  • Sam Rockwell to Re-Record New Merle Haggard's Songs If He Lands Lead Role in Biopic

    WENN

‘The Best of Enemies’ director Robin Bissell will take the helming duty as the country crooner’s widow Theresa Haggard helps with the adaptation of his memoir, ‘Sing Me Back Home’.
    Jul 28, 2020
AceShowbiz – Oscar winner Sam Rockwell is in talks to portray country legend Merle Haggard in a new film the singer’s widow is helping to adapt from her late husband’s memoir, “Sing Me Back Home”.
Robin Bissell will direct the film and work with Theresa Haggard on the script, while Deadline sources claim Rockwell will re-record Merle’s 1960s songs for the soundtrack if he signs on.
Bissell directed Rockwell in last year’s “The Best of Enemies”.
The Haggard film will detail the singer/songwriter’s rise from San Quentin Prison inmate to the country star Kris Kristofferson once called “the greatest artist in American music history”.
Haggard was a teen tearaway, who escaped juvenile facilities across California and racked up crime after crime, eventually finding himself at San Quentin for Johnny Cash’s famous concert at the prison.
Upon his release, Merle vowed to focus on music as a career and turned his back on crime.
If Rockwell is confirmed for the role, it won’t be the first time the actor has portrayed a real person onscreen – he played Bob Fosse in the TV drama “Fosse/Verdon”, C.P. Ellis in “The Best of Enemies”, Chuck Barris in “Confessions of a Dangerous Mind”, and George W. Bush in “Vice (2018)”.

  • 'Tenet' Gets Worldwide Release Date After Four Delays Caused by Coronavirus Pandemic

    Warner Bros.

The much-anticipated new film from Christopher Nolan will hit the cinemas in a number of other countries first before it opens in the States in early September.
    Jul 28, 2020
AceShowbiz – Christopher Nolan’s much-anticipated new film “Tenet” has finally landed a release date after four attempts to hit cinemas amid the coronavirus clampdown.
The film will hit screens in over 70 countries on 26 August, in Canada on 27 August and in the U.S. on 3 September.
Nolan’s “Interstellar” will also mark its 10th anniversary with a re-release around the same time.
Croatia, Denmark, Egypt, Estonia, Finland, Indonesia, Italy, Slovakia, Sweden, Switzerland, Turkey, Ukraine and the U.K. are among the countries that will get to see “Tenet” first.
It is also scheduled for release in Kazakhstan and Russia on 10 September and in Japan the following week.

The film was pulled from the Warner Bros. release calendar last week (ends July 24) as movie bosses considered scrapping plans to release the film globally and traditionally on the same day because so many cinemas remain closed due to the COVID crisis.
“Our goals throughout this process have been to ensure the highest odds of success for our films while also being ready to support our theatre partners with new content as soon as they could safely reopen,” Toby Emmerich, the chairman of Warner Bros. Pictures Group said in a statement.
“We’re grateful for the support we’ve received from exhibitors and remain steadfast in our commitment to the theatrical experience around the world.”
“Unfortunately, the pandemic continues to proliferate, causing us to reevaluate our release dates. Amidst all this continued uncertainty, we have decided to vacate the current dates for our next two releases. We will share a new 2020 release date imminently for ‘Tenet’, Christopher Nolan’s wholly original and mind-blowing feature. We are not treating ‘Tenet’ like a traditional global day-and-date release, and our upcoming marketing and distribution plans will reflect that.”

  • Zack Snyder Insists He Would Set Joss Whedon's 'Justice League' Footage on Fire

    WENN

The ‘Man of Steel’ director, who handed the reins of the 2017 superhero film to Whedon following a family tragedy, is currently working on a cut that will offer fans his vision for the movie.
    Jul 27, 2020
AceShowbiz – “Justice League” director Zack Snyder was so unimpressed with Joss Whedon’s take on his superhero blockbuster he would rather destroy his film before using the footage released.
Snyder, who handed the reins of the film to Joss after a family tragedy forced him to step away from the director’s chair, is currently working on a cut that will offer fans his vision for the movie and he admits he thinks Whedon’s film was below par.
“I would destroy the movie,” the director told the fan-organised virtual Justice-Con panel over the weekend. “I would set it on fire before I use a single frame that I did not photograph. I would literally blow that f**king thing up.”

