Keanu Reeves Unintentionally Changed the Original 'John Wick' Title

    Summit Entertainment

Screenwriter Derek Kolstad reveals that the ‘The Matrix’ star failed to refer to the film properly in interviews, prompting filmmakers to make altercation to the film’s title.
    May 29, 2020
AceShowbiz – Keanu Reeves’ struggle to nail the title of the first “John Wick” movie prompted filmmakers to change the title.
The 2014 blockbuster revenge tale, which centers on Reeves’ titular action hero, was initially called “Scorn” but “The Matrix” star failed to refer to the film properly in interviews.
“The only reason it’s called ‘John Wick’ is that Keanu kept referring to it as ‘John Wick’,” screenwriter Derek Kolstad told ComicBook.com. “Marketing was like, ‘Dude, that’s four to five million dollars in free advertising so far, so it’s ‘John Wick’ instead of ‘Scorn’.’ I can’t imagine it being ‘Scorn’ now.”
The change seems to have worked out, with the film becoming a huge hit spawning three sequels, including “John Wick: Chapter 4”, which is set to be released next year (21).

'Sonic the Hedgehog' Sequel Being Developed With Original Director Returning

    Paramount Pictures

Paramount gives a green light to the sequel with Jeff Fowler back in the director’s chair, while Pat Casey and Josh Miller are returning to write the script.
    May 29, 2020
AceShowbiz – “Sonic the Hedgehog” is set to sprint for another lap. A sequel to the video game adaptation is in the works at Paramount, following the hugely successful performance of the first movie. Paramount Pictures and Sega Sammy confirmed the news on Thursday, May 28.
The sequel will bring back its team of filmmakers, with Jeff Fowler returning on the director’s chair, and Pat Casey and Josh Miller being tapped to write the script again. Neal H. Moritz, Toby Ascher and Toru Nakahara are producing the picture, while Hajime Satomi, Haruki Satomi and Tim Miller are on board as executive producers.
According to Variety which first reported the news, “Sonic the Hedgehog 2” is still in the development stage so decisions have not been made yet regarding casting or a production start date. In the first movie, Ben Schwartz voices the CGI-animated titular character, while James Marsden stars in live-action role as Sonic’s new best friend Tom. Jim Carrey portrays the villain in the first movie, Dr. Robotnik, with Tika Sumpter starring as a veterinarian and Tom’s wife, Maddie Wachowski.
Based on the popular video game franchise from Sega, the first film was initially met with skepticism after the original design of Sonic was heavily criticized by fans due to a more humanlike physique of the character, with new running sneakers, two separate eyes and muscled legs. In response to the criticism, Fowler announced that Sonic would be redesigned, causing a delay from its original release date of November 8 to February 14, 2020.
“Sonic the Hedgehog” was eventually released on January 25 of this year to majorly positive reviews. Commercially, it opened to $58 million at the box office, marking the biggest opening for any video game film ever. With a total of $146.1 million in the United States and Canada, it is now the highest-grossing video game movie of all time domestically, while earning $306.7 million globally.

Sarah Jones' Parents Want Randall Miller to Be Kicked Out of DGA for Violating Probation Terms

    WENN/Daniel Tanner

Richard and Elizabeth Jones learn that the ‘Midnight Rider’ director, who served a year behind bars for his part in the death of their camerawoman daughter, has helmed a movie in Serbia and Colombia.
    May 29, 2020
AceShowbiz – The parents of tragic camerawoman Sarah Jones are urging Directors Guild of America officials to kick Randall Miller out of the organization after learning he directed a movie in Serbia and Colombia last year (19).
Miller served a year behind bars for his part in the death of Jones, who was hit and killed by a train while shooting footage for his aborted Allman Brothers biopic “Midnight Rider” in Georgia in 2014.
The camerawoman’s parents, Richard and Elizabeth Jones, are convinced Miller violated the terms of his probation by shooting “Higher Ground” overseas and they want DGA bosses to act.
In a statement to Deadline, the parents write, “The legal system will decide whether Mr. Miller violated the terms of his probation when he produced and directed the feature film Higher Grounds, but in our opinion he most certainly violated the moral and ethical standards that informed his court sentencing.”
“To us, his actions were blatantly defiant and egregiously disrespectful to the entire creative community, to the six crew members who were injured while filming Midnight Rider, and to the memory of Sarah Jones, who died on Mr. Miller’s set as a direct result of the unsafe conditions that he willfully and illegally created.”
“To help ensure that the film industry consistently protects the lives and safety of all its members, it is imperative to hold those responsible for Sarah’s death fully accountable.”
They continue, “In light of Mr. Miller’s continuing insistence on pushing and arguably overstepping the boundaries of court rulings and common decency, we urge the Directors Guild to reconsider Mr. Miller’s membership. The prestigious DGA has such an esteemed list of law-abiding, safety-conscious members that it is increasingly difficult to imagine why they would allow Mr. Miller to claim equal standing among them.”
Under the terms of his probation, Miller is “prohibited from serving as director, first assistant director or supervisor with responsibility for safety in any film production,” but his lawyer, Ed Garland, tells Deadline the document contained a lot of ambiguous language, adding, “The day that sentence was entered, the language of that sentence indicated he could continue to direct.”
Garland has yet to respond to the statement from Sarah Jones’ parents.

