25 Free Performances Come to Bryant Park Starting in June

The park will host events for live audiences of 200 with institutions including the New York Philharmonic, Jazz at Lincoln Center, Joe’s Pub and the Classical Theater of Harlem. With arts performances in New York slowly starting up again, one city tradition is finally set to return: free outdoor events in marquee locations. From June to September, Bryant Park will present a series of 25 programs from some of the city’s most prominent institutions and performance groups, including the New York Philharmonic, Carnegie Hall, Jazz at Lincoln Center, Joe’s Pub, the Classical Theater of Harlem, Paul Taylor Dance Company and the Town Hall.Dan Biederman, the president of the Bryant Park Corporation and the park’s longtime guardian, said the plan for the series began to take shape during the winter, when the park installed its annual ice rink and holiday market.“Thinking ahead to the summer, we thought, the concert halls are probably still going to be closed,” Biederman said in an interview. “Let’s play the same role, making Midtown more cheerful and drawing people to whatever extent we can.”City Parks Foundation’s SummerStage also announced this week that it would be returning to Central Park and other locations with in-person concerts, including a benefit show on Sept. 17 by the band Dawes.Bryant Park’s season functions as a coming-together of New York arts groups, many of which have had few opportunities for live events since the pandemic arrived.“One of the good things that has come out of the pandemic is that there has been a level of cooperation between the different arts organizations,” said Deborah Borda, the chief executive of the New York Philharmonic, which opens the season with four nights of concerts, starting June 9.The Philharmonic began putting on small-scale events throughout city last summer through its NY Phil Bandwagon program, and it is set to perform with a scaled-down ensemble this week at The Shed. Even by June, Borda said, the orchestra does not expect to be back to performing at full size. “We’re not doing Mahler symphonies,” she said.Bryant Park will limit attendance to 200 people for each performance, although producers say it is possible that state regulations could allow bigger crowds as the season progresses. The events are free, but tickets must be reserved in advance. Most events will also be livestreamed.Once arriving at the park, patrons will have their temperatures checked and be shown to their seats, which will be arranged with room for social distancing. The park does not plan to require vaccinations or proof of negative virus tests, but it is considering those as options, according to Dan Fishman, the park’s director of public events.Among the other organizations participating in Bryant Park’s series this summer are Elisa Monte Dance, Harlem Stage, National Sawdust, New York Chinese Cultural Center, Limón Dance Company and Greenwich House Music School. Singers from the New York City Opera will perform a Pride concert on June 18.Many groups and institutions have been scaled down or cocooned altogether since last year.“We’ve been in hibernation,” said Tom Wirtshafter, the president of the Town Hall, which has put on more than 60 virtual programs during the pandemic but, as with most venues, had to furlough most of its staff.Town Hall, which opened its doors in 1921, will close Bryant Park’s season on Sept. 20 with a 100th-anniversary event featuring Chris Thile, the mandolin player whose eclectic tastes range from bluegrass to Bach.Tiffany Rea-Fisher, the artistic director of Elisa Monte Dance, who also curates dance performances at the park, said her company has performed only twice in the last year. It will perform on Aug. 20 with the Paul Taylor Dance Company, and Rea-Fisher said it was not easy to find other dance groups that would be prepared.“It was challenging, finding companies that were ready, stamina-wise,” she said. “You don’t want to bring dancers back after a year and have them hit a performance — it’s just asking for injury.”But like others, she said was thrilled, “smiling ear to ear,” at the prospect of performing once again, and doing so in a prominent spot for New Yorkers.“To be able to do what you trained for,” Rea-Fisher, said, “it’s so joyful, it’s so fulfilling; it feels sublime.” More

Christina Aguilera Admits Follow-Up to Her Debut Spanish Album Was 20 Years Overdue

    Instagram

Having been busy working on two records, the ‘Dirrty’ hitmaker claims to have fallen in love with music all over again after going through soul-searching over the past year.

    Apr 14, 2021

    AceShowbiz –
Christina Aguilera has promised fans another Spanish album is in the works, confessing it’s “about 20 years overdue.”

