Eddie Murphy Says His Idea for 'Coming to America 3' Will Work When He Turns 75

    Amazon Prime Video

The former ‘Saturday Night Life’ regular has already had an idea for the third movie shortly after the second ‘Coming to America’ installment was released.

    Mar 7, 2021
AceShowbiz – Eddie Murphy has plans for “Coming to America 3” – but his idea won’t work until he turns 75.
The star, whose sequel to 1988 cult comedy “Coming to America”, was released on Friday (05Mar20), never planned to make a second film in the series, but now he’s thinking about a third film, but fans will have to wait a while.
“We never thought we were going to do a (Coming to America) sequel…,” he tells “Live with Kelly and Ryan”. “Of all the movies that I’ve done, Coming To America became a kind of cult movie and they show it all the time on TV. It’s always on and at Halloween some people get dressed up as characters from the movie.”

He can’t believe there’s even a restaurant in Los Angeles that “turns itself into a McDowell’s at Halloween” – a tribute to the funny McDonald’s knock-off burger chain that appears in the film.
“They have, like, sexual chocolate milkshakes on their menu, so this movie is like a cult picture. It was maybe 25 years in, I thought, ‘If I could figure out a way to connect these dots, there’s an audience for a sequel…’ – and here we are.”
Eddie, who turns 60 next month (Apr21), has already mapped out the next sequel, and while it may not take 33 years to make the next follow-up, it won’t be arriving any time soon.
“There’s an idea for a Coming to America 3 that I have, but it doesn’t happen for 16 years,” he smiles. “I have to be 75 to do it. And not make me up like (I look) 75, but really be 75.”

Eddie Murphy Says 'Terminator' Inspired Him to Make 'Coming 2 America'

    Amazon Studios/Paramount Pictures

‘The Nutty Professor’ star recalls how he got an idea for the sequel to his 1988 comedy after watching Arnold Schwarzenegger de-age in a scene in the ‘Terminator’ movie.

    Mar 5, 2021
AceShowbiz – As unlikely as it sounds, “Coming 2 America” was partly inspired by a “Terminator” movie. Ahead of the release of the comedy sequel, Eddie Murphy has revealed how he got an idea for the follow-up to 1988’s “Coming to America” after watching Arnold Schwarzenegger de-age in a scene in one of the movies from the sci-fi action film franchise around six years ago.
“You know what happened, I was watching, one of those ‘Terminator’ movies with Schwarzenegger and they used the special effect where they made him really young,” Murphy tells Yahoo Entertainment. “I was like, ‘If they did that, we could do a scene where we’re young’ … and that was the piece that made it all sort of fall into place.” The comedian was likely referring to 2016’s “Terminator: Genisys”.
Prior to that, Murphy never thought about making a sequel to “Coming to America” despite fans’ wish for one. “When we finished the original ‘Coming to America’, it ended on ‘they live happily ever after,’ so we never thought about doing a sequel,” he admits. “You know, usually sequels come a year or after the original movie, so we never thought about it.”

“But then ‘Coming to America’ became part of the culture, and little lines from the movie, and catchphrases like ‘Sexual Chocolate’ [took off], and people dress up as the characters [for Halloween]. It just stayed around,” he explains how the movie stays relevant after more than 30 years.
“Coming 2 America” did use CGI for a scene that features de-aged Murphy and Arsenio Hall. The said scene is a flashback to the time Akeem and Semmi visited a club in search of a bride-to-be for the former. There, they met the overzealous Mary Junson (Leslie Jones), who introduced Akeem to weed shortly before their one-night stand.
The CGI apart, Murphy and Hall still had to spend hours in the makeup chairs to reprise their other characters, including the barbershop’s Morris, Saul and Clarence, the Rev. Brown and fan-favorite Randy Watson. “It’s the same exact long, drawn-out, five hours in the makeup process,” Murphy says of the transformation process. “That didn’t get any easier.”
“Coming 2 America” is now available for stream on Amazon Prime Video.

Eddie Murphy and Arsenio Hall Receive Warm Welcome in First 'Coming 2 America' Trailer

    [embedded content]

The two actors reprise their roles as Prince Akeem Joffer and his aide Semmi, who travel back to America to find Akeem’s son he never knew he has in the ‘Coming to America’ sequel.

    Dec 23, 2020
AceShowbiz – Eddie Murphy and Arsenio Hall are back in regal glory in the first official trailer of “Coming 2 America”. After teased with the first-look photo released last week, glimpses of footage in the new film are made available online for viewing pleasure through the sneak-peek video.
Murphy’s Prince Akeem Joffer and Hall’s Semmi, Akeem’s best friend and aide, are still at the center of the story. Set years after the first film, the plot finds Akeem realizing that he fathers a child he never knew he has.
Akeem is set to become King of Zamunda when he discovers he has a son he never knew about in America – a street savvy Queens native named Lavelle (Jermaine Fowler). Honoring his royal father’s (James Earl Jones) dying wish to groom this son as the crown prince, since Akeem and Lisa’s (Shari Headley) daughter Meeka Joffer (KiKi Layne) is ineligible to take over the throne because Zamunda law rules that it has to be a male heir to take the throne, Akeem and Semmi set off to America once again.

The trailer, set to “Feel Right” by rapper Mystikal and Mark Ronson, sees the duo reuniting with the old men in the barber shop, with Murphy and Hall playing them as well. There’s also a look at Tracy Morgan as Lavelle’s uncle Reem, Wesley Snipes as Imani’s older brother General Izzi, Leslie Jones as Lavelle’s mother, and Teyana Taylor as General Izzi’s henchwoman.
Rick Ross and Davido are also set to make cameo appearance in the movie, which is directed by Craig Brewer. Kenya Barris, Barry W. Blaustein and David Sheffield wrote the screenplay based on a story by Blaustein, Sheffield and Justin Kanew.
Originally scheduled to be theatrically released on August 7 of this year, the movie will now debut domestically via Amazon Prime Video on March 5, 2021, excluding countries where Paramount Pictures will handle theatrical distribution.

Eddie Murphy Refuses to Take Josh Gad's Calls for 'Coming 2 America' Reunion

    WENN

Eddie Murphy allegedly rejected the phone calls made by the ‘Frozen’ actor when the latter reached out to bring together the ‘Coming 2 America’ cast members.
    Jun 12, 2020
AceShowbiz – Eddie Murphy has blocked a “Coming 2 America” reunion as part of Josh Gad’s new viral initiative because he won’t return the “Frozen” star’s calls.
Gad has brought the casts of “The Lord of the Rings”, “The Goonies”, “Splash”, and “Back to the Future” together via his Reunited Apart virtual hit but he admits there’s one group of actors he’s failed to regroup.
“I’ve been dying to do the cast of Coming to America but apparently Eddie Murphy does not want to return my calls,” Gad tells “Good Morning America”, revealing he’s also working on a “Ghostbusters” get together and has plans to regroup the stars of “The Princess Bride” and “Beetlejuice”.
“There’s so many that I want to do, but I’m excited about the ones we have in store.”
Ironically, the “Coming to America” cast have been getting together – Murphy and company have been shooting a sequel to the 1988 comedy, in which Eddie played an African royal navigating life in New York as he hunts for an American bride.
