  • Nicki Minaj and 6ix9ine to Use New Collaboration Song to Support Black Lives Matter Protests

    Instagram

Some of the proceeds from ‘Trollz’, which will be released on June 12, will go to The Bail Project Inc. which provides free bail assistance to low-income individuals amid fight against racial injustice.
    Jun 11, 2020
AceShowbiz – Nicki Minaj has reunited with fellow rapper Tekashi 6ix9ine for a new song benefitting those in need of bail assistance amid the Black Lives Matter protests.
The stars, who previously collaborated on 2018 track “FEFE”, have come together for “Trollz”, the second single of Tekashi’s music comeback following a stint behind bars for gang-related crimes.
The tune will be released on Friday, June 12, and Minaj reveals some of the proceeds will support the ongoing fight for social and racial justice.
Taking to Instagram on Wednesday, she writes, “A portion of the proceeds from #Trollz including merch items, will be going directly to The Bail Project Inc. The fund provides free bail assistance to low-income individuals who can’t afford to pay bail while awaiting their trial.
“We want to protect and support the thousands of brave people working on the front lines of social justice, using their voices to demand AN END to the targeting and killing of Black Americans by the police. #BlackLivesMatter”.

Tekashi had previously decided to press pause on his new music release plans “out of respect” for the Black Lives Matter movement, in the wake of the death of African-American George Floyd at the hands of a white police officer in Minnesota in late May.

Minaj isn’t the only artist willing to work with Tekashi after he turned on his former gangmembers to cooperate with federal prosecutors and secure a lesser sentence – he’s also teased a sequel to singer Akon’s 2004 release “Locked Up”.

The ‘Middle Child’ rapper, who has joined the Black Lives Matter protest, penned the protest track back in 2014 following the fatal shooting of Michael Brown by an officer in Ferguson, Missouri.
    Jun 11, 2020
AceShowbiz – J. Cole is to release a 2014 track he penned about racial injustice on streaming services following the huge protests sparked by the death of George Floyd at the hands of police.
The musician showed up to stand alongside protesters in his hometown of Fayetteville, North Carolina earlier this month, as they took to the street in one of many demonstrations demanding an end to police brutality and systemic racism in the U.S. and across the world.
In response to the protests rapper and singer, full name Jermaine Lamarr Cole, has greenlit the full release of “Be Free”, the protest track he penned following the fatal shooting of Michael Brown by an officer in Ferguson, Missouri in 2014.
His manager and Dreamville Records co-founder Ibrahim Hamad revealed plans to share the song, which originally only appeared on SoundCloud, across all streaming platforms.
“I’ve def seen a bunch of y’all tweets and got a bunch of texts asking for “Be Free” on streaming services,” Hamad wrote on Twitter on Monday, June 08. “I spoke to Cole today though had to let him know about that and he with so let me work on getting up this week.”

At the time of “Be Free”‘s original release, Cole wrote alongside the track: “Rest in Peace to Michael Brown and to every young black man murdered in America, whether by the hands of white or black. Three other officers who were present when policeman Derek Chauvin knelt on Floyd’s neck for nine minutes, resulting in his death, have been charged with aiding and abetting Chauvin’s alleged crime.

  • Grammy Awards to No Longer Use 'Urban' Term in Major Category

Following in the leads made by Republic Records, the Recording Academy makes the announcement as part of the organization’s annual changes to its rules and guidelines.
    Jun 11, 2020
AceShowbiz – The Grammy Awards will no longer use the term “urban”, America’s Recording Academy announced Wednesday, June 10.
As part of the organization’s annual changes to its rules and guidelines, the term, typically used to describe black music, will be removed from its awards and language. It comes after Republic Records announced last week that it too will cease to use the term “urban.”
Best Urban Contemporary Album has been renamed Best Progressive R&B Album, to highlight albums that include the more progressive elements of R&B and may include samples and elements of hip-hop, rap, dance and electronic music.
While Best Rap/Sung Performance Category has been renamed Best Melodic Rap Performance to represent the inclusivity of the growing hybrid performance trends within the rap genre.
“It’s something we’ve been discussing for a couple of years, and the term has been a hot button for a while,” interim president and CEO Harvey Mason Jr. tells Variety. “A lot of creators and people in that genre didn’t like that description and felt it pigeonholed certain styles of music, so when our constituents brought that to us in the form of a proposal, we listened and voted to approve, as asked by the people in that community.”
He continued, “It’s all part of what I hope will be a and a new chapter in our history. We’re listening to and learning from our partners and constituents and stakeholders; we’re trying to make sure we’re able to pivot and change and adapt; and we want to be really inclusive.”

