  • Ming-Na Wen Lets Slips Which 'Mulan' Role She Had to Give Up Due to 'Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.'

    Walt Disney Pictures

Though forced to turn down the month-long job because of her work commitment, the actress voicing Mulan in the 1998 movie reveals how director Niki Caro secured her involvement in the remake.
    Sep 8, 2020
AceShowbiz – Ming-Na Wen’s role in “Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.” cost her a much bigger part in Disney’s “Mulan” remake.
The actress, who voiced Mulan in the 1998 animated movie, surprised fans over the weekend – when the live-action blockbuster was finally released on streaming site Disney+ – by making a cameo at the end of the film, but she reveals she was offered a much bigger part.
“I was going to be the potential mother-in-law for the matchmaker scene,” she tells the New York Times.
But she had to turn down the job because she couldn’t commit to a month-long shoot.
“They (Disney bosses) needed me to be out there for a month just in case,” she explains, adding her “Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.” TV producers wouldn’t let her be out of action for so long.
“(They) just threw up their hands (and said), ‘We can’t lose you for a month!’ ” Ming-Na adds. “I totally understood, and I’m always very Zen about this stuff. I said, ‘Look, if it was meant to be, it was meant to be. We all tried, and it’s too bad.’ ”
But director Niki Caro refused to pass up the chance to work with the original Mulan and came up with another idea.
“(They) came up with this great idea, where instead of shooting an entire scene, I’d just make a cameo at the very end to announce Mulan to the emperor,” the actress reveals. “I thought that was very appropriate and just wonderful, a little Easter egg where I could pass the baton. And this time, they only needed me there for a week. So it all worked out!”

  • Yoson An Divulges Long Process to Land Coveted Role in 'Mulan'

    Walt Disney Pictures

The Macanese-New Zealander actor reveals he thought he had failed to nab the role of Chen Hongui in Disney’s live-adaptation remake after he didn’t hear back in one year.
    Sep 7, 2020
AceShowbiz – Actor Yoson An had to wait almost two years to learn if he’d won the role of Chen Hongui in Disney’s “Mulan” remake.
During an interview with The Laughing Place, the star revealed the lengthy process from when he first heard about the live-action movie, which is now streaming on Disney+, to securing the coveted role.
“I think it was back in 2015, or even late 2014, when I heard through the grapevine that Niki (Caro) was set to direct this, and I was walking back home one day, scrolling through my phone, I was like, ‘Hey, wouldn’t it be cool if I was involved in this film?’ ” Yoson revealed.
“Fast forward to 2016, I did the tape, put it down, sent it through, and I didn’t hear back for a whole year.”
Yoson was convinced he hadn’t done enough to impress, explaining, “After a couple months, I’m like, ‘I didn’t get this. There’s no way I got this…’ But then literally a year later I get an email from my agent going, ‘Hey, remember that tape you put down a year ago? Disney wants to see you again.’ ”
Yoson met Niki and casting director Debra Zane over Skype and then was flown to Los Angeles for an in-person audition.
“I didn’t hear back for another nine months,” he laughed. “One day, I sat down at my agent’s office, and my lovely coach, Mike, sat down with me, and he was like, ‘You got it, bud. You got it.’ And I was like, ‘Really? Really?’ And everything just started unfolding from there. Bit of a long story.”
“Mulan”, which stars Liu Yifei as the titular heroine, premiered in Hollywood in March but a wider theatrical release has been repeatedly delayed due to the coronavirus crisis.
The movie is now available to view on Disney+ in countries where the streaming service is available, including the U.S. and U.K.

The production on the new movie ‘Geechee’ has been halted following a shooting incident involving local police in the Dominican Republic due to a case of mistaken identity.
    Sep 7, 2020
AceShowbiz – The set of Andrea Riseborough’s new movie “Geechee” in the Dominican Republic has been locked down following a shooting incident involving local police.
Sources tell Deadline, one unidentified crew member was shot several times in what several outlets are calling a case of mistaken identity.
The gunshot victim suffered minor injuries and has been flown out of the country. No one else was seriously injured.
The incident took place on Wednesday evening (02Sep20) after undercover local drug enforcement agents opened fire on cars transporting the film’s crew to and from a location near Lantica Pinewood Dominican Republic Studios.
The agents then showed up at the studios and held various crew members at gunpoint until it was established everyone was innocent, according to reports.
The production was shut down on Thursday and remains closed as producers determine whether filming will continue in the Dominican Republic.
The project began filming on 19 August (20), and has four weeks left to shoot.
“Lantica Media has requested a thorough investigation from the national authorities,” a statement from the studio reads. “The authorities have been co-operative and are working to ensure that a similar incident does not happen again in the future. For Lantica Media, the top priority is to guarantee the safety and well-being of its productions, this being the first time that an event of this nature has occurred in any of the 50 plus productions serviced by Lantica since its inception.”
Riseborough is leading the cast of the film, co-produced by Jamie Foxx.

