    Andra Day Can't Wait to Celebrate Oscar Nomination With Her Co-Stars

    The ‘United States vs. Billie Holiday’ actress reveals director Lee Daniels was the first person she called as soon as she learned she’s nominated for Best Actress.

    Andra Day wasted no time in calling “The United States vs. Billie Holiday” director Lee Daniels after learning she’d been nominated for an Oscar for her role in the film.

    The singer and screen star is up for the Best Actress gong at the ceremony, but has some tough competition from Viola Davis, Carey Mulligan, Frances McDormand, and Vanessa Kirby.

    Reflecting on the moment she found out she’d been nominated for the prestigious award, Andra told Entertainment Tonight that she called director Lee straight away.

    “The very first person I did have to call was Lee Daniels, obviously,” she said. “He just poured into me in such a powerful way.”

    Andra also couldn’t wait to celebrate the news with her castmates from the film as she added, “I really wanted to talk to my cast because they’re like a second family, a second organ for me.”

    She and fellow nominee Viola Davis have made history with this year’s nominations as it’s the first time two Black screen stars have been nominated for the leading actress prize since Diana Ross and Cicely Tyson in 1973.

    Speaking about the historic nominations, Andra continued, “It matters. I also feel like, as Black women, that it’s been so long that we’ve believed the narrative… that there’s limited space. It has blessed me so much to encounter all these supportive, beautiful, wonderful Black women who feel seen and supported by this film and by Billie’s story.”

    The 93rd Academy Awards takes place 25 April and will be broadcast from multiple locations, including both the Dolby Theatre and Union Station in Los Angeles.

      The biggest night in music this coming weekend will be followed by a star-studded TV special ‘A Grammy Salute to the Sounds of Change’ which will be hosted by Common.

      AceShowbiz – Cynthia Erivo will perform John Lennon’s classic “Imagine” for CBS special “A Grammy Salute to the Sounds of Change”.
      For the special, which will air on 17 March (21), a host of stars will take to the stage, including Gladys Knight – who will be joined by Adam Blackstone, Sheila E., Israel Houghton, and D Smoke to perform Marvin Gaye’s “What’s Going On”.
      John Fogerty will perform “Fortunate Son” and “Weeping in the Promised Land” while other names on the line-up include Yolanda Adams, Leon Bridges, Eric Church, Andra Day, Patti LaBelle, Terrace Martin, Brad Paisley, Billy Porter, LeAnn Rimes, Chris Stapleton, and Emily, Emilio and Gloria Estefan.
      The two-hour special, hosted by Common, will also share the stories behind the music, as well as highlighting previous iconic Grammy performances.

      In addition to airing on CBS, the show will be available to watch on livestream and on demand via Paramount+.
      Meanwhile, the main Grammy event on March 14 will be made merry by the likes of Billie Eilish, Bruno Mars, Cardi B, Doja Cat, DaBaby, Megan Thee Stallion, Harry Styles, Taylor Swift, and Roddy Ricch.
      Beyonce Knowles leads the nominations with nine mentions. Dua Lipa, Roddy Ricch, and Taylor Swift follow with six nods each.
      Meanwhile, The Weeknd was snubbed despite his stellar 2020, during which he broke chart records with his album “After Hours” and single “Blinding Lights”, which this week chalked up a full year in the Billboard Hot 100 top 10.
      “The Grammys remain corrupt. You owe me, my fans and the industry transparency…,” he slammed the Recording Academy following the nomination announcement.

      AceShowbiz – Andra Day is still recovering from her turn as Billie Holiday after taking a deep dive into the jazz and blues singer’s life.
      A huge fan of the “Strange Fruit” icon, Day won over director Lee Daniels at her audition with passion and landed her first acting role in the process, but she admits her film debut in “The United States vs. Billie Holiday” has taken its toll on her.
      “There’s still a lot that I am working out in me from playing Billie,” Andra explains in an interview obtained by Just Jared. “She gets in, you know what I mean? She gets ahold.”

      “It was a commitment. I think it’s one I’m recovering from still. I’d never smoked cigarettes before. Just starting out smoking, I was practising with my acting coach… I was like, ‘I want some of your American Spirits.’ That first day I was drinking vodka and smoking cigarettes, and I went home and threw up, like, five times!”
      And that smoking habit has stuck with the singer, who explains, “I finished the last pick-up shots last year, but what I expected to be a four, five, or six-month habit ended up turning into about a year and a half.”
      Day also “drank a lot of gin and bourbon” to get into the spirit of Billie, who died of complications from cirrhosis caused by alcohol abuse.
      “I hadn’t drank in so long, and it was never really a big part of my life, even when I did when I was younger,” she adds.
