  • Leslie Odom Jr. Almost Walked Away From 'Hamilton' Movie as He Demanded Pay Parity

    Instagram

The actor who plays the Founding Father Aaron Burr in the critically-acclaimed musical says he would have left if he didn’t receive the same fee as his white peer.
    Aug 5, 2020
AceShowbiz – “Hamilton” star Leslie Odom Jr. was prepared to miss the filmed version of the hit musical after producers held out on his request for pay parity until the eve of production.
The Broadway smash was filmed with the original cast over two nights in 2016, and was recently released on the new Disney+ streaming service to high praise from fans and critics alike.
Odom, Jr. reprised his role as U.S. Founding Father Aaron Burr for the recording, but reveals he almost walked away from the part because the Tony and Grammy Award winner, who is African-American, demanded he receive the same fee as his white peer, Aaron Tveit, when he starred in the 2016 TV event, “Grease: Live”.
“The day before the movie (shoot), we were still in negotiations of whether I was gonna do the movie, because the movie had been announced…, but no one had called my agent to ask if I’d wanted to do (the filmed play),” Odom Jr. explained on the “Armchair Expert with Dax Shepard” podcast.
“It was assumed that we wanted to do the movie and that we would do it for a certain number, and all this stuff was assumed.”
“And mind you, we were a week before the (Broadway) contracts end, so it’s like, the wonderful thing about what’s happening in the streets (protests for racial equality), is it has opened the door for more honest conversation…”
He continued, “They came to me with an offer: ‘Leslie, we’re shooting tomorrow…’ And I’m like, ‘Here’s the thing: this is my area of expertise, this is my life’s work, this is all I have. This is my life’s work on the stage…, and so I just can’t sell it away for magic beans; I can’t give it away…’ ”
Odom Jr. asked his representative at talent agency CAA to find out how much his “white counterpart” Tveit made for “Grease: Live” and requested he receive the same compensation.
“This is Hamilton!” he exclaimed. “So when I found out how much he made, I didn’t ask for a penny more, but I said, ‘You must pay me exactly what that white boy got to do Grease: Live.’ ”
The gamble paid off, but Odom Jr. insists he would have walked away had his request been snubbed.
“It doesn’t always work… I lose jobs sometimes,” he shrugged. “The day before we shot that movie, I called out (of work). I was not kidding (about pay request). I was not coming to work the next day to do the movie…”
“It was the principle for me and sometimes it doesn’t work out… and you have to go, ‘That’s OK.’ ”
The “Hamilton” film also stars creator Lin-Manuel Miranda, Daveed Diggs, Phillipa Soo, and Jonathan Groff.

  • Lin-Manuel Miranda Gracefully Accepts Criticisms of 'Hamilton' Glorifying Slave Owners

Amid the recent success of the ‘Hamilton’ movie debut, the musical is under scrutiny again over its portrayal of Alexander Hamilton, who has been accused of being complicit in the slave trade.
    Jul 8, 2020
AceShowbiz – Lin-Manuel Miranda has responded after “Hamilton” came under fire over accusation that it glorifies slave owners. In light of the massive success of the “Hamilton” movie which debuted this past weekend, the show is under scrutiny again over its portrayal of Alexander Hamilton, who has been accused of being complicit in the slave trade.
In the musical and the film, Hamilton is depicted as a “young, scrappy, and hungry” immigrant and someone who was passionate about the abolition of slavery. The real Alexander Hamilton, who was the inspiration behind the musical, has been accused of being complicit in the slave trade as he had several friends who owned slaves, including George Washington.
Though he despised slavery, Hamilton married into a prominent New York slave-holding family and managed the sale of slaves for his in-laws. He also did accounting for a Caribbean trading company that engaged in the slave trade.
Following the release of the movie version, people demand “Hamilton” cancellation, with the hashtag “#CancelHamilton” growing on Twitter. “How is Hamilton not canceled? Alexander Hamilton owned and traded slaves. I think we need to cancel Hamilton,” one person wrote on Twitter. Another added, “Hamilton was a slave trader. Tear down the statues NOW and #CancelHamilton.”
Writer Tracy Clayton posted a series of tweets debating the issue with “Hamilton”, writing that the play and the movie version “were given to us in two different worlds & our willingness to interrogate things in this way feels like a clear sign of change.”
The host of the weekly Netflix podcast “Strong Black Legends” added that “Hamilton” is “a flawed play about flawed people written by an imperfect person that gave my flawed and imperfect little life a big boost when i needed it most, so again i know im biased, but i do appreciate the change this illustrates & will be following the convo’s evolution.”
Miranda, who wrote the music and lyrics as well as starred in the original Broadway show, later responded to the backlash by commenting on the thread. Taking the criticisms in stride, he wrote, “Appreciate you so much, @brokeymcpoverty. All the criticisms are valid.”

Lin-Manuel Miranda responded to the ‘Hamilton’ backlash.
The 40-year-old playwright went on admitting his shortage in creating the musical, “The sheer tonnage of complexities & failings of these people I couldn’t get. Or wrestled with but cut. I took 6 years and fit as much as I could in a 2.5 hour musical. Did my best. It’s all fair game.”

