His former co-star Cheryl Fergison – Heather Trott in the soap – revealed the comic had the mishap just before he met her alongside Linda Carter, who played on-screen pal Shirley. She said: “His first day, that was a bit of a disaster. Linda and I were sitting outside on the little veranda where we’d often go for a cigarette and gossip between scenes.“We were told Bobby was due to arrive early so he could meet us before shooting and as neither of us had met him before, we were expecting a warm handshake and a bit of showbiz small talk. Next thing we know, an Aston Martin comes veering through the Elstree security gates, it was very flashy and stylish.Bobby Davro was very nervous(Image: Dave Benett/Getty Images)“‘That’ll be him,’ I said, standing up. We both stood halfway, ready to do the polite thing, when suddenly Bobby pulls up, leaps out of the car and without so much as a glance in our direction, bolts through a side door and slams it behind him.“‘Well, that was bloody rude,’ Linda said, genuinely taken aback. ‘This is the bloke who’s supposed to be playing my boyfriend. This is our first proper introduction and he’s legged it past us like we’re invisible.’“We sat back down in the sun, both of us slightly miffed, puffing away on our fags and going over scripts with one eye on the door.”He quite literally pooped himself(Image: Getty Images Europe)In her memoir Behind The Scenes Cheryl, 60, told how Bobby, 66, had a good excuse for rushing past them. She said: “About half an hour later, Bobby finally emerged from the building, bouncing with energy, beaming from ear to ear and heading straight for us.“‘Oh, hello girls!’ he said. ‘I’m Bobby Davro. You must be Linda? I’m playing your boyfriend Vinnie Monks! And I know that you are Cheryl Fergison who plays Heather, of course. It’s so lovely to meet you. I’m so, so sorry about earlier.’“Linda, arms folded, gave him a bit of a stare. ‘Yeah? You alright, mate?’The soap star was on Eastenders (Image: BBC)“Then Bobby, bless him, launched into one of the greatest icebreakers I’ve ever heard.“‘Honestly, girls,’ he said, ‘I wasn’t being rude. I’ve just had an absolute nightmare. On the way here, I was so nervous about filming, I… well… I shat myself. In the car.’“Linda and I both burst into laughter. ‘I’m not joking,’ he said, looking genuinely distressed.“‘The car is full of it. I’ve had to leave it parked round the back. I ran in to ask if anyone from EastEnders had spare trousers and pants I could borrow. I’m waiting for a bloke to come and clean the car out and valet it for me.’“By this point, Linda and I were howling – actual tears rolling down our faces.A very embarrassing mishap (Image: BBC)“It was one of those perfect ‘only in telly’ moments – one minute we’re sulking because Bobby Davro hasn’t said hello and the next we’re crying with laughter because he’s turned up with a full comedy routine and a ruined pair of trousers.“From that moment on, Bobby was a total diamond. Funny, kind, generous and a brilliant laugh to have around set.Article continues below“He is still a really good friend of mine to this day and we laugh about our first encounter a lot.“I don’t feel too bad about revealing it either, since he once said to a packed out arena: ‘I’m not saying Cheryl’s big but I got on top of her and burnt my arse on the light bulb.’ Nothing is off limits with Bobby, which is why I love him.”For the latest breaking news and stories from across the globe from the Daily Star, sign up for our newsletters.
