Neil Young's Brother Calls Transformation Into Songwriter With 'Hey America' an 'Organic Event'

Former golf professional Bob Young wrote his first song at the age of 78 after being so fired up from watching Donald Trump on TV, and recorded it with a band he named The Peterboroughs.

    Oct 29, 2020
AceShowbiz – Neil Young’s brother has written and recorded his first song at the age of 78.
Former golf professional Bob Young is so fired up about the upcoming U.S. general election, he decided to write a song about his feelings, “Hey America”, and he’s so pleased with it he has recorded it with a band he has named The Peterboroughs, which features his famous brother on harmonica.
“I didn’t set out to become a songwriter and singer at 78 years of age,” Bob said in a statement. “It was and is an organic event. I was watching Donald Trump on TV a couple of years ago and wrote down a few lines. When I got home, I found I could play those lines on guitar. Gradually, it became what it is now. It took a while to be able to play and sing the song from start to finish. When I could finally accomplish that, it was a victory.”

“The recording process all happened at once. I had never done that either. It was a band performance that had spontaneity. In another session, some vocal harmony was added, and Neil played harmonica. My perspective is simultaneously that of a participant and spectator. I am watching myself do this.”

The recording prompted brother Neil to do something he has never done – direct the video with the help of his wife, actress Daryl Hannah.
“The filming of Hey America was done in the COVID-19 environment,” Neil tells Rolling Stone. “One shot where we’re all standing together, singing without masks was done in three separate shoots with the same background and assembled in post-production to look like three people singing together.”

  • Artist of the Week: John Legend

The ‘All of Me’ hitmaker is keen to bring some light during the difficult time with his upcoming seventh studio album ‘Bigger Love’ led by an uplifting title track.
    Jun 15, 2020
AceShowbiz – John Legend is all about love. At a very difficult and challenging time like these where the world is hurting amid the global health crisis and worldwide protests against racial injustice, the “All of Me” hitmaker is determined to spread joy and kindness.
The first black man who became an EGOT for winning Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, and Tony is gearing up for the release of his seventh studio installment. Called “Bigger Love”, the album is two years in the making following his 2018 holiday set “A Legendary Christmas”.
The title track is an uplifting song that offered fans a break from the doom and gloom of 2020. “I just hope it gives people a moment to feel good,” he explained. “I know things are very difficult and a bit scary right now and music isn’t going to solve everyone’s problems, but hopefully it can give people a bit of a lift and bring some light to these dark times.”
The bouncy track was accompanied by a heartwarming music video that featured his wife Chrissy Teigen and their two adorable young kids Luna and Miles. The family footage was fused with homemade clips of fans around the globe dancing to the upbeat single.
The album is announced to be released June 19. It’s expected to make a notable debut if his chart history is any indication – he appeared on Billboard Hot 100 more than a dozen times with his love anthem “All of Me” dominating the chart in 2013 and all of his previous six albums became the top 20 on the R&B Albums chart.
For an artist who’s preparing for an album launch, it’s only natural for them to hype up the project. But promoting an album seems to take a backseat for John Legend. Instead, he’s actively using his platform to amplify black voices amid the Black Lives Matter movement that swept across the country and overseas.
He condemned the killing of George Floyd and supported campaign to “defund” police departments and give more to healthcare and education. He’s also seeking justice for the death of medical worker Breonna Taylor, calling for the arrest of the cops responsible for her death.

  • The Beatles' First-Ever Abbey Road Jam Season at Center of Multi-Million Dollar Lawsuit