Meanwhile, the ‘Snyder Cut’ of the film is expected to eventually arrive on streaming service HBO Max, with a running time close to four hours.
“I famously advertised the runtime at 214 minutes,” Snyder told Beyond the Trailer’s Grace Randolph. “Now, in its current state, it’s going to end up being longer than that yet… (It’s) exciting to bring all this new material to the fans.”
No release date has been confirmed.

  • Dave Franco's 'The Rental' Dominates Weekend Box Office Amid Coronavirus Pandemic

    Black Bear Pictures

The horror film, which marks the directorial debut of Alison Brie’s actor husband, grabs over $420,800 from 251 select theaters and drive-ins across the country.
    Jul 27, 2020
AceShowbiz – Dave Franco’s directorial debut has topped the U.S. box office.
Horror movie “The Rental”, which stars the actor/filmmaker’s wife Alison Brie, grabbed over $420,800 (£328,900) over its launch weekend from 251 theatres.
“I have been truly fortunate to have a partner in IFC Films whose agility and creativity during this time has allowed us to have this incredible moment for our film,” Franco says in a statement. “As a first time filmmaker, I’m beyond grateful to the audiences who supported us this weekend.”
IFC Films executive vice-president of film acquisitions and production, Arianna Bocco, tells Deadline, “We acquired this movie when we already knew there was a (cinema) shutdown, and when we pitched Dave… and everyone our plan, we weren’t going to let the virus control (it). We’re going to do the best that we can in a hybrid drive-in, PVOD (premium video on demand) model. We treated the film as we would with any other title… doing press. We had the first pop-up premiere in LA, and we thought outside the box. The one goal was to get as many people to see the movie and the result was best case scenario, and we couldn’t be more thrilled.”
Bocco went on to praise drive-in theaters, where the film was a huge hit.
Classic films “The Karate Kid”, “The Goonies” and “Jurassic Park” also enjoyed a big weekend at drive-ins and select cinemas, while Vinnie Jones and Malcolm McDowell’s action film “The Big Ugly” comes in fifth on the new box office list with a debut weekend of $150,000 (£118,000).

  • George Clooney Picks Up 'The Tender Bar' After Dropping 'Boys in the Boat'

    WENN

The ongoing coronavirus pandemic has forced the ‘Ocean’s Eleven’ actor to carefully pick his next project, choosing to direct ‘The Tender Project’ after abandoning ‘Boys in the Boat’
    Jul 26, 2020
AceShowbiz – George Clooney will visit “The Tender Bar” for his next directorial effort as COVID-19 complicates his other projects.
The star picked up the drama for the Amazon streaming platform shortly after wrapping production on Netflix sci-fi film “The Midnight Sky” in February (20), tabling another movie for MGM in favour of directing “The Tender Bar”.
But Deadline reports Clooney dropped “Boys in the Boat”, an adaptation of a book by Daniel James Brown about the 1936 University of Washington rowing team which won gold at the 1936 Olympics, because the complexity of shooting such a film during the pandemic became over-complicated due to health and safety guidelines.
George will also be producing “The Tender Bar” with his longtime business partner Grant Heslov under their Smokehouse banner.
“Hidden Figures” director Ted Melfi was originally booked to oversee the project for Sony, but when he became unavailable, Amazon bosses picked it up and offered the film to Clooney.
Based on the book by J.R. Moehringer, “The Tender Bar” centres upon a boy who searches for father figures at a local pub. William Monahan will write the script.
Meanwhile, Clooney’s upcoming apocalyptic movie “The Midnight Sky”, starring Felicity Jones and David Oyelowo, is currently in post-production and is expected to be released later this year.

