Lena Dunham Draws Inspiration for 'Catherine, Called Birdy' From Drew Barrymore's 'Ever After'

    Instagram/Twentieth Century Fox

When appearing on ‘The Drew Barrymore Show’, the ‘Girls’ creator and star talks about her passion project which happened to be a movie adaptation of Karen Cushman’s funny 1994 book.

    Apr 13, 2021

    AceShowbiz –
Lena Dunham has turned to Drew Barrymore and her 1998 fairytale “Ever After” for inspiration as she works on her new movie “Catherine, Called Birdy”.

The “Girls” creator and star has been eager to adapt Karen Cushman’s funny 1994 book for close to a decade and she is currently in London to start filming on the passion project.

The story follows a teenage girl’s adventures in Medieval England as she dodges her father’s attempts at setting her up in arranged marriages and Dunham reveals she has been revisiting Barrymore’s old work to help her prepare for her own venture.

During a virtual appearance on America’s “The Drew Barrymore Show”, Dunham told the actress-turned-talk show host, “I’m in England right now because I’m about to start shooting a film that I’ve been trying to make for almost 10 years.”

“It’s called ‘Catherine, Called Birdy’, and it’s a medieval coming-of-age comedy, which…has some ‘Ever After’ inspiration happening in it,” she elaborated, “So it’s kind of kismet that I’m getting to look at your face right now, because I’ve been looking at your face on some vision boards for my medieval coming-of-age comedy.”

Dunham is directing “Catherine, Called Birdy”, which will star Bella Ramsey as the titular character, alongside Andrew Scott, Joe Alwyn, Dean-Charles Chapman, and Billie Piper.

Aside from talking about her upcoming movie, Dunham talked about sobriety with Drew. “I love to think it was this very Zen choice, like, ‘You know what? I think I’m just gonna have a dry January,’ and then it turned into a dry every day, but no, it was like, ‘Girl, you’ve got to get it together!’ But it turned out to be the greatest thing I ever did…,” she confessed.

Joining Melina Matsoukas will be ‘Selma’ cinematographer Bradford Young, production designers Nathan Crowley and Shane Valentino, and The Black List founder Franklin Leonard.

    Apr 13, 2021

    AceShowbiz –
“Queen & Slim” director Melina Matsoukas has been commissioned to create a film to accompany the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s new two-part exhibition, which will be highlighted with a pair of Met Gala celebrations.

The annual celebrity-packed high-fashion affair was canceled last year (2020) due to the COVID-19 pandemic, but officials at the Met have revealed the ball will be back with a “more intimate” version on September 13, while a second, larger party will be held in its usual spring slot on the first Monday in May 2022.

The galas will help to launch “In America: A Lexicon of Fashion”, which will mark the 75th anniversary of the museum’s Costume Institute organization and “explore a modern vocabulary of American fashion.”

The second part, “In America: An Anthology of Fashion”, will open in May 2022, and feature special collaborations with a variety of filmmakers, who will be “presenting narratives that relate to the complex and layered histories of those spaces.”

Joining Matsoukas will be “Selma” cinematographer Bradford Young, production designers Nathan Crowley and Shane Valentino, and The Black List founder Franklin Leonard in contributing to the changing material in the exhibition, curated by Andrew Bolton.

In a statement, Met Director Max Hollein says, “Fashion is both a harbinger of cultural shifts and a record of the forces, beliefs, and events that shape our lives.”

“This two-part exhibition will consider how fashion reflects evolving notions of identity in America and will explore a multitude of perspectives through presentations that speak to some of the complexities of history with powerful immediacy.”

Both art exhibits will close in September 2022.

    IFC Films

‘The Falcon and the Winter Soldier’ actor posts an NSFW photo of him going pantless while holding his coat open and facing away from the camera in the middle of the street.

    Apr 13, 2021

    AceShowbiz –
Sebastian Stan is getting cheeky to promote his new movie “Monday”. Trying to draw people’s attention to his upcoming film, the actor took to Instagram on Monday, April 12 to post a picture of his bare butt.

In the NSFW image, the Bucky Barnes a.k.a. Winter Soldier of Marvel Cinematic Universe wore nothing but a coat and sneakers while posing in the middle of an empty street. He faced away from the camera while holding his coat open underneath the streetlight.

“MONDAY, the movie. Out this Friday, April 16,” the 38-year-old wrote in the caption. “When I say we gave it our ‘all’, we literally did,” he claimed, before directing his fans and followers to a link in his bio to find out how to watch the movie. He added the hashtags #yesthisisashamelesspromotionphoto, #whywait and #herestoagreatweek.

