    Clyde Taylor, Literary Scholar Who Elevated Black Cinema, Dies at 92

    A leading figure in the field of Black studies in the 1970s, he identified work by Black filmmakers as worthy of serious intellectual attention.Clyde Taylor, a scholar who in the 1970s and ’80s played a leading role in identifying, defining and elevating Black cinema as an art form, died on Jan. 24 at his home in Los Angeles. He was 92.His daughter, Rahdi Taylor, a filmmaker, said the cause was chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.As a young professor in the Los Angeles area in the late 1960s — first at California State University, Long Beach, and then at the University of California, Los Angeles — Dr. Taylor was at the epicenter of a push to bring the study of Black culture into academia.Black culture was not merely an appendage to white culture, he argued, but had its own logic, history and dynamics that grew out of the Black Power and Pan-African movements. And filmmaking, he said, was just as important to Black culture as literature and art.Dr. Taylor in 1958 when he was a student at Howard University, where he earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees in English.via Taylor familyHe was especially taken by the work of a circle of young Black filmmakers in the 1970s that he would later call the “L.A. Rebellion.” Among them were the directors Charles Burnett, Julie Dash, Haile Gerima and Billy Woodberry, all of whom went on to have immense impact on Black directors like Spike Lee and Ava DuVernay.As Dr. Taylor documented, these directors created their own, stripped-down approach to narrative and form.     Keith McNally, of Balthazar, Discusses His Filmmaking Past

    Hundreds of moviegoers went to rare screenings of the New York restaurateur’s little-known 1990 film. Afterward, he treated them to half-price dinners at Balthazar and Minetta Tavern.On Thursday night at the Roxy Cinema in Lower Manhattan, a throng of scarf-bundled cinephiles attended the sold-out screening of a black-and-white psychological thriller, “End of the Night,” that was being shown for the first time in more than 30 years.The film’s obscurity wasn’t what drew the crowd: They were there because of its unlikely writer and director, Keith McNally, the downtown restaurateur who runs Balthazar, Minetta Tavern, Pastis and Morandi.Before he shaped New York’s nightlife with his brasseries, Mr. McNally had serious filmmaking ambitions.     What’s on TV This Week: ‘Abbott Elementary’ and Super Bowl LVIII

    The third season of the award winning sitcom airs on ABC. The Kansas City Chiefs and the San Francisco 49ers go head-to-head.Between network, cable and streaming, the modern television landscape is a vast one. Here are some of the shows, specials and movies coming to TV this week, Feb. 5-11. Details and times are subject to change.MondayTHE EXORCIST 5:55 p.m. on Flix. There are two things I’m always in the mood to watch: reality television and horror movies (both involve a bit of schadenfreude). “The Exorcist,” of course, is genre royalty, and since it turned 50 last year, it’s a good time to watch Regan’s head go around and lament the ever-worsening quality in practical effects. You can also play my favorite TV game: trying to catch which parts have been edited out for broadcast.BELOW DECK 9 p.m. on Bravo. Our beloved “stud of the sea” Captain Lee Rosbach has finally sailed off into the sunset after 10 seasons of managing unruly young yachties (don’t worry, he’s fine: he’s gabbing about all things “Below Deck” on his podcast, “Salty”). Captain Kerry Titheradge, of “Below Deck Adventure” fame, is now manning the helm. Fraser Olender returns as the chief stew, and with the rumors that he’s now dating a charter guest confirmed, there’s sure to be plenty to rock the boat this season.TuesdayMatthew Broderick in “Ferris Bueller’s Day Off.”Paramount PicturesFERRIS BUELLER’S DAY OFF 5:30 p.m. on Freeform. References to “Ferris Bueller’s Day Off” abound in the latest season of “True Detective.” The “Twist and Shout” parade sequence plays in the Tsalal station leading up to the mysterious death of the researchers — and it’s on a loop when Chief Liz Danvers (Jodie Foster) inspects the scene. Later, a murderer eerily whistles the Beatles tune as both taunt and callback. Perhaps a rewatch of the John Hughes classic, with Matthew Broderick starring as the charming truant, will unlock the deepening mystery?WednesdayABBOTT ELEMENTARY 9 p.m. on ABC. Coming off another semi-successful awards season (Quinta Brunson won an acting Emmy for her role in the show), “Abbott Elementary” returns for its third season. Once again, optimism and hilarity will be set against the backdrop of the grimly underfunded Philadelphia public school system.     How Toilets Got a Starring Role in a Wim Wenders Movie

