Dolly Parton's Regret for Jimmy Fallon Is the Reason Behind Collaborative Christmas Song

    WENN/Judy Eddy

Back in October, the country music queen joined forces with the late night host to record a cover of Mariah Carey classic ‘All I Want for Christmas Is You’ for ‘A Holly Dolly Christmas,’

    Dec 25, 2020
AceShowbiz – Dolly Parton has comedian Jimmy Fallon to thank for kickstarting work on her new holiday album, because she always regretted turning down the opportunity to sing with the funnyman years ago.
The country music queen recruited the U.S. late night host to record a cover of Mariah Carey classic “All I Want for Christmas Is You” for “A Holly Dolly Christmas”, and it was only after hitting the studio together that Parton decided to make it into a full duets project.
“I didn’t think about doing a bunch of duets at the start,” she confessed.
“When I was on (‘The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon’) a couple of years ago around the holiday season, he had asked me if I would sing with him, Mariah Carey’s song… and I didn’t know it good enough to sing it, and I didn’t want to mess it up, so of course I said no… and it really bothered me.”

After teaming up with Fallon, Parton called on pals including Willie Nelson, Billy Ray Cyrus, Michael Buble, and her goddaughter Miley Cyrus to get into the festive spirit with her.
“Then I got to thinking, ‘Well, maybe I’ll get all these other guys to sing with me’,” she continued.
“It was just one of those perfect storms, where everything fell like it was supposed to.”
Released in October, the song opens with Dolly aksing Jimmy, “Hey, Jimmy. I don’t know how to say this without sounding all mushy and romantic.” Later, Jimmy is heard replying, “I kinda like mushy and romantic.” She then responds, “You do?” she responds, to which he says, “Yeah, especially this time of year.”

Dolly Parton Always Hopes Beyonce Would Cover 'Jolene' Someday

    WENN/Ivan Nikolov

Aside from talking about her dream rendition of her 1974 tune, the country legend claims one of her proudest moments was Whitney Houston’s 1992 take on her song ‘I Will Always Love You’.

    Dec 7, 2020
AceShowbiz – Dolly Parton wants Beyonce Knowles to cover her hit “Jolene”.
So many artists have re-recorded the country queen’s hits, making her a stash of cash over the years, and the 1974 tune is a favourite, but Dolly dreams of one more big hit with the track.
“Jolene has been recorded more than any other song that I have ever written,” she tells The Big Issue. “It has been recorded worldwide over 400 times in lots of different languages by lots of different bands.”
“The White Stripes did a wonderful job of it, and many other people. But nobody’s ever had a really big hit record on it. I’ve always hoped somebody might do someday, someone like Beyonce.”

Meanwhile, one of Dolly’s proudest moments was the reaction to the late Whitney Houston’s 1992 take on her song “I Will Always Love You”.
“I had a number one with ‘I Will Always Love You’ twice – once in the 70s, then I did it in the movie ‘The Best Little Whorehouse’ in Texas, and had another number one in the 80s. And then Whitney did it and it was considered one of the greatest love songs of all time. Still to this day I take a lot of pride in that.”
The 74-year-old made a joke about her and her marriage to Carl Thomas during her appearance in the Wednesday, December 2 episode of “Table Manners” podcast. “My husband and I have been together for 57 years and married for 54, and I’m sick of him and I’m sure he’s sick of me,” she quipped to English singer Jessie Ware and her mom.
Elsewhere in the chat, the “9 to 5” hitmaker additionally opened up about her weaknesses. When asked about her love for food, she lightheartedly confessed, “My weaknesses have always been men, sex and food and not necessarily in that order.”

Dolly Parton Spills on Kenny Rogers' Part in the Long-Gap Between Her Christmas Albums

    WENN/PNP

‘A Holly Dolly Christmas’, the country superstar’s first seasonal release in 30 years, features her collaboration with Miley Cyrus, Michael Buble, Jimmy Fallon and her brother Randy Parton.

    Nov 27, 2020
AceShowbiz – Dolly Parton waited to gift fans with a new holiday album because her first festive offering with her late friend Kenny Rogers remains a popular pick 36 years on.
The country superstar teamed up with Rogers for 1984’s “Once Upon a Christmas”, and it took her another six years before her second holiday offering, “Home for Christmas”, hit retailers.
She is currently riding high on the success of her third seasonal release, “A Holly Dolly Christmas”, which dropped last month, but Dolly insists she wouldn’t have left such a long gap between releases if her Rogers project hadn’t been so “hot.”
“The reason I hadn’t done anything in 30 years is (because) Kenny Rogers, the album we did, still plays every Christmas, it’s still very hot,” Dolly explained on U.S. breakfast show “Today”.

