As the golden beats of James Brown’s “Down and Out in New York City” flood the soundtrack, Malcolm (John David Washington), a rising-star filmmaker, dances exuberantly across his living-room. He and his girlfriend, Marie (Zendaya), have just returned from a successful premiere, and he’s high on acclaim and his own virtuosity. His peacocking, however, irritates Marie, who heads for the bathroom in a sulk. A former drug addict whose grueling experiences inspired Malcolm’s film, Marie is about to unload a wealth of resentment on her unsuspecting partner. First, though, she’ll have to listen to him, his joy evaporated, complain about critics who define him by his Blackness — a justifiable loathing of categorization that doesn’t prevent him, later in the film, from singling out one female Los Angeles Times critic for special scorn. That rant, an almost 10-minute scream-and-stomp tirade against, in part, the inadequacies of film criticism, isn’t the movie’s lowest point, only its most exhausting. (In Levinson’s script, the couple’s relationship woes are constantly competing with industry-related whining.) Malcolm may or may not be a megaphone for his director’s personal gripes, but Washington, a charismatically intense and supple performer, is ill-served by speeches that have the cadence and calculation of acting-school exercises.Zendaya, for her part, fares slightly better with a character who is more willing to be vulnerable. When Malcolm cruelly tells Marie she’s not special, listing all the damaged women he has known who could have served as inspiration, she is touchingly wounded. Yet she also senses the insecurities behind his swaggering egotism, smartly pointing out — given his educated, upper-middle-class background — the artifice of his underdog posturing.Fighting the metronomic beats of the movie’s equal-time speeches, Zendaya (who has the advantage of working with the crew and creator of her HBO show, “Euphoria”) allows us to glimpse the suffering that brought Marie to this point, and to this man. And while Marcell Rev’s high-contrast, black-and-white photography is often quite lovely — in one surreal shot, trees outside the home rear up like twisted, fairy-tale villains — only occasionally do his camera movements ease the claustrophobia of the stage-like setting.A stylized stab at pandemic filmmaking, “Malcolm & Marie,” is at once mildly admirable and deeply unlikable. Beneath the film’s Old-Hollywood gleam and self-conscious sniping, serious questions are raised, only to lie fallow. What obligation, if any, does an artist have to their muse? And how do we separate an artist’s work from their ethnicity?“I promise you, nothing productive is going to be said tonight,” Marie says near the beginning of the movie. Sadly, she’s telling the truth.Malcolm & MarieRated R for foul language, crude foreplay and toxic egotism. Running time: 1 hour 46 minutes. Zendaya Defends 12-Year Age Gap Between Her and 'Malcolm and Marie' Co-Star John David Washington

    Netflix

The ‘Spider-Man: Far From Home’ actress dismisses controversy over the age gap between her and onscreen love interest in new movie, claiming people still think that she’s a teenager.

    Jan 29, 2021
AceShowbiz – Zendaya insists the reason the 12-year age gap between her and “Malcolm & Marie” co-star John David Washington caused such a storm is because people still think she’s a teenager. The 36-year-old “Tenet” star and the 24-year-old “Euphoria” actress play the titular filmmaker and his girlfriend in the upcoming drama for Netflix.
And despite the fact that there are many more dramatic age gaps between actors on screen, the one between Zendaya and Washington hit more than a few headlines.
Reacting to the controversy during an interview with E!’s Daily Pop, Zendaya reflected that because she’s grown up on-screen, people still see her as a lot younger than she actually is.
“I’ve played a 16-year-old since I was 16,” she said. “You have to remember, also, people grew up with me as a child. It’s like watching, I guess, your younger sibling now, you know, they’re grown…So it’s hard for people to wrap around the idea that I am grown in real life. You know, even though I do play a teenager on television still.”

