Chris Nolan and Steve McQueen Sign Letter Asking Government for More Cinema Funding

    WENN

A number of big names ranging from directors, producers, and actors have signed a petition appealing for more funding for cinemas from the British government amid Covid-19 pandemic.

    Jan 19, 2021
AceShowbiz – Christopher Nolan and Steve McQueen are among the big names to have signed a letter to U.K. Chancellor of the Exchequer Rishi Sunak, appealing for more funding for cinemas amid the Covid-19 pandemic.
The letter – a follow-up to the U.K. Cinema Association’s Keep the Magic Alive campaign in December (20) – states that while the British government has tried to help the struggling sector, it’s not enough to keep them afloat.
“There is no doubt that if supported to survive, the sector will recover and once again thrive. But the need for direct financial support is pressing,” the letter, also signed by filmmakers Guy Ritchie, Sam Mendes, Ridley Scott, Danny Boyle, and Asif Kapadia, producers Barbara Broccoli and David Heyman, and actors Noel Clarke and Jude Law, reads. “We recognise the support that government has already been able to provide. But we fear that this will not be enough, with the challenges being most acute for those larger cinema operators who have not been able to access any tailored funding.”

“These companies represent over 80 per cent of the market, in many ways constituting its ‘critical mass’ and helping to drive the success of associated sectors such as film distribution and production coalesce. Without them, the future of the entire U.K. film industry would look extremely precarious.”
Due to Covid-19 lockdowns in the U.K., the majority of cinemas closed towards the end of 2020, and have yet to re-open. And while some of the smaller cinema operators have received funding through the British Film Institute, it’s thought that the larger companies – such as Cineworld and Odeon – haven’t been given any government support, other than generic business support such as the furlough scheme.
“U.K. cinema stands on the edge of an abyss. We urgently need targeted funding support to ensure that future generations can enjoy the magic of cinema,” the letter concludes.
In total, more than 40 figures from the U.K. film industry have signed the letter, which was printed in The Sunday Times newspaper.

Doug Liman: Filming Low-Budgeted 'Locked Down' Boosts His Confidence in Shooting Outer Space Movie

    WENN

The ‘Edge of Tomorrow’ director claims he has become ‘more confident’ about making a movie in outer space with Tom Cruise after completing his latest movie on a tight budget and schedule.

    Jan 19, 2021
AceShowbiz – Doug Liman has “more confidence” about making a movie in space since shooting “Locked Down” in deserted London.
The filmmaker is pleased that PH van Sandwijk’s idea for a low-budget, hastily-assembled pandemic heist thriller paid off and he’s now got more faith that the producer’s other “crazy” idea – which also involves Tom Cruise, Elon Musk’s SpaceX and NASA – will work out too.
He said, “It connects to Locked Down because the same producer who a year ago came to me and said how would you like to try to shoot a movie in outer space? That’s PJ van Sandwijk… and when, a year ago, he proposed something insane like the space movie, I initially humoured PJ. I was like, well, I’ll take a few meetings on shooting a movie in outer space, because I kind of am curious. You know we’re obviously not going to be able to do this, but I’m curious, why not?”
“It was similar to my humouring PJ this summer on the pandemic movie. Sure, we’ll explore that. But here’s the thing. When a producer proposes something crazy to you, like, let’s try to shoot a movie in outer space, and NASA and SpaceX sign on, and Tom Cruise signs on…you’re just a little bit more receptive when that same producer says I got another crazy idea, and that became Locked Down.”

      See also…

Admitting things came “full circle,” Liman told Deadline, “If you attempt to do something outrageous and cinematic, and you pull it off, that just gives you a little bit more confidence for the next time.”
Doug flew his own plane from the U.S. to the U.K. to shoot “Locked Down” and said he felt that would be a “good first step” towards facing his fears around the space project.
“And obviously, the next time is going to be about going to outer space,” he continued. “I also think, when I thought about the flight across the Atlantic, which really did scare me, and one of the reasons why I didn’t shy away from it, at the end of the day, is I had been to the SpaceX launch in the beginning of the summer. It scared me, imagining myself in that rocket, venturing out into unknown places.”
“I thought the flight would be a good first step towards getting the courage to strap myself in that rocket with Tom Cruise.”

Jude Law's Son Almost Gave Up His Acting Dream Due to the Shadow of His Parents' Fame

    Instagram

Rafferty Law, Jude’s son with actress Sadie Frost, is hesitant to pursue a career in the entertainment industry for fear of living under the shadow of his famous parents.

    Jan 19, 2021
AceShowbiz – Jude Law and Sadie Frost’s son Rafferty came close to turning his back on his acting dreams over the pressure to live up to his father’s career success.
The 24 year old began having second thoughts about his chosen profession as a teen because he knew he’d inevitably be compared to his Oscar-nominated dad.
“At school, I always loved being in plays from a young age, but when I was about 15 I started hesitating,” Rafferty Law shared. “I felt if the comparison and the pressure were going to be there, maybe music was more for me.”
“But then I also felt like I owed it to myself to see if I could work hard and do it, and I’m really happy that I did.”

