  • Steve McQueen Delighted 'Mangrove' Selected to Open 2020 BFI London Film Festival

    M Glow Pictures

This Letitia Wright-starring movie tells the true story of the Mangrove Nine, a group of black activists who clashed with London police officers during a protest march in 1970.
    Aug 25, 2020
AceShowbiz – Steve McQueen’s latest movie “Mangrove” is to open this year’s BFI London Film Festival.
The movie, which stars Letitia Wright, Shaun Parkes and Malachi Kirby, tells the true story of the Mangrove Nine, a group of black activists who clashed with London police officers during a protest march in 1970. The subsequent trial was the first time racial hatred within the police was officially acknowledged in court in the U.K.
McQueen and bosses at the British Film Institute (BFI) announced the movie will receive its European premiere as the event’s opening film on October 7.

The director says in a statement: “I couldn’t be happier that Mangrove will open this year’s BFI London Film Festival. Although the themes are universal, Mangrove is a London story. It may have happened 50 years ago, but it’s as relevant today as it was then.”
The movie, one of five in McQueen’s “Small Axe” anthology he is creating for the BBC, will be shown for free to festival ticket holders in cinemas across the U.K. as part of the London Film Festival’s offerings amid the Covid-19 pandemic. “Mangrove” and 11 other new films from the programme will screen in previews across Britain in participating cinemas, while more than 55 films will have virtual premieres online.
“Mangrove” will debut on the BBC later in the autumn.

  • Berlin Film Festival to Implement Gender Neutrality for Its Acting Awards

Other changes include the renaming of the Silver Bear Alfred Bauer Prize as a response to allegations linking film historian and former BIFF director Bauer to the Nazi movement.
    Aug 25, 2020
AceShowbiz – The organisers of the Berlin International Film Festival have decided their acting awards will no longer be attached to gender.
The prizegiving, which concludes the annual German festival, will feature Silver Bear honours, previously divided into actor and actress categories, for Best Leading Performance and Best Supporting Performance.
“We believe that not separating the awards in the acting field according to gender comprises a signal for a more gender-sensitive awareness in the film industry,” event directors Mariette Rissenbeek and Carlo Chatrian said.
Meanwhile, among other festival changes, an award formally known as the Silver Bear Alfred Bauer Prize has been renamed following allegations linking film historian and former BIFF director Bauer to the Nazi movement. The honour will now be referred to as the Silver Bear Jury Prize.
The BIFF is scheduled to run from February 11 to 18, 2021.

  • Taron Egerton Calls Wolverine Casting Speculation Groundless Rumors

    Instagram

Though he was quick to set the record straight, the ‘Rocketman’ actor admits that he could not help but be flattered by the suggestion that he is being lined up to replace Hugh Jackman.
    Aug 25, 2020
AceShowbiz – Taron Egerton has denied rumours he’s being lined up to replace Hugh Jackman in the role of X-Men’s Wolverine.
Hugh announced he was stepping away from the role after playing the self-healing superhero for a ninth time in 2017’s “Logan”.
Fans have linked Taron to the role, but the “Rocketman” star insists there’s no truth to the speculation – even though he is flattered to be picked by some as the Aussie actor’s successor.
“That anyone thinks I would be good for the part is really flattering. I love Marvel, but it’s just fan stuff. There is no grounding for those rumours,” he tells GQ Hype.

The star is currently more concerned that the local theatre in Wales where he learnt his craft may be under threat as it has been forced to close during the COVID-19 pandemic.
“I’ve wanted to get back on stage for a long time and when something’s not there, you want it more,” he explains. “London theatre is a huge part of its economy and character, but what’s more alarming is provincial theatre.”
“For somebody like me, who came up through Aberystwyth Arts Centre, if that facility dies, my little sisters won’t have that opportunity and that’s really tragic.”
He has, however, enjoyed spending time at home following a hectic 2019 that saw him win plaudits and awards for his portrayal of Elton John in his biopic, “Rocketman”.
“As much as I enjoyed last year, with all the craziness, it’s nice to step away from the limelight,” he continues. “I’ve enjoyed being in my hometown. I feel like a member of a community.”

