AceShowbiz – A TV show based on Joe Exotic is getting a joint straight-to-series order by the NBCUniversal Television and Streaming divisions. According to reports, “Joe Exotic” (working title) earns an unprecedented rollout across three different NBCU entertainment platforms.
The three platforms are a broadcast network, NBC, a streamer, Peacock, as well as a basic cable network, USA. The project, which is based on the second season of Wondery’s “Over My Dead Body”podcast, was originally set up at NBCU’s UCP in November 2019. The interest of the project spikes following Netflix’s hit series “Tiger King: Murder, Mayhem and Madness”.
“Joe Exotic” is set to follow real-life character Carole Baskin (Kate McKinnon) who is a big cat enthusiast. As she learns that fellow exotic animal lover Joe “Exotic” Schreibvogel is breeding and using his big cats for profit, she sets out to shut down his venture, inciting a quickly escalating rivalry. But Carole has a checkered past of her own and when the claws come out, Joe will stop at nothing to expose what he sees as her hypocrisy. The results prove dangerous.
They have yet to cast an actor to portray Joe, a tiger breeder and big cats zoo owner. In April, he was convicted and sentenced to 22 years in federal prison for trying to hire a hitman to kill Carole and being responsible of dozen wildlife violations, including the killing of five tigers.
The series reportedly will be penned by Etan Frankel and “Saturday Night Live” star Kate. Kate will also serve as executive producer alongside Wondery’s Hernan Lopez, Marshall Levy and Aaron Heart.
Aside from this series, there’s a separate series based on Joe that is being developed by Imagine Television Studios and CBS Television Studios. Starring Nicolas Cage as Joe, the show uses a Texas Monthly article by Leif Reigstad titled “A Dark Journey Into the World of a Man Gone Wild” as their material basis.

The new documentary about the ‘Tiger King’ star will feature never-before-seen interviews with the former Oklahoma zookeeper and follow the stories of the big cats rescued from his zoo.
    Jul 17, 2020
AceShowbiz – “Tiger King” star Joe Exotic is returning to TV screens from behind bars in a new documentary special.
“Surviving Joe Exotic” will feature never-before-seen interviews with the former Oklahoma zookeeper, originally filmed for the Wolves and Warriors docuseries on America’s Animal Planet network in 2018.
The footage was shot just months before he was sentenced to serve 22 years in prison for a number of charges, including animal abuse and plotting to have his rival, animal rights activist Carole Baskin, killed off by a hitman, last year (19).
The upcoming show will follow the stories of the big cats rescued from his zoo, The Greater Wynnewood Exotic Animal Park, including partially-blind tigers Kryxis and Kadira, who had their vision restored with surgery after they were relocated to the Exotic Feline Rescue Center in Indiana.
It will also include chats with Exotic’s former employees, such as Saff Saffery, who lost an arm to one of his boss’ tigers.

“Surviving Joe Exotic” will air on July 25, four months after the success of Netflix’s docuseries “Tiger King: Murder, Mayhem and Madness”, which chronicled the murder-for-hire scandal.

Incarcerated 'Tiger King' Star Joe Exotic Unraveled to Be 'Scared to Death' of Big Cats

    Netflix

Rick Kirkham, the producer behind Netflix’s ‘Tiger King: Murder, Mayhem and Madness’, additionally recalls how ‘unbelievably cruel’ the Greater Wynnewood Exotic Animal Park’s former owner could be.
    Apr 13, 2020
AceShowbiz – Joe Exotic is “terrified of big cats”, according to “Tiger King” producer Rick Kirkham.
“Tiger King: Murder, Mayhem and Madness” debuted on Netflix last month, and focuses on incarcerated Oklahoma zoo boss Exotic, real name Joe Maldonado-Passage, and his plot to kill his bitter rival Carole Baskin.
It’s been a worldwide smash hit for the streaming service, with Joel McHale taking charge of a reunion special, “The Tiger King and I”, on Sunday night (April 12), which featured the return of some of the programme’s most loved characters, including producer Kirkham.
In his chat, Kirkham told McHale that despite his “Tiger King” nickname, Joe was actually petrified of big cats, and had them sedated whenever he had to get close to them for work.
“He was scared to death of lions and tigers,” Kirkham said. “In the shots you see where he’s in with the two tigers, the white one is blind and the other one is tranquilised. It’s idiotic to think how he’s become famous as ‘the tiger king’ when he’s so terrified of big cats.”
Kirkham also recounted a horrific story about the “unbelievably cruel” Joe, describing how he’d given reassurances to a tearful woman that he’d give her horse a “good life” on his property.
“Before she got off the park – he said, ‘Rick, roll your camera. Roll your camera. Come on, you’re gonna love this Rick’, – he walked up, pulled a gun out of his holster and shot the horse dead in the trailer and then cut it up with a chainsaw and then fed it to the tigers that day,” Kirkham recalled. He also claimed that Joe would kill the old tigers and “feed them right to the other tigers”.
Elsewhere in the reunion special, Jeff and Lauren Lowe, the couple who took over Joe’s Greater Wynnewood Exotic Animal Park, reflected on another allegation touched upon in the series – that Baskin killed her ex-husband Don Lewis and fed him to the tigers.
Asked whether or not he believed that Baskin murdered Lewis, Jeff replied: “There’s no question in my mind that she did it, and we’ve claimed that for years and years and years.”
“Abso-f**king-lutley,” his wife Lauren agreed emphatically.
Baskin has always vehemently denied having anything to do with Lewis’ disappearance. She said in an interview with the Tampa Times on Friday that she’s been receiving death threats herself since the show started streaming, and her publicist told Us Weekly that while she hadn’t been asked to be part of “The Tiger King and I”, she wouldn’t have participated anyway due to her portrayal in the programme.