Henry Cavill Eyeing to Make Return as Superman in New DC Film

    Warner Bros.

Last seen as Clark Kent in 2017’s ‘Justice League’, the ‘Man of Steel’ actor has previously stated that he has not given up his superhero role, insisting there is still a lot of storytelling to do.
    May 29, 2020
AceShowbiz – Henry Cavill is reportedly in talks to reprise his role as Superman in a new film based on the DC Comic books.
Sources confirmed to Variety the “Man of Steel” actor, whose most recent outing as Clark Kent came in 2017’s “Justice League”, is in talks to make an unexpected return as America’s beloved superhero.
Insiders also told Deadline.com the project will not be a “standalone film”, with Warner Bros’ chiefs having several DC movies at various stages of production – Matt Reeves’ “The Batman”, which began shooting before the Covid-19 pandemic, as well as “Shazam! 2”, Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson’s “Black Adam” and “Aquaman 2”. “Wonder Woman 1984” and a new “Suicide Squad” movie are also in post-production awaiting release.
“Man of Steel” director Zack Snyder recently announced he would release the long-rumoured “Snyder Cut of Justice League” for HBO Max, which could require reshoots, but insiders told Variety, Cavill’s talks relate to a cameo in one of DC’s upcoming films.
In an interview with Mens’ Health magazine late last year (19), Cavill said he had not given up the role, despite the apparent shelving of plans for a continuing DC Extended Universe in favour of standalone franchises.
“The cape is still in the closet,” the star of “The Witcher” said. “It’s still mine. I’m not going to sit quietly in the dark as all the stuff is going on. I’ve not given up the role.”
“There’s a lot I have to give for Superman yet. A lot of storytelling to do. A lot of real, true depths to the honesty of the character I want to get into. I want to reflect the comic books. That’s important to me. There’s a lot of justice to be done for Superman. The status is: You’ll see.”

Devon Sawa Credits Christina Ricci for 'Casper' Role: I Owe Her the World

While celebrating the film’s 25th anniversary, the actor playing the iconic ghost reveals that his four-year-old daughter was just about to watch the film for the first time.
    May 28, 2020
AceShowbiz – Actor Devon Sawa is thanking his “Casper” co-star Christina Ricci for helping him land the role, while celebrating the film’s 25th anniversary.
The star took to Twitter on Tuesday (May 26) in response to a tweet from the 1995 movie’s director Brad Silberling, in which he gave a shout-out the cast, including Ricci and Bill Pullman.
Sawa, who played ghost Casper when he comes to life as a boy in the spooky comedy, joined in on the exchange, revealing his four-year-old daughter was just about to watch the film for the first time and also noted that it was Ricci who helped him land the role.
“Christina Ricci is a HUGE talent and played a big part in me getting the role and then went on to recommend me for (1995 film) ‘Now and Then’,” he wrote. “I owe her the world.”

He also noted that while he played the human version of the supernatural character, it was Malachi Pearson who voiced the ghost throughout the film.

“I was in Casper for 30 secs (seconds). Malachi Pearson did the hard work,” he added. “When they decided last minute to bring Casper to life he was too young. So I landed the role. And I’m very fortunate @BSilberling chose me cause I’d be lying if I said it didn’t start a 30 year job that I love.”

Christopher Nolan: Blowing Up Real Plane Is Cheaper Than Using CGI for New Movie

    Instagram

The ‘Dark Knight’ filmmaker reveals he chose to destroy a real Boeing 747 in his new movie ‘Tenet’ than using special effects because it’s less expensive.
    May 28, 2020
AceShowbiz – Christopher Nolan didn’t need the help of special effects crews for scenes in his upcoming movie “Tenet” – he did most of the work himself.
In an interview with Total Film magazine, the director revealed he skipped effects and brought in a real Boeing 747 plane to blow up in a key sequence in the movie.
“I planned to do it using miniatures and set-piece builds and a combination of visual effects and all the rest,” he shared. “However, while scouting for locations in Victorville, California, the team discovered a massive array of old planes.”
Nolan went on to say that, after running the numbers, buying the plane was just more cost effective.
“(It was) actually more efficient to buy a real plane of the real size, and perform this sequence for real in camera, rather than build miniatures or go the CG route,” he added. “It’s a strange thing to talk about – a kind of impulse buying, I suppose.”
He added, “It was a very exciting thing to be a part of.”
Speaking to Cinemablend, star John David Washington added, “That was a real plane, and that was a real building that they crashed that plane into. And we, cast and crew, all witnessed it. It was epic! It was incredible, we all cheered and hurrayed and hurrahed when they yelled cut after Chris felt like he got it. What you saw is really what happened – at least the night I was there.”
“Tenet”, also starring Robert Pattinson and Elizabeth Debicki, is due for release on July 17, 2020.

