Spike Lee's Daughter and Son Make History as 2021 Golden Globe Ambassadors

    Instagram

The filmmaker’s children Satchel and Jackson have become the first siblings of color to serve as the ambassadors of the upcoming 78th annual Golden Globe Awards.

    Jan 13, 2021
AceShowbiz – Filmmaker Spike Lee’s kids, Satchel and Jackson, have been named as the 2021 Golden Globe Ambassadors by members of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association.
The pick marks the first time two siblings of colour have been handed the title while Jackson is the first black male ambassador.
Golden Globe Ambassadors, who are always the kids of Hollywood stars, assist during the awards show and raise awareness about a charity of their choice.
Satchel has chosen Callen-Lorde, which provides health care to LGBTQ communities, while Jackson picked Big Brothers Big Sisters of America, which works to empower young people.
The HFPA will be donating $25,000 (£18,300) to each cause.
Congratulating their kids, Spike, a three-time Golden Globe nominee, and his producer wife, Tonya Lewis Lee, urged the pair to “have fun” as Golden Globes Ambassadors.

The siblings succeed Pierce Brosnan’s kids Dylan and Paris, who served in the position last year (20).
The 78th annual Golden Globe Awards are expected to take place on 28 February (21) and the nominations are expected to be announced on February 3.
The date was originally occupied by the Oscars, but The Academy moved the event to the end of April 2021 as a result of the coronavirus pandemic, which has frozen the globe’s film industry for months.
As a result of the changes, the eligibility requirements for movies have been extended by two months, with films released in January and February now able to compete.
Preliminary voting will begin on February 1, 2021 and end on February 5, with nominations voting ending a month later, when the Oscar nominations will be announced.
The 93rd Oscars will be held on April 25 at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood.

Spike Lee Urges HBO to Bring Back 'Racist' Movie 'Gone with the Wind'

    WENN

The ‘Da 5 Blood’ filmmaker calls the 1939 movie ‘one of the most racist films ever’ and wants HBO to bring it back following removal to let reviews decide for themselves.
    Jun 13, 2020
AceShowbiz – Spike Lee has called on HBO Max bosses to reinstate “Gone with the Wind” on the streaming service because he feels “one of the most racist films ever” should be seen.
The 1939 movie adaptation of Margaret Mitchell’s novel about the American Civil War and Reconstruction Era South has been temporarily removed from the new platform due to the “racial prejudices” on display in the movie in the wake of Black Lives Matter protests against racial injustice following the death of George Floyd last month, May 2020.
But filmmaker Spike, who included footage from the film in his hit 2018 movie “BlacKkKlansman”, is urging the powers that be to reverse the decision and let viewers decide for themselves.
“I think that that should be seen,” Lee told “The View”. “I think that one of the most racist films ever, D.W. Griffiths’ Birth of a Nation, should be seen. I show that film in my class. I’m a tenured professor at New York University… I show Birth of a Nation.”

Spike Lee Keen to Make American Indian War Movie From Native Americans' Perspective

    WENN

The ‘Da 5 Blood’ filmmaker bans the remake of his classic movie ‘Do the Right Thing’ and reveals his desire to make a movie about the Battle of Little Bighorn.
    Jun 13, 2020
AceShowbiz – Spike Lee will never allow anyone to remake his classic 1989 film “Do the Right Thing” – even after he’s dead.
The “Da 5 Bloods” filmmaker’s movie about life in his beloved Brooklyn confirmed his status as one of Hollywood’s top auteurs and is often listed among the greatest films of all time.
When answering questions from stars and readers of U.K. newspaper The Guardian, Spike was asked if he would make a new version, given the timeliness of its themes of racism and police brutality following the death of George Floyd at the hands of police in Minneapolis, Minnesota.
In response, the star gave an unequivocal no, saying, “No. As long as I’m alive, there will be no remake and, if they try, I’m coming back from the dead to stop it.”
The 63-year-old even went on to joke that he, its stars who have passed away, and even Frank Sinatra would return from beyond the grave to stop anyone remaking it.
“I promise you, I will come back from the pearly gates, from the upper room, to stop a remake,” he added. “So help me God. I will bring him with me, and Ossie Davis, Ruby Dee, Bill Nunn, Frank Sinatra. Anybody that’s passed; we’ll all come back to stop a remake.”
Spike does, however, have one project in mind for the future, making a film about controversial United States Army cavalry commander George Custer – who was killed after his troops were overwhelmed by Native American warriors at the Battle of Little Bighorn – from a new perspective.
“I would do that film, but Custer would not be the hero,” he explains. “He would be the villain and I would tell it from the viewpoint of the Native Americans. One day!”