Zendaya’s comments come after Washington also opened up about the age gap recently, insisting he “wasn’t concerned” ahead of taking on the project.
“I wasn’t concerned about it because she is a woman,” he told Variety. “People are going to see in this film how much of a woman she is. She has far more experience than I do in the industry. I’ve only been in it for seven years. She’s been in it longer, so I’m learning from her. I’m the rookie.”
“I was leaning on her for a lot.”
“Some of the stories she’s shared about what she’s had to go through with Twitter and everything. I appreciated her wisdom and discernment when it comes to this business. I admire that.”

John David Washington Stands by Age Gap With 'Malcolm and Marie' Co-Star Zendaya: I'm the Rookie

    Netflix

The Sam Levinson-directed drama for Netflix has been met with backlash for pairing up the ‘Tenet’ actor and the ‘Euphoria’ actress despite their 12 years of age difference.

    Jan 14, 2021
AceShowbiz – John David Washington was not “concerned” about the 12-year age gap between him and his “Malcolm & Marie” co-star Zendaya Coleman.
The 36-year-old “Tenet” star and the 24-year-old “Euphoria” actress play the titular filmmaker and his girlfriend in the upcoming drama for Netflix.
And John has insisted Zendaya is a woman beyond her years and has “far more experience” in the movie industry than he does so he’s been “learning” a lot from her.
“I wasn’t concerned about it because she is a woman,” he told Variety. “People are going to see in this film how much of a woman she is. She has far more experience than I do in the industry. I’ve only been in it for seven years. She’s been in it longer, so I’m learning from her. I’m the rookie.”

Heaping praise on “The Greatest Showman” star and the flick’s director, Sam Levinson, for the “versatility” they brought to the film, he added, “What I’m really excited for people to see when the film is released – they’re going to see how mature she is in this role. We’re talking about versatility, and Sam and Zendaya brought both.”
The two stars quietly shot the film in Carmel, California, from June 17 to July 2, 2020, after Zendaya contacted “Euphoria” showrunner Sam to ask him if he could write and direct a movie during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Within six days, he had written the story – which is said to have “echoes of” Netflix’s “Marriage Story” and features a number of social themes being experienced during the pandemic – and had John in mind to star opposite Zendaya.

    Netflix

Netflix makes the deal at this year’s Toronto International Film Festival where the streaming giant makes several splashy deals for ‘Bruised’ and ‘Pieces of a Woman’.
    Sep 14, 2020
AceShowbiz – It has been reported that Netflix has acquired the worldwide rights to Sam Levinson’s “Malcolm & Marie” movie starring Zendaya Coleman and John David Washington. According to Deadline, the streaming giant wrapped up a deal near $30 million to get the rights. The deal was negotiated by Endeavor Content and CAA.
“I am so grateful to this cast and crew, many of whom are my ‘Euphoria’ family, for coming together during such uncertain times. We felt privileged to be able to make this film together and we did so with a lot of love. We are all thrilled that it has ended up with Netflix which is unparalleled in allowing filmmakers the freedom to tell their stories that reach audiences all over the world,” Levinson, who wrote and produced the film, said in a statement.
“Malcolm & Marie” stars John David as a filmmaker. His girlfriend (Zendaya) returns home following a celebratory movie premiere, and expecting to celebrate success. However, revelations about their relationships begin to surface, putting the strength of their love on a test.
The drama was shot during the production lockdown from June 17 to July 2 in Carmel, California, on 35mm in black and white with help from Fotokem, marking the first post-pandemic film to complete production. Kevin Turen and Ashley Levinson serve as producer, while Zendaya, John David, Yariv Milchan, Michael Schaefer, Will Greenfield, Aaron L. Gilbert and Scott Mescudi are credited as executive producers.
Netflix makes the deal at this year’s Toronto International Film Festival where Netflix makes several splashy deals. During the largely virtual affair, the streamer paid $20 million for global rights to Halle Berry’s directorial debut “Bruised”. It also bought “Pieces of a Woman”, a drama starring Vanessa Kirby and Shia LaBeouf as couple shattered by the loss of their newborn baby.
