Ryan Coogler Refuses to Pull 'Black Panther 2' Out of Georgia Over Repressive Voting Laws

    WENN

The Marvel director defends himself for continuing the production of the ‘Black Panther’ sequel in Georgia as some Hollywood projects were pulled out of the state due to new voting laws.

    Apr 17, 2021

    AceShowbiz –
Filmmaker Ryan Coogler has stunned civil rights activists by announcing he won’t be pulling the “Black Panther” sequel out of Georgia.

Producers and directors of several projects have opted not to shoot in the state following the passage of repressive new election laws, which restrict the rights of African-Americans in particular, but Coogler has announced he won’t be relocating because the decision will directly affect crew members in Georgia.

A statement from the moviemaker reads, “The fight for full enfranchisement is fundamental to the African-American struggle in this country and to this country’s claim to functioning democracy. As an African-American, and as a citizen, I oppose all attempts, explicit and otherwise, to shrink the electorate and reduce access to the ballot.”

“I say this as I return to Georgia, a state that holds a special place in my heart. I lived in Atlanta for eight months while filming my last movie. I have long looked forward to returning. But, when I was informed of the passage of SB202 in the state, and its ramifications for the state’s voters, I was profoundly disappointed.”

“While I wished to turn my concern into action, I could not do so without first being educated on the specifics of Georgia. Having now spoken with voting rights activists in the state, I have come to understand that many of the people employed by my film, including all the local vendors and businesses we engage, are the very same people who will bear the brunt of SB202. For those reasons, I will not be engaging in a boycott of Georgia.”

“What I will be doing is using my voice to emphasize the effects of SB202, it’s shameful roots in Jim Crow (sic), and doing all I can to support organizations fighting voter suppression here in the state.”

Ryan Coogler Finds It Incredibly Hard to Make 'Black Panther 2' Without Chadwick Boseman

    WENN

The ‘Creed’ directors says developing the sequel to ‘Black Panther’ without the late T’Challa depicter is ‘the hardest thing’ he’s had to do as he returns behind the lens for the second installment.

    Mar 12, 2021
AceShowbiz – Ryan Coogler has admitted making the “Black Panther” sequel without Chadwick Boseman is the “hardest thing.”
The 34-year-old director is working on a follow-up to the 2018 Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) film but admits that he is still trying to come to terms with the loss of lead actor Chadwick, who passed away last August aged 43 after a private cancer battle.
Ryan said, “I’m still currently going through it.”
“One thing that I’ve learned in my short time on this Earth is that it’s very difficult to have perspective on something while you’re going through it. This is one of the more profound things that I’ve gone through in my life, having to be a part of keeping this project going without this particular person who is like the glue who held it together.”
The “Creed” filmmaker explained that he has been trying to find a “balance” between his personal and professional life since Chadwick’s passing.

Ryan told the “Jemele Hill Is Unbothered” podcast, “That said, you have a professional life, you’ve got a personal life. Personal life, I’m going to say when you work in something that you love, those things blend, they come together.”
“I’m trying to find a work-life balance. But I’m not there yet, so this is without question the hardest thing I’ve had to do in my professional life.”
Ryan explained that, while the loss of Chadwick “stings,” it has left him “incredibly motivated” that he got to spend time with the “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom” star.
He said, “This one hurts and stings, but it’s also incredibly motivating.”
“I’m incredibly sad to lose him but I’m also incredibly motivated that I got to spend time with him. You spend your life hearing about people like him. For this individual, who is an ancestor now, I was there for it. It’s such an incredible privilege that fills you up as much as it knocks you out.”

Daniel Kaluuya Unsure If He Will Be Back for 'Black Panther 2'

    Walt Disney Pictures

The ‘Get Out’ actor says he still hasn’t signed on for the upcoming ‘Black Panther’ sequel which is expected to retire the titular character played by the late Chadwick Boseman.

    Feb 23, 2021
AceShowbiz – Daniel Kaluuya is uncertain about whether he will appear in the “Black Panther” sequel.
The 31-year-old actor played the role of W’Kabi in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) blockbuster – the best friend of the late Chadwick Boseman’s titular hero T’Challa – and is satisfied to do “whatever the story needs” in Ryan Coogler’s project.
Asked about a role in the sequel, Daniel told journalist Jemele Hill on her podcast “Jemele Hill Is Unbothered”, “I have no idea. I speak to Ryan, I’m not gonna go, ‘Yo (put me in the movie).’ He’s living his life and working hard.”
“Whatever the story needs, you know? That (first movie) was a moment for us, and I don’t want to go like, ‘I’m trying to be in it just because I want it.’ It’s for us, I’m a fan.”

