    Santa Barbara Film Festival 2021 to Screen Movies for Free in Beachside Drive-In Theaters

    The 36th annual event, which runs from March 31 to April 10, will screen over 80 movies and salute the likes of Bill Murray, Sacha Baron Cohen, Delroy Lindo and Amanda Seyfried.

    AceShowbiz – Santa Barbara International Film Festival bosses are planning to beat the COVID blues by planning a series of free virtual and drive-in events to mark this year’s (2021) spectacular.
    Festival planners will build two beachside drive-in theatres, where they will screen over 80 movies as part of the 36th annual event, which runs from March 31 to April 10.
    Bill Murray, Sacha Baron Cohen, Delroy Lindo and Amanda Seyfried will be among the stars saluted at this year’s event, while Riz Ahmed, Maria Bakalova, Kingsley Ben-Adir, Andra Day, Vanessa Kirby and Zendaya Coleman will be among those feted during the festival’s Virtuosos evening.
    SBIFF programmers have received a record number of film submissions this year, and the festival will feature 100 movies, some of them world premieres. In addition to the drive-ins, SBIFF is offering a ticketed virtual component, featuring online film screenings, Q&As with the filmmakers, industry panels and celebrity tributes.

    The film line-up and schedule will be announced in early March.
    “We have poured all of our creativity into this plan and are very proud of the shape it is taking,” SBIFF’s executive director Roger Durling tells Deadline. “It’s imperative we bring a sense of hopefulness to 2021, but in the safest way possible. A virtual component was a given but experiencing movies in socially distanced cars and being by the ocean felt oh so perfectly Santa Barbara, California.”

    Lupita Nyong’o, Adam Driver, Scarlett Johansson and Renee Zellweger were among honorees at last year’s event.

      The 1993 feature film about the same day happening over and over again is being adapted for the small screen with at least one of its original stars returning.

      AceShowbiz – Classic comedy film “Groundhog Day” will be rehashed in a new TV series.
      The beloved 1993 movie starring Bill Murray and Andie MacDowell about the same day happening over and over again, is now being developed for the small screen, according to Stephen Toblowsky, who played insurance agent Ned Ryerson in the original.
      “There’s talk about a Groundhog Day series in the works,” he told The Production Meeting Podcast on Thursday (02Jul20).
      Stephen has already accepted his old role in the new show, which will be set 30 years after the original film, noting he only learned about the project by happenstance.
      “One of the producers – I was working on The Goldbergs (series) or (the spin-off series) Schooled, one of those shows over on the Sony (studio) lot, and one of the producers saw me and goes, ‘Oh, Stephen! Stephen! We’re working on a Groundhog Day TV show. Could you be Ned for the TV show?,’ ” he recalled. “I go, ‘Sure. Yeah. No problem.’ But it’s Ned thirty years later. What has his life become?”
      It has not yet been confirmed whether Bill Murray or Andie MacDowell will also reprise their roles for the new show.

      The cast members of the original movie are scheduled to get together with the original director for a virtual reunion to raise funds for Equal Justice Initiative.

      AceShowbiz – Josh Gad has scared up the stars of the original “Ghostbusters” movie to take part in his latest YouTube reunion show.
      After bringing the casts of “The Lord of the Rings”, “The Goonies”, “Splash”, and “Back to the Future” back together for his Reunited Apart virtual chats, the “Frozen” star has recruited Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, Annie Potts, Ernie Hudson, and Sigourney Weaver for the latest instalment.
      The quartet agreed to appear after hearing Jason Reitman, the director of the latest “Ghostbusters” film, and his father Ivan, the original director, were taking part.
      Donations for the show, which will air on YouTube on Monday, June 15, 2020 at 12 P.M. ET, will benefit the Equal Justice Initiative. The reunion will be available on Gad’s YouTube channel.

      Meanwhile, during a recent appearance on “The Kelly Clarkson Show”, Gad revealed he’s trying to reunite the casts of “Coming to America” and “The Princess Bride”.