  • Julie Bowen's Kids Keep Mistaking Her for Someone Else in Movies

    Instagram

The ‘Modern Family’ actress reveals she is mistaken for Sigourney Weaver by her twin sons after she and the kids watched 1999 sci-fi comedy ‘Galaxy Quest’ together.
    Jul 26, 2020
AceShowbiz – “Modern Family” star Julie Bowen’s kids are convinced mum had a big role in the film “Galaxy Quest”, and refuse to believe the role was really played by Sigourney Weaver.
The actress sat down to watch the 1999 sci-fi comedy with her twin boys ahead of appearing on cast member and pal Justin Long’s podcast, and had to keep explaining her secret identity is not Sigourney Weaver.
“They were blown away by it but when Sigourney Weaver came on, one of them looks at me and goes, ‘Mum, why didn’t you tell us you were in this movie?’ ” Julie explains. “She’s (Sigourney) got a wig and she’s got a square jaw, and I was like, ‘That is not me.’ And they were like, ‘Yeah, it’s not, sure mom…'”
It’s not the first time Julie and her kids have had identity troubles, though. At home there’s a giant poster from a film, in which she did appear – 1996 Adam Sandler comedy “Happy Gilmore” – but this time her sons refuse to believe it’s really her.
“In Ghana there are these movie clubs… and to advertise what they would be playing at the movie club that might, which was literally a TV in the back of some store, they would paint (posters) on these huge flour sacks (of) the most violent graphic scenes from the movie. And if there weren’t any, they would make them.”
“So I have a poster of Happy Gilmore…, where people are being killed and stabbed and there’s blood, there’s a monster and zombie – it’s fantastic. I think it’s a romantic golf comedy, a rom-com with golf. My fake (Modern Family) son Nolan Gould found it for me and gave it to me for my birthday.”
But Julie looks so unlike herself in the odd depiction of her character, Virginia, her kids think it’s someone else.
“On the movie poster I am portrayed roughly (and) they’re like, ‘That’s not you!’ I have, like, a Beyonce body, I have this itty bitty waist, and this giant a**… And they don’t really think that’s me. It’s pretty good!”

  • 'Fantastic Beasts' Stars Strictly Banned From Taking Movie Props Home as Keepsakes

    Warner Bros. Pictures

Dan Fogler jokingly believes Daniel Radcliffe must have made it his habit to swipe props from ‘Harry Potter’ movie set, prompting producers to place strict security measures for the spin-off.
    Jul 25, 2020
AceShowbiz – “Fantastic Beasts” star Dan Fogler is building up a collection of his movie characters’ socks, because those were the only things he was allowed to keep as a souvenir after wrapping the first “Harry Potter” spin-off.
The actor reveals there were security cameras all over the set of 2016 film “Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them” to prevent cast and crew swiping props and costumes as keepsakes, and he was only allowed to take home his character Jacob Kowalski’s mismatched socks.
“I waited until the very end and went to Colleen Atwood, who is the costume master, and said, ‘Is there anything from the costume I could take, like a piece of cloth?'” he tells WENN. “She let me keep my socks, so I have my socks from the first movie and I have my socks from the second movie.”
“I’m making it a tradition, where I get my socks at the end (of a film). I only bring them out for special occasions, like premieres. The first movie I had mismatching socks so that’s a hard one to wear out.”
Fogler is convinced the on-set security measures were put in place after the stars of the “Harry Potter” films pilfered props and costumes as the series wound down.
“The producers (of Fantastic Beasts) made a big deal about, ‘Don’t take any props, don’t take anything,’ ” he smiles. “I guess on Harry Potter, all the kids abused that rule. I think that Daniel Radcliffe has 27 different pairs of his glasses. He just was like, ‘I don’t know where I lost them… again’, and kept on stealing his glasses.”
“So when it got to us, there were cameras everywhere: ‘Don’t take a d**n thing…!’ Fantastic Beasts has trained me not to take anything unless it’s given to me.”
