Katherine Heigl Confesses to Having This Regret Over 'Grey's Anatomy' Controversy

    ABC

Looking back at her time on the hit medical drama, the actress famous as Dr. Izzie Stevens admits that part of her controversial behavior was down to the mental health struggles she had quietly faced.

    Feb 4, 2021
AceShowbiz – Actress Katherine Heigl wishes she had learned how to better manage her anxiety earlier on in her career, because it would have allowed her to handle difficult situations with “more grace”.
The “Knocked Up” star shot to fame in 2005 on hit medical drama “Grey’s Anatomy”, but her time on the show was marred by controversy months after her 2007 Emmy win for her role as Dr. Izzie Stevens, as she withdrew her name from awards consideration, claiming her storylines did not warrant a nomination.
Her actions led to a clash with creator Shonda Rhimes, and she eventually left the show in 2010, and now Heigl admits part of her behavior was down to the mental health struggles she had quietly faced – and she didn’t know how to deal with them.
“I don’t think you get through life without any regrets, but you can create some purpose from it,” she told People magazine.
“I know there’s a better way to deal with those things than I did. I could have handled it with more grace.”

She continued, “I don’t actually regret leaving Grey’s Anatomy – I did the right thing for me and for my family – but I do regret the heightened drama I was feeling at that time. If I’d known anything about meditation then, or had been talking to a therapist or someone to help me through some of the fear that I was steeped in, I think I would have been more calm in how I approached what boundaries I needed to create to thrive.”
One of her main problems was anxiety, which made Heigl feel insecure about her work.
“I certainly regret not learning earlier how to manage my anxiety better,” she shared. “Living at that heightened level of anxiety… created a defensiveness in me and wariness and assuming that people were against me. I let my mind run rampant without the tools to properly manage that.”
Heigl has since turned to a professional counsellor to help her work through her personal issues, and she insists she has taken note of the lessons learned over the years.
“The last five years has been really about learning how to manage that anxiety and to control my own thoughts (sic),” she said. “I learned that not managing stress leads to not dealing with negativity or frustration or disappointment in the proper way.”
“Something else that experience taught me is that no matter how big an opportunity or how rewarding something is, there will be moments of struggle,” she added of her time on “Grey’s Anatomy”. “There will be difficulties and disappointment and miscommunications, but you must learn how to manage those with grace instead of fear.”

I did say, ‘This is awesome. I love that we’re throwing a spotlight on this. Patricia Dempsey Describes 'Grey's Anatomy' Return as 'Healing Process'

    ABC

The actor returns to the ABC medical drama series as Derek Shepherd, reuniting with Ellen Pompeo’s Meredith Grey in the seventeenth season five years after his exit.

    Nov 15, 2020
AceShowbiz – Patrick Dempsey has opened up on reuniting with Ellen Pompeo for his recent surprise “Grey’s Anatomy” cameo.
On Thursday (12Nov20) night’s season 17 premiere Pompeo’s Meredith Grey collapsed in the hospital parking lot and a dream sequence took place, which saw her reunited with Dempsey’s Derek Shepherd – who died on the show back in April, 2015.
Explaining how his return came about, the star tells Deadline, “I came across a photo that I was going to post that had Ellen and I, and I think that produced a call where I reached out to Ellen, and this was right around, the conversation was starting for season 17.”
“We hadn’t spoken or been together for a while. It was a great opportunity to catch up and say, okay, what can we do for all the frontline responders (amid the pandemic)?” he explains.

During the Covid-19 crisis, bosses from the show have been sharing medical equipment from the set with those in need and, according to Dempsey, he was keen to “make people feel better, to give some comfort in this time of uncertainty.”
“I think the whole atmosphere has changed, certainly working at the beach, and seeing everybody again was really a very healing process, and really rewarding, and a lot of fun,” he confessed. “And hopefully, that feeling translates, and the fans enjoy it. I know that they’ve been wanting us to get back together, and I think this will satisfy a lot of people, and surprise a lot of people, hopefully.”
Dempsey went on to add that it was “really enjoyable” to get back into character as Derek, and “great to see everybody.”
“The dynamic behind the camera had changed. There’s much more diversity within the crew,” he noted. “There was a nice balance, too, of equality that I was seeing. So, culturally, there was a lot of things that were different, that I thought were very positive and very inspiring, actually.”