  • Lin-Manuel Miranda Accused of Romanticizing Slave Owners With 'Hamilton'

    Disney+

The ‘Mary Poppins Returns’ actor locks his social media as his new movie debuts on streaming site and receives mixed reactions as it gets criticized for glorifying slave owners.
    Jul 4, 2020
AceShowbiz – Lin-Manuel Miranda has locked his Twitter account after “Hamilton” debuted on Disney+.
The singer/songwriter and actor debuted the film version of his Broadway smash on the streaming platform on Friday (03Jul20) and, following the release, went private on on the social media site.
Celebrating the premiere, Miranda participated in a live-tweeting party with fans and the rest of the cast from 7 pm until 10 pm ET, shortly after which he locked his account.
In his final public post, the star signed off, saying, “Thank you for tonight. I’m so grateful you just have the whole thing now. With this extraordinary company and crew. It’s yours.”
While he didn’t give a solid explanation as to why he quit the platform, fans have speculated it may be due to backlash online over the musical’s focus on a group of men that were slave owners, with some people calling the show racist for glorifying the people in history.
Miranda previously insisted “Hamilton” has taken on a whole new significance in the wake of Black Lives Matter protests across the U.S. and worldwide.
“There’s nothing new about what’s happening,” he told WSJ magazine. “It’s been interesting to see the different things that pop up, because I was trying to tell this specific story, but I was grabbing from the America I know. So it all hits in different ways, based on where America is.”

'Hamilton' Movie to Get Early Release on Disney +

    Walt Disney Studios

In addition to being moved up 15 months earlier, the film version of Lin-Manuel Miranda’s Broadway show is switched to the streaming platform instead of the planned theatrical release.
    May 13, 2020
AceShowbiz – “Hamilton” is getting fast-tracked amid all the uncertainties due to the coronavirus pandemic. Disney has decided to move up the release date of the movie version of the Lin-Manuel Miranda Broadway musical 15 months earlier, from its original October 15, 2021 release date to July 3 of this year. Not only that, but also the movie will skip its planned theatrical release in favor of straight-to-streams on Disney+.
Disney Executive Chairman Robert Iger and creator/original star Miranda appeared on “Good Morning America” on Tuesday, May 12 to announce the decision. Hyping it up on Twitter, Miranda posted a teaser of the film and wrote along with it, “It’s only a matter of time… Our Hamilton film. THIS July 3rd. On Disney+.”

Lin-Manuel Miranda announces ‘Hamilton’ movie’s new release date.
He also said in a statement, “I’m so proud of how beautifully Tommy Kail has brought ‘Hamilton’ to the screen. He’s given everyone who watches this film the best seat in the house.” He continued, “I’m so grateful to Disney and Disney+ for reimagining and moving up our release to July 4th weekend of this year, in light of the world turning upside down. I’m so grateful to all the fans who asked for this, and I’m so glad that we’re able to make it happen. I’m so proud of this show. I can’t wait for you to see it.”
Iger added, “No other artistic work in the last decade has had the cultural impact of ‘Hamilton’ — an inspiring and captivating tale told and performed in a powerfully creative way. In light of the extraordinary challenges facing our world, this story about leadership, tenacity, hope, love and the power of people to unite against the forces of adversity is both relevant and impactful.”
The new date Disney picked for the “Hamilton” film isn’t a coincident, as Iger said, “We are thrilled to bring this phenomenon to Disney+ on the eve of Independence Day, and we have the brilliant Lin-Manuel Miranda and the team behind ‘Hamilton’ to thank for allowing us to do so more than a year before planned.”
The “Hamilton” movie is edited together from three performances of Hamilton at the Richard Rodgers Theatre in New York City in 2016 with the original principal Broadway cast members, combined with a few “setup shots” recorded without audience. Like the stage production, it is directed by Thomas Kail, with Miranda starring in the title role.

    Feb 4, 2020
AceShowbiz – Lin-Manuel Miranda is taking his hit Broadway musical “Hamilton” to the big screen.
The creator and former star of the historical hip-hop production has revealed a filmed version of “Hamilton”, featuring the original, Tony Award-winning cast during a June, 2016 show, has been optioned by Disney bosses and will be released in theatres in October, 2021.
The footage was directed by Thomas Kail, and will be co-produced by Miranda.
“I fell in love with musical storytelling growing up with the legendary Howard Ashman-Alan Menken Disney collaborations – ‘The Little Mermaid (1989)’, ‘Beauty and The Beast’, ‘Aladdin’,” Miranda shares in a statement.
“I’m so proud of what Tommy Kail has been able to capture in this filmed version of ‘Hamilton’ – a live theatrical experience that feels just as immediate in your local movie theatre.”
“We’re excited to partner with Disney to bring the original Broadway company of ‘Hamilton’ to the largest audience possible.”
Disney chief Bob Iger adds, “Lin-Manuel Miranda created an unforgettable theater experience and a true cultural phenomenon, and it was for good reason that ‘Hamilton’ was hailed as an astonishing work of art.”
“All who saw it with the original cast will never forget that singular experience. And we’re thrilled to have the opportunity to share this same Broadway experience with millions of people around the world.”

In addition to Miranda, who portrayed lead character Alexander Hamilton, the film version of “Hamilton” features a cast that includes Daveed Diggs, Leslie Odom Jr., Jonathan Groff, and Phillipa Soo.
It’s not the only Miranda musical to get the movie treatment – the star has been working on recreating his In the Heights production as a new film, which is due to open in cinemas this summer.
