Cannes Film Festival to Explore All Possibilities for Its 2020 Edition After Axing June-July Plans

Organizers vow to support the year of Cinema in a way or another although they have accepted that it will be difficult to hold the 73rd International Cannes Film Festival in its original form.
    Apr 15, 2020
AceShowbiz – Cannes Film Festival bosses are committed to staging an event to mark 2020 once the coronavirus restrictions have been relaxed, but they insist any gathering will not look like the typical South of France celebration.
The May event was rescheduled to late June, and then the beginning of July, but now festival chiefs accept Cannes is unlikely to go ahead “in its original form”.
“We acknowledged that the postponement of the 73rd International Cannes Film Festival, initially considered for the end of June to the beginning of July, is no longer an option,” a festival statement reads. “It is clearly difficult to assume that the Festival de Cannes could be held this year in its original form.”
“Nevertheless, since yesterday evening we have started many discussions with professionals, in France and abroad. They agree that the Festival de Cannes, an essential pillar for the film industry, must explore all contingencies allowing to support the year of Cinema by making Cannes 2020 real, in a way or another…”
“Each and everyone knows that many uncertainties are still reigning over the international health situation. We hope to be able to communicate promptly regarding the shapes that this Cannes 2020 will take.”
On Monday, April 13, French President Emmanuel Macron ruled all festivals or events with large gatherings would be cancelled until at least mid-July. All public gathering spaces, including cinemas, restaurants and bars will remain closed until further notice.
His decision comes as the COVID-19 death toll in France passes 10,000.

Cannes Film Festival Committee 'Optimistic' Coronavirus Will Wind Down by April

Insisting they were ‘not oblivious’ over the epidemic, president Pierre Lescure assures that the 2020 edition will be canceled if the situation does not improve in the weeks to come.
    Mar 12, 2020
AceShowbiz – Cannes Film Festival President Pierre Lescure has admitted the annual event will be cancelled if the coronavirus situation does not improve in France by April.
Bosses at the festival recently assured that everyone involved was “currently working on the organisation of the event” but, speaking to French publication Le Figaro, Lescure insisted they were “not oblivious” and that if the situation doesn’t improve, they will cancel this edition.
However, he added the committee was “reasonably optimistic in the hope that the peak of the epidemic will be reached at the end of March and that we will breathe a little better in April.”
He also responded to a media report yesterday claiming the festival had surprisingly declined an insurance policy to cover itself for epidemics a couple of weeks ago, which was offered to organisers by firm Circle Group.
“This offer was made to us about ten days ago, but it was totally disproportionate,” he said. “We were only offered to cover ourselves up to $2.3 million (£1.8 million) while our budget is $36 million (£27.9 million). It was really peanuts. The company was clearly playing the bounty hunters and we of course declined this proposal.”
Although the festival will not be covered in the instance of a cancellation, Lescure said the event has an endowment fund that will allow it to survive skipping an edition, if necessary.
