  • Will Smith's Slavery Movie Bought by Apple for $120M in Bidding War

    WENN

The runaway slave movie ‘Emancipation’ marks the largest film festival acquisition in history after being bought by Apple bosses for more than $120 million.
    Jul 2, 2020
AceShowbiz – Apple Studios bosses have won the bidding war for Will Smith and Antoine Fuqua’s new runaway slave film “Emancipation”.
The $120 million (£96 million)-plus deal, brokered during the Cannes Virtual Market, marks the largest film festival acquisition in history and lands Apple chiefs the world rights over rivals at Warner Bros.
The deal closed on Tuesday night (30Jun20), according to Deadline, and the film will now premiere in theatres and on Apple TV+.
It will be produced by Apple Studios, alongside Smith, Fuqua and their associates at Westbrook Studios and Fuqua Films.
The film is inspired by an 1863 photo, titled “The Scourged Back”, which features the bare back of a slave, scarred by deep whip marks delivered by a plantation boss.
Fuqua says, “The photograph was the first viral image of the brutality of slavery that the world saw, which is interesting, when you put it into perspective with today and social media and what the world is seeing, again. You can’t fix the past, but you can remind people of the past and I think we have to, in an accurate, real way.”
Production is scheduled to begin in early 2021.

AceShowbiz – “Justice League” star Ray Fisher has slammed the superhero blockbuster’s fill-in director, Joss Whedon, accusing the filmmaker of “abusive” and “unprofessional” conduct on set.
A day after the actor publicly retracted a statement he made about Whedon at Comic-Con 2017, in which he called the director “a great guy,” Ray, who played Cyborg in the film, has lashed out, revealing the moviemaker did not endear himself to cast and crew after taking over the project from Zack Snyder, who was forced to step down due to a family tragedy.
“Joss Whedon’s on-set treatment of the cast and crew of Justice League was gross, abusive, unprofessional and completely unacceptable,” Fisher tweeted on Wednesday (01Jul20).

Christians have denounced the upcoming feature film and called it ‘blasphemous,’ urging people to sign online petition in order to put pressure to have the project blocked.
    Jul 2, 2020
AceShowbiz – Paris Jackson’s role as a female Jesus in a new movie has been denounced by more than 265,000 Christians who have signed a petition calling the film “blasphemous.”
Michael Jackson’s daughter’s role in Janell Shirtcliff’s film “Habit”, which stars Bella Thorne as a “street smart party girl with a Jesus fetish,” was announced in April (20).
Now, angry Christians are claiming Paris, a singer and actress who identifies as gay and is dating her bandmate Gabriel Glenn, will play a “lesbian Jesus” with more than 265,000 petitioning the movie studios Lionsgate and Warner Bros. not to pick up the indie production.
“A new blasphemous Hollywood film is predicted to come out soon depicting Jesus as a lesbian woman,” the Change.org petition reads. “The film ‘Habit’ stars Paris Jackson who plays the role of ‘lesbian Jesus.’ ”
“Distributors haven’t picked it up as of yet, so let’s please spread awareness and wake people up to the Christianophobic garbage that is spread nowadays, but is somehow accepted and praised by society.”
Although the petitioners claim Jesus will be depicted as a lesbian, this has not been specified by producers. The movie, which also stars Gavin Rossdale, previously sparked protests from an organisation called One Million Moms, who called it “sacrilegious” and started a petition which has attracted more than 69,000 signatures.

    Jul 1, 2020
AceShowbiz – The Rolling Stones’ concert movie “The Rolling Stones: Havana Moon” is heading back to the big screen as a drive-in delight.
The band’s 2016 set, filmed in Havana, Cuba, hit cinemas for one night only before its on-demand release on cable network Starz in the U.S., and now director Paul Dugdale’s film is available to fans again – from the comfort and safety of their cars.
The concert film, which documents the Stones’ March 2016 show at the Ciudad Deportiva de la Habana sports complex, will be screening across the U.S. and Canada beginning on 10 July.
“I’m so thrilled that ‘Havana Moon’ has found its way back onto the big screen, particularly during such a strange time for live music,” Dugdale said. “The Rolling Stones concert was the first of its kind in Havana, and I hope the unprecedented absence of live music during the COVID-19 crisis means this film brings almost as much elation and joy to those watching it now… as it did the people of Havana back on that special night. Turn it up loud!”

