  • 'Candyman' Director Nia DaCosta In Talks for 'Captain Marvel 2'

    Instagram/Marie H Nguyen

The female director who helmed the new ‘Candyman’ reboot has been in negotiations with Marvel chiefs to sit behind the lens for the upcoming ‘Captain Marvel’ sequel.
    Aug 7, 2020
AceShowbiz – Nia DaCosta, the director of the new “Candyman” reboot, will reportedly take the reins on Marvel’s forthcoming “Captain Marvel” sequel.
The first movie, which starred Brie Larson as the iconic comic book character, was directed by duo Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck and made $1.13 billion at the global box office.
According to Deadline, Marvel chiefs have been taking meetings with prospective directors for the sequel over the past few months and have decided on DaCosta to take over from the pair, directing from a script by WandaVision story editor Megan McDonnell.
If her hiring is confirmed, it means the 30-year-old will be helming the biggest budget movie ever made by a black female filmmaker as its cost will likely dwarf the $115 million (£87.4 million) budget of Ava DuVernay’s “A Wrinkle in Time”.
The reported move would continue Marvel’s push to increase the diversity of its stable of directors, with Asian-American Chloe Zhao taking charge of “The Eternals” franchise.
DaCosta is a rising star in Hollywood, following her critically acclaimed indie movie “Little Woods”, with Jordan Peele, picking her to direct his Candyman reboot – a film whose trailer has made waves on social media even though its release has been delayed due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

  • 'Kindergarten Cop' Screening Canceled Following Accusation of Romanticizing Over-Policing

    Universal Pictures

A planned drive-in screening of the Arnold Schwarzenegger-starring movie in Portland, Oregon is pulled after an author claims that the 1990 film glorifies the traumatization of children by police.
    Aug 6, 2020
AceShowbiz – “Kindergarten Cop” is under scrutiny amid the protests of police brutality in the U.S. as part of the Black Lives Matter movement. A planned outdoor screening of the Arnold Schwarzenegger-starring movie in Portland, Oregon has been canceled following accusation that the movie romanticizes over-policing.
The 1990 film was selected by the NW Film Center to open a “Cinema Unbound” summer drive-in movie series at Zidell Yards. The choice was made to honor “its importance in Oregon filmmaking history” along with a tie-in to its 30th anniversary.
However, NWFC has had a change of heart after a complaint about how the film is exploitative and has no comedic or redeeming qualities. Portland author Lois Leveen went on a Twitter rant to point out her issue with the film, comparing it to “Gone with the Wind” which was recently pulled from HBO Max after claims that it romanticizes slavery.
“What’s so funny about School-to-Prison pipeline? Kindergarten Cop-Out: Tell @nwfilmcenterthere’s nothing fun in cops traumatizing kids. National reckoning on overpolicing is a weird time to revive Kindergarten Cop. IRL, we are trying to end school-to-prison pipeline,” she began. “There’s nothing entertaining about the presence of police in schools, which feeds the ‘school-to-prison’ pipeline in which African American, Latinx, and other kids of color are criminalized rather than educated.”
“5- and 6-year-olds are handcuffed and hauled off to jail routinely in this country. And this criminalizing of children increases dramatically when cops are assigned to work in schools,” the left-leaning author continued. “Yes, KINDERGARTEN COP is only a movie. So are BIRTH OF A NATION and GONE WITH THE WIND, but we recognize films like those are not ‘good family fun,’ ” she added. “They are relics of how pop culture feeds racist assumptions. KINDERGARTEN COP romanticizes over-policing in the U.S.”
Responding to the criticism, NWFC has since replaced “Kindergarten Cop” with documentary “John Lewis: Good Trouble”, in honor of the late congressman. NWFC, however, claimed that the cancellation of “Kindergarten Cop” drive-in screening had nothing to do with the tweets and instead credited “overwhelming demand” and with its “staff and community members” for the change.
Lois later slammed the organization for failing to acknowledge its blunder. “I think what you meant to type was, ‘Yes, we made a grave error in not realizing the implicit racism in that programming decision. We apologize and are rethinking who makes our programming decisions hereafter,’ ” she tweeted. “How deep a white normativity hole will @nwfilmcenter keep digging?”

    WENN

If the ‘Bridge of Spies’ actor is signed on for the upcoming big-screen project, he will reunite with Robert Zemeckis who directed him in ‘Forrest Gump’ and ‘Cast Away’.
    Aug 6, 2020
AceShowbiz – Tom Hanks is set for yet another nice-guy role in Disney and director Robert Zemeckis’ live-action “Pinocchio” revamp.
The Oscar winner, who is known as the nicest man in Hollywood, is in early negotiations to play the titular puppet boy’s father, Geppetto.
Disney bosses wanted Hanks for the role of the woodworker when Paul King was attached to direct, but the actor’s schedule didn’t allow for the project at the time.
Deadline sources claim Hanks has now seen the script and he and director Zemeckis have spoken about the role.
They both won Oscars for “Forrest Gump” and they have since worked together on movie hits “Cast Away” and “The Polar Express”.
Next up for Hanks will be filmmaker Baz Luhrmann’s Elvis Presley biopic, in which the actor will portray music svengali Colonel Tom Parker.

