Shawn Mendes Almost Quit Music During Meltdown This Year

    WENN

The ‘Treat You Better’ hitmaker opens up about his struggle with mental health issues, revealing that he had a meltdown and came close to leaving music industry.

    Dec 11, 2020
AceShowbiz – Shawn Mendes came “extremely close” to quitting music this year.
The 22-year-old singer “burnt out” and suffered a “meltdown” but ultimately realised he was putting too much pressure on himself to always be successful.
“I burnt out and had a meltdown within, but not externally,” he told The Guardian newspaper.
Asked if he thought about quitting music, he replied, “Yes. I came extremely close. Extremely, extremely close… (What stopped me?) I realised it’s not the industry, it’s the way I do the industry. I let the industry control what I do, rather than me controlling my life.”
The “Stitches” hitmaker was so stressed about wanting his album “Wonder” to be as successful as his previous records that he lost the ability to sing.
“I had a moment at the end of January when my body would not allow me to sing,” he explained. “I physically couldn’t sing because of my anxiety to have a successful album. The fear strangled me and literally stopped me being able to sing.”

“It was a month before I felt like I was taking the first step. I really fell down.”
Shawn added that his success turned into a “big monster” that destroyed his confidence because he felt like he was “worth nothing” if even just one person didn’t like what he does.
“I started playing music in front of an audience of the world at 15 years old,” he said. “I was on the road for seven years straight and I had a lot of success, a lot of big songs, a lot of reasons for people to praise me and to think I was great, and a lot of reasons for me to think I was great.”
“That’s where it gets stressful. All of that praise and all that success was turning into a big monster that was eating my self-confidence because, if anybody said they didn’t like my music, all of a sudden I felt I was worth nothing.”
“And that’s what happens when you connect who you are with what you do. That’s the problem. That’s where you go into a complete meltdown, when you try to make something that’s impossible to make: something that the whole world likes.”
Fortunately, the “Senorita” hitmaker is now able to look at his situation differently, thanks to “three therapists and 55 self-help books.”

“This has been such a crazy year with so many challenges,” Cabello wrote on Instagram. “This holiday season, it is more important than ever to spread love and kindness to everyone! Adding that proceeds from downloads will “support those in need right now,” the “Havana” singer revealed that she and Mendes are donating $100,000 (£74,400) to Feeding America.

“We love you all so much and hope you get to enjoy this song over a very safe and merry holiday!” she added. “It would make our holidays if you went on their website and donated to one of their sectors and help out your community! They have sectors all over the nation. Let’s make our little corner of the world more beautiful today.”
“The Christmas Song” features on the holiday deluxe edition of Mendes’ new album, “Wonder”.
Mendes and Cabello first collaborated in 2015’s single “I Know What You Did Last Summer”, which was included on his “Handwritten Revisited” reissue. The duo reunited for “Senorita” in 2019 and the song became a hit. The pair have since become inseparable as they’ve been dating in public and quarantining together with Cabello’s family for several months earlier this year.

Shawn Mendes Calls New Album His 'Favorite Art'

    Instagram

The ‘Treat You Better’ hitmaker feels ‘very free’ during the making of his new music as he talks about his latest studio offering called ‘Wonder’, which comes out two years after his self-titled set.

    Dec 6, 2020
AceShowbiz – Shawn Mendes has described his new album “Wonder” as his “favourite art” to date.
The 22-year-old singer released his fourth record on Friday (04Dec20) – the follow-up to 2018’s self-titled LP – and he is delighted with how the collection turned out.
“(It is) my favourite art that I’ve ever made in my life,” he told Entertainment Tonight. “I know I really feel like I created an album that feels like freedom. I felt very free just making it. I felt like this is music that I love to listen to, this is music I want to hear, this is music I want to make and it’s gorgeous for that reason.”
The “Stitches” hitmaker collaborated with fellow Canadian pop star Justin Bieber on “Monster”, and revealed the song – which references the flip side to fame – was written three years ago.
“(It was written) when I was actually feeling a lot of (pressure about) who I was in a relationship with and (people) wanting to push me into this box…” he explained.

“Three years later, I actually listen back to it and it makes me think of every single person who has Instagram or Twitter and every single person who is checking their Instagram every five minutes to see if people approve of the last thing they posted.”
“It’s tough, because there is this (societal) pressure that everyone has and is putting on each other, and something that is so true and I don’t think is talked about enough is that the human condition is messy.”
Meanwhile, Shawn admitted he is “pretty mushy” when it comes to his romance with Camila Cabello and uses their love as inspiration for his music.
“I think we are both super sensitive, which creates a lot of sensitivity in our relationship, but we are songwriters, so we are constantly searching for the best topics in life,” he smiled.
“I don’t know, I am pretty mushy… I feel like she would probably say I am much more mushy.”

Shawn Mendes and Justin Bieber Unleash Emotion in 'Monster' Music Video

    [embedded content]

In their first ever collaboration, the ‘Senorita’ hitmaker and the ‘Lonely’ singer sing about their inner struggles with early fame as they find themselves being put on a pedestal.

    Nov 20, 2020
AceShowbiz – Shawn Mendes has finally made his dream collaboration with Justin Bieber a reality. The “Senorita” hitmaker released “Monster”, his brand duet single with the “Lonely” singer, off upcoming album “Wonder” at midnight on Friday, November 20, and along with it, was its dark and emotional music video.
Directed by Colin Tilley and produced by Jack Winter, the promo for Mendes’ first-ever collaboration with Bieber sees the popstar duo singing about their inner battles over their fame atop a white platform in the middle of the woods. Wearing casual clothes, they strip bare their emotions while lightning flashes around them.
“You put me on a pedestal and tell me I’m the best/ Raise me up to the sky until I’m out of breath,” Mendes kicks off the tune by singing his verse. “Fill me yup with confidence, I say what’s in my chest/ Spill my words and tear me down until there’s nothing left/ Rearrange the pieces just to fit me with the rest, yeah.”

One minute into the track, Bieber takes over by sharing his own experience. “I was fifteen when the world put me on a pedestal/ I had big dreams shows and making memories,” he croons. “Made some bad moves trying to act cool, upset by their jealously/ Lifting me up (Lifting me up), lifting me up (Yeah).”
About the single, Mendes previously told Apple Music’s Zane Lowe, “It’s about how society can put celebrities up on a pedestal and watch them fall and it seems to be this entertainment thing. And it’s hard.” He then explained on Bieber’s involvement, “And his heart fell deep into it. And him and I, even yesterday, were on the phone for an hour and had the deepest conversation, I think, about so much.”
“And it just felt really nice because it was a full circle moment for me, this guy who was the reason I started singing. I was nine when ‘One Time’ came out, and I completely was all in,” he recalled. “[Bieber] was Elvis to me. And to come back around and to have this very human to human conversation with him and his truth to come into that song and my truth to be there, it feels like one of the most special songs I’ve ever wrote. And the more I listened to it and the deeper I get into it, this is not just about celebrities. This is the human experience.”