The changes, part of an effort to advance a “very transparent and transformed Recording Academy,” also include updates to the Best New Artist category, Latin, R&B and Rap Fields, and Nominations Review Committees.

  • Coachella 2020: Rescheduled Dates Completely Canceled Amid Uncertainty Over COVID-19 Crisis

AEG CEO Dan Beckerman has reportedly sent a note to employees stating that live events with fans are unlikely to happen any time soon and won’t resume until sometime in 2021.
    Jun 11, 2020
AceShowbiz – Coachella is not happening at all in 2020, according to a note to employees from AEG CEO Dan Beckerman.
The Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival, which was scheduled to take place over two weekends in April 2020, was previously postponed until October and set to be held at the Empire Polo Club in Indio.
However, as events continued to be cancelled or delayed, the 2020 installment of the annual gathering has been called off altogether, with Beckerman revealing, “It is clear now that live events with fans will not resume for many months and likely not until sometime in 2021.”
Alongside the note, obtained by Billboard, editors noted it’s “also unlikely rescheduled events will take place this year… Officials with Goldenvoice are still trying to determine whether the two-weekend, 125,000-person-per-day festival will make a limited-capacity return in April 2021 or a larger, higher capacity comeback in October 2021.”
The report also noted that “about 40 per cent” of ticket buyers requested refunds for this year’s festival.
“AEG officials think they could probably pull off the festival in April at 60 per cent capacity, but are holding off on making a final rescheduling decision until there is more clarity on the pandemic’s overall trajectory,” they added.
Travis Scott (II), Frank Ocean and Rage Against the Machine had been tapped to headline the event.

  • Lollapalooza 2020 to Go Virtual Following Cancellation by City of Chicago

Organizers behind the annual four-day festival assure music fans that they are working hard to bring the city and the world together through live music from July 30 to August 2.
    Jun 10, 2020
AceShowbiz – Lollapalooza 2020 will be going digital after authorities in Chicago, Illinois officially cancelled the summer festival.
A line-up for the big concert was never announced as a result of the coronavirus pandemic, which brought the live industry to a standstill in March and led to the postponement of California’s Coachella and Stagecoach festivals, and the axing of Britain’s Glastonbury and the Ultra Music Festival in Miami, Florida, among other events.
Now Chicago Mayor Lori E. Lightfoot and representatives from the Department of Cultural Affairs and Special Events have formally scrapped this year’s Lollapalooza as restrictions remain in place preventing large gatherings.
Organisers behind the annual four-day festival, founded by Jane’s Addiction rocker Perry Farrell in 1991, have since revealed they will instead be staging a virtual event during the same weekend to give fans in isolation something to look forward to.
“We wish we could bring Lollapalooza to Grant Park again this year, but we understand why things can’t move forward as planned,” they share in a statement online. “The health and safety of our fans, artists, partners, staff and community is always our highest priority.”
“Rest assured, we will be working hard behind the scenes to deliver Chicago a spectacular celebration of Lollapalooza’s 30th Anniversary in the summer of 2021, and we can’t wait to celebrate with you.”
“Keep July 30 – August 2, 2020 on your calendars as we honor our annual tradition by bringing Chicago, and the world, together around our common bond of community, civic engagement, and of course, live music,” they add.
“The weekend-long virtual event will include performances from around the city and beyond, epic archival sets from Chicago and the festival’s six international editions, never-before-seen footage from the 1990’s (sic) and much more.”

A full schedule and further details about the livestream are expected to be released next month.