The family of late sound engineer Geoff Emerick and the mammoth Universal Music Group are fighting in court over newly-found recording of the Fab Four’s jam session.
    Jun 15, 2020
AceShowbiz – A recording of a jam session by The Beatles is to be at the centre of a court battle allegedly set to begin on Tuesday, June 16, 2020 after it was discovered in late sound engineer Geoff Emerick’s home.
The demo is said to be worth $6.3 million with a video of the session, taken before Ringo Starr joined the group as a drummer, reportedly seeing The Beatles perform at Abbey Road for the first time.
According to Britain’s The Sun newspaper, the recording was deemed to not be of good enough quality for the group so Emerick was told by EMI he should destroy it. However, he is said to have instead kept it in a safe in his Los Angeles home, in its original box.
When Emerick died in October 2018, however, the recording was found and the publication claimed that Universal Music Group, who took over EMI in 2012, are now in a legal battle with the late sound engineer’s family over who the tape belongs to.
According to editors at The Sun, Emerick’s estate is arguing they are entitled to the recording under Finders Law. Universal bosses, meanwhile, allegedly claim the law does not count in this case as Emerick was told he should destroy the recording by EMI.
Songs recorded on the demo are believed to include “Love Me Do”, which featured on the group’s debut album “Please Please Me” in 1963.
“It’s an amazing find. It’s been estimated at £5 million but could be worth much more,” a source told the publication. “Despite wanting it destroyed, Universal all these years later want it back. They know how huge this find is.”
Ringo joined The Beatles in August 1962 after he was asked by John Lennon to replace then current member Pete Best as the band’s drummer.

  • Phoebe Bridgers Calls The Strokes a Music Industry Plant

    Instagram

The female indie rock musician disses Julian Casablancas and his bandmates while calling out the double standard in music industry that celebrates male rockers but tends to dismiss female acts.
    Jun 14, 2020
AceShowbiz – Phoebe Bridgers has criticised the double standard that see male acts like The Strokes celebrated despite extensive music industry connections, but female rockers dismissed as inauthentic.
Bridgers’ emergence as a young woman in rock has resulted in social media trolls accusing her of being a manufactured “industry plant.”
However, she claims the description is far better applied to The Strokes – whose bassist Albert Hammond, Jr. is the son of singer-songwriter Albert Hammond and frontman Julian Casablancas, who also came from a wealthy background.
“The Strokes are an industry plant – literally! Everybody knows that, at least in music, but it’s never made anyone like them less. It’s such an insane f**king double standard,” the 25-year-old musician tells the NME website. “If you have wealthy parents, you’re not allowed to make music as a woman, but you’re rewarded for it as a man. Every white boy who is mediocre is an industry plant by that standard.”

The singer-songwriter, who accused fellow musician Ryan Adams of inappropriate behaviour after a brief relationship, also believes the way the industry is set up aids bad behaviour.
“With music, every group is much more isolated. It can happen with power dynamics and #MeToo s**t, but also with a manager who’s just f**king every single person over.” And the “Kyoto” hitmaker wishes she had more support when she first met Adams, who released her first record on his label in 2014.
“When I met Ryan, I didn’t know anybody in music for the most part,” she reveals. “But then I would then meet tons of people who were like, ‘Oh my God – he is a trash person.’ I didn’t have that when I was 20, and a lot of people still don’t.”

The Colombian musician plans a hi-tech virtual concert dubbed ‘Behind the Colores: The Live Experience’ in order to promote his new studio album amid the pandemic.
    Jun 14, 2020
AceShowbiz – Colombian superstar J Balvin is set to take the livestream world by storm by creating a virtual special to showcase his new album “Colores”.
The singer released the album at the height of the coronavirus lockdown and he has spent weeks working with creatives to try and find a way to perform the tracks from his pad in Medellin without the show appearing too homemade – and now he’s ready to show fans what he has come up with.
“Behind the Colores: The Live Experience” will hit YouTube on June 20, 2020 and J Balvin can’t wait for devotees to check it out.
“I thought, ‘What can I do that will be different from what reality allows, and that you can only view this way through your cellphone or your laptop, but not in real life,’ ” he tells Billboard. “Simply doing a filmed live concert is never as exciting as the in-person experience. But, what about a concert that’s built to be seen on a screen? There you can really do something different… It’s about creating something that everyone will be talking about.”
The show will be an augmented reality experience, in which Balvin will perform live in a virtual space inside his home while directors in Los Angeles control the look of the broadcast.
“This is a completely different thing,” creative director and producer Antony Ginandjar says, revealing the concept took a month to put together.”