He added to Jemele Hill, “I’m that kind of person if the story and the piece is better without me, I’m like, ‘Yo, I’m gonna watch this’, because I really wanna watch it. And if I’m in it and I’m able to serve it, then I’m in it. And I just stay in that position.”
Daniel also admits the absence of Chadwick – who tragically passed away from cancer in August 2020 – is “going to be a huge loss” for the movie.
The “Get Out” star explained, “He was the centre. He was the glue. It’s going to be a huge loss. That’s going to be felt, you know?”
“But I feel the way, when I’ve spoken to people part of the cast and the energy and the character of everyone, everyone is ready to honour what he gave in that moment. We can’t even put our head around what he gave in that moment, to us and to everyone. So I feel everyone’s ready to honour him and suit up, but the loss is unquantifiable.”

'Black Panther 2' to Explore Other Characters and Different Subcultures

    Walt Disney Pictures

According to Marvel boss Kevin Feige, the upcoming second ‘Black Panther’ movie will focus on other characters while also honoring and respecting Chadwick Boseman’s legacy.

    Jan 12, 2021
AceShowbiz – Kevin Feige has insisted “Black Panther 2” “always” intended to focus on other characters.
The Marvel Studios boss confirmed the upcoming sequel will not feature CGI footage of the late Chadwick Boseman – who died of cancer last August (20) – nor would his role as T’Challa be recast, but stressed that the focus on the film was never intended to be on his character.
“So much of the comics and that first movie is the world of Wakanda,” he told Deadline. “Wakanda is a place to further explore with characters and different subcultures. This was always and initially the primary focus of the next story. We’re not going to have a CG Chadwick and we’re not recasting T’Challa.”

Kevin went on to praise writer-and-director Ryan Coogler for his “genius” work and, while the late actor won’t feature in the movie, he promised the film will also “honour and respect” Chadwick’s legacy.
“Ryan Coogler is working very hard right now on the script with all the respect and love and genius that he has, which gives us great solace, so it was always about furthering the mythology and the inspiration of Wakanda,” he continued. “There’s also the task of honouring and respecting the ongoing learnings and teachings from Chad as well.”
The sequel will see the return of familiar faces like Danai Gurira, Martin Freeman, and Letitia Wright.
Other details of the project are still scarce, but words ran rampant on the internet that Marvel considered passing the torch to M’Baku who’s played by Winston Duke in the first film. The warrior protested T’Challa being the new king in the 2018 movie.

Marvel May Pass the Baton to M'Baku in 'Black Panther' Sequel

    Marvel Studios

The studio, which has been actively working on the sequel following the sudden passing of Chadwick Boseman, is reportedly considering to make the Jabari Tribe’s leader the new Black Panther.

    Dec 21, 2020
AceShowbiz – The shift of power in Wakanda is still one of the hot topics among MCU fans following the untimely passing of “Black Panther” lead star Chadwick Boseman. According to the latest report, Marvel is now considering to pass the torch to M’Baku (Winston Duke) in the upcoming sequel.
Twitter influencer and writer Daniel Richtman was allegedly the first to come up with the news of M’Baku potentially becoming the new central figure in “Black Panther 2”. Richtman said, per We Got This Covered, “Marvel thinking of making M’Baku Black Panther now.”
Prior to this, there were rambling rumors that T’Challa’s sister Shuri (Letitia Wright) was to have a more prominent role in the upcoming feature, with many assuming she’s the best option to become the new protector of Wakanda. However, Marvel may have had a change of heart as Richtman allegedly noted, “Shuri may not get it anymore or it could be both of them for this one movie or one or the other, they are undecided.”

It’s unclear why Marvel starts considering to make M’Baku as the new Black Panther, but this arrives after Wright came under fire due to her anti-vaccine stance. Earlier this month, the actress posted a controversial video from the On The Table channel, in which host Tomi Arayomi cast doubt on the COVID-19 treatment.
She initially defended her decision to post the YouTube clip, responding to the backlash, “if you don’t conform to popular opinions. but ask questions and think for yourself … you get cancelled.” She later clarified, “My intention was not to hurt anyone, my ONLY intention of posting the video was it raised my concerns with what the vaccine contains and what we are putting in our bodies. Nothing else.”
Despite her explanation, Wright continued to receive a storm of criticism, including from her own Marvel co-star Don Cheadle, who blasted the video’s message as “hot garbage.” The actress later deleted the video in question before deactivating her social media accounts after landing in hot water.

