa has been a staple of TV in Britain since she burst onto our screens in 1994 with her chat show, also titled Vanessa. The talk show revolved around people coming to the writer and asking questions, looking for advice – to which she gave a brutally honest answer to.It comes after the first episode of her new show failed to attract audiencesHer new venture officially launched on Monday, but viewers were less than impressed with the show on its opening day, garnering a rather dismal 83,000 viewers. For comparison, ITV daytime fave Loose Women – which was airing at the same time as Vanessa’s show – brought in a whopping 686,000 viewers, almost eight times as many viewers. However, despite the complaints that came in during the broadcast, Vanessa was unfazed, choosing instead to take the trolls head on. She sneered to one bad comment which suggested they would scoop their eyes out instead of watching her show that she would indeed send the spoon on behalf of the cast for them to carry out the plan.Article continues belowVanessa airs every weekday at 12pm on 5.For more of the latest showbiz and TV news from the Daily Star, make sure you sign up for one of our newsletters here.
