David Arquette 'Thrilled' to Be Back as Dewey Riley in 'Scream 5'

    Dimension Films

Production for the fifth instalment of the horror movie franchise is expected to begin in Wilmington, North Carolina in late 2020 with Tyler Gillett serving behind the lens.
    May 19, 2020
AceShowbiz – David Arquette has confirmed the “Scream” movie franchise is heading back to the big screen with him reprising his cop character Sheriff Dewey Riley.
The actor, who portrayed Riley in all four “Scream” movies, has revealed he’ll be reuniting with his “Scream family” once the coronavirus lockdown is over.
“I am thrilled to be playing Dewey again…,” he says. “Scream has been such a big part of my life, and for both the fans and myself, I look forward to honouring (late creator) Wes Craven’s legacy.”
Movie bosses at Spyglass Entertainment are in talks with more cast members with a view to adding them to the fifth “Scream” instalment, which will begin production in Wilmington, North Carolina later this year. Tyler Gillett will direct.
Neve Campbell and Matthew Lillard have both recently expressed interest in returning to the “Scream” franchise, with Lillard telling Entertainment Tonight he’s up for bringing back his character, Stuart, even though he was killed by Campbell’s Sidney Prescott in the first film back in 1996.
“I would love to come back,” he said. “Actors, for the most part, most of us are out here tap dancing as fast as we can to feed our families and get jobs. So if there was a chance to come back, that made sense, yes.”
Campbell previously told The Hollywood Reporter, “We’re just in the beginning phases of negotiations, and we’ll have to see where it goes with Covid and everything. There are a lot of things up in the air.”

Disney’s Head of Streaming Is New TikTok C.E.O.

LOS ANGELES — The Walt Disney Company’s top streaming executive, Kevin Mayer, resigned on Monday to become the chief executive of TikTok, the app for making and sharing short videos that has exploded in popularity during the coronavirus pandemic.Mr. Mayer, 58, will also serve as chief operating officer of ByteDance, the Chinese conglomerate that owns TikTok. “I was happy with my job at Disney,” Mr. Mayer said by phone. “The magnitude of this opportunity was just something I couldn’t pass up.” He cited gaming and music as two expansion possibilities. (He sounded considerably less eager to post TikToks of himself.)TikTok’s app has been downloaded about 1.9 billion times worldwide, including 172 million downloads in the United States, according to Sensor Tower, an app data firm. And its surging popularity has increased during the pandemic. In the first quarter of this year, it was downloaded 307 million times, more than any other app in the world, according to Sensor Tower data. That popularity has made TikTok by far the biggest digital success for a Chinese-owned company in the Western world. As a result, it has faced deep distrust across the U.S. government. Several government agencies, including nearly all branches of the military, have barred employees from downloading or using the app. In March, Senator Josh Hawley, a Republican from Missouri, proposed legislation to bar any federal employee from using the app.“.@tiktok_us previously told me they couldn’t attend hearings and testify because executives were located in #China,” Mr. Hawley wrote on Twitter after Mr. Mayer’s hiring was announced. “But this new executive lives in the USA. I look forward to hearing from him. Under oath.”Both Republicans and Democrats have questioned the Chinese government’s influence over the app. Senator Chuck Schumer of New York, the Democratic minority leader, and Senator Tom Cotton, Republican from Arkansas, co-wrote a letter to the director of national intelligence in October, requesting a review of the national-security implications of TikTok’s expanding influence. TikTok has meanwhile hired a number of American executives and employees to run its business and review content on its app. Vanessa Pappas, a former YouTube executive who joined TikTok as one of its American chiefs last year, said in a November blog post that the company’s United States-based team would call the shots on TikTok’s U.S. business, including by setting specific rules for American users. Now Mr. Mayer will provide a clear link between TikTok and ByteDance’s leadership in Beijing, with his dual roles at the two companies.Mr. Mayer’s departure from Disney is not entirely a surprise. Disney’s board of directors passed over him this year when it was looking for a successor for Robert A. Iger, who abruptly stepped down in February. (Mr. Iger remains executive chairman, with a focus on the creative process.) Many people in Hollywood and on Wall Street had viewed Mr. Mayer as the logical internal candidate because the future of Disney rests on its ability to transform itself into a streaming titan. The top job, however, went to Bob Chapek, the lower-profile chairman of Disney’s theme parks and consumer products businesses.“Kevin has had an extraordinary impact on our company over the years,” Mr. Chapek said in a statement. “Having worked alongside Kevin for many years on the senior management team, I am enormously grateful to him for his support and friendship.”Despite being passed over, Mr. Mayer had indicated that he was in no hurry to leave. There is no business more important to Disney than streaming, and Mr. Mayer has relished working on services like Disney Plus, which rolled out in November and now has about 55 million subscribers — a runaway hit. Disney Plus will arrive in parts of Asia and Latin America this year. Hulu, which has about 30 million subscribers, and Hotstar, the leading streaming service in India, have also been part of Mr. Mayer’s portfolio.Mr. Mayer is best known as Disney’s longtime deals maven. Before running the direct-to-consumer and international division for the past two years, he served as Disney’s chief strategy officer, helping to orchestrate the purchases of Pixar, Marvel, Lucasfilm, most of 21st Century Fox and BamTech, a technology company that specializes in streaming video.Mr. Mayer joined Disney in 1993 before leaving in 2000 to run Playboy.com. He soon returned to Disney to work on Go.com, a web portal that eventually failed, and other Disney websites, including ESPN.com, before moving to strategic planning.Disney named Rebecca Campbell as Mr. Mayer’s successor. She has been ascending quickly. Just last year, she was named president of the Disneyland Resort in Anaheim, Calif. Before that, Ms. Campbell had a senior leadership role at Disney’s Europe, Middle East and Africa operation; she worked on the launch plan for Disney Plus. Disney also named a new chairman for theme parks and consumer products: Josh D’Amaro, who was president of Walt Disney World in Orlando, Fla.ByteDance, founded in 2012, has quickly become a major player in the global tech industry with a number of wildly popular apps, including Douyin, in effect the Chinese version of TikTok, and Toutiao, a news aggregator that has run afoul of Chinese regulators for its sometimes racy content. Zhang Yiming, 37, its secretive founder and chief executive, has quickly become one of the richest and most influential people in China. While scrutiny of ByteDance increases with its size, his comments have resembled those of Mark Zuckerberg, Facebook’s chief, arguing that ByteDance is a tech company, not a media company.A TikTok spokesman on Monday stressed that TikTok was not owned by a Beijing-based company. Instead, its parent company, ByteDance Ltd., is incorporated in the Cayman Islands, though he could not say how many people are based there. That entity owns TikTok and all of the businesses in China, he said.Mr. Mayer will remain in his current home in Los Angeles, though he will travel frequently to Bytedance’s headquarters in Beijing, as well as TikTok’s major offices in New York, London, Japan and India, the spokesman said.Brooks Barnes reported from Los Angeles, and Jack Nicas from Oakland, Calif. Nicholas Hoult Names Audition for 'X-Men: First Class' His Strangest One

