'Peaky Blinders' Creator Recalls How Jason Statham Lost Starring Role to Cillian Murphy

    Instagram

In a new interview, Steven Knight admits that he initially set his sight on having the ‘Mechanic: Resurrection’ star lead the cast as brutal Birmingham crime boss Tommy Shelby.
    Jun 4, 2020
AceShowbiz – “Peaky Blinders” creator Steven Knight had his sights set on Jason Statham to lead the cast of his hit series before Cillian Murphy forced him to reconsider.
The writer and director met both actors in Los Angeles and came away from the get togethers convinced Statham was the man to play brutal Birmingham, England, crime boss Tommy Shelby.
He tells Esquire, “One of the reasons was because physically, in the room, Jason is Jason.”
But Murphy helped to change his mind with a text, which read simply: “Remember, I’m an actor.”
“Cillian, when you meet him, isn’t Tommy, obviously, but I was stupid enough not to understand that,” Knight adds. “He can transform himself. If you meet him in the street he is a totally different human being.”

Production on the sixth season of “Peaky Blinders” was set to start as the coronavirus pandemic shut down the film industry in the U.K.

'Peaky Blinders' Adds 'The Irishman' Star Stephen Graham

    WENN

The former ‘Boardwalk Empire’ actor is expected to join the cast members of the British television show when it resumes filming as soon as coronavirus is over.
    Apr 26, 2020
AceShowbiz – Stephen Graham is joining the cast of hit U.K. TV show “Peaky Blinders” when it resumes filming after the coronavirus.
According to British newspaper The Sun, the star has said he was about to start filming on the show just before shooting shut down last month, March 2020 due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
“I was supposed to be starting Peaky Blinders but that has been put on hold indefinitely,” he revealed. “My agent spent a lot of time putting that together.”
Stephen will join its star Cillian Murphy in the cast and will follow Tom Hardy, Adrien Brody, Sam Neill, and Sam Claflin as the latest big name to sign up for the hit show.
Shooting on “Peaky Blinders” was officially halted on March 16 – four days before U.K. officials announced pubs, restaurants and bars would have to close, and Helen McCrory revealed that she, Cillian, and its producers asked the BBC to halt production.
“Together with the producers, we approached the BBC and said we’re going to pull this now before we have to do this down the line,” she told Deadline.com.

Helen McCrory: Cillian Murphy and I Were Behind 'Peaky Blinders' Production Pause

    WENN/Avalon/Instar

The actress playing Polly Gray on the BBC drama series explains that she and her co-star found it ‘uncomfortable’ to continue filming while the coronavirus pandemic began to escalate.
    Apr 7, 2020
AceShowbiz – “Peaky Blinders” stars Helen McCrory and Cillian Murphy called for production on the show to be halted last month as they were “uncomfortable” filming as the coronavirus pandemic began to escalate.
TV and film productions across the world have now gone on hiatus due to the spread of the COVID-19 disease, with many governments bringing in lockdowns that stop people leaving their homes for non-essential reasons.
Shooting on “Peaky Blinders” was officially halted on March 16 – four days before U.K. officials announced pubs, restaurants and bars would have to close, and Helen has now revealed that she, Cillian and its producers asked the BBC to halt production before they were told to.
McCrory says she was doing hair and make-up tests when she felt “something very big is coming” and no longer wanted to continue her work on the hit show.
“The next morning I woke and told my producer, ‘I’m not comfortable doing this anymore.’ Cillian Murphy did the same,” she tells Deadline.com. “Together with the producers, we approached the BBC and said we’re going to pull this now before we have to do this down the line.”
The actress, who plays “Peaky Blinders”‘ Polly Gray, the matriarch of the Shelby gangster family, led by Cillian’s character Tommy Shelby, says TV work is now “terribly unimportant.” Instead, she and her husband Damian Lewis have been fundraising to get meals delivered to health workers fighting COVID-19 in Britain.
“We haven’t slept and we’re on the phone all the time,” she says of their project. “You’re improvising and making it up as you go along because it’s never been done before. Now we’ve got a website up, feednhs.com, and on that website, hospitals can tap on and leave details.”
Helen and Damian have now helped raise almost $1 million (£810,000) for the cause through a Just Giving page, and fundraising efforts like comedian Matt Lucas’ charity single “Thank You Baked Potato”.

'Peaky Blinders' Director Left Gutted by Postponement of Season 6 Production

    Netflix/Robert Viglasky

Though lamenting over the loss of months of hard work prepping the start of filming because of coronavirus, Anthony Byrne encourages others to ‘find the positive in all of this and use it’.
    Mar 19, 2020
AceShowbiz – “Peaky Blinders” director Anthony Byrne was gutted when he had to postpone filming for the sixth season of the hit show because so much work had gone into the production.
The coronavirus pandemic forced producers to put the series on hold and Byrne admits he’s still struggling with the decision, because he was all set to start.
Posting a photo of Cillian Murphy’s character Tommy Shelby drowning his sorrows in a pub on Instagram, the director writes, “We were so close to the start of filming Season 6. Months of hard work by our very talented, dedicated and hardworking crew. Sets were built, costumes were made. Cameras and lenses tested. Locations were booked. All the prep was done. It’s a real shame not to be able to make it for you at this time.”
“But I personally want to thank the crew that I’ve spent months working with and I want to send my love and support to them and everyone else. We are in this together.”
He added, “These are extraordinary times and we must be extraordinary in them. Remember who we all are as a people and look out for those around you who will find these times challenging. Dig deep. It will pass.”
“Read that book that’s been staring at you for years. Write a poem, script, novel. Listen to music. Watch movies. Be creative. Make art. Share. Find the positive in all of this and use it. We will be better for it in the long run… Love & Respect to you all.”
Production on “Peaky Blinders” was suspended on Monday (March 16) over coronavirus fears.
“After much consideration, and in light of the developing situation concerning Covid-19, the start of production of ‘Peaky Blinders’ series 6 has been postponed,” a statement read. “Huge thanks to our incredible cast and crew, and to all our amazing fans for their continued support.”

Production on most major TV dramas and comedies and movies has shut down as a result of the global pandemic.