  • Christopher Nolan Denies Bizarre Claim He Bans Chairs From Set

    WENN

Social media has been abuzz with memes after Anne Hathaway said in an interview with Variety that the ‘Dark Knight Rises’ director doesn’t allow chairs on sets of his movies.
    Jul 1, 2020
AceShowbiz – Christopher Nolan’s team has set the record straight after people were buzzing on the internet following reports that the filmmaker bans chairs from set. Denying the absurd claims, a spokesperson for the director says that the statements about Nolan’s chair ban were not accurate.
“For the record, the only things banned from [Nolan’s] sets are cell phones (not always successfully) and smoking (very successfully),” Nolan’s spokesperson Kelly Bush Novak of ID said in a statement to IndieWire. As for Anne Hathaway’s claims that the “Tenet” helmer doesn’t allow chairs on the set, the spokesperson says, “The chairs Anne was referring to are the directors chairs clustered around the video monitor, allocated on the basis of hierarchy not physical need.”
Novak goes on explaining that Nolan opts out of using his chair, but doesn’t impose the same preference on others working with him. “Chris chooses not to use his but has never banned chairs from the set. Cast and crew can sit wherever and whenever they need and frequently do,” so the spokesperson claims.
Hathaway previously praised Nolan’s decision to ban chairs from set to prevent unproductive work ethic. “Chris also doesn’t allow chairs … and his reasoning is, if you have chairs, people will sit, and if they’re sitting, they’re not working,” she said in an “Actors on Actors” video interview with Hugh Jackman published on Monday, June 29.
The actress, who has worked with the filmmaker on “The Dark Knight Rises” and “Interstellar”, went on singing praise for Nolan, “He has these incredible movies in terms of scope and ambition and technical prowess and emotion. It always arrives at the end under schedule and under budget. I think he’s onto something with the chair thing.”
The interview prompted backlash from film critics and journalists over the alleged “no chairs on set” rule. However, many have come to Nolan’s defense, with “Mandy” co-writer Aaron Stewart-Ahn writing on Twitter that “we had plenty of chairs and tables in our staging area” on “The Dark Knight Rises”.
Journalists Jeff Jensen and Gregory Ellwood also took to social media to say there were plenty of chairs when they visited the set of the Batman movie. Jensen additionally said that he visited the “Interstellar” set and there were chairs.

Matthew A. Cherry, who won an Oscar for ‘Hair Love’, suggests a follow-up to the 1992 film should pick up from the point where a black woman impressed Geena Davis’ character with her throw.
    Jun 30, 2020
AceShowbiz – Gabrielle Union is calling for a sequel to “A League of Their Own”, chronicling the rise of the three female black stars of post-war baseball.
Sportsman-turned-filmmaker Matthew A. Cherry, who picked up an Oscar earlier this year for his short “Hair Love”, has suggested the sequel should pick up at the point in the 1992 film when a black woman in the crowd at a game throws the ball, impressing Geena Davis’ character, who was playing in the first female professional baseball league.
In a 2018 tweet Union has shared, Cherry wrote: “Imagine A League Of Their Own sequel that starts with the scene of the black woman throwing the ball back from the stands and you stay with her and it becomes a biopic on (Toni Stone, Mamie Johnson & Connie Morgan).”
“Can we make this please?” the actress tweeted. “Asking for a bunch of us.”

Gabrielle Union loves an idea of black female-centered ‘A League of Their Own’ sequel.
Stone, Johnson, and Morgan played professional baseball in the 1940s and 1950s.