Director Paul Feig Blames All-Female 'Ghostbusters' Movie Flop on 'Anti-Hillary Movement'

    Columbia Pictures

The helmer of the 2016 ‘Ghostbuster’ remake claims the movie failure had something to do with the anti-Hillary supporters following her bid for presidency.
    May 28, 2020
AceShowbiz – Paul Feig has opened up on the criticism his 2016 all-female “Ghostbusters” reboot attracted, insisting Hillary Clinton’s bid for U.S. presidency harmed the movie.
The 57-year-old director’s announcement in 2015 that he would reboot the comedy franchise with an all-female cast, led by Kristen Wiig, Melissa McCarthy, Kate McKinnon, and Leslie Jones, drew a slew of criticism from fans of the original movies.
Despite high hopes, the film ultimately underperformed at the box office, and Feig told Jess Cagle’s SiriusXM show the “anti-Hillary movement” played a big role in the movie’s negative perception.
“I think that some really brilliant author or researcher or sociologist needs to write a book about 2016 and how intertwined we were with Hillary and the anti-Hillary movement, it was just this year where, I don’t know, just everyone went to a boiling point,” he explained.
“I don’t know if it was having an African American president for eight years teed them up or something, but they were ready to explode.”
The filmmaker went on to reference a 2015 video Donald Trump shared on his Instagram page, in which he appeared baffled by the idea of remaking “Ghostbusters” with an all-female cast.
“By the time I announced in… 2015, when I announced I was going to do it, it started. There’s tape of Donald Trump being like, ‘Now the Ghostbusters are women, what’s going on?’ ” Feig continued.
“Like, it’s crazy how people got nuts about women trying to be in power or be in positions that they weren’t normally in. It was an ugly, ugly year.”
Meanwhile, a new “Ghostbusters” movie is in the works. “Ghostbusters: Afterlife”, which sees the return of original cast members Bill Murray, Ernie Hudson, Sigourney Weaver, and Annie Potts, is set to hit theatres on March 5, 2021 – after being delayed from a July 10, 2020 release date, due to the Covid-19 crisis.

Shia LaBeouf Under Fire After Winning Award for Emerging Screenwriter

    WENN

Some of the up-and-coming screenwriters have been left disgusted after the Sun Valley Film Festival gave the High Scribe award for emerging talent to the ‘Transformers’ actor.
    May 28, 2020
AceShowbiz – Shia LaBeouf has come under fire after collecting a screenwriting award intended for up-and-coming talent.
The 33-year-old actor infuriated some undiscovered writers after he won the Sun Valley Film Festival’s High Scribe award late last month, April 2020, according to The Wrap.
While the accolade is apparently intended to supporting emerging screenwriters, the win from an actor who has starred in multiple blockbusters and previously wrote the critically acclaimed “Honey Boy” angered some of his fellow competitors.
“Any ‘screenwriting competition’ that awards its top prize to an established Hollywood screenwriter doesn’t deserve your $50,” tweeted screenwriter Kyle Andrews.
“Not to take anything from the guy at all, he’s a great artist, but for a company to take money from hardworking, undiscovered screenwriters looking to break in and give their top prize to SHIA FREAKING LEBOUF is a level of ballsy I can’t begin to comprehend.”
He added, “Honestly I’m kinda livid about this. I know how these companies operate, this was a choice. They’re thirsty for recognition because they can’t get it on their own, and I hope writers can see it.”
Another screenwriter revealed he also entered the competition while joking about the insignificance of the prize to LeBeouf.
“I lost a screenwriting competition to Shia LaBeouf. I hope he puts that $1000 and 1-on-1 consultation with a producer to good use,” they wrote.
After winning the High Scribe award, the “Transformers” actor will be treated to “one-on-one meetings with some of the industry’s finest to discuss their work” as well as “mentoring from an experienced professional.”
Explaining why he entered the contest, a representative for the star said, “Shia entered the competition as an emerging writer.”
“He is thrilled to be a part of the community and thrives off of any opportunity to gain insight, constructive criticism and knowledge from those with more experience… and that’s in regards to any art form,” they added, reported Britain’s Daily Mail newspaper.