'Grey's Anatomy': Original Star Makes Surprising Return in Season 17 Premiere

    Twitter

In the final seconds of the highly-anticipated episode, which also sees Meredith, Bailey and the rest of the doctors dealing with COVID-19 pandemic, Meredith surprisingly reunites with one beloved character.

    Nov 13, 2020
AceShowbiz – Fans of “Grey’s Anatomy” were in for a huge surprise as the two-hour season 17 premiere arrived on Thursday, November 12. [SPOILER ALERT] In the final seconds of the highly-anticipated episode, Meredith (Ellen Pompeo) reunited with one beloved character who was none other than Patrick Dempsey’s Derek Shepherd, much to fans’ delight.
The reunion happened in a dream sequence after Meredith was found unconscious in the parking lot of Grey Sloan Memorial hospital by McWidow (Richard Flood) after grueling COVID-19 shifts. In her dream, she was strolling on a sunny California-esque beach while donning a white shirt. Meredith then noticed a figure waving at her from afar and it didn’t take long for her to realize who the person was.
“Oh my god!” she said while McDreamy, her late husband and soulmate, approached her. McDreamy, who died a tragic death back in season 11, appeared while wearing a baby blue shirt. Fortunately for fans, that wouldn’t be the last time for them to see McDreamy since Dempsey is set to reprise his role as Derek in next week’s episode, which was directed by Kevin McKidd.

Of the reunion, showrunner Krista Vernoff told Entertainment Tonight, “The most important task we had this season was to honor the reality of this global pandemic and the impact it’s having — particularly on healthcare workers. Along with that we had to come up with creative ways to allow our show to still be fun and romantic and provide some escapism. Enter Patrick Dempsey.”
She went on to say, “The beach motif — which will continue beyond the premiere — provided a way for us to live outside the pandemic even for a little while here and there. And Derek’s return provided pure joy for us, for Meredith, and for the fans.”
“Season 17 has been a Herculean effort by our cast, our crew, our writers, and our partners at Disney and ABC — and we are proud of it,” she added. “But our effort is nothing compared to the work of our Frontline healthcare workers to whom this season is dedicated. We hope our show inspires you to wear your masks to protect them and each other. As Derek Shepherd would say, ‘It’s a beautiful day to save lives.’ ”
“Grey’s Anatomy” airs Thursdays at 9 P.M. ET/PT on ABC.

  • 'Grey's Anatomy' Will Be Set 'a Month and a Half' Into Covid-19 Pandemic for New Season

    ABC

The Ellen Pompeo-starring medical television drama series is expected to take place ‘a month and a half’ into the coronavirus health crisis when the show returns for the new episodes.
    Aug 10, 2020
AceShowbiz – The forthcoming series of “Grey’s Anatomy” will take place “a month and a half” into the Covid-19 pandemic.
Showruner Krista Vernoff previously confirmed that the series would indeed tackle the pandemic in the new season, insisting there’s “no way to be a long-running medical show and not do the medical story of our lifetimes.”
In a new interview with Entertainment Tonight, actor Giacomo Gianniotti, who has played Dr. Andrew DeLuca on the TV medical drama since 2015, opened up about the forthcoming episodes, confirming, “It’s going to take place a little beyond where we left off in the last season.”
“We might have some flashbacks. We might have some things where we’re referencing last season, just to have context leading up,” he explained. “But we are going to have a little leap when we start this season in terms of time. We’re not picking up right where we left off.”
According to Gianniotti, the show is hoping to resume filming in September.

