    Missy Elliott, Pop World Builder, Brings a Hip-Hop Fantasia to Brooklyn

    For her first headlining tour in an innovative three-decade career, Elliott unleashed a relentless and exhilarating display of theatrical and visual ambition.It’s nearly impossible to fathom that until this summer, almost three decades into her career, Missy Elliott had never headlined an arena tour. One of the most influential hip-hop and pop performers, songwriters and producers of all time, she built a career on hyperreal imagery and music that suggested an intergalactic, quirky, sensual future that even now feels fanciful and far-off.And judging by the performance Elliott, 53, delivered at Barclays Center in Brooklyn on Monday night, it would have been impossible to ascertain that she’d never toured at this level before. The deftness and imagination on display suggested a performer with a hyperdeveloped sense of image-making, a bone-deep understanding of her catalog, and a desire to make up for lost time and opportunity.The tour, titled Out of This World — the Missy Elliott Experience, was a taut, relentless and exhilarating 75 minutes full of theatrical and visual ambition. At times, it had the complexity and density of recent peak pop spectacles, like Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour, or the Weeknd’s 2021 Super Bowl halftime show. But it was also kin to the films of Baz Luhrmann, Greta Gerwig’s “Barbie,” “RuPaul’s Drag Race,” the opening ceremony of the Paris Olympics — events in which precision, creativity and absurdism comfortably coexist, and actually rely upon each other.The show was less a conventional concert than a dynamic carnivalesque D.J. set of strung-together Elliott smashes (her own, mainly, but at one point late in the night, some which she wrote or produced for others, like Aaliyah). It presented as one grand adventure — the front-loaded section of hits like “Sock It 2 Me,” “I’m Really Hot” and “The Rain (Supa Dupa Fly)” (which was preceded by a quizzical nod to “Singin’ in the Rain”) wasn’t much more distinctive than the mid-show run of sex romps “Get Ur Freak On,” “One Minute Man” and “Hot Boyz.” And neither of those sections was more commanding than the sometimes choppy closing run, peppered with laser-beam bouncers like “Work It” and “Lose Control.” The less effective songs sprinkled throughout worked as accent pieces, but also at times undermined the potency of her biggest hits.But Elliott was trying to make a point: Like all the most memorable and durable pop heroes, she has built a worldview much bigger than any one of her songs.We are having trouble retrieving the article content.Please enable JavaScript in your browser settings.Thank you for your patience while we verify access.       Singer Ciara and her sports star husband Russell Wilson are promoting COVID-19 vaccinations in a U.S. TV special featuring the likes of Jennifer Lopez, Matthew McConaughey, and Lin-Manuel Miranda.

      The celebrity couple will host “Roll Up Your Sleeves” on Sunday night, April 18, with the hour-long show designed to “educate viewers, raise awareness and dispel concerns surrounding the COVID-19 vaccines,” according to organizers.

      The star-studded event also aims to “inform and encourage those who have vaccination concerns to learn the facts.”

      U.S. President Joe Biden, former leader Barack Obama and his First Lady Michelle will all be making appearances, as will COVID czar Dr. Anthony Fauci, who will be interviewed by McConaughey on the show.

      Other celebrities in the line-up include Billy Crystal, Demi Lovato, Eva Longoria, Faith Hill, Jennifer Hudson, Sterling K. Brown, Wanda Sykes, Ken Jeong, Shaquille O’Neal, and Charles Barkley.

      The hour-long special will be produced by ATTN: About it, the Los Angeles-based media company’s co-founder Matthew Segal said, “The ability to get people back to work and kids back in school, getting us reunited with family and friends and attending concerts, sporting events and many other activities we hold dear is contingent upon people getting vaccinated.”

      Matthew added, “At ATTN: we believe in the power of entertainment to inform audiences, and we’re thrilled to partner with NBC, Civic Nation, Walgreens and many great public figures and performers to get out this critical message.”

      To date, there have been more than 31 million positive cases of COVID-19 across the nation since the pandemic began, with over 560,000 deaths, while more than 66 million Americans – an estimated 20 per cent of the population – have been fully vaccinated so far.

Their plans for a Vegas-style residency at the Coliseo de Puerto Rico this month were, of course, scrapped. Instead, Yandel will offer fans this free virtual concert, broadcast live from Miami.       AceShowbiz – Ciara almost lost her hit breakout song “Goodies” to Britney Spears.
      The singer released the dance floor anthem in 2004 as her debut single and was shocked to learn the tune was being shopped to the “Toxic” hitmaker behind her back after she thought she had won the rights to sing the track.
      “I had to reaudition again, to be picked up and to be made a priority on the (Jive Records) label,” Ciara recalled on her programme “Level Up Radio” with Apple Music. “I did that, had a showcase, rocked it. OK, boom, check.”
      “Not knowing that behind the scenes, there was a conversation about this song being potentially taken from me and given to an artist like Britney Spears, who was on the same roster as me.”
      “Goodies” went on to become an international hit, earning Ciara prestige and worldwide stardom, and the star admits she would have “fought tooth and nail” for the track if she knew her label bosses entertained handing it over to another artist.
      “I knew that it was a very, very special record,” Ciara said, noting she was “heavily involved” in writing the song behind the scenes. “It was because it’s a record that I actually was a part of creating.”
      And the star feels forever grateful for the track.
      “This was my very first song that I put out into the universe,” Ciara smiled. “My first song, and by God’s grace, it also was a number one song, and it lasted on the Billboard charts for eight weeks. It was just kind of surreal to see that my dream was coming true.”

      AceShowbiz – New mum Ciara had the cast and crew of her “Rooted” video on high alert during filming as the R&B star was just two days away from giving birth.
      The “Level Up” hitmaker welcomed son Win with husband Russell Wilson on 23 July (20), but just 48 hours earlier, she had been singing and dancing around on set, showing off her heavily pregnant belly.
      Ciara, who was raised in Atlanta, Georgia, dropped the promo early on Thursday (13Aug20) and took to social media to share the surprising news with fans.
      “ATL bred I’m #Rooted,” the 34 year old wrote as she recited a line of lyrics, adding, “Shot this video 2 days before delivery, Covid style! Out now!”

      The song serves as a message of empowerment to the black community, and the accompanying video features a closing message to young activists amid the Black Lives Matter movement.
      Referencing civil rights leaders Rosa Parks and Martin Luther King, Jr., it reads, “To all my young Rosa’s and young Luther’s (sic), keep marching. Don’t stop fighting for what you believe in.”
      “To all my Black queens and kings, continue to plant and spread seeds of love, hope and pride in your tribe. Everything you need to survive and thrive is rooted in you. Stay rooted.”
      The promo also includes brief cameos by Ciara’s six-year-old son Future Zahir, from her romance with her ex-fiance, rapper Future, and her three-year-old daughter Sienna, whose father is American football star Wilson.
      Following “Rooted” launch, proud husband Wilson posted a gushing note to his wife on Twitter, praising her strength and work ethic.
      “Love you @Ciara,” he began. “What you mean to not only me and the kids but people from all over the world. The fact that you shot this amazing video only a few days before delivering Baby Win shows why you are the best in the world. Stay #Rooted.”
      The couple wed in 2016.
