Jeremy Clarkson got Top Gear job because he’s an ‘egotistical show off’, says co-host

Jeremy Clarkson and Steve Berry were the first two presenters of Top Gear before the programme was rebooted in 2002 with Jeremy returning alongside James May and Richard Hammond14:27, 25 Jul 2025Jeremy Clarkson is a ‘show off’ says his ex co-host(Image: Formula 1 via Getty Images)Jeremy Clarkson’s former Top Gear co-presenter, Steve Berry, has claimed that he landed the role because he is a “massive show-off”. The duo hosted the now-defunct BBC Two car programme from 1993 until 1999, before Jeremy made a comeback to Top Gear with James May, 62, and Richard Hammond, 55, when the show was revived in 2002.Steve and Jeremy were chosen for their expertise and ability to perform on camera, as well as their shared egotism. Speaking on news channel Al Arabiya English, Steve explained: “I’m from the era of Top Gear when we were all journalists. It was believed at the BBC that if you presented a programme about a subject, you should be an expert.”So if the subject was say the Tudor Monarchs. They’d ring up Oxford University and Cambridge University and maybe Durham and they’d find an eccentric professor who wasn’t afraid of the camera and they’d get them to present the programme.Jeremy Clarkson and Steve Berry (second and third left) were among the original hosts of Top Hear(Image: BBC)”It was the same with cars. The belief was if people are going to be told about cars we need to find experts. So they would search the world of motoring journalism and try and find a unique voice. That’s how they found Jeremy Clarkson.”Jeremy Clarkson was a very entertaining and individualistic writer for Fast Lane magazine. Every year they used to drag a load of us in. Some of them, being journalists, would look at the camera like it was a machine gun that was being pointed at them and they couldn’t really translate what was written on the printed page to a TV news item.”But occasionally they’d come across massive show-offs and egotists like Jeremy Clarkson and me and they’d take us on.”Steve, 61, believes that Top Gear transitioned into more of an entertainment format when Jeremy, James and Richard took over from 2002 until 2015 – following the BBC’s decision not to renew Jeremy’s contract after he physically and verbally attacked one of the show’s producers.Jeremy Clarkson, James May and Richard Hammond became a trio(Image: Alan Chapman/Dave Benett/Getty I)However, the trio maintained their journalistic knowledge about cars, something that was lost when Chris Evans and Matt Le Blanc took over in 2016, leading to viewers switching off.Steve commented: “When it was Jeremy, James and Richard and they brought the programme back in the format that most people know, the ‘three amigos’ format, the format had changed into more of an entertainment show than a consumer show. But those three guys were all still journalists.”Despite admitting that he and Jeremy, 65, did not get along off screen, Steve respects him as a presenter and acknowledges his knowledge of motoring. He stated: “He and I never really got on, we butted heads me and Jezza, I’ve got to give the guy respect because when he opens his mouth to express one of his strongly held opinions he knows what he’s talking about. And people know that, even if they don’t like the guy. Like me. I don’t like him, but I respect him.”Top Gear was most recently hosted by Freddie Flintoff, Chris Harris and Paddy McGuinness(Image: BBC Studios/Vincent Dolman)Despite Steve and Jeremy – who hosted The Grand Tour with James and Richard for Amazon Prime from 2016 until 2024 – not being fond of each other, they share mutual respect and there are no genuine hard feelings.Steve shared: “The last time I met him in person, it was at a car show and there was an open bar. He said, ‘Berry, people know we don’t like each other, I’ll buy you a pint and we’ll stand over there pretending we like each other.'”I said go on then. So he bought me a pint and we were chatting away.”Steve notes that Jeremy’s on-screen persona is similar to his off-screen personality and he certainly enjoys being the main attraction, as can be seen from his role as “the leader of the gang” on Top Gear and The Grand Tour with James and Richard. He stated: “In real life, Jeremy is a less bombastic version of that person that you see on the screen. You couldn’t act that persona for all the years that he has, [but] he is kind of like that.”Anybody who watched the ‘three amigos’ Top Gear… would know there’s a hierarchy there, isn’t there.”They’re not equal, the three of them. There’s James and there’s Richard and then there’s Jezza, and Jezza is the leader of the gang, isn’t he?”Comedian Paddy McGuinness, 51, motoring journalist and professional racing driver Chris Harris, 50, and ex-England cricketer Andrew ‘Freddie’ Flintoff, 47, took over presenting duties on Top Gear in 2019.However, while filming an episode for the programme at Dunsfold Park Aerodrome in Surrey in December 2022, Freddie sustained serious facial injuries and fractured ribs when the open-topped three-wheeler he was driving tipped over.Article continues belowIn the wake of the incident, Top Gear was pulled from the schedule and “rested” for an indefinite period.Want all the biggest Showbiz and TV news straight to your inbox? Brooklyn Beckham shares rare message to family online as chaotic feud continues

