Diplo Learns How to Play Guitar During Coronavirus Lockdown

    WENN

The Major Lazer star reveals he has been spending his days learning how to play guitar while staying at home during the Covid-19 quarantine amid the global pandemic.
    Apr 5, 2020
AceShowbiz – Diplo is using his prolonged period of time indoors during the coronavirus outbreak to finally learn the guitar.
The 41 year old reveals he’s been so busy with his career as a DJ, he hasn’t had so much downtime for almost two decades.
“I haven’t been home this long since I was 24 years old. This is three weeks at my house and I’ve seen parts of my house I never knew existed,” he tells Beats 1’s Zane Lowe.
But the father of two is embracing the break.
“I got to make the best out of what I’m doing and I’m happy,” he adds. “I’m happy to be at home honestly, I never felt like I say that, but I like it (sic).”
In addition to writing new music with electronic trio Major Lazer, he’s been developing new instrumental skills.
“I haven’t been like, writing new music, because I’m still just in the studio finishing up the Major Lazer album,” he shares. “I’m tidying things up, but I’ve been like, playing a lot of guitar and learning that, which is I would never ever, ever do that, unless it’s like literally, someone made me do it (sic).”

Diplo Praises Queer Artists for Changing the Way Music Exists

    Instagram

Fronting the May edition of an LGBTQ+ publication, the ‘Close to Me’ DJ claims that it’s ‘always been the queer community who have to scratch it out of nothing.’
    Mar 28, 2020
AceShowbiz – Diplo has credited queer artists for the evolution of music in recent history.
The DJ and producer, 41, spoke with British LGBTQ+ publication Attitude, where he praised the “fearlessness” of queer artists who have “changed the way music exists.”
“The original guys who were creating hip-hop were queer. House music, Baltimore Club, New Orleans bounce music – every time there’s a genre that falls out of nothing, it’s always been kind of like the queer scene that created that,” he said.
The star, real name Thomas Wesley Pentz, continued, “It’s always been in the underground. It’s like Vogue that Madonna put out, and she’s always shown respect and love, but it’s always been the queer community who have to scratch it out of nothing.”
“I think that’s back to the fearlessness because when you have that energy – the masculine energy, the feminine – you’re taking all the risks because there’s nothing to lose,” the Major Lazer star mused. “I think it might be challenging for some straight men, but for queer artists it’s kind of second nature. They’re able to go wherever they want and, like I said, there’s no walls.”

Diplo appears on the cover of the May edition of the publication with pal and country music star Orville Peck.

Diplo Faults Established EDM Artists for Not Letting Younger Acts Shine

    Billboard

Discussing the difficulties of bringing the ‘underground’ dance scene to mainstream, the ‘Close to Me’ DJ notes that ‘it’s really easy to copy someone’s sound’ in EDM world.
    Mar 13, 2020
AceShowbiz – Diplo is hoping to give up-and-coming electronic dance music (EDM) artists a commercial platform with his Higher Ground record label.
The producer started the project two years ago and is hoping to elevate the “underground” dance scene in the U.S. to new levels of mainstream popularity.
“I’m always looking for a way to make that (underground) sound commercial,” he told Billboard. “For that to make sense in America is kind of a riddle.”
Having worked with EDM acts including Born Dirty, Andhim and Sidepiece, the star understands the difficulties musicians face, as he reflected, “The doors kind of got closed behind Martin Garrix or Marshmello”.
“The old guys aren’t going away. I’m not going away. And it’s really easy to copy someone’s sound,” Diplo, real name Thomas Wesley Pentz, explained. “If I’m producer A, and I hear an underground producer doing something that’s coming up, I’ll just do what he does. EDM doesn’t have rules that you can’t copy people’s sounds because EDM fans don’t care. They’re not there for the prestige of it.”

“So with all these EDM guys, they don’t let the young person that’s doing the cool thing up,” he added.

    Instagram

The Major Lazer member is seen running for cover when gunshots were fired among the crowd during his performance at the street parade in Sao Paulo, Brazil.
    Feb 27, 2020
AceShowbiz – Diplo was forced to flee the stage during his performance at a street party in Sao Paulo, Brazil when two revellers were reportedly shot.
The DJ was rushed to safety after gunshots were fired during one of his sets, which left two people injured during the carnival event on Tuesday, February 25, 2020 afternoon.
A man and a woman were reportedly shot during an attempted theft at the party, which took place as Diplo, real name Thomas Pentz, was about to introduce himself on stage, taking selfies and recording the crowd on his phone.
However, at the moment the gunshots rang out, the Major Lazer star, who was on top of a truck when the shooting happened could be seen ducking for cover at the end of his Instagram post, as security guards rushed into the crowd.

Photographer Amauri Nehn told local news outlet UOL, “Everyone on top of the truck bent down and security guards went to protect Diplo. Someone heard a shot and warned the people who were on top of the truck to duck. When everything calmed down, the security guards removed (Diplo) from the truck.”
He added, “I went to the side of the trio and saw a boy, who was hit in the abdomen, and a girl, who was hit in the leg. I didn’t hear the shots. The sound was loud and a lot of people shouting.”
As a result of the shooting, the rest of the Silk City star’s set and the street party parade were cancelled.