'Tiger King' Becomes Netflix's Most Watched Show With 34M Viewers

    Netflix

The ‘Tiger King: Murder, Mayhem and Madness’ that revolves around the infamous tiger breeder Joe Exotic beats Netflix’s fan-favorite series ‘Stranger Things’.
    Apr 9, 2020
AceShowbiz – “Tiger King” has clawed its way to the top of Netflix’s viewing charts as one of the streaming service’s most watched original shows ever.
Released last month, March 2020, “Tiger King: Murder, Mayhem and Madness” follows the exploits of Joe Exotic, a prolific tiger breeder, who ran a popular illegal zoo in Oklahoma.
While the tiger lover was sentenced to 22 years in jail for plotting to kill animal rights activist Carole Baskin and other wildlife violations, the shocking programme was an instant hit with fans amid the coronavirus lockdown, having reached a U.S. TV audience of 34.3 million unique viewers within the first 10 days of its release, according to Nielsen estimates.
The figures, registered from March 20 to 29, 2020, top those for season two of Netflix hit “Stranger Things”, which scored 31.2 million viewers, and fell only slightly behind “Stranger Things 3”, which drew 36.3 million over the comparable 10-day span.
“Tiger King” has become a global phenomenon, with producers at 20th Century Fox reportedly in the early stages of planning a movie based on the series, with Orlando Bloom being eyed as leading man Joe.
Several other spin-off projects are also said to be in the works – one featuring “Saturday Night Live” star Kate McKinnon, who plans to play Baskin – including a “definitive sequel” to the show set to air on the Investigation Discovery channel.
Speaking to People magazine Joe’s former employee, Kelci ‘Saff’ Saffery, opened up on his boss’ fixation with his adversary.
“Carole was the first thing on his mind every morning and the last thing on his mind every night,” Kelci said.
John Finlay, Joe’s ex-husband, added, “Joe had a really bad hatred towards Carole Baskin and a lot of us knew it was going to head in a bad direction… A lot of people told him he needs to stop or slow down and think about what’s going on.”
However, in a phone interview with Netflix from jail following the success of the show, Joe insisted he’s “done with the Carole Baskin saga” and is looking ahead to being released from prison.

Orlando Bloom Eyed to Play Joe Exotic in New Movie

    WENN

The ‘Pirates of the Caribbean’ actor is reportedly hotly tipped as a top contender to portray the infamous tiger breeder who ran a popular illegal zoo in Oklahoma.
    Apr 9, 2020
AceShowbiz – Orlando Bloom is reportedly being eyed up to play Tiger King-turned-felon Joe Exotic in a new movie based on the hit real-life Netflix series.
Released last month, March 2020, “Tiger King: Murder, Mayhem and Madness” follows the exploits of Joe, a prolific tiger breeder, who ran a popular illegal zoo in Oklahoma.
While the tiger lover was sentenced to 22 years in jail for plotting to kill an animal rights activist and other wildlife violations, the shocking programme was an instant hit with fans amid the coronavirus lockdown.
According to Britain’s The Sun newspaper, producers at 20th Century Fox are in the early stages of planning a movie based on the series, and “Pirates of the Caribbean” star Orlando is reportedly producers’ top choice for the leading role.
“All filming is on lockdown at the moment but the studios are exploring projects they can get going on as soon as possible and they think Tiger King is the perfect story,” a movie insider said.
“The popularity of the series has been unprecedented and they think a film about it could be even more dramatic. The film could shed light on some details behind the scenes that were not shown in the Netflix series…They think he could really bring Joe to life on screen.”
“Tiger King” directors Eric Goode and Rebecca Chaikin claim to have recently spoken to Joe in prison, where he said he thought Brad Pitt or David Spade would be best suited to the role, while his ex-husband John Finlay tipped Shia LaBeouf or Channing Tatum for the part.
The movie won’t be the only spin-off based on the hit show – a TV series is already in development in the U.S. focusing on Joe’s adversary, animal rights activist Carole Baskin, who will be played by “Ghostbusters” actress Kate McKinnon.
According to People, Rob Lowe is also plotting a project inspired by the docuseries, and is re-teaming with his “9-1-1: Lone Star” creator Ryan Murphy to work on the show.
Meanwhile, the Investigation Discovery channel has ordered a “definitive sequel” to the show, titled “Strange World of Joe Exotic”, which will be told from Joe’s point of view alone and will explore whether Carole was involved in the disappearance of her second husband Don Lewis – something which she denies.