    Instagram

During an interview for GQ magazine, the ‘Tolkien’ star recalls being asked by director Matthew Vaughn to do ‘Family Guy’ impression when he was vying for the role of Hank McCoy/Beast.
    May 18, 2020
AceShowbiz – Actor Nicholas Hoult has shared his strangest audition experience in a new clip looking back on his career.
During the video for GQ magazine, the star, 30, revealed that when he auditioned for “X-Men: First Class”, director Matthew Vaughn had a strange request.
“Matthew Vaughn asked me to do a couple of takes in an American accent as you kind of saw the character. But then also (to) do a take doing an impression of Stewie Griffin from ‘Family Guy’,” Nicholas shared about his audition for the role of Hank McCoy/Beast.
“I had watched a lot of ‘Family Guy’ in my teen years growing up, so I was like, ‘OK, I think I’ve got a pretty good impression of Stewie Griffin lined up.’ ”

He added, “So I did a whole version of the take as Stewie Griffin and sent it off. So maybe that helped me get the part? I don’t know.”

Lin-Manuel Miranda and Broadway Stars Slam CBS for Replacing Tony Awards With 'Grease' Sing-Along

    WENN

The ‘Hamilton’ creators and many other Broadway stars are furious at the TV bosses for filling the vacant slot left by the 2020 Tony Awards with a sing-along viewing.
    May 18, 2020
AceShowbiz – Broadway stars are furious after U.S. network bosses decided to replace the annual Tony Awards ceremony broadcast with a sing-along viewing of movie musical “Grease”.
Chiefs at CBS announced that the classic 1978 musical, starring John Travolta and Olivia Newton-John, will fill the June 7, 2020 time slot vacated by the 2020 Tony Awards due to the coronavirus pandemic.
However, the decision has been slammed by Broadway stars, who took to Twitter to express their disappointment over the move.
Gideon Glick of “To Kill a Mockingbird” tweeted, “I’m certain there are a million gays out there who could help you curate a greatest hits of the Tony Awards to air instead!”
“(Not) a retrospective of past great Tony performances and speeches and moments? Or something highlighting the amazing work that people in theatre do for their community? Or literally anything other than this?” “Frozen” star Patti Murin mused of the network’s move.
Lyricist Benj Pasek, “Hamilton” ‘s Lin-Manuel Miranda, and “Wicked” star Andy Mientus also took to the platform to object to the broadcast.
Since New York government officials announced a ban on gatherings over 500 on March 12, 2020, Broadway has remained shut, marking the longest hiatus in its history. The Great White Way will remain dark until at least September 2020.
“The Grease” sing-along will air on CBS on 7 June at 8.30 P.M. ET.