  • Bradley Cooper Calls Hollywood Awards 'Utterly Meaningless'

    WENN

Despite receiving multiple prestigious awards, the ‘A Star Is Born’ actor is not really a fan of the Hollywood prize-giving events as he thinks they are unnecessary.
    Sep 7, 2020
AceShowbiz – Multi-award winning actor Bradley Cooper has slammed Hollywood’s annual prizegiving as “utterly meaningless.”
The star tells Interview Magazine, in a joint chat with his “A Star Is Born” co-star Anthony Ramos, that an artistic production of any kind is a truly a collaborative effort – insisting singling someone out from an artistic project like a film can make it difficult to stay grounded.
Ramos, who also starred in Lin Manuel’s original production of “Hamilton”, both off-Broadway and on Broadway, set up the conversation by discussing what he believes to be the typical mindset after being nominated.
“It’s about me. I’m the only one here from my cast, so it’s only me,” Ramos said, prompting the sarcastic response, “I must be special,” from Cooper.
“That awards season stuff is a real test. It’s set up to foster that mentality. It’s quite a thing to work through, and it’s completely devoid of artistic creation,” he adds. “It’s not why you sacrifice everything to create art, and yet you spend so much time being a part of it if you’re, in quotes, ‘lucky enough to be a part of it.’ ”
“It’s ultimately a great thing because it really does make you face ego, vanity, and insecurity. It’s very interesting and utterly meaningless.”
Some of Cooper’s many award nominations includes eight Academy Award nods, eight BAFTAs, and six Golden Globes, resulting in one win – the BAFTA for Best Film Music, which he shared with co-star Lady Gaga.
He also won two Grammys for Best Pop Duo/Group Performance and Best Compilation Soundtrack for Visual Media for the song “Shallow” from “A Star Is Born”.

  • Ray Fisher Claps Back at Studio Bosses as He Denies Being Uncooperative in Joss Whedon Investigation

    WENN

The Cyborg depicter has fired back at Warner Brothers, accusing the studio bosses of smear campaign and denying being uncooperative in Whedon misconduct investigation.
    Sep 7, 2020
AceShowbiz – Actor Ray Fisher has clapped back at claims from Warner Bros. bosses that he’s not cooperating with an investigation into misconduct claims he made “Justice League” director Joss Whedon.
Back in July (20), Fisher aired his grievances against the filmmaker, accusing him of “abusive and unprofessional” behaviour.
The Cyborg actor’s claims have since caused Warner Bros. to launch a misconduct investigation into Whedon and Geoff Johns and Jon Berg, producers of the 2017 flick.
According to a statement released by studio executives, Fisher has not been cooperating with an independent third party investigator, who was hired at his request – allegations he’s refuted.
Taking to social media, the star hit back at the company’s statement while thanking fans on Twitter for their continued support.
“Thank you all for the support and for seeing through @wbpictures desperate and scattershot attempt to discredit me to continue protecting those in power. I met with the investigator via Zoom on Aug 26th. Below is an email I sent to my team and @sagaftra immediately after,” Ray tweeted on Saturday.
In the email that Ray sent to his team, he said that he ended the interview early because he felt he needed to consult with his team before proceeding with the call.
Ray added, “It’s also worth noting that I made it clear to the world on Aug 21st that I would be vetting the investigator to ensure a fair and protected process for all witnesses. @wbpictures has escalated this to an entirely different level, but I’m ready to meet the challenge.”
Officials from the studio have yet to respond to Fisher’s latest comments.

In the film, “The Crown” star plays Martha – a woman who loses her baby during a home birth. However, as she’s not a mother herself, Vanessa was unsure how to tackle the 26-minute birth scene.
