  • Artist of the Week: Suga

    Twitter

The BTS member also known as Agust D releases a new mixtape during the ongoing coronavirus lockdown and sweeps the iTunes Top Albums and Songs charts around the world.
    Jun 1, 2020
AceShowbiz – Multitalented might be the word best to describe Min Yoon-gi, fondly called Suga by his loyal devotees. A singer, pianist, dancer, rapper, songwriter, and producer, the 27-year-old musician seems to possess every known talent in music industry.
Suga started writing songs at 13 and learned more about composing and arranging music at 17 when working a part-time job at a recording studio. He started as an underground rapper before rising to stardom as a member of Korean global sensation BTS.
He wrote and produced a number of songs for the boyband. To date, he has over 60 songs to his credit. Many of those tracks became popular with fans and charted all over the globe. As one of the Bangtan Boys, he appeared on Billboard’s Digital Song Sales chart more than 30 times.
In the past few years, he was busy touring nonstop around the world with his bandmates. As the band’s popularity reached a high peak, they’re spreading their wings to the U.S. by announcing a North American tour but the plan came to a screeching halt due to coronavirus crisis.
While Suga and his bandmates were disappointed by the tour cancellation, it allowed them to take a break from the constant travelling and rejuvenate. Still, Suga kept his creative mind working during the lockdown. He used his return to South Korea to work on his solo project.
Under his moniker as a solo artist Agust D, he dropped a mixtape called “D-2”. A follow-up to the self-titled one released four years ago, the new record dominated the iTunes Top Albums Charts in 80 countries including the U.S., Canada, Germany, and Japan.
Described as a “documentation of [himself] from 2016 onwards”, the mixtape is a treat for his hardcore fans amid the gloomy pandemic. He collaborated with fellow BTS member RM, American singer-songwriter MAX, and Nell’s frontman Kim Jong Wan.
One of his solo tracks “Daechwita” charted high on the iTunes songs chart, second only to Lady GaGa’s new single “Rain On Me” featuring Ariana Grande. The other nine songs in his mixtape were trailing behind the top 2, giving no room for other artists to occupy the rest of the top 11.

  • Suga's Label Removes Cult Leader Jim Jones' Speech From Mixtape Following Backlash

    Instagram

Bosses at Big Hit Entertainment claim they’re not aware of Jim Jones’ identity and apologize for sampling the cult leader’s speech for the BTS member’s new mixtape.
    Jun 1, 2020
AceShowbiz – BTS’ managers have apologised to fans after failing to prevent a speech by controversial Jonestown Massacre cult leader Jim Jones from making it onto band member Suga’s new track, “What Do You Think?”.
The song appears on the rapper’s Agust D mixtape, “D-2”, which shot to the top of iTunes charts upon its release earlier this month, and Big Hit Entertainment officials have now released a statement insisting they were not aware of the sample’s source and its implications.
Jones was responsible for the mass suicide of over 900 people at the Peoples Temple in Venezuela in 1978.
“The vocal sample of the speech in the introduction of the song ‘What Do You Think?’ on the mixtape was selected without any special intent by the producer who worked on the track, who was unaware of the identity of the speaker and used the sample for the overall atmosphere of the song,” the statement reads.
“After the speech sample was selected, the company followed our internal process and carried out procedures for reviewing the appropriateness of the content. However, in both the selection and review processes, we committed an error in not recognizing the inappropriateness of the content and including the sample in the song.”
“Big Hit Entertainment has processes for reviewing its diverse content targeted toward a global audience for potential social, cultural, and historical issues. However, we are experiencing the reality that there are limits to understanding and correctly responding to every situation. In this case, we were not able to recognize the issue in advance and displayed a lack of understanding about the relevant historical and social issues. We apologize to those who felt uncomfortable or hurt because of this.”
The sample has been removed and the track has been re-released.
“The artist also feels embarrassed and deeply responsible for a problem that has arisen in an area that he did not consider,” the statement continues. “Big Hit Entertainment will use this incident as a lesson to conduct its production process more thoroughly.”

    Jun 1, 2020
AceShowbiz – Carlos Santana and his wife, Cindy Blackman Santana, have received praise from Yoko Ono for their reimagining of John Lennon’s classic, “Imagine”.
The widow of the late Beatles icon is raving about the couple’s new charity cover, which benefits the WhyHunger and SongAid organisations in a bid to help feed hungry people who have been adversely affected by the COVID-19 pandemic.
“Now more than ever, it’s important that we all come together to ensure no one in our world goes hungry,” Yoko Ono said in a statement to Rolling Stone. “I am excited that Cindy Blackman Santana and Carlos Santana’s beautiful rendition of Imagine is helping to kick off this important campaign and bring my late husband John Lennon’s vision of a peaceful world, free from hunger, to this critical cause.”

Music Industry Joins Blackout Tuesday in Solidarity With Black Community

    Twitter/Tinashe

Bosses of record label and radio station have decided to join the grassroots campaign and go silent for one day to protest against racially-fueled police brutality.
    Jun 1, 2020
AceShowbiz – Music industry officials have pledged to join the grassroots campaign to make June 2, 2020 Black Out Tuesday in honour of George Floyd.
Following the killing of the African-American Minnesota man at the hands of white police officers and subsequent nationwide protests, music industry members have pledged to join the initiative.
Billed as “a day to disconnect from work and reconnect with our community,” the campaign – promoted with the hashtag #TheShowMustBePaused – has gained support from people like Dirty Hit Records’ Jamie Oborne, former Hot 97 music director Karlie Hustle, and Beats 1 host Ebro Darden.
“Due to recent events please join us as we take an urgent step of action to provoke accountability and change,” a post on the movement states. “As gatekeepers of the culture, it’s our responsibility to not only come together to celebrate the wins, but also hold each other up during a loss.”
In supporting Black Out Tuesday, Darden wrote on social media, “All of my shows are cancelled. I will air replays of conversations with community activists, politicians and revolutionary music.”
Record label bosses have also spoken out against the killing of Floyd in recent days, with Columbia Records, Universal Music Group, Warner Music, Sony Music, and more taking to social media to condemn police brutality.

Kylie Minogue Hopes to Raise Spirits With 'Grown-Up Disco' Album

    WENN

The ‘Spinning Around’ singer teases her next studio installment, claiming that coronavirus crisis encouraged her to write songs that could have an uplifting impact.
    May 31, 2020
AceShowbiz – Kylie Minogue’s forthcoming self-titled album will see the star returning to her pop music roots.
The Australian star’s last LP, 2018’s “Golden”, saw the singer experiment with a more country-driven sound, but speaking to British GQ magazine, she revealed the forthcoming Kylie is “grown-up disco.”
“(It’s) difficult even for me to explain,” she said. “But even grown-ups need some pure pop fun.”
Reflecting on the resurgence of the disco sound from the ’70s in recent years, Kylie commented, “It’s all cyclical, right? I loved disco as an eight-year-old, so it’s been a long love affair.”
“I’m loving the modern interpretations of the genre now,” she said, before revealing her new sound also has an early-’00s influence. “There’s a lot of early 2000s love around at the moment. Both feel like good times for me, so I’m channelling that into this record.”
The “Spinning Around” star also confessed the Covid-19 crisis and lockdown also encouraged her to produce an uplifting record.
“The songs that are pure escapism have even stronger purpose,” she said.