Stan is indeed successful with his attempt to generate attention with his NSFW photo as many have left comments underneath his post. One was from fellow actor Scott McGlynn who quipped, “You can definitely crack a peanut here.”

“Grey Gardens” director Michael Sucsy commented, “Well THAT got everyone’s attention.” A grateful fan wrote, “Thank you for your service.” Another follower delivered a pun, “What a beautiful night. The full moon is out.”

“Monday” is an American-British-Greek romantic drama that centers on Mickey (Stan) and Chloe (Denise Gough), two Americans in their mid-thirties living in Athens, who meet in the heat of summer one whirlwind weekend. When Chloe’s time in Greece is drawing to a close, she decides to give up her high-flying job back home and explore whether one weekend’s passion can stand the reality of the inevitable Monday.

Directed by Argyris Papadimitropoulos from a screenplay by Papadimitropoulos and Rob Hayes, the film has received generally favorable reviews from critics. It had its world premiere in September 2020 at the Toronto International Film Festival and is due to open in U.S. theaters on April 16.

Will Smith and Antoine Fuqua Pull 'Emancipation' Filming From Georgia to Protest Voting Restrictions

    WENN/Derrick Salters

In a statement announcing their decision to move production of the slavery drama to another state, Smith and Fuqua slam the government ‘that enacts regressive voting laws that are designed to restrict voter access.’

    Apr 13, 2021

    AceShowbiz –
Will Smith and Antoine Fuqua are making an actual move to show their stance on the restrictive voting laws of Georgia. They are withdrawing the production of their upcoming movie “Emancipation” from the state due to the new law.

Smith and Fuqua, who are both producing the slavery drama, announced the decision on Monday, April 12. “At this moment in time, the Nation is coming to terms with its history and is attempting to eliminate vestiges of institutional racism to achieve true racial justice,” they said in a joint statement. Slamming the government for imposing the new law, they stated, “We cannot in good conscience provide economic support to a government that enacts regressive voting laws that are designed to restrict voter access.”

Smith and Fuqua went on stressing, “The new Georgia voting laws are reminiscent of voting impediments that were passed at the end of Reconstruction to prevent many Americans from voting. Regrettably, we feel compelled to move our film production work from Georgia to another state.”

      See also…

The movie was initially scheduled to begin filming in Georgia on June 21. It’s currently unknown where the film’s production will move and if it will cause a delay on the start date. The drama becomes the first major production to leave the state because of the new law.

In addition to producing via his media company Westbrook Inc, Smith is starring in “Emancipation” as Peter, a fugitive from slavery who is fleeing Louisiana in the hopes of traveling north to freedom. Fuqua, meanwhile, is also directing from a script by William N. Collage. The project has been sold to Apple Studios in a deal reportedly valued at $120 million.

The new rules that were passed by the state legislature shorten the duration of absentee voting, require absentee voters to produce identification, limit the use of drop boxes and make it a crime to hand out free food or water to voters standing in line. Critics have maintained that the regulations amount to voter suppression, aimed at reducing the turnout of people of color.

In the wake of the new voting restrictions, filmmakers like James Mangold and actors such as Mark Hamill have vowed to boycott film and television production in Georgia. Meanwhile, Georgia-based corporations such as Delta and Coca-Cola have condemned the law and Major League Baseball opted to move the All-Star Game out of Atlanta.

Carrie-Anne Moss Recalls Being Offered Grandmother Role Just Days After Turning 40

    WENN/Brian To

‘The Matrix’ star makes the confession when discussing the topic of ageing in Hollywood with friend and filmmaker Justine Bateman at a conversation for New York’s 92nd Street Y venue.

    Apr 13, 2021

    AceShowbiz –
“The Matrix” star Carrie-Anne Moss was left flabbergasted when she was invited to portray a grandmother onscreen just days after turning 40.

The actress, now 53, couldn’t believe the audacity of casting directors who had thought she would be a better fit as the grandma instead of the role as a mum.

“I had heard that at 40, everything changed,” Moss shared as she discussed ageing in Hollywood with her friend and filmmaker Justine Bateman at a conversation for New York’s 92nd Street Y venue.

“I didn’t believe in that because I don’t believe in just jumping on a thought system that I don’t really align with. But literally the day after my 40th birthday, I was reading a script that had come to me and I was talking to my manager about it.”

      See also…

“She was like, ‘Oh, no, no, no, it’s not that role [you’re reading for], it’s the grandmother.’ I may be exaggerating a bit, but it happened overnight. I went from being a girl to the mother to beyond the mother.”