  • Zoe Saldana Regrets Darkening Her Skin to Play Nina Simone in Biopic

    RLJ Entertainment

The ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ actress is ‘so sorry’ for playing the female jazz icon in the 2016 biopic, saying she should have given the role to a dark-skinned actress.
    Aug 6, 2020
AceShowbiz – Zoe Saldana has apologised for darkening her skin to play jazz great Nina Simone in a 2016 biopic.
The “Guardians of the Galaxy” star’s casting in “Nina” was attacked by critics, who felt she was the wrong choice for the role.
They also blasted the light-skinned black actress for wearing a full body suit, prosthetic nose, and false teeth to capture Simone’s look.
Zoe defended her casting at the time but later apologised to fans of Simone when the film flopped, accepting she could have made better choices with her portrayal.
And now, in an emotional new livestream published on her Instagram page, the actress accepts she “should never have played” Simone.
“I should have done everything in my power with the leverage that I had 10 years ago… I should have tried everything in my power to cast a black woman to play an exceptionally perfect black woman,” she said.
“I thought back then that I had the permission because I was a black woman – and I am. But it’s Nina, and Nina had a life and a journey that should be honoured to the most specific detail because she was a specifically detailed individual… She deserved better, and I am so sorry.”
The film was previously attacked by Nina Simone’s daughter, Lisa Simone Kelly, who said the project was “not how you want your loved ones remembered.”

  • 'Mulan' to Get Disney Plus Release in September

    Walt Disney Pictures

Disney CEO Bob Chapek claims that the Niki Caro-directed reboot will be released in theaters on the same day in countries where the streaming platform is not yet available.
    Aug 5, 2020
AceShowbiz – Disney’s live-action “Mulan” reboot will no longer be premiering in cinemas.
Bosses at the studio have decided to release the much-anticipated film on the Disney Plus streaming platform from September 4 at a cost of $30 to viewers.
“We thought it was important to find alternative ways to bring this film out in a timely manner,” Disney CEO Bob Chapek says, revealing in countries where Disney Plus is not yet available, “Mulan” will be released in theaters on the same day.
Mulan was originally scheduled to open in theaters in America on March 27, but the COVID crisis and the shutdown of cinemas forced movie chiefs to pull the film from the calendar.
The “Mulan” release won’t affect the roll-outs of Disney blockbusters “The New Mutants” and “Black Widow”, which are still scheduled to hit cinemas on August 28 and November 6, respectively, according to Rolling Stone.

  • Ryan Reynolds Shares His Cut of 'Green Lantern' for 'Justice League' Crossover

    Warner Bros. Pictures

Prior to posting the re-edited version of his 2011 movie, the ‘Deadpool’ actor teases that he may be in Zack Snyder’s cut of the 2017 superhero ensemble film.
    Aug 5, 2020
AceShowbiz – Ryan Reynolds is making use of his editing skills to put a twist on one of his infamous films. While he is now part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe through his portrayal of Deadpool after Disney’s acquisition of 20th Century Fox, the Canadian actor apparently still wants his place in the DCEU.
The 43-year-old hunk, who for years has poked fun at the “Green Lantern” major flop, is bringing up his inglorious past to claim his part in “Justice League”. On Tuesday, August 4, he shared his cut of the 2011 movie that features Ben Affleck’s Batman, Henry Cavill’s Superman, Gal Gadot’s Wonder Woman, Jason Momoa’s Aquaman, Ray Fisher’s Cyborg as well as Ezra Miller’s The Flash.
“Here’s the secret Reynolds Cut of GL you all haven’t been waiting for. In order to make it as great as possible we made some judicious cuts,” he wrote in the caption, though the word “judicious” was used as a joke since the clip reduces the 2-hour runtime to less than 30 seconds.

Prior to posting the re-edited version of “Green Lantern”, Reynolds teased that he might be in Zack Snyder’s cut of “Justice League” while debunking rumors that he would portay Hawkman in “Black Adam”.
“I’m not playing Hawkman in Black Adam. Although I generally do whatever the hell @TheRock tells me to do,” he tweeted earlier on Tuesday. “I would however love to be in Zack Snyder’s Justice League movie and I’ve heard I may already be in it? #SnyderCut.”
Responding to the Canadian actor’s denial of his involvement in “Black Adam”, Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, who will take on the title character in the upcoming movie, jokingly insisted, “You ARE playing Hawkman and that’s that.”
The wrestler-turned-actor went on trolling Reynolds, “You’re also Deadpool, Green Lantern (when you want because you own the intellectual property), you’re in the Zack Snyder JL movie and you’re also @KevinHart4real’s dad. Like in real life, as per your blood test.”

Dwayne Johnson responded to Ryan Reynolds’ tweet.
Reynolds is currently leading the “Deadpool” franchise, though Disney has not given an official green light to a third movie yet. Meanwhile, the “Snyder Cut”, which is the director’s version of the superhero film, is scheduled to be released on HBO Max in the first half of 2021.

“Black Is King” ‘s fashion curator Zerina Akers opened up about working on the project during an interview with Entertainment Tonight, telling the outlet that she had to come prepared with suitcases upon suitcases of clothes for the former Destiny’s Child star.
Revealing Beyonce had 63 outfit changes, Akers said, “You have to be prepared. If she says, ‘I just want to shoot, I think it would be really nice in a T-shirt,’ I’m like, OK, 10 ball gowns, please. Just in case! Because more likely than not, we get there and it’s like, ‘Oh, it’s so beautiful, we need something more grand.’ And we kind of allow it to shape-shift.”
Akers also had to ensure that she had lots of outfit choices for Beyonce’s eight-year-old daughter Blue, who also features in the visual album.