      See also…

And Rafferty, who also enjoyed a brief stint as a model, knew he could turn to Jude for advice when he landed his first major leading role in upcoming Oliver Twist tale, “Twist”.
“Growing up we always went on adventures together. I was obsessed with The Lord of the Rings and would make him take me to Primrose Hill (in London), where we’d run around and create our own fairytale world, dressing up and making up plays,” Rafferty recalled.
“With Twist he gave me a bit of advice before filming: stay calm, stay confident, make sure you get to know everyone, go and introduce yourself, learn everyone’s names and make the set a fun environment.”
Although “The Talented Mr. Ripley” star is the more famous parent, Rafferty’s mum Sadie also started out as an actress, most notably appearing in Francis Ford Coppola’s “Bram Stoker’s Dracula” in 1992, and starring opposite her future husband Jude in Paul W. S. Anderson’s directorial debut “Shopping” in 1994. She took a step back from acting in the late 1990s to focus on raising the couple’s three children, as well as her oldest son Finlay, from her first marriage to Spandau Ballet’s Gary Kemp.

Wendi Mclendon-Covey Rules Out 'Bridesmaid' Sequel Because Kristen Wiig Says No

    Universal Pictures

One of the cast members explains that the sequel to Paul Feig’s 2011 rom-com is highly unlikely to happen because the lead star Wiig is against the idea.

    Jan 19, 2021
AceShowbiz – Wendi Mclendon-Covey has insisted a “Bridesmaids” sequel will never happen.
The comedian played the role of Rita in Paul Feig’s 2011 rom-com alongside the likes of Kristen Wiig (Annie Walker), Maya Rudolph (Lillian), and Melissa McCarthy (Megan), but she’s admitted it’s highly unlikely a follow-up will be made because lead star Kristen is against the idea.
“You know, for 10 years we’ve been saying that there will be no sequel. And that’s coming from Kristen’s mouth. So, yeah, there is no sequel,” she insisted during an interview with Us Weekly.
Despite dashing hopes of a second movie, the “Blended” star revealed where she sees Rita now and how she based her alter ego on the women on the reality show “Real Housewives”.
“I think maybe one of Rita’s kids knocked up a teacher,” she mused. “And I think she’s divorced and seeing that, you know, ‘Oh, I had it so much better when I was married. I wonder why I was so miserable all the time?’ I kind of patterned her off of any of the Real Housewives of wherever, where there is always something wrong but there’s really nothing wrong. It’s just that she’s bored and needs to get a job.”

      See also…

“Bridesmaids” saw Kristen’s character ruin her friendship with her best friend Lillian and go through a tumultuous time with her cop lover Rhodes (Chris O’Dowd) and cause chaos as her pal prepared to tie the knot, before restoring peace.
Last year (20), director Paul insisted a “Bridesmaids” sequel is down to Kristen and admitted it would take a really clever storyline to make another instalment because the character’s situation was resolved by the end of the flick.
“Everybody thinks they want a Bridesmaids sequel,” he said. “It could be fun, but I always have to say this: Bridesmaids works – you remember all the comedy stuff, that was great, but the reason that movie worked is because it was about Kristen Wiig’s character who was a very confident person before the movie began who has this total crash because her bakery goes out of business and everything falls apart in her life.”
“So we meet her and she’s a disaster. She’s desperately trying to hang onto this one thing, which is her friendship with Maya Rudolph’s character, and that takes her through the fire.”
“That’s why all this stuff happens, because she’s just acting out and trying desperately to save things, and by the end she heals herself, as much as you can. That’s what you latch onto in that film.”

Kristy Swanson Dragged by Fellow Stars for Protesting Trump's Removal From 'Home Alone 2'

    WENN/Adriana M. Barraza/Instar

Jane Lynch, Rosanna Arquette and Patton Oswalt blast the ‘Buffy the Vampire Slayer’ alum for defending the outgoing president amid fans’ petition to have his scene removed from the 1992 Christmas film.

    Jan 18, 2021
AceShowbiz – Kristy Swanson has found herself some enemies in fellow actors after voicing out her support for Donald Trump. The actress has been called out on Twitter after protesting the removal of the outgoing president’s scene from “Home Alone 2”.
“If Cancel Culture is really going to have Donald J. Trump removed from the John Hughes movie ‘Home Alone,’ then in support of MY PRESIDENT, I’d like to have myself officially removed from the John Hughes’ films, ‘Pretty In Pink’ and ‘Ferris Buhler’s Day Off,’ ” she posted on the blue bird app on Friday, January 15.
Much to her embarrassment, many didn’t seem to have problem with missing out her parts in the above-mentioned works. “I’m sorry. Who are you?” Jane Lynch responded to Swanson’s tweet. Rosanna Arquette sarcastically tweeted, “So would we.”

