Eddie Murphy Blames Career Break on His Worst Actor Ever Win at Razzie Award

    WENN/HRC

In a new podcast interview, the ‘Coming 2 America’ actor reveals that he originally planned to take a one year break after a string of flops, before it turned into a six-year hiatus.

    Mar 10, 2021
AceShowbiz – Eddie Murphy’s Worst Actor of Decade ‘win’ at the Golden Raspberry Awards in 2010 prompted him to take a break from Hollywood.
The “Coming 2 America” star’s feelings were hurt when he was named the worst actor after a string of flops, and he tells Marc Maron’s “WTF” podcast the Razzies mention really got to him.
“I was making s**tty movies. I was like, ‘This s**t ain’t fun. They’re giving me Razzies…,” he says. “Motherf**kers gave me the ‘worst actor ever’ Razzie, [so I thought], ‘Maybe it’s time to take a break’.”
“I was only gonna take a break for a year, then all of a sudden six years go by, and I’m sitting on the couch, and I could sit on the couch and not get off it, but I don’t want the last bunch of s**t they see me do [to be] bulls**t.”

He adds, “The plan was to go do Dolemite [Is My Name], [host] ‘Saturday Night Live’, ‘Coming 2 America’ and then do stand-up and see how I felt afterwards. At least then they’ll know I’m [still] funny.”
Murphy is well on his way – his new “Coming to America” sequel is a hit and his turn as filmmaker Rudy Ray Moore in “Dolemite Is My Name” earned Eddie the Redeemer Award at the 2019 Razzies and a Golden Globe nomination.

Throughout his career, the 59-year-old actor has been nominated multiple times at Razzie Awards. His performances in such movies as “I Spy”, “Norbit”, “Meet Dave” and “A Thousand Words” brought him Worst Actor and Worst Supporting Actor nods.

Eddie Murphy Says His Idea for 'Coming to America 3' Will Work When He Turns 75

    Amazon Prime Video

The former ‘Saturday Night Life’ regular has already had an idea for the third movie shortly after the second ‘Coming to America’ installment was released.

    Mar 7, 2021
AceShowbiz – Eddie Murphy has plans for “Coming to America 3” – but his idea won’t work until he turns 75.
The star, whose sequel to 1988 cult comedy “Coming to America”, was released on Friday (05Mar20), never planned to make a second film in the series, but now he’s thinking about a third film, but fans will have to wait a while.
“We never thought we were going to do a (Coming to America) sequel…,” he tells “Live with Kelly and Ryan”. “Of all the movies that I’ve done, Coming To America became a kind of cult movie and they show it all the time on TV. It’s always on and at Halloween some people get dressed up as characters from the movie.”

He can’t believe there’s even a restaurant in Los Angeles that “turns itself into a McDowell’s at Halloween” – a tribute to the funny McDonald’s knock-off burger chain that appears in the film.
“They have, like, sexual chocolate milkshakes on their menu, so this movie is like a cult picture. It was maybe 25 years in, I thought, ‘If I could figure out a way to connect these dots, there’s an audience for a sequel…’ – and here we are.”
Eddie, who turns 60 next month (Apr21), has already mapped out the next sequel, and while it may not take 33 years to make the next follow-up, it won’t be arriving any time soon.
“There’s an idea for a Coming to America 3 that I have, but it doesn’t happen for 16 years,” he smiles. “I have to be 75 to do it. And not make me up like (I look) 75, but really be 75.”

Eddie Murphy Cast Louie Anderson in 'Coming to America' to Meet Studio's Demand of 'White Guy'

    WENN/Instagram/Avalon

During an appearance on ‘Today’, the comedian known for his portrayal of Prince Akeem reveals that film chiefs were uneasy at releasing his classic comedy as he had originally envisioned.

    Mar 1, 2021
AceShowbiz – Eddie Murphy hired fellow veteran comedian Louie Anderson to star in his “Coming to America” classic because studio bosses refused to make the movie without “somebody white” in the cast.
Anderson portrayed fast food employee Maurice in the 1998 hit, and Murphy confesses the casting decision was only made to satisfy film chiefs, who were apparently uneasy at releasing the comedy as the funnyman had originally envisioned.
“Louie Anderson is in the original ‘Coming to America’ because the whole cast was black and the studio was like, ‘We have to have somebody white in the movie. We’re not making the movie without somebody white in it’,” Murphy recalled on U.S. breakfast show “Today”.
“I was like, ‘Really?’ So I was like, ‘Who’s the funniest white guy around and [is] a friend of mine? Oh, Louie’s perfect!’ and that’s how Louie ended up in the movie.”

“Coming to America” was distributed by officials at Paramount Pictures.
Murphy is reprising his role as Prince Akeem for a long-awaited sequel, and this time, he made it a family affair, recruiting his real-life daughter, 19-year-old Bella Murphy, to play one of his three onscreen daughters.
And the comedy icon couldn’t contain his pride at getting to work alongside his child in “Coming 2 America”, which will debut on Amazon Prime Video on March 5.
“I can’t even put into words [his joy]…,” he said. “You go see your child in a school play and your heart bursts with pride. To look over on the set and seeing her, I had the big, giant, proud papa moment every day.”
Bella is one of Murphy’s 10 children, and it’s his role as a dad which he treasures the most, “My legacy is my children, it’s these 10 human beings that I brought into the world,” he smiled.

Eddie Murphy Calls Himself 'Too Old' to Return to Music Scene

    WENN

The ‘Nutty Professor’ actor, 59, reveals he never stopped making music despite never releasing another album since 1993, but he has no plan to release any of his new songs.

    Feb 28, 2021
AceShowbiz – Eddie Murphy has a vault of pop hits he has recorded, but he insists fans will never hear his songs.
The funnyman never stopped recording after tasting chart success with songs like “Party All the Time” and “Put Your Mouth on It” in the 1980s, but he insists he’s too old to be chasing hits.
“I stopped putting music out, but I still do music all the time,” Murphy, whose last album was 1993’s “Love’s Alright?”, tells U.S. TV talk show host Tamron Hall. “That’s kind of, like, young folks do that. The Rolling Stones ain’t putting no records out! They’re playing their old tracks. Nobody wants to hear the Rolling Stones’ new s**t.”

Asked if he’d consider teaming up with someone like Megan Thee Stallion, he adds, “Megan Thee Stallion? I’m 59! I can’t be doing nothing with no Megan Thee Stallion.”
“You know how crazy I would look doing something with Megan Thee Stallion? I’m gonna be 60 in April. I can’t be having Megan Thee Stallion doing her stuff and I’m standing next to her with my old a** playing my guitar. I have my first grandchild. Once you’re a grandpa, you can’t do no tracks with Megan Thee Stallion.”
Eddie’s interview with Hall will air on her show on 11 March (21).
The actor is currently gearing up for the release of his new movie “Coming 2 America”. He reunites with Arsenio Hall, James Earl Jones, and Shari Headley, his co-stars from the first film “Coming to America”.