  • 'Grey's Anatomy' to Tackle Covid-19 Pandemic on Season 17

    ABC

The producer of the longrunning medical drama series confirms that they are going to address the coronavirus health crisis during the upcoming next season.
    Jul 22, 2020
AceShowbiz – The coronavirus pandemic is set to be addressed during the forthcoming 17th season of “Grey’s Anatomy”.
Filming of the series, which follows a group of surgeons in Seattle, Washington, is currently on hold due to the global health crisis but executive producer Krista Vernoff has revealed that when the show resumes production, the deadly disease will be addressed.
Appearing as part of Emmys virtual event “Quaranstreaming: Comfort TV That Keeps Us Going”, she confirmed writers will incorporate a COVID-19 storyline next season.
“We’re going to address this pandemic for sure,” Vernoff explained. “There’s no way to be a long-running medical show and not do the medical story of our lifetimes.”
She added that many of the stories she has read, illustrating what medical workers face on the frontlines of the virus, have mirrored what the
character of Owen Hunt, played by Kevin McKidd, has faced as a trauma surgeon and war veteran.
“Every year, we have doctors come and tell us their stories, and usually they’re telling their funniest or craziest stories,” she added. “This year, it has felt more like therapy.”
Vernoff noted doctors talk about the pandemic as “a war that they were not trained for,” adding, “That’s been one of our big conversations about Owen – he’s actually trained for this in a way that most of the other doctors aren’t…”
“This is an opportunity and a responsibility to tell some of those stories.”
A premiere date for “Grey’s Anatomy” Season 17 has yet to be announced.

Ellen Pompeo Mulling Over Idea of 'Grey's Anatomy' Coronavirus Episode

    ABC

The actress who portrays Dr. Meredith Grey on the hit medical series doesn’t rule out the possibility of tackling the Covid-19 pandemic in a future episode.
    Apr 17, 2020
AceShowbiz – Ellen Pompeo has “thought about” the possibility of “Grey’s Anatomy” tackling the coronavirus in an upcoming episode.
The medical drama, in which Ellen stars as Dr. Meredith Grey, is known for broaching timely subjects and social issues in its scripts, and has previously aired episodes centred around topics including same-sex marriage, immigration, cyber terrorism and mass shootings in America.
It remains to be seen whether or not the coronavirus pandemic, which has claimed the lives of more than 138,000 people worldwide since it began last year 2019, will feature in one or more episodes of the show, but Ellen told Variety she hasn’t ruled it out.
“I thought about it,” she mused. “Obviously, we don’t want to get too political here, but I was just watching the news and I saw a clip of Barack Obama in 2014, saying that a pandemic was inevitable and that we should be prepared for it. And then in 2014, the Republicans were not granting him the budget, the access to put together what he felt like he needed to keep the American people safe, is how he put it in his words. So, in 2014, Obama was very well aware that this was going to happen and very well aware that we needed to be more prepared than we were at that time for it.”
“The fact that five years later we’re not prepared, some people dropped the ball for sure. It’s disappointing,” Ellen, a staunch critic of U.S. President Donald Trump, concluded.

'Grey's Anatomy' and 'Grace and Frankie' Shut Down Production Amid Coronavirus Concerns

    ABC/Netflix

The two hit series follow in the footsteps of ‘Riverdale’ and ‘The Morning Show’ in temporarily suspending their filming to prevent the spread of Covid-19.
    Mar 13, 2020
AceShowbiz – Production on hit TV shows “Grey’s Anatomy” and “Grace and Frankie” has been shut down amid the coronavirus pandemic.
“Grey’s Anatomy”‘s executive producers Krista Vernoff, Debbie Allen and James D. Parriott announced the shutdown of the medical drama in a note to the cast in crew on Thursday, March 12, observing Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti’s orders on limiting public gatherings to 50 people or less.
“This decision was made to ensure the health and safety of the whole cast and crew and the safety of our loved ones outside of work, and it was made in accordance with Mayor Garcetti’s suggestion that we not gather in groups of more than 50,” the note read.
“Out of an abundance of caution, production is postponed on Grey’s Anatomy effective immediately. We are going home now for at least two weeks and waiting to see how the coronavirus situation evolves. Stay safe, stay healthy, stay hydrated, stay home as much as possible, and wash your hands frequently. Please take care of yourselves and each other.”
Meanwhile, the final season of Jane Fonda and Lily Tomlin’s Netflix comedy has also been put on hold.
“To ensure the health and safety of our cast and crew, Skydance has temporarily suspended filming for Grace and Frankie, the series,” a company statement to Deadline reads.
The two series join the likes of “Riverdale”, which has shut down production in Vancouver, Canada, and Jennifer Aniston and Reese Witherspoon’s “The Morning Show”, among the U.S. programmes cancelled due to Covid-19 fears.