Spike Lee Uses '3 Brothers' as Powerful Statement About George Floyd's Death

    WENN

When debuting the short film on Don Lemon’s CNN special news report, the ‘BlacKkKlansman’ director points out that the country was founded on the deaths of black people.
    Jun 2, 2020
AceShowbiz – Spike Lee has made his own powerful statement about the death of George Floyd at the hands of police by releasing a short film comparing his treatment to a scene from his film “Do the Right Thing”.
Floyd passed away last Monday (May 25) after being apprehended by police in Minneapolis, Minnesota, with Derek Chauvin, an officer who was filmed kneeling on his neck facing a third degree murder charge and three other officers dismissed over the incident.
His death, and U.S. authorities’ subsequent response has prompted protests and unrest across America, with Lee adding his own voice on Sunday (May 31) by debuting a short film, “3 Brothers”, on a CNN special news report, hosted by Don Lemon.
The short opens with the words “Will History Stop Repeating Itself”, before cutting together footage of the arrests of Floyd and Eric Garner, whose death after being placed in a chokehold by a New York City Police Department (NYPD) officer in 2014 also sparked protests. It also includes scenes from Spike’s 1989 movie “Do the Right Thing”, in which Radio Raheem, the character played by Bill Nunn, dies during a brawl after being choked by police officers.

Speaking to Don, the “BlacKkKlansman” director, who was wearing a T-shirt carrying the date 1619, generally thought to be the year the first indentured labourers arrived in the state of Virginia, said the U.S. was founded on the deaths of black people – and protesters, even those who have turned to rioting, are merely demanding justice.
“How can people not understand why people are acting the way they are?” he warned. “This is not new, we saw with the riots in the 60s, the assassination of Dr (Martin Luther) King, every time something jumps off and we don’t get our justice, people are reacting they way they do to be heard … We are seeing this again and again and again…This is the thing: the killing of black bodies, that is what this country is built upon.”
Spike has also posted the short film on Twitter.

Spike Lee Debuts Movie About New York City Struggles Amid Coronavirus Crisis

    WENN

The famed filmmaker has made a mini movie that documents the New Yorkers’ struggles in the epicentre of the killer coronavirus pandemic in the United States.
    May 9, 2020
AceShowbiz – Director Spike Lee has captured the painful experience of living in New York City amid the devastating coronavirus pandemic in a new short film.
The Brooklyn native and Oscar winner made the three-minute movie, “New York, New York”, as a “valentine” to the city, which has been ravaged by COVID-19 as the epicentre of the disease in the U.S.
“It’s painful when you see there is nobody there,” Spike told CNN anchor Anderson Cooper and Dr. Sanjay Gupta of the empty streets in the footage. “But at the end of the film, that is when we see New Yorkers.”
“New York, New York”, which is set to the eponymous song by Frank Sinatra, features deserted subways and landmarks, like Broadway theatres, Yankee Stadium and Wall Street, as well as scenes involving healthcare workers.

Despite the dismal scenes in the Big Apple, Spike feels proud to be living there at one of the city’s roughest periods in history.
“You know what? I wouldn’t want to be any other place than here, the epicentre,” he added.