Moss admits the sudden change in how she was viewed in Hollywood was tough to accept, particularly as male actors rarely have to face such scrutiny over their age or looks, but she is trying to let go of her insecurities to emulate the attitudes of her European peers.

“I would look at these French and European actresses and they just had something about them that felt so confident in their own skin,” she said. “I couldn’t wait to be that. I strive for that. It’s not easy being in this business. There’s a lot of external pressure.”

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the conversation between Moss and her old pal was held to promote the former actress-turned-author and director Bateman’s new book, “Face: One Square Foot of Skin”, which examines how society responds to women as they age.

Jodie Turner-Smith Won't Do Action Film While Pregnant After Grueling Shoot on 'Without Remorse' Set

    Amazon Studios

The mother of one talks about her experience of filming action movie while she’s pregnant with her first child, saying it’s not something she’d want to endure again.

    Apr 13, 2021

    AceShowbiz –
Actress Jodie Turner-Smith would think twice before making another action movie while pregnant after pushing herself on the set of “Without Remorse”.

The “Queen & Slim” star – who shares 11-month-old daughter Janie with husband Joshua Jackson – plays Navy SEAL Karen Greer in the Tom Clancy film adaptation and, although she did her best to look after herself during the gruelling shoot, it’s not something she’d want to endure if she has another baby.

She said, “I had to look after myself. In hindsight, would I do an action movie while pregnant again? Definitely not.”

“It’s so often taken for granted when women have children that you just push through and keep going and you can’t slow down, when in all reality you have to give yourself as much time and space as possible.”

However, Jodie doesn’t have any regrets about taking on the challenge of “Without Remorse”, “I’m glad I did it, it was an experience, but my body needed a lot more rest and relaxation than I was giving it.”

That was partly because Jodie wasn’t able to skip many of the high-octane sequences.

      See also…

She told Total Film, “I didn’t get the chance to sit out many action scenes! Stefano (Sollima, director) likes to capture as much as he can with the actors. So when it came to explosions and stuff like that, we were really in there.”

“There’s an intense scene with the plane. When we filmed that, there were certain things with hydraulics and shaking that I wouldn’t do because of my baby, but when it came to being blown up and being in a gun fight, I did it. I had a knife fight as well.”

And Jodie found it particularly “tough” because there were so few women on set.

“There was one other woman in the cast. And I did it when I was pregnant! It was tough,” she admitted. “Everyone was obviously supportive, but men don’t have the same priorities that women do, and don’t understand what a woman’s body is going through.”

“So you try to bridge the gap with as much communication as possible.”

“Without Remorse” also stars Michael B. Jordan and Jamie Bell. It’s set for release on streaming service Amazon on 30 April (21).

Michael B. Jordan: There's Always Respect and Love for Stallone Despite His Absence From 'Creed 3'

    Warner Bros. Pictures

The Adonis Creed depicter explains why the original ‘Rocky’ actor won’t be returning for the upcoming third spin-off which will become his directorial debut.

    Apr 13, 2021

    AceShowbiz –
Sylvester Stallone won’t be in “Creed III” because the franchise wants to build the story around Adonis Creed going forward.

Michael B. Jordan will reprise his role as the titular character and make his directorial debut in the forthcoming film and, while he admitted there will be an “essence” of Stallone and his character Rocky Balboa in the motion picture, the third movie in the series will focus on Adonis.

“I think that Sly let it be known that he wasn’t coming back for this one but I think, you know, his essence and his spirit … there’s always going to be a little bit of Rocky within Adonis,” he told IGN.

“But this is a Creed franchise, and we really want to build this story and this world around him moving forward.”

While Stallone will not feature in the third film in the franchise, Jordan insisted the movie will be “something special.”

      See also…

“So, it’s always respect and always a s**t-ton of love for what he’s built, but we really want to push and navigate Adonis forward and the family that he created,” he explained.

“So, hopefully you guys will love what I’m thinking … what we’re cooking up. I think it’s going to be something special.”

Last week (end11Apr21), Stallone confirmed he wouldn’t be appearing in “Creed III”, writing in an Instagram comment, “It’ll be done but I won’t be in it.”

The 74-year-old star first appeared as the underdog fighter in 1976’s “Rocky” and starred as the character in several movies.

He reprised the role for the “Creed” franchise, as Rocky became a mentor to Adonis ‘Donnie’ Creed, and his performance in the first “Creed” film led to an Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actor.