Marilyn Monroe's Movie 'Some Like It Hot' Heading to Broadway

    Mirisch Company

The classic 1959 movie starring the late Hollywood movie icon is set to to be adapted into a new stage musical for the Great White Way in the Big Apple next year.
    May 18, 2020
AceShowbiz – Movie classic “Some Like It Hot” is heading to Broadway as a new musical.
The 1959 comedy, starring Marilyn Monroe, Tony Curtis, and Jack Lemmon, has been adapted for the stage by “The Inheritance” ‘s Matthew Lopez, with music and lyrics from Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman, the duo who created the tunes for TV series “Smash” and the hit Broadway production of “Hairspray!”.
The show had previously been in development for a spring, 2021 debut in Chicago, Illinois, but the project will now head straight to the Great White Way next year, with “The Book of Mormon” ‘s Casey Nicholaw onboard as director and choreographer.
Casting details have yet to be revealed.
The Billy Wilder movie, about two musicians who dress in drag to escape the clutches of the mafia, previously inspired the hit musical “Sugar”, which opened on Broadway in 1972.
The news of the “Some Like It Hot” adaptation emerges as the Big Apple’s famed theatre district remains shuttered due to the coronavirus pandemic. Broadway venues will stay closed throughout the summer, at least until America’s Labor Day holiday in early September 2020.

'Protective' Julie Andrews to Executive Produce Remake of Late Husband's Movie '10'

    Warner Bros.

The ‘Sound of Music’ actress will be involved as an executive producer for the upcoming remake of Blake Edwards’ classic movie because she feels ‘rather protective’ about it.
    May 18, 2020
AceShowbiz – Julie Andrews will step behind the camera to executive produce a remake of her late husband Blake Edwards’ hit 1979 movie “10”.
The 84-year-old actress will work on the new version of the film, a Hollywood composer going through a mid-life crisis who becomes infatuated with a newly married woman, which she starred in alongside Dudley Moore and Bo Derek.
The new version will take a comedic look at the question of what defines a “perfect 10” in today’s world, reported Deadline.
Karen McCullah and Kirsten ‘Kiwi’ Smith will write the script, with Sue Kroll, Jeff Nathanson, and Ashok Amritraj also producing.
“10 holds a special place in my heart. It captures Blake’s charisma and his special humor that I so adore,” Julie shared in a statement.
“I have long been rather protective about which of Blake’s brilliant works should be re-imagined. I am pleased that today’s film goers will have an opportunity to enjoy a new interpretation of this classic.”
Further details surrounding the production remain unknown.

Rod Stewart Would Love to See Rhys Ifans Play Him in Biopic

    WENN

The ‘Maggie May’ singer says the actor who once dated his daughter will be a perfect choice to play him if a movie about his life and career is ever being made.
    May 17, 2020
AceShowbiz – Rod Stewart wants his daughter Kimberly’s ex, actor Rhys Ifans, to play him in his own biopic.
The British rocker is keen on seeing his life depicted in celluloid after witnessing the success of movies about fellow ’70s stars Elton John and Freddie Mercury.
And if a film does make it to the big screen, the “Maggie May” hitmaker, 75 believes Rhys, 52, who had an on-off relationship with Kimberly, 40, more than a decade ago, would be perfect for the role – so long as he has the right haircut.
“Rhys would be a very good idea. (But) he has got to do something with his barnet (hair),” Rod tells BBC Radio 2.
The musician also floated the idea of his son Alastair, 14, playing him in younger scenes due to having a “remarkable similarity” in their looks.
Speaking about his hopes for a biopic, Rod adds, “If it does not happen it does not matter but I would be flattered if it did. But I tell you what, the Freddie Mercury one was so good. It was rock and roll. It would be hard to get something better than that but I would give it a shot.”
The rock legend is also desperate to get back on the road when the Covid-19 crisis passes.
“I miss work. I am itching to get back,” he says. “I keep in contact with the band and they keep saying, ‘See you at the soundcheck.’ But we don’t know when that is going to be.”