Brooklyn Beckham has made a rare social media post about his family, as he shared a sweet tribute to his grandfather on his birthday amid his ongoing feud with his loved ones14:01, 25 Jul 2025Brooklyn Beckham has shared a family message online amid the continuing feud with his famous folks. He reached out online with a heartfelt birthday message for his grandad, Ted. The budding chef took to Instagram Stories, posting a dapper photo of himself and his dad David Beckham’s father at a posh do, complete with a loving arm around Ted’s shoulder. In the caption, Brooklyn expressed his affection, writing: “Happy birthday granddad. xx I love you,” accompanied by a pair of red heart emojis. Despite having overlooked the birthdays of several family members recently, Brooklyn made an exception for his youngest sibling, Harper Seven, celebrating her 14th birthday this month.Harper, the cherished youngest in the Beckham brood, is adored by her parents and her elder brothers – Brooklyn, 26, Romeo, 22, and Cruz, 20.Brooklyn Beckham and his granddad TedFor Harper’s special day, Brooklyn shared a snap of him, his wife Nicola, and Harper on his stories, captioning it: “Happy Birthday Harper. We love you x.” Yet, he was noticeably absent from the actual festivities, reports the Mirror.Earlier in the year, Brooklyn notably missed out on marking significant milestones for his parents – Victoria’s 51st and David’s 50th birthdays. He also didn’t publicly acknowledge his dad’s prestigious inclusion in the King’s Birthday Honours List, where David was knighted. Insiders suggest Brooklyn isn’t quite ready to bury the hatchet with his family, with a source telling The Sun: “There is too much water under the bridge.”Brooklyn Beckham and his family are feuding(Image: Instagram/brooklynpeltzbeckham)Detailing the motivation behind Brooklyn posting the photograph with Harper, they continued: “Brooklyn and Harper were always incredibly close. He adores her and so does his wife Nicola. They have an incredibly close bond and despite everything that has gone on, Brooklyn idolises her.”He wanted to put out a message on social media for her to show this bond still exists. He wanted this to be about Harper and he wanted to show people how much he and Nicola care about her. Just because they love Harper and want to show their affection, doesn’t mean they’re trying to make amends with the family.”Brooklyn’s tribute to his grandfather follows reports that his godfather, Elton John, has been working behind the scenes to calm family tensions. The music icon, 78, recently welcomed him and wife Nicola for lunch in Cannes alongside husband David Furnish.Sir Elton John has encouraged Brooklyn to make amends(Image: FILE)The meeting took place at the exclusive La Guerite beach club, where the group reportedly discussed the fractured family relationships.”Elton is the showbiz equivalent of Switzerland,” an insider revealed regarding the legendary performer’s mediation efforts. “He’s utterly neutral in this row.”The insider revealed to The Sun: “Elton of old may have relished in taking sides – in this case his young godson, Brooklyn, but two years off his 80th birthday, he’s a man who has seen and done it all. He just wants everyone to be happy. “There is no side-taking as such, he simply adores his godson, and really has a laugh with Nicola who he thinks has a great sense of humour”.”Sir Elton’s godfather duties are apparently taken very seriously by the music legend. “He wants to look after them in his role as ‘spiritual adviser’ as a godfather,” the source said. The music icon and his husband reportedly find the row “terribly sad” and have reminded everyone that “life is short” whilst encouraging them to patch things up.Article continues belowHave you joined Threads? Hulk Hogan’s contract shows staggering scale of ‘Hollywood’ net worth as he dies aged 71