The “Dirrty” hitmaker, whose father is Ecuadorian, has been busy developing two new musical projects – one in English and another in Spanish, and although recording the new material has “re-inspired” the singer, she insists it will be a little while longer before she is ready to share her latest tracks.

“I’m months away from anything being announced,” she tells Health magazine. “I’m simultaneously working on my English record and the follow-up to my debut Spanish album – about 20 years overdue.”

“I’m a perfectionist and want to give everything my best – especially because of the soul-searching I’ve done over the past year and the new perspective I have. I am re-inspired and have reconnected with myself. I’ve fallen in love with music all over again, which is a really big thing to say, having spent my entire career in music.”

Aguilera’s last album, “Liberation”, was released in 2018, while her only Spanish-language studio project to date is “Mi Reflejo (My Reflection)”, which dropped in 2000.

Elsewhere in the interview, Aguilera was asked if she is proud of the success she has had. “I’m proud of my honesty. It’s a really hard thing to stick to in this business, especially when you’ve grown up under a microscope at a time when society was very critical of young women,” she responded.

“I’ve had to work through a lot of insecurities in front of everybody,” the 40-year-old went on to add. “Every setback has catapulted me forward. I think that’s my fighting spirit. And, at the end of the day, living that truth and being honest has always propelled me forward.”

Morgan Wallen Vows Not to Return to Stage This Summer Following N-Word Controversy

    WENN/Judy Eddy

The ‘Whiskey Glasses’ singer takes to Instagram to let his fans know that he will not be performing in the coming months as he continues working on himself.

    Apr 14, 2021

    AceShowbiz –
Morgan Wallen has once again addressed his racial slur scandal. Admitting that he needs time to “work” on himself two months after he was caught using the N-word outside of his home, the “Whiskey Glasses” singer vowed that he will not return to the stage this summer.

On Tuesday, April 13, the 27-year-old shared on Instagram a handwritten note about the self-reflection he had over the past few months. “I wanted to let you guys know that I’ve taken a couple months away and feel like I’ve really worked on myself. I’m proud of the work I’ve put in and in many ways thankful to have had the time to do it. I’ve needed this time off,” he first divulged.

“I found this time away to be very valuable to me in many ways, but I feel like I need a little more of it and therefore will not be performing tour dates this summer,” the rising country star added. “It means I won’t be playing festivals or the Luke Bryan tour dates. But it’s important to me personally, if you can, still go to these shows – support country music. Country music is back and that’s a beautiful damn thing.”

The “7 Summers” crooner then promised his followers that he “will always strive to be better.” He further pointed out, “Not only has this time revealed to me the ways in which I want to improve but it’s also reminded me that I am still very proud of who I am and the man I am becoming.”

The letter came two months after he was caught using the N-word in a video filmed by his neighbor. He, however, has already issued his apology and expressed his remorse. “Obviously the natural thing to do is apologize further and just continue to apologize but because you got caught and that’s not what I wanted to do,” he said in an Instagram video posted in February. “My words matter. My words can truly hurt a person and at my core, that’s not what I’m okay with.”

    AceShowbiz –
Selena Gomez and Jennifer Lopez are booked to promote COVID-19 vaccination through a music event. The two superstars are on board to support a star-studded concert called “Vax Live: The Concert to Reunite the World”.

Presented by Global Citizen, the concert will be hosted by Gomez and feature performances by J.Lo, Eddie Vedder, Foo Fighters, J Balvin and H.E.R.. among others. The event’s goal is to inspire confidence in COVID-19 vaccines and encourage people to be inoculated in countries where it is available. It also aims to encourage corporations and philanthropists to use their money to help get vaccines to 27 million frontline workers in countries where vaccinations are not yet available even to those most in danger.

“I’m honored to be hosting ‘Vax Live: The Concert to Reunite the World’,” Gomez said in a statement. “This is a historic moment to encourage people around the world to take the COVID-19 vaccine when it becomes available to them, call on world leaders to share vaccine doses equitably and to bring people together for a night of music in a way that hasn’t felt possible in the past year. I can’t wait to be a part of it.”