  • Emily Blunt Rumored to Replace Amber Heard as Mera in 'Aquaman' Sequel

    WENN/DC Entertainment

Amid the bad press due to her ongoing messy divorce battle with Johnny Depp, the ‘London Fields’ actress may be replaced by the ‘Mary Poppins Returns’ star in the ‘Aquaman’ sequel.
    Aug 25, 2020
AceShowbiz – The “Aquaman” sequel could see a new face as Mera. Words are Warner Bros. are considering to replace Amber Heard with Emily Blunt in the follow-up to the superhero film amid the former’s ongoing messy divorce battle with her ex Johnny Depp.
News of Heard’s possible firing from the DC franchise has been on the rounds on for months now and was first reported by We Got This Covered, which also got the tidbit about Blunt being a contender to take over the role. Back in February, the site claimed that studio execs wanted to recast the role of Mera due to the bad press surrounding Heard and the huge number of fans who are now turning against her.
Heard has been embroiled in a legal drama with her former husband Depp, whom she accused of domestic violence during their marriage. Depp paid Heard a settlement of US$7 million, which she donated to the ACLU and the Children’s Hospital Los Angeles.
Later in 2019, Depp sued Heard for defamation after she wrote an op-ed for The Washington Post in which she made a claim about being a victim of domestic abuse and alluded to allegations she made against Depp in their explosive 2016 divorce.
More details of the ex-couple’s nasty split were recently uncovered during Depp’s libel trial against U.K. tabloid The Sun and its publisher News Group Newspapers (NGN). While the tabloid branded the “Pirates of the Caribbean” actor a “wife-beater” in a 2018 article, fellow stars like Javier Bardem, Penelope Cruz and Winona Ryder have defended Depp in his defamation lawsuit against Heard.
As for Blunt, the actress received nominations for her role in 2018’s “Mary Poppins Returns” and won an SAG Award for best supporting actress for her performance in “A Quiet Place”, which was directed by her husband John Krasinski. The British actress returns for the sequel, “A Quiet Place Part II”, which release has been postponed to April 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

  • 'Black Adam' FanDome Teaser Shows Birth of Dwayne Johnson's Anti-Hero Character

    [embedded content]

Besides sharing the concept art of his upcoming movie, the wrestler-turned-actor confirms that the Justice Society of America characters Hawkman, Dr. Fate and Cyclone will be appearing in the film along with Atom Smasher.
    Aug 24, 2020
AceShowbiz – This weekend’s DC FanDome also gave comic book fans a tease of Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson’s upcoming movie “Black Adam”. A teaser of the movie features animated concept drawings that explain the birth of the titular anti-hero.
“5,000 years ago, Kahndaq was a melting pot of magic and powers,” Johnson narrates the video that shows the fictional nation of Kahndaq. “Most of us had nothing except the chains around our necks. Kahndaq needed a hero; instead they got me. I did what needed to be done…and they imprisoned me for it.”
The teaser shows Black Adam breaking free and also unveils his costume. “Now, 5000 years later, I’m free. And I give you my word…no one will ever stop me again,” Johnson continues in voiceover as the concept art features his character sitting on a throne.
During the virtual event, Johnson also confirmed that Justice Society of America characters Hawkman, Dr. Fate and Cyclone will be appearing in the film along with Atom Smasher, who will be portrayed by Noah Centineo. Concept art of each character has also been shared online.
“Before the Justice League was formed – the original ‘golden’ superhero team of DC Comics was JSA – Justice Society of America,” the “Rampage” star wrote along with the concept art posted on his Instagram page. “It’s our privilege to build out our universe and bring these golden superheroes to life in BLACK ADAM. This’ll be a fun movie to make!”
He went on hyping up the team’s appearance in the film, “As righteous, respected and as powerful as they are – they will all still come to understand, there’s only one code of justice the man in black lives by. His own. Truth, Justice and the Black Adam way.”

Answering a fan question, Johnson said that he’d like to see Black Adam teaming up with Wonder Woman or Superman. “It might be cool to hang out with Superman,” he coyly said without confirming if those characters will be featured in the film. “Because of our strengths and speed; Black Adam and Superman could become friends..or they won’t.”
Centineo joined Johnson in the video, explaining the background of his character Atom Smasher, “His grandfather was a villain, he’s got quite a spirit. He goes through this transformation in the film; he’s not expecting the world of a superhero.”
“Black Adam” has Jaume Collet-Serra on board as director. The film is slated to arrive December 2021.

  • Ellie Goulding Would Love to Try Out Acting in West End

    Instagram

The ‘Burn’ singer is keen to branch out and launch an acting career by starting out on a stage show in the West End theatre before venturing into onscreen role.
    Aug 24, 2020
AceShowbiz – British pop star Ellie Goulding is keen to launch a career in acting.
The “Burn” hitmaker told U.K. tabloid The Sun she’d love to reinvent her career as she reflected on how much she’d enjoyed acting onstage as a kid.
“I acted a lot when I was young and I really enjoyed it. I loved playing different characters.,” Ellie, 33, explained. “It’s probably a very different kind of confidence from being on stage. But I’d like to see if I’ve still got it.”
“I would probably be in a play. I’ve seen a lot of plays in the last couple of years in London and I’d like to start there,” the star mused.
Ellie went on to confess she didn’t feel a blockbuster movie would be the right choice for her to start with – despite musical peers like Rita Ora and Rihanna already venturing into that territory successfully.
Despite her ambitions, the star is still firmly rooted in her music career. Ellie released her latest album, the U.K. chart topping “Brightest Blue”, last month (Jul20).