Spike Lee Publicizes Script to Unproduced Jackie Robinson Biopic

    Instagram

To keep fans entertained during the ongoing coronavirus lockdown, the ‘BlacKkKlansman’ filmmaker reveals that it came from a ‘dream project’ he had planned to make with Denzel Washington.
    Mar 31, 2020
AceShowbiz – Spike Lee thrilled film and baseball fans alike on Sunday, March 30, by making the script to his unmade Jackie Robinson movie available online.
The director uploaded all 159 pages of his screenplay on social media to keep fans entertained during the ongoing coronavirus lockdown.
“Hello everyone, hope you are safe at home,” Spike began a video message, explaining his “Jackie Robinson Biopic” was a “dream project” that he had planned to make with Denzel Washington in the mid-1990s, but “Denzel said he was too old” and the project fell flat.
“I pulled this script out of the vault and so I’d like to share the script with you…,” Lee told fans in the video he shot at his Brooklyn, New York home. “This is a great American story. Hope you enjoy it. If you don’t, that’s alright too. It’s never getting made, but I wanted to share this script with you. Be safe! Be safe! Social distancing! Peace.”

The timing was perfect for baseball fans missing their favourite sport – the American season was scheduled to start on 26 March, but the coronavirus pandemic forced league bosses to postpone all the games. It is not clear when the baseball season will now begin.

Spike Lee Likens Coronavirus Situation to War in Support of Cannes Cancellation

    WENN/Apega

Agreeing with the move taken by festival director Thierry Fremaux, the ‘BlacKkKlansman’ filmaker stresses that this pandemic is ‘no joke’ and the crisis is ‘not some movie.’
    Mar 21, 2020
AceShowbiz – Cannes Film Festival jury president Spike Lee has strongly backed the cancellation of the French movie event due to the coronavirus crisis.
Cannes’ festival director Thierry Fremaux announced on Thursday, March 19 that the iconic film event would not go ahead as planned in May, with much of Europe and the U.S. facing lockdown and travel restrictions aimed at slowing the spread of the virus.
Spike, who was to have served as the movie showcase’s jury president, backed the move wholeheartedly, despite his disappointment, as he compared the situation to a, “war,” echoing the words of French President Emmanuel Macron.
“I agree 100 percent with Thierry and the Cannes Film Festival,” the “BlacKkKlansman” filmaker tells Variety. “The world has changed and it’s changing every day. People are dying and France’s president has said, several times – I’m paraphrasing – ‘We are at war.’ We are in a war-like time.”
“The stuff that we love has to take a back seat: movies, TV, sports, the NBA is a global sport, baseball. So many things have been postponed, and I agree with this move.”
Organizers have, however, announced their intention to reschedule if possible, and Spike says he will make time to head up the jury if new dates are found.
“Let’s not forget this is the world’s biggest film festival, the world’s biggest stage for cinema and I’ll be the first black president of the jury,” he adds. “So look, I can’t pretend (to know) what’s going to happen tomorrow. Everybody has to pray, get on bended knee, pray, we get out of this, find a vaccine, get back on our feet – physically, emotionally and financially worldwide. This is no joke. It’s not some movie. People are dying.”

    Feb 4, 2020
AceShowbiz – Spike Lee is heading to Broadway to direct a film version of David Byrne’s “American Utopia” stage show.
The musical production features the rocker performing songs from his 2018 album of the same name alongside a number of fellow artists, while it also includes tracks from his Talking Heads days and his solo career.
“American Utopia” has become a hit on Broadway since its launch in October (2019), and now “BlacKkKlansman” filmmaker Lee will capture the show on camera for a special release by officials at film company Participant later this year (2020), reports Deadline.
In a statement, Byrne writes, “Pinch me. This couldn’t have worked out better for this project. Spike Lee directing and Participant producing – two socially engaged teams, well, three if you count us in the band, coming together in what I feel will be something moving, important, and unlike anything anyone has seen before.”

The news comes as Byrne enters the final two weeks of American Utopia’s run at the Hudson Theatre, where the production, which has central themes including civic engagement and democracy, will be housed until 16 February.