Neither Marvel nor Rihanna has responded to the casting speculation, but E! News has shut down the rumors. According to the site, the “Umbrella” hitmaker has not been cast in the upcoming film.
“Black Panther 2” is reportedly set to start filming in Atlanta in July and last for upwards of six months. While Michael B. Wright’s Shuri is said to have a more prominent role in the upcoming feature following the death of Chadwick Boseman, who took on the lead role in the first movie. Additionally, “Narcos: Mexico” actor Tenoch Huerta is reportedly in talks to play one of the antagonists.

'Black Panther' Sequel Gets Start Date, Finds Its Villain

    Walt Disney Pictures/WENN/Brian To

Words are ‘Narcos: Mexico’ actor Tenoch Huerta is in talks to play one of the antagonists, while Letitia Wright’s Shuri may have a bigger role in the wake of Chadwick Boseman’s death.

    Nov 21, 2020
AceShowbiz – Marvel Studio is moving forward with its “Black Panther” sequel following the untimely passing of its supposed lead actor Chadwick Boseman. The follow-up to the 2018 movie is reportedly slated to start filming in Atlanta in July and last for upwards of six months.
According to multiple source who provided the info to The Hollywood Reporter, Letitia Wright, Lupita Nyong’o, Winston Duke and Angela Bassett are all expected to reprise their roles for the sequel. Wright’s Shuri is also said to have a more prominent role in the upcoming feature.
Besides those returning actors, the project is about to add a new cast member, with Mexican actor Tenoch Huerta reportedly in talks to play one of the antagonists. The 39-year-old actor appeared in Cary Joji Fukunaga’s 2009 film “Sin Nombre” and is currently starring on Netflix’s crime drama series “Narcos: Mexico”.
“Black Panther 2” was initially hoped to kick off production in March 2021 with Ryan Coogler returning as director. However, the project was sidelined as the filmmaker and Marvel tried to navigate grief over the unexpected death of Boseman in August.

“We’re just still mourning Chad, so it’s not something I even want to think about,” Wright told Porter magazine in an interview for its October issue, revealing she’s not even sure there is a “Black Panther” franchise without Boseman. “The thought of doing it without him is kinda strange,” she added. “We’re just grieving at the moment, so it’s trying to find the light in the midst of it.”
Marvel has not revealed how it would handle Boseman’s absence in the sequel, but Marvel’s Executive Vice President Victoria Alonso has ruled out using CGI to replace the late actor. “No. There’s only one Chadwick and he’s not with us,” she told Argentinian newspaper Clarin when asked about the prospect of a digital recreation of the star.
“Our king, unfortunately, has died in real life, not just in fiction, and we are taking a little time to see how we return to the story and what we do to honor this chapter of what has happened to us that was so unexpected, so painful, so terrible, really,” she stated.
Alonso explained, “Because Chadwick was not only a wonder of a human being every day for the five years that we spent together. But it also seems to me that as a character what he did elevated us as a company and has left his moment in history.”

The upcoming ‘Black Panther’ sequel will not feature a digital version of the late actor as Marvel is taking a little time to see how they are going to honor the star.

    Nov 16, 2020
AceShowbiz – Chadwick Boseman won’t feature in the forthcoming “Black Panther” sequel, Marvel officials have confirmed.
The late actor starred as the titular King T’Challa in the hit 2018 flick and had been due to reprise the role before his death following a private struggle with colon cancer earlier this year (20), aged 43.
Speaking to the Argentinian newspaper Clarin, as reported by The Wrap, Marvel’s Victoria Alonso affirmed, “No. There’s only one Chadwick and he’s not with us,” when asked about the prospect of a digital recreation of the star.
“Our king, unfortunately, has died in real life, not just in fiction, and we are taking a little time to see how we return to the story and what we do to honour this chapter of what has happened to us that was so unexpected, so painful, so terrible, really,” she stated.

“Because Chadwick was not only a wonder of a human being every day for the five years that we spent together,” added Alonso. “But it also seems to me that as a character what he did elevated us as a company and has left his moment in history.”
Boseman made his debut as the Black Panther in 2016’s “Captain America: Civil War”, and went on to reprise the role in “Black Panther”, “Avengers: Infinity War”, and 2019’s “Avengers: Endgame”.
“We have to think carefully about what we are going to do and how and think about how we are going to honour the franchise,” Alonso mused.
“Black Panther 2”, starring Danai Gurira, Martin Freeman, and Letitia Wright, has a May, 2022 release date.
