The black comedy directed by Emerald Fennell and fronted by Carey Mulligan wins big at this year’s Hollywood Critics Association Awards by taking home multiple gongs.
Mar 7, 2021
AceShowbiz – “Promising Young Woman” was the big winner at the 2021 Hollywood Critics Association Awards.
Emerald Fennell’s black comedy starring Carey Mulligan as Cassie Thomas dominated the evening, scoring multiple accolades, including Best Picture and Best Actress for the 35-year-old star.
Accepting her awards via video call, Carey said, “This opportunity was really the chance of a lifetime and I’m so grateful to her.”
The director and screenwriter also won Best Original Screenplay, Best First Feature, and Filmmaker on the Rise.
Emerald, also 35, said of the former honour, “It just seems completely extraordinary that this script that was in my head for years and years listening to Paris Hilton and Britney Spears until everything was a pink, sparkly blur, for it to have come all of the way to Hollywood and to be awarded this unbelievable honour is truly extraordinary.”
The thriller follows a young woman, traumatised by a tragic event in her past, who seeks out vengeance against those who crossed her path.

The likes of “Nomadland”, “Sound of Metal”, “Da 5 Bloods”, “The Invisible Man”, “Birds of Prey”, and “Minari” were also honoured during the virtual ceremony on Friday night (05Mar21).
A number of special honours were also handed out, including the Trailblazer Award, which was handed to Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, who was recognised for speaking out on “important topics and advocating for change.” A clip was played showing the “Jumanji” star’s efforts to support the Black Lives Matter movement and highlighting his charity work.
Moved by the video, he said, “My friends, whom I have known and grown with, all of you over the years as we have gone down this road – and what a privilege it has been and what an honour it has been to receive this honour from you guys.”
Elsewhere, Zack Snynder took home the Valiant Award, and the Impact Award went to “Judas and the Black Messiah”.
The latter follows the story of Black Panther Party head Fred Hampton (Daniel Kaluuya) and FBI infiltrator William O’Neal (Lakeith Stanfield).
HCA Founder Scott Menzel said in a statement, “While 2020 was a year of much difficulty for many around the world, we are forever grateful to the filmmakers, storytellers, and studios who went above and beyond to find new ways to release their films to audiences. The films that the members of the Hollywood Critics Association nominated were amongst some of the most diverse and inclusive stories that we’ve seen on-screen in quite some time. Our mission has always been to highlight all voices and I believe it is reflective in our winners tonight. Congrats to all.”

When talking to Zendaya on Variety’s Actors on Actors, the actress playing Cassie Thomas in Emerald Fennell’s comedy thriller explains why she felt it was important for her to call out on the film review.
Jan 27, 2021
AceShowbiz – Carey Mulligan has accepted Variety’s apology for “Promising Young Woman” review. Having called out the publication for suggesting her not attractive enough to play the lead role in Emerald Fennell’s comedy thriller, the Cassie Thomas depicter admitted to having found the mea culpa “moving.”
The 35-year-old addressed the matter when speaking to Zendaya Coleman on Variety’s “Actors on Actors” series. “I was really, really surprised and thrilled, and happy to have received an apology. I kind of found it moving, in a way, to have drawn a line under that in a good way, and know that that had an impact in a way. So it was positive,” she said.
During the chat, Carey also explained why she slammed the outlet. “I feel it’s important that criticism is constructive. I think it’s important that we are looking at the right things when it comes to work, and we’re looking at the art, and we’re looking at the performance and the way that a film is made,” she elaborated.
“And I don’t think that goes to the appearance of an actor or your personal preference for what an actor does or doesn’t look like, which it felt that that article did,” she went on. “I think in criticizing or sort of bemoaning a lack of attractiveness on my part in a character, it wasn’t a personal slight, it wasn’t something that I felt.”
“It didn’t wound my ego, but it made me concerned that in such a big publication, an actress’ appearance could be criticized and it could be that, you know, that could be accepted as completely reasonable criticism,” she continued explaining. “I think it’s important to call out those things, because they seem small and they seem insignificant.”

In the review published by Variety, Carey was described as an “odd choice” to play the femme fatale character. It continued to read, “Margot Robbie is a producer here, and one can (perhaps too easily) imagine the role might once have been intended for her. Whereas with this star, Cassie wears her pickup-bait gear like bad drag; even her long blonde hair seems a put-on.”
Carey first weighed in on the sexist review in a profile for the New York Times in December 2020. “I read the Variety review, because I’m a weak person… And I took issue with it,” she claimed. “It felt like it was basically saying that I wasn’t hot enough to pull off this kind of ruse.”
“It wasn’t some sort of ego-wounding thing – like, I fully can see that Margot Robbie is a goddess,” she added. “It drove me so crazy. I was like, ‘Really? For this film, you’re going to write something that is so transparent? Now? In 2020?’ I just couldn’t believe it.”
Variety later issued an apology to Carey. Adding an editor’s note at the top of the review, the outlet penned, “Variety sincerely apologizes to Carey Mulligan and regrets the insensitive language and insinuation in our review of ‘Promising Young Woman’ that minimized her daring performance.”

The ‘Great Gatsby’ actress talks about the making of her new critically-acclaimed comedy thriller, admitting that she loves filming the violent scenes on the set.
Jan 20, 2021
AceShowbiz – Carey Mulligan enjoyed performing violent scenes in “Promising Young Woman”.
The actress stars as Cassie Thomas in Emerald Fennell’s black comedy and revealed she relished the experience of being violent on the big screen – which has been a rarity in her career.
“It was quite fun. It’s funny, I said to someone the other day – when we were shooting Drive, I always wanted to get out of the elevator and be in a scene,” she told The A.V. Club.
“And I think there was a scene originally at some point in Drive where there was a shootout – I think in the basement – and I was there. And then it got cut, and we didn’t shoot it. So yeah, it was nice to get to – well, it’s always fun to smash up a car with a tire iron if there’s no consequences.”

In fact, Carey enjoyed being destructive so much that she was left disappointed when a scene where she smashes a car only required three takes.
“I remember being disappointed because we only got to do it three times, because we had three sets of tail lights. I was like, ‘Come on, let’s do another one!’ And Emerald was like, ‘No, no, calm down, buddy,’ ” Carey laughed.
Carey Mulligan will be honoured with the International Star Award at the upcoming Palm Springs International Film Awards for her role in “Promising Young Woman”.
Previous recipients of the International Star Award include Nicole Kidman, Helen Mirren, Saoirse Ronan, and Charlize Theron.
Like last year’s honoree Theron, who went on to gain an Oscar nomination for her role in movie “Bombshell”, Mulligan is among Oscar favorites this year. She has already been named Best Actress at Los Angeles Film Critics Association, San Diego Film Critics Society, Houston Film Critics Society, St. Louis Film Critics Association, and Music City Film Critics Association.