    A behind-the-scenes look at “Perfect Days,” which features Koji Yakusho as a cleaner of public bathrooms in Tokyo.As artistic inspiration goes, public toilets don’t usually stir the spirit.Then again, most toilets aren’t like the public bathrooms in Tokyo.So when Wim Wenders, the German film director of art-house favorites like “Paris, Texas” and “Wings of Desire,” first toured more than a dozen public toilet buildings around the Japanese capital city in the spring of 2022, he was enchanted by what he described as “little jewels” designed by Pritzker Prize winners including Tadao Ando, Shigeru Ban and Kengo Kuma. Those stylish commodes provided the creative sparks for his latest movie, “Perfect Days,” which has been nominated in the international feature category for an Academy Award and opens in theaters in the United States on Feb. 7.The movie — a poignant character study of a public-toilet cleaner with a mysterious past who lives a spartan existence and works with the care of a master craftsman — actually had its roots in a bit of propaganda. Wenders had been invited to Japan as the guest of a prominent Japanese businessman who hoped that the director might want to make a series of short films featuring the toilets, which had been conceived as showcases for Japanese artistry and hygienic mastery.Koji Yanai, the son of the founder of Fast Retailing (the sprawling clothing giant best known for its Uniqlo brand) and a senior executive officer there, had spearheaded the public toilet project to be an architectural display of “Japanese pride.”“If I say Japanese toilets are world number one, no one will disagree,” Yanai said in an interview late last year.     Don Murray, a Star in Films That Took on Social Issues, Dies at 94

    An Oscar-nominated role opposite Marilyn Monroe in “Bus Stop” led to a long career in film and TV and onstage, in productions that grappled with race, drugs, homosexuality and more.Don Murray, the boy-next-door actor who made his film debut as Marilyn Monroe’s infatuated cowboy in “Bus Stop” in 1956 and played a priest, a drug addict, a gay senator and myriad other roles in movies, on television and onstage over six decades, has died at 94. His son Christopher on Friday confirmed the death but provided no other details.In the postwar 1950s, when being sensitive, responsible and a “nice guy” were important attributes in a young man, Mr. Murray was a churchgoing pacifist who became a conscientious objector during the Korean War. He fulfilled his service obligation by working for two and a half years in German and Italian refugee camps for $10 a month, assisting orphans, the injured and the displaced.Back from Europe in 1954, he settled on an acting career focused on socially responsible themes.     The onetime football player played a host of roles in an acting career that lasted more than four decades.Carl Weathers, the N.F.L. linebacker turned actor known for playing Apollo Creed in the first four “Rocky” movies in an acting career that spanned more than four decades, died on Thursday. He was 76.His family said Mr. Weathers had “died peacefully in his sleep.” No cause was given.As the boxer Apollo Creed, he fought Sylvester Stallone in the “Rocky” movies, the first of which, released in 1976, won the Academy Award for best picture of the year. He also notably played Chubbs Peterson in the golf comedy “Happy Gilmore,” starring Adam Sandler.Mr. Weathers displayed his range in several roles on film and television, including appearing in the 2019 science-fiction series “The Mandalorian” and in the drama series “Chicago Justice” (2017) and the long-running “Chicago P.D.”He was a linebacker for the Oakland Raiders from 1970 to 1971, and he later briefly played in the Canadian Football League.
