Ava DuVernay and Regina King React After HFPA Confirm They Have No Black Members

    WENN

The ‘Selma’ director and the ‘Watchmen’ actress suggest the fact that the Golden Globe organizers have no black members has been widely known for a long time.

    Feb 25, 2021
AceShowbiz – The Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA) has confirmed they don’t have any black members.
Following an investigation by the Los Angeles Times into the make-up of the group – who nominate and select the winners of the annual Golden Globe awards – the HFPA told the newspaper that the report is true, but it’s an issue they’re “committed to addressing.” They gave no indication as to how they would be addressing their lack of diversity.
The Los Angeles Times piece found that while some of the 87 members of the HFPA are people of colour, there are no black members.

Reflecting on the findings of the investigation on Twitter, director Ava DuVernay – who was nominated for a Golden Globe for her movie “Selma” back in 2015 – wrote alongside a link to a Hollywood Reporter article about the news, “Reveals? As in, people are acting like this isn’t already widely known? For YEARS?”
Meanwhile, Regina King – whose movie “One Night In Miami…” has seen her nominated for the Best Director gong at this year’s Globes – responded to DuVernay’s tweet with a picture of rapper Drake pointing into the camera with a smile on his face. DuVernay then replied using a GIF featuring the text “those are the facts.”
The upcoming Golden Globe Awards will be hosted by Tina Fey and Amy Poehler.
Herman J. Mankiewicz biopic “Mank”, directed by David Fincher and fronted by Gary Oldman, led the movie nominations with six nods. Netflix’s hit royal drama series “The Crown” dominated the TV categories with a total of six mentions as well.

While the late Chadwick Boseman receives a posthumous Best Actor in a Motion Picture – Drama nod for his role alongside Davis in the Netflix movie. Riz Ahmed for “Sound of Metal”, Anthony Hopkins in “The Father”, Gary Oldman for “Mank”, and Tahar Rahim in “The Mauritanian”, round out the category.
Netflix TV drama “The Crown” has a strong showing at the Globes with nominations for the drama, its leading ladies Gillian Anderson, Emma Corrin, Olivia Colman, and Helena Bonham Carter, and Prince Charles actor Josh O’Connor, who competes in the Best Performance by an Actor in a Television Series – Drama.
While Steve McQueen and John Boyega received nods for Black British period drama “Small Axe” as did Daisy Edgar-Jones for lockdown hit “Normal People”.
The nominations were announced virtually by actors Sarah Jessica Parker and Taraji P. Henson with the 78th Golden Globe Awards set to take place on 28 February.

  • Regina King to Premiere Directorial Debut at London Film Festival

    WENN

The ‘Watchmen’ actress is set to debut her first directorial movie ‘One Night in Miami’ at the upcoming London Film Festival during Britain’s Black History month.
    Sep 18, 2020
AceShowbiz – Regina King’s directorial debut “One Night in Miami” is to premiere at the London Film Festival during Britain’s Black History month (Oct20).
Based on Kemp Powers’ award-winning play of the same name, the movie is a fictionalised account of a night the then Cassius Clay, soon to be called Muhammad Ali, spent with Malcolm X, singer Sam Cooke, and American football star Jim Brown after upsetting Sonny Liston to win the World Heavyweight Championship in 1964.
The film will premiere on 11 October – in the middle of the U.K.’s celebration of Black History Month.
In a press release, Kingsley Ben-Adir, who plays Malcolm, says, “I’m thrilled that One Night in Miami will screen as part of this year’s London Film Festival. The conversation that takes place between these great men in this movie is as important now as it’s ever been.”
“It’s extra special being at home, in London, celebrating Regina King’s directorial debut and even more poignant that we premiere this film during Black History Month.”
London Film Festival Director, Tricia Tuttle, adds, “It’s an honour to be presenting the UK premiere of Regina King’s hugely accomplished directorial debut, One Night in Miami. It’s a tour de force combining razor sharp writing from Kemp Powers, four performances of gut-punching power from the male co-leads, including Londoner Kingsley Ben-Adir, and truly impressive direction from King.”
The hotly anticipated movie, which stars Eli Goree as the boxing legend, Leslie Odom Jr. as Cooke, and Aldis Hodge as basketball star Brown, has already led to King breaking down barriers – as she became the first Black female director to screen a feature at the Venice Film Festival.