Meanwhile, Patton Oswalt blasted the “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” vet, “This is weak, Kristy. I was removed from AS GOOD AS IT GETS and BAD SANTA years before Trump even THOUGHT of running for President. That’s how I support MY leader. Why do you hate America?”

      See also…

Another Twitter user pointed out, “She had one speech in Ferris (‘I heard from my mother’s sister’s brother…’) Would be a pretty easy re-edit. Not sure why she’s offered up her only residual income, though. & I will not be googling her walk-on in Pretty in Pink. I’m already mad at myself for working this hard.”
Fans of “Home Alone 2” are petitioning to have Trump’s cameo cut from the movie after he incited riot at the Capitol Hill on January 6. In the 1992 cult Christmas film, the 45th POTUS is featured briefly in a scene where Macaulay Culkin’s Kevin McCallister asks Trump for directions while lost in New York.
“Digitally remove him from Home Alone 2 next,” one fan wrote on Twitter. Another tweeted, “Disney should remove Donald Trump from Home Alone 2.” Some others demanded that Trump be replaced with former president Barack Obama or Trump’s successor Joe Biden in the scene.

Culkin even seemed to support fans’ demand as he replied to a user who posted his version of the scene with Trump being edited as an invisible figure. “Bravo,” the actor wrote.

Russell Crowe Blasts 'Kids These Days' for Roasting His Oscar-Winning Film

    Twentieth Century Fox

The Australian actor defends ‘Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World’ against a Twitter troll who jokes about the 2003 period war-drama making him fall asleep.

    Jan 18, 2021
AceShowbiz – Russell Crowe has clapped back at a critic of his 2003 film “Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World”. The 56-year-old actor and his critically-acclaimed movie become the subject of mockery on Twitter after a user harshly alluded the film was boring.
The Twitter user wrote, “Lots of folk complaining about lack of sleep during the Pandemic.” He continued to joke, “May I recommend Master And Commander starring the usually captivating, attention-grabbing Russell Crowe. I’ve never made it past the ten minute mark. You’re welcome. And thanks Russell.”
After catching wind of it, Crowe responded to the mean-spirited tweet. “That’s the problem with kids these days. No focus,” he wrote while including the original tweet.
Defending the epic period war-drama, he added, “Peter Weirs film is brilliant. An exacting, detail oriented, epic tale of fidelity to Empire & service, regardless of the cost. Incredible cinematography by Russell Boyd & a majestic soundtrack.” He went on stressing, “Definitely an adults movie.”

Russell Crowe defended his film ‘Master and Commander’ against a Twitter troll’s harsh criticism.
“Master and Commander” is set in the Napoleonic Wars. The film’s plot and characters are adapted from three novels in author Patrick O’Brian’s Aubrey-Maturin series, which includes 20 completed novels of Jack Aubrey’s naval career.
The film, which was co-written, produced and directed by Peter Weir, also starred Paul Bettany and was nominated for 10 Oscars, including Best Picture and Best Director. It won Best Cinematography and Best Sound Editing, though lost in all other categories to “The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King”.
Amid the COVID-19 pandemic, Crowe was one of the few Hollywood actors who graced big screen in 2020. His action thriller “Unhinged” became the first wide theatrical release in several months after the coronavirus outbreak shut down theater-going. It received mixed reviews from critics, who praised Crowe’s performance but felt the film did not take full advantage of its premise.

The Russo Brothers Spill on Tom Holland's Role in Their Decision to Take on 'Cherry'

    WENN/Apple TV+/Sheri Determan

Speaking about the adaptation of the Nico Walker novel, Joe and Anthony Russo confess that the dark elements of the source material led them to coming close in turning down the chance to direct it.

    Jan 18, 2021
AceShowbiz – Filmmaking brothers Joe and Anthony Russo were ready to turn down the chance to direct “Cherry (2021)” before realising “Avengers” star Tom Holland would be the crime drama’s perfect leading man.
The siblings were initially unsure about how to approach the adaptation of the Nico Walker novel of the same name, about an army medic who resorts to robbing banks after struggling with a substance abuse problem upon returning home, because the source material was so “dark”.
Speaking to Variety, Anthony said, “I don’t even know that Joe and I wanted to commit to doing the movie at all until we thought of Tom in the role. The book is dark, very complicated, and that’s what its value is.”
“We wanted to make this movie because it speaks to very relevant and current issues dealing with opioid addiction that has to do with the military experience, the modern military experience. It was a very original take on those experiences, specific to the modern generation.”

      See also…

“We wanted to do a version of the movie that was palatable, not like taking your medicine.”
It was only when the Russo Brothers began considering how Tom’s involvement would transform the movie that they started to understand how they would tackle the adaptation.
“Tom is so likeable. He’s such an appealing actor, and so good,” Anthony gushed. “Once we started thinking about him as a character, the whole movie opened up for us as a possibility because he was our road to an accessible, exciting, enjoyable version of a difficult film.”
“Cherry” will open in theatres in late February (21), before premiering on Apple TV+ in March.