Hulk Hogan amassed a huge fortune thanks in no small part to a mega money contract he negotiated while wrestling as tributes poured in after his death at the age of 71Liam Ryder Digital Production Editor13:33, 25 Jul 2025Hulk Hogan captivated audiences from the 1980s through to the late 2000s – banking some serious cash on the way(Image: WWE, WWE via Getty Images)Hulk Hogan’s incredible net worth has been revealed after his death at the age of 71 spurred thousands of heartfelt tributes to the wrestling legend.Born Terry Gene Bolloa in 1953, Hogan’s power barely waned over the decades since his heyday in the 1980s. Hogan was the face of the WWE, then known as World Wrestling Federation until 2002, before he pursued a career in Hollywood and made the controversial move to rival company World Championship Wrestling in 1994.He stayed at WCW until its collapse in 2001, after a boom in the industry in the late 1990s saw Hogan’s value rise once again. Such was his appeal, that WCW handed him a lucrative new contract in 1998 that was due to run until 2002.READ MORE: Hulk Hogan found dead at 71 after ‘suffering cardiac arrest at home’READ MORE: Hulk Hogan’s wildest controversies from sex tape to steroids lie and 10inch willy boastThat contract played a significant part in Hogan’s amassed wealth. His net worth was estimated to be around $25million (£18.5m) at the time of his death yesterday (Thursday, July 24).The details of that very contract have now been disclosed once again. The contract was filed as an exhibit in a racial discrimination lawsuit WCW was hit with back in October 2000.Hulk Hogan in 1995(Image: Ron Davis, Getty Images)The contract, which began on May 29, 1998 and was due to run until May 28, 2000, included a staggering bonus Hogan was entitled to before wrestling under it. WCW offered Hogan an eye-watering $2m (£1.5m) just for agreeing to stay with the company. As part of the contract, the late star was required to perform at six pay-per-view events a year for the first three years, in which he would be the “featured wrestler”. As a result, he was paid either a flat fee of $675,000 (£500,000) or 15 per cent of the PPV cable sales, whichever was greater, for each PPV.But it didn’t end there. The contract states that WCW “shall pay” Hogan $1.35m (£1m) three times a year for three years as an advance for the PPV payments, and he earned up to $1.75m (£1.30m) per event, depending on the buy rate for each event.Hulk Hogan during WCW’s heyday(Image: Steve Granitz, WireImage via Getty Images)Hogan was entitled to 25 per cent of the gross arena ticket revenues for each WCW Nitro and/or WCW Thunder show in which he appeared and wrestled at. There was also a clause guaranteeing Hogan be paid no less than $25,000 (£18,600) per show.A similar clause existed for non-televised shows, while he was also due a $100,000 (£74,300) “consultant fee” for the fourth year of the contract. If he wrestled, he was entitled to the same compensation per event as the first three years.Hogan received royalties of 50 per cent of the “net receipts” and “actual licence fees” on all Hulk Hogan merchandise. He was also handed a promotional fee of $20,000 (£14,900) a month for every time he promoted his groundbreaking, controversial faction, the New World oder.Article continues belowHulk Hogan makes his final WWE appearance during the company’s Netflix debut on RAW on January 6, 2025 at Intuit Dome in Inglewood, California(Image: WWE, WWE via Getty Images)Finally, when he travelled for WCW, he received first class air travel, first class hotel accommodation, limousine service and $175 (£130) a day. The contract also included a controversial ‘creative control’ clause, which confirms that Hogan was able to approve the outcome of all of his matches. In total, the contract meant that Hogan was guaranteed to be paid an estimated $14.9m (£11m) between 1998 and mid-2000, when he left the company. However, it’s plausible that he could have taken more than $20m (£14.9) when bonuses and extras were considered. More

Riverdance star Michael Flatley to make bid for Irish presidency, court told

The Riverdance star has undergone a ‘material change in circumstances’ and is set to return to Ireland within 14 days in order to run in this autumn’s presidential elections13:04, 25 Jul 2025Could Michael Flatley be the next Irish president?(Image: PA)Michael Flatley – yes, Riverdance dancer Michael Flatley – is going to seek a nomination to become Ireland’s next president, a court has heard. The choreographer’s barrister Ronnie Hudson announced during a High Court case he’s taken in relation to works done at his County Cork mansion named the Castlehyde.Hudson made the court aware of a “material change in circumstances” for Flatley, and said the star was set to return to Ireland within the next fortnight to look to run in this autumn’s presidential election. An affidavit, signed by Flatley’s solicitor Maxwell Mooney, was submitted to the court stating the Lord Of The Dance star is “to seek nominations to run for president of Ireland”.Flatley is an American-Irish citizen(Image: PA)The American-Irish Flatley, who is eligible to run as an Irish citizen, had strongly hinted at a presidential bid last week, but said he had not made a final decision. He said during a radio interview that he did not believe the Irish people “have a voice – not a true proper deep voice that speaks their language”.Flatley said he hears concerns from the “average person on the street” and they are not “happy right now Somebody has to speak for the Irish people”.The star was in the country earlier this month where he performed on a flute at a July 4 celebration hosted at the residence of the US Ambassador to Ireland, Edward Walsh, who was recently appointed to the role by Donald Trump.Flatley is set to return to Ireland soon (Image: PA)An election for the largely ceremonial role is expected towards the end of October, as it must take place in the 60 days before president Michael D Higgins’s term ends on November 11.A candidate must be an Irish citizen who is 35 or older in order to run, and they must be nominated either by at least 20 members of the Irish parliament or at least four local authorities. Two candidates so far have secured sufficient backing to enter the race: former farming journalist and EU commissioner Mairead McGuinness, who is the Fine Gael nominee, and Catherine Connolly, a left-wing independent and former Galway mayor who has received the backing of opposition parties and independents.Andrew Fitzpatrick SC said Flatley had said before in 2024 that he intended to move to Paris and then Valencia.Article continues below“That didn’t happen,” he told the court. He also said that if the court was prepared to admit the affidavit, it would undermine previous assertions made by Flatley’s side that the reason he is living in Monaco and cannot return to the state is because of the condition of the Castlehyde.
