When speaking about his upcoming Super Bowl LV collaboration with the RnB singer, the ‘Record Year’ hitmaker admits he initially came close to turning down the offer.

    Jan 29, 2021
AceShowbiz – Country star Eric Church reneged on a vow never to sing the U.S. National Anthem in public in order to score a Super Bowl duet with R&B singer Jazmine Sullivan.
The “Record Year” hitmaker admits he was always nervous to tackle “The Star-Spangled Banner” because he doesn’t think he has the vocal ability to pull off the tune, but after hearing Sullivan sing, he jumped at the opportunity to collaborate with her.
In an interview on Apple Music Country, Church admits he came close to turning down the Super Bowl invite.
“Let me tell you something. She may be the best singer. I was floored,” he gushed in the chat, which is set to premiere on Friday, January 29.
“And you know what, the best thing about this, no matter what happens, because that’s a nervy thing that we got to do, but what a fan, I’m a fan (of Sullivan’s). I’ve went in and listened to everything she did (sic). And I had heard her name, but full disclosure, I had not listened (to her songs).”

The unlikely duo, which has yet to meet, was suggested by producer Adam Blackstone, and prior to hearing Sullivan’s work, Church wasn’t that keen, reports People.com.
“Here’s what I said… I’ve said this forever, ‘I will never ever sing the national anthem.’ It’s so hard. Except (for) the Super Bowl…,” he shared. “I mean, I’m not Chris Stapleton. I fully assumed they’re never going to ask me. So, this is the first.”
“My first response was, ‘Mm-mm. I’m a stylist, not a vocalist,’ ” he added. “I heard it (duet proposal) and I thought, ‘That’s cool, that sounds like me.’ And then I heard her (Sullivan) and I’m not missing a chance to sing with her. And that was it.”
“Once I heard her voice, I said, ‘OK, I’m in.’ ”
The duet partners will be hitting the stage together in Tampa, Florida on 7 February, when the Tampa Bay Buccaneers will take on the Kansas City Chiefs for the Super Bowl title.

The Weeknd will be performing the Super Bowl Halftime Show.

  • Eric Church Reached Out to Johnny Cash's Children Ahead of 2020 ACM Awards Performance

Executive producer RAC Clark reveals that the ‘Springsteen’ hitmaker wrote a letter to Rosanne and John Carter Cash to clear the incorporation of ‘Ragged Old Flag’ into ‘Stick That in Your Country’.
    Sep 30, 2020
AceShowbiz – Singer Eric Church only managed to pull off his performance at the 2020 Academy of Country Music Awards by penning a letter to Johnny Cash’s two artist children to secure the rights to his work.
Church moved fans by incorporating Cash’s “Ragged Old Flag” into his single “Stick That in Your Country Song” for the recent prizegiving, but the event’s executive producer, RAC Clark, reveals the set almost didn’t happen, because they were having trouble clearing the sample use with the late legend’s estate.
“As we got into it, we found the Cash estate and publishers are very protective,” Clark explained to Country Aircheck.
“No matter how much talking I did trying to get it cleared, it was a corporate wall.”

Clark suggested Church make a last-ditch attempt by appealing to fellow musicians Rosanne Cash and John Carter Cash – two of Johnny’s five kids, and the personal touch worked.
“I’m never going to share that letter, but it’s the reason that performance aired,” Clark said. “(Church’s) passion about what he wanted to say and why allowed them (Cash’s children) to entrust him with their father’s legacy.”
The producer added, “Part of my job is to bring these things (performance ideas) to life, but this was Eric’s vision. He pushed it over the top, and boy, did he deliver.”
At the 55th Annual ACM Awards, which took place on September 16, Church kicked off his performance by strumming on a dark stage. Footage of Cash reciting “Ragged Old Flag” later played on the screen behind him, while the “Desperate Man” belted out his own song as an image of the American flag waving behind him.

Eric Church Makes His Collaborators 'Uncomfortable' During the Making of New Album

    WENN/Judy Eddy

The ‘Hell on the Heart’ crooner compares the making of his upcoming studio installment to the horror movie ‘The Shining’ because he wants to do ‘something nuts.’
    Feb 23, 2020
AceShowbiz – Eric Church purposely made his collaborators “uncomfortable” while they worked on his upcoming album.
The country music star is putting the finishing touched on the follow-up to 2018’s “Desperate Man”, and during a Q&A with radio personality Lon Helton during Country Radio Seminar in Nashville, Tennessee on Thursday, February 20, 2020, how opened up on his unusual working method.
“I felt like it was time to do something nuts,” he said, describing how he took up residency in a restaurant converted into a studio in Banner Elk, North Carolina.
“The goal was to write and record 28 songs in 28 days. I’d write a song in the morning, we’d cut it that night,” he explained. “We removed all the barriers. Chase that as hard as you can, move on. For me, it’s as far out there as I have gotten.”
The “Hell on the Heart” hitmaker said he immersed himself in the isolation, describing the situation as, “kind of like (horror movie) The Shining,” in which a frustrated writer seeks out inspiration by taking a caretaker’s job in an isolated mountain resort.
“Looking back at what came out of it, everyone needed to be uncomfortable. The writers had no clue what they were in for. All that is what made it great.”
The new album follows a string of guest appearances from the star, including the Keith Urban collaboration “We Were”, and Luke Combs’ new single “Does to Me”.
