  • Nia Long Believes She Was Rejected for 'Charlie's Angels' for Being 'a Little Too Black'

    WENN

The ‘Fresh Prince of Bel-Air’ actress believes being told she ‘looked too old’ for the role in the 2000 movie is just ‘a nice way to say you’re a little too Black.’
    Jul 17, 2020
AceShowbiz – Nia Long has echoed Thandie Newton’s claims about her audition for 2000’s “Charlie’s Angels”, insisting she too was discriminated against.
The 49-year-old actress told Insider she auditioned for the same role of Alex Munday for the movie, which ultimately starred Lucy Liu in the role, opposite Cameron Diaz and Drew Barrymore.
According to Nia, her agent notified her that she wouldn’t be getting the part because she “looked too old” to star alongside Drew – despite them only being four years apart.
“I was like, ‘What?’ ” she said. “I love Drew Barrymore, I think she’s amazing, but I think that was just a nice way to say you’re a little too Black. Personally, that’s what I think. Because if you notice there were no brown skin (actors). I mean, honestly, I would have been the blackest thing in the film.”
Nia explained that, “the feedback that I received from my agent was, ‘She just looked too old and sophisticated to be next to Drew Barrymore,’ and I’m thinking to myself, it’s an actor’s choice to walk in the room how they want to look, but it’s a director’s vision to help create and curate a character.”
“So if you couldn’t see beyond the fact that I had on a blazer and a pair of jeans then that was clearly not the job and opportunity for me. So, no problem, I’ll keep it moving.”
Earlier this month (Jul20), Thandie revealed she turned down the role due to her negative experience with director Joseph McGinty Nichol, known professionally as McG, during the audition process – which led to her believing she would be objectified.

  • Dave Franco and Alison Brie Make Use of Coronavirus Lockdown to Write Rom-Com

    WENN

When speaking about his collaboration with his actress wife, the ‘Now You See Me’ star also talks about how invaluable it was for him to have her starring in his directorial debut film.
    Jul 16, 2020
AceShowbiz – Dave Franco and his actress wife Alison Brie has spent the coronavirus lockdown writing a romantic comedy.
The “Now You See Me” star, who recently made his directorial debut by overseeing his wife’s movie “The Rental”, explains he and Brie were bored one day and decided to see if they could recreate a classic, like “When Harry Met Sally” or “Pretty Woman”.
“It’s a genre that we both love, but when we looked at the landscape of rom-coms over the past decade, it feels like the bar is set really low,” Dave tells Variety. “There’s a trend where rom-coms have an overly bright aesthetic and the concepts are really silly and the acting isn’t grounded.”
“We looked back on classics like ‘When Harry Met Sally’, ‘Sleepless in Seattle’, ‘Pretty Woman’… When you look at those films, you remember how grounded they are and how great the acting is.”
And if their romantic comedy takes shape, Dave would love to direct Alison again.
“She’s a unique actor in the way that she’s able to balance heavy drama with moments of levity, and it was just so comforting for me to have her there through the process (while I was making ‘The Rental’),” he adds.
“As a first-time director, there were moments where I would get in my head and start to doubt myself. It was invaluable to have her there to build me up when I needed to be, and to remind me that we were doing good work.”
The couple debuted their new film during a drive-in screening last month (June).

  • Vivica A. Fox Teases 'Empire' Movie for Finale, Would Love to Have Jussie Smollett Back

    FOX

The Candace Mason depicter hints at an ‘off the chain’ script for the upcoming feature-length finale of the FOX hit drama series and would love to welcome back an alum.
    Jul 16, 2020
AceShowbiz – Vivica A. Fox hinted “Empire” fans can expect a feature-length finale once the coronavirus crisis is over.
The 18th episode of the sixth season of the show served as its finale back in April (20) after the pandemic cut the show short when production was halted.
However, according to Fox, show bosses are planning one final instalment to round out the hip-hop drama, with the star telling U.S. TV show “Extra”, “That last script is going to be off the chain.”
“I’m hoping once coronavirus is over, we can get a two-hour finale movie of Empire for the fans,” she revealed, confirming the idea had been discussed.
“Absolutely… Lee Daniels, who is the creator of the show, mentioned it and said the fans would welcome that with open arms,” she smiled.
The star also reiterated comments that she’d welcome back actor Jussie Smollett, who was axed from the show after he was accused of faking a police report about a racist attack outside his Chicago, Illinois apartment last year.
“Oh, listen, we love Jussie. Jussie will always be family,” Fox insisted. “The fans miss Jussie. I would welcome him back if we did the finale, absolutely.”