“A Holly Dolly Christmas” features a string of collaborations with the likes of her goddaughter Miley Cyrus, Billy Ray Cyrus, Michael Buble, Jimmy Fallon and her brother Randy Parton, but Dolly didn’t set out to create a star-studded duets disc.
“I just wanted to do one on my own, but it turns out that I just brought all these other people to get involved in it as well,” she smiled.
And the coronavirus shutdown proved to be a creatively fruitful period for Parton and her pals.
She shared, “It was a good time because everybody was kinda shut down, and I thought, ‘Well, this is the perfect time to write some new music, to get in (the studio) and safely do it and send out all the stuff (music) to other people (when) we couldn’t get in the studio together, like we normally do, but this day and time, the new technology, that’s kinda how people are making records anyway.’ ”
“So we pulled it off, with all these great artists… I’m just really proud to have… all kinds of friends and family on there. It turned out really well.”

  • Jimmy Fallon Freaks Out Over Dolly Parton Duet of Mariah Carey's Christmas Song Cover

    WENN/Dave Starbuck

Invited to work with the country music legend for her first festive album in 30 years, the late night talk show host thought he would have to sing along to ‘All I Want for Christmas Is My Two Front Teeth’.

    Oct 28, 2020
AceShowbiz – Comedian Jimmy Fallon was sweating recording a cover of Mariah Carey’s “All I Want for Christmas Is You” with Dolly Parton, because a mix-up left him memorising the lyrics for a completely different holiday tune.
The late night talk show host was invited to work with the country music legend for her first festive album in 30 years, “A Holly Dolly Christmas”, but Fallon initially thought Parton wanted him to sing along to the novelty tune “All I Want for Christmas Is My Two Front Teeth” – instead of the Carey classic.
“Dolly Parton’s people called me and they said, ‘Would you like to do a duet with Dolly Parton?'” he recalled on U.S. breakfast show “Today”. “I go, ‘Of course..!'”
“They wanna do All I Want for Christmas. I go, ‘I got that! ‘All I want for Christmas is my two front teeth, my two front teeth…'”
However, Fallon soon learned that wasn’t the tune Parton had in mind – and then panicked as he realised he would never be able to hit the high notes for the iconic 1994 holiday hit.
“Two weeks before we record it, I got the words; it’s ‘All I want for Christmas Is You’ – the Mariah Carey song,” he shared.

“I go, ‘Oh no, we have a big problem. I can’t sing this! It’s Mariah Carey, no one can sing that song, it’s not even a duet!'”
“They go, ‘Well, let’s try it, we think we can make it work.’ I was sweating in the (recording) booth… Veins were coming out of my head trying to hit notes…”

Despite his concerns, Fallon admits the finished product isn’t bad at all: “It’s crazy. They have a great producer, it turned out awesome.”
Fallon is still in disbelief at sharing the recording booth with Parton, and now he hints they are preparing to perform the tune live for the first time at the New York City Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony this December.
“We’re doing something for the Christmas Tree Lighting, me and Dolly,” he teased.
Fallon isn’t the only celebrity to join Parton for a song on “A Holly Dolly Christmas” – she also recruited Willie Nelson, Michael Buble, and goddaughter Miley Cyrus for the project.

Jessica Simpson Spills the Reason Why She Botched Dolly Parton Tribute

    Instagram

The pop star was invited to perform a cover of ‘9 to 5’ at the Kennedy Center Honors in Washington D.C. back in 2006, but she flubbed the lyrics and cut short her performance.
    Feb 5, 2020
AceShowbiz – Jessica Simpson has hidden away a photo of herself posing with “country goddesses” Dolly Parton, Reba McEntire, and Shania Twain because she is so ashamed of botching a 2006 tribute to the “Jolene” legend.
The pop star was invited to perform a cover of “9 to 5” at the Kennedy Center Honors in Washington, D.C. to celebrate Parton’s career in front of guests including then-U.S. President George W. Bush, but Simpson flubbed the lyrics and cut short the song, before running offstage.
Now, in her new memoir, “Open Book”, Simpson reveals she was a mess that night because she had just been dumped again by her on/off boyfriend, rocker John Mayer, and had tried to drown her sorrows in alcohol right before hitting the stage.
“It was the Kennedy Center Honors, and he broke up with me – our third break-up or something,” she recalls on U.S. breakfast show “Today”.
“It was right before I was gonna do this huge thing. Dolly Parton is my idol; I love Dolly, and I drank before I went on stage. That is not John’s fault; I’m the one that drank. I just tried to numb myself.”
“I was just out there and I tried to sing and I froze. I honestly didn’t think about the drinking, I felt like what kept me from singing was heartbreak.
“I said I was sorry, and that Dolly deserved better,” Simpson remembered of the performance fail.
The event was commemorated with a backstage photo of the singer surrounded by Parton, McEntire, Twain, and actress Reese Witherspoon, who had all been in attendance at the high-profile gig – but Simpson cannot bear to look at the image.
“This (is a) picture that most people would hang in their house; it’s like, mentors of mine who are country goddesses,” she shares. “And the story behind it, I can’t even look at the picture, I can’t even look at my face because I know the pain that I was having and I didn’t feel worthy of being in that photo.”
    [embedded content]
In the same chat, Simpson, who is now sober, reveals she and Mayer split “close to nine times” during their “very complex” on/off five-year romance. The relationship finally came to an end in 2010.