Global Citizen co-founder/CEO Hugh Evans also explained the purpose of the event, “As a global community, we are in a race against time and the key to coming back together is the vaccine. We need to build vaccine confidence in the U.S. and globally, and encourage people to take the vaccine as quickly as possible.”

“There is a light at the end of this tunnel,” Evans added, “but getting vaccines to everyone, everywhere regardless of who they are or where they are from, is key to ensuring the end of this pandemic around the world. We must all unite to get back on track to eradicating extreme poverty.”

Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti has voiced his support for the concert. He stated, “Global Citizen is giving voice to a core message to Angelenos, Americans, and citizens of the world: every time someone gets vaccinated, we move another step closer to ending this pandemic. ‘Vax Live’ will open our eyes to the future we can forge if we all do our part, follow health guidelines and get our shots as soon as we’re eligible – a return to concerts with our fellow fans, gatherings with loved ones, and the embrace of family and friends.”

Funkmaster Flex Calls Cardi B a 'Terrible Rapper,' Twitter Reacts

    Instagram/WENN/Avalon

The Hot 97 radio host divides social media users after he calls out the ‘WAP’ hitmaker over her rapping and songwriting skills, but praises her as ‘an amazing entertainer.’

    Apr 14, 2021

    AceShowbiz –
Funkmaster Flex isn’t holding back with his comments on Cardi B. The veteran DJ and hip-hop artist has dissed the latter over her rapping and songwriting skills during a recent sit-down with the “Cigar Talk” podcast.

“I do think Cardi B is a terrible rapper, my n***a, I just do, man,” the Hot 97 radio host, whose real name is Aston George Taylor Jr., told host Najichill. “She’s a terrible rapper, man. I don’t know. Even if somebody [else] wrote [her songs], those aren’t good bars. So somebody sold you bad bars! Is nobody gonna f**king say it?”

Despite criticizing the Bronx femcee as a rapper, Funkmaster Flex praised Cardi as an entertainer. He said of her outstanding qualities, “She’s an amazing entertainer, I love her on social media, I love the way she talks about a subject, I like her whole swag, I like everything.”

Cardi has not responded to Funkmaster Flex’s remarks, but it didn’t take long for social media users to react to his opinion. Disagreeing with him, one person tweeted, “Hey funk flex. We like cardi for her overall package as an artist/musician/entertainer. Sorry if you’re judging her purely as a rapper.”

      See also…

Another defended the “WAP hitmaker, “She is not a great lyricist but she can make hits. 5 number 1 hits so far??? That is something not many in Hip Hop have ever done. I am an old head but i try not to be the stay off my lawn guy when it comes to these new artists. Let them make that money and congratulate them.”

A third fan accused Funkmaster Flex of being spiteful as saying, “looooool idgaf how legendary he is this is so cap. just say you hate the woman and GO.” Another claimed he was just trying to gain some clout, “Never heard of him till he spoke on cardi. Guess he got the attention he begged for.”

However, there were others who agreed with Funkmaster Flex. “He’s RIGHT! She is very entertaining regardless if you a fan or not. I saw her live once and I enjoyed it. But she can’t rap,” one of them argued.

Another remarked, “Cardi B is a machine and so far it’s working. And the title of a rapper is used to loosely nowadays anyways.” Someone else pointed out, “Imagine having all the numbers, topping charts and awards and yet you ain’t even on anyone’s top list. Girl please.”

This isn’t the first time Funkmaster Flex has taken aim at Cardi B. Back in August 2018, the 52-year-old accused the Grammy Award-winning artist of paying DJs to play her music. “I met Cardi and her management and I respected his and Cardi’s hustle! BUT LETS BE CLEAR.. CARDI’S TEAM AND MANY OTHER ARTIST (in the beginning of career) PAY DJS TO PLAY RECORDS AND SAY THAT ‘THEY ARE HOT’ (Since I never took a penny from a rapper I’m not scared to speak on it) I have emails I’ve gotten from labels over the years with names and figures!” he tweeted in response to her video in which she spoke of fans’ support to her since her song “Bodak Yellow” blew up.
